Opis:
This research aimed to develop and characterize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/bacterial cellulose (BC) composite for environmentally friendly films. BC was produced from a high-performance strain of Komagataeibacter intermedius BE073 isolated from a bio-extract sample. The film was prepared by varying the ratio between PVA and BC content, and treatments consisted of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40. The characterization of PVA/BC film in terms of mechanical properties, film structure, water and oxygen resistances, thermal stability, and biodegradation were investigated. Results revealed that PVA/BC film had properties superior to that of pure PVA film, and it has a high biodegradation rate. The mechanical properties changed little with the addition of BC, but the tensile strength and Young’s modulus increased with the addition of BC. Water absorption and moisture content were also reduced. However, adding BC improved oxygen transmission rates and thermal stability properties. Most importantly, the addition of BC helped the film to degrade. The higher the amount added, the higher the natural decomposition rate.

Opis:
Dietary fibers and phenolic acids are recognized for their various health benefits; thus, cellulose was selected as a carrier polymer of phenolic acids, including gallic acid and caffeic acid. Dried cellulose particles were prepared through the complexation of different amounts of cellulose (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10%, w/v) with a constant amount of phenolic acids. Additionally, the complexation time was 15 or 60 min with the goal to determine an impact of the duration of complexation on the adsorption of phenolic acids onto cellulose. The prepared particles were stored at ambient temperature for 12 months to assess their storage stability. Cellulose particles were assessed for the amount of adsorbed phenolic acids and antioxidant activities. For both phenolic acids, the same correlation was established, i.e., reduction of adsorption of phenolic acids occurred with the increase of cellulose amount during complexation. The duration of complexation was not a significant factor in the adsorption of phenolic acids. Antioxidant activity generally followed the trend that was obtained for the amount of adsorbed phenolic acids. Comparing both phenolic acids, cellulose had a higher affinity for caffeic acid (4.665 g/kg) than for gallic acid (3.399 g/kg). However, greater stability of gallic acid/cellulose particles was observed throughout the storage. After storage, the content of gallic acid in cellulose particles slightly decreased (up to 3%), while that of caffeic acid decreased from 10 to 20%. The complexation of phenolic acids with cellulose was proven by recording infrared spectra. Formulated cellulose particles can be a valuable tool for the preparation of plant-based functional additives which can be used for the enrichment of products with phenolic acids in order to improve their antioxidant potential and stability.

The problems that are often encountered in the results of the development of material modification of super absorbent polymers include water absorption ability and ability swelling which is low, limited solubility in water and organic compounds, in addition to the condition of the material that is hard and brittle and not environmentally friendly, also being difficult to decompose. These conditions can be minimized and improved through modification of monomer compounds, crosslinker, and initiator in the polymerization process. The polymerization process is carried out by the method of chemical crosslinker with crosslink agent i.e. formaldehyde in the main chain (backbone), namely polyvinyl alcohol, and daughter chains, i.e. bagasse cellulose, with the help of an initiator in the form of potassium persulfate. The results of the study showed that formation of a new functional group (C-OH stretch) at 1143.30 cm-1; (-OH) at 3461.03 cm-1; (C-O-C) at 1200.55 cm-1; (C=O) at 1529.86 cm-1. The highest absorption capacity reached 746.49% in the sample with 0.8 gram of initiator and crosslink 0.8 mL. Mark Swelling the highest was obtained under acidic conditions, namely pH 6 with a value of 358.30. The surface morphology of the superabsorbent, which is a dense, strong and elastic surface, is formed with pores ±11.75 nm. The surface change proves that the grafting process and interfacial interactions of two materials are going well.

Currently the research on silver nanoparticles is of great demand owing to their antibacterial properties. One of the possibilities is the study of the silver deposition on the cellulose fibers, and more specifically of the silver nanoparticles and cellulose particles. The research was aimed at obtaining silver nanostructures by reducing ions with formaldehyde and then stabilizing them with the Pluronic solution. A suspension system containing cellulose fibers and silver nanoparticles was prepared in the basic electrolyte NaNO3. There were analyzed the following makes: pH of solutions, grain distribution and zeta potential ζ. Ag nanoparticles are largely applied in medicine, pharmacy, cosmetology and textile industry. Great interest in the nanostructures allows for developing knowledge about them, and thus creating the possibility of further improvement of their properties for subsequent applications.

Forestry waste (FW) extracted parts ofmedicinal-aromatic plant waste (EPW) and unused parts (UPW) are considered potential resources for energy recovery (their heating value of approximately 19 MJ/kg).In order to valorize lignocellulosic biomass, a pretreatment process is required to hydrolyze the recalcitrant lignocellulosic complex into fermentable simple sugars. The aim of this study is to determine the best method of pretreatment that takes into account treatment time, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. The mixture of FW, EPW, and UPW was treated by simple and combined treatment using different methods like acid sulfuric (Ac), steam explosion (SE), and enzymatic (E) (cellulase and hemicellulase). The results showed that the combined and simple Ac treatments are the mostefficient compared with SE and E treatments in the hydrolysis of polysaccharide of cellulose with a rate respectively of 90.5% and 77.6% and hemicellulose with a rate respectively of 80.63% and 87.14%. In addition, both of the preceding methods release an important rate of total phenolic compounds. Combined treatment demands high time but is friendly (approximately 1 day), and Ac treatment is less time-consuming (about 25 min) but harmful to the environment and causes the corrosion of equipment. In conclusion, combined treatment can be the best method and the high time required can be reduced with the progress of the research.

Opis:
All over the world, highway traffic is increasing rapidly, as is the population and the road network. The country’s maximum and minimum temperatures also vary greatly. Moreover, the pavements are subjected to various types of damage. Pavement binders and mixtures are a constant area of research and development for scientists and engineers. Adding fibers to bituminous mixes may improve the properties of fatigue and strength of the material. Natural fibers may be used to improve asphalt mixtures performance due to their inherent compatibility with asphalt cement and excellent mechanical properties. Also, the high stone content and relatively high asphalt content in SMA mixture led to the occurrence of drain-down of the asphalt mastic from the mixture, and this problem requires the use of stabilizing additives such as cellulose fibers, mineral fibers, or polymers to mitigate this problem and ensure long-term performance. The most public sort of stabilizing additives is cellulose fiber. Overall, natural fibers in stone mastic asphalt mixes are discussed in this paper. An additional focus is on how asphalt concrete will be affected by natural fibers, mixing techniques, and managerial decisions. According to the review, the stabilizing and strengthening impact of natural fibers on the performance of asphalt mixes have been extensively researched. Natural fibers can significantly increase the rut and flow resistance of asphalt mixtures. Adding natural fibers to pavement can increase structural resistance to pavement distress.

Opis:
The effective flotation separation of sulfides and sliming silicate minerals is always a difficult problem. In this paper, the selective flotation of arsenopyrite from muscovite was studied by using sodium phytate (SP) as dispersant, and the mechanism was investigated through SEM/EDS, zeta potential, FTIR and XPS measurements. Single mineral flotation results showed that with the increasing isoamyl xanthate (IAX) dosage the recovery of arsenopyrite increased, until 8×10−5 mol/L IAX (79.40% recovery, pH=7), after that it decreased slightly. While muscovite floated poorly at any IAX concentration. For the mixed minerals, arsenopyrite recovery was only 54.63% while that of muscovite was 42.70%, which was attributed to the coverage of muscovite on arsenopyrite surface. When 6×10−5 mol/L SP was added into the mixed minerals system, the recovery of arsenopyrite recovered to 68.26% while that of muscovite was 8.48% (approximate the value of the single mineral). SEM/EDS results showed that SP could disperse muscovite and prevented its coverage on arsenopyrite surface. Zeta potential results showed that the electrokinetic potential of muscovite and arsenopyrite decrease from -26.60mV to -39.01 mV and from -26.90 mV to -27.84 mV at pH=7, respectively. It was obvious that the negatively charged phytate ions selectively adsorbed on the surface of muscovite. FTIR and XPS resulted co-proved the chemisorption of SP with active sites on muscovite while arsenopyrite spectrum did not change significantly, which was consistent with flotation and zeta potential results. The selective adsorption of SP on muscovite compared to arsenopyrite was responsible for the effective separation of them.

The content of structural carbohydrates and lignin are important assessment criteria of the feed value of meadow plants. It is affected by many independent factors, including among others its development stage during the harvest as well as climatic conditions, especially the amount of rainfall. During the years 2014-2016, plant samples were harvested at weekly intervals, respectively five times from late April to late May. The effect of harvest date on cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin contents was evaluated. The chemical composition of plants was varied, depending not only on harvest date but also on the year of study. Regardless of the course of meteorological conditions in subsequent growing seasons, the increase of cellulose (from 236.5 to 297.9 g∙kg-1 DM), hemicelluloses (from 159.3 to 210.8 g∙kg-1 DM), and lignin (from 31.5 to 43.1 g∙kg-1 DM) in the following dates of harvest were observed. These parameters were also positively correlated with the total rainfall from the begging of vegetation season to the date of plants sampling (R2 = 0.65, 0.12 and 0.44 for cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin, respectively), and with the average daily air temperature in the moment of harvest (R2 = 0.66, 0.32 and 0.52 for cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin, respectively). The cellulose and lignin content, regardless of the harvest date, were significantly higher in the first year of the study (2014), when moisture conditions for plant development were optimal.

The nature and mechanism of interaction between carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with cassiterite (and chlorite surfaces) and their effects on the flotation separation process of cassiterite (from chlorite) were investigated by micro-flotation tests, surface adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, solution chemical calculation, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS). The results from single mineral tests revealed that CMC exhibited good selective inhibition effects with cassiterites and chlorites. When the dosage was 12.5 mg/L at pH 8, cassiterite and chlorite recovery was 92.2% and 6.3%, respectively. The artificial mixed ore test revealed that the flotation separation effect was the best when the dosage of CMC was 6.5 mg/L. Cassiterite used during the studies was 75.1% pure. The recovery was 82.8%. The interaction between CMC and the cassiterite surface led to a shift in the zeta potential toward the negative direction. CMC was weakly adsorbed on the cassiterite surface. There was no significant impact on the subsequent collection of sodium oleate. The concentration of C atom increased post interaction, and the potential shifted toward the negative direction. Characteristic CMC peaks were observed at this point. Hydrogen bonds and weak chemisorption interactions between CMC and chlorite affected the interaction between sodium oleate and the chlorite surface. It also affected the flotation results. The cassiterite and chlorite were separated effectively.

Cellulose obtained from rice straw was grafted with polyvinylpyrrolidone (Cell-g-PVP). The process was induced by gamma simultaneous irradiation (Co-60). The presence of the grafted PVP chains was confirmed by FT-IR, XRD and EDS methods. The influence of the irradiation dose (20 and 30 kGy) on the reaction efficiency and thermal stability of Cell-g-PVP was investigated. The grafting yield at the dose of 30 kGy was about 56%. The higher dose of radiation resulted in better thermal stability. The AAS results showed that Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cr(II) ions can be adsorbed by Cell-g-PVP. The order of ion metals adsorption capacity of Cell-g-PVP was Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Cr(II). The adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) metal ion using the Cell-g-PVP followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm whereas the chemical adsorption and the adsorption energy were constant on all sides of the copolymer.

To differentiate the hydrophilic properties of the membrane surfaces, different amounts of cellulose acetate (14 and 18 wt. %) and polyvinylpyrrolidone as a pore-generating agent (PVP, 1, 2, 3 or 4 wt. %) were used. The membranes were characterised by determination of their porosity, equilibrium water content, wetting angle and content of surface oxygen functional groups. After the application of membranes to phenol removal, the following parameters characterising the process were determined: permeability, membrane resistance, coke resistances, pore resistances, total filtration resistance and flux recovery ratio. The membranes were found to show higher effectiveness in phenol removal from a solution of the initial concentration 15 mg/L, and more effective were the membranes with higher contents of cellulose acetate. On the surface of the membranes the oxygen functional groups of acidic nature are dominant, both before and after filtration. The membranes of higher contents of cellulose acetate show higher resistances.

Opis:
This paper presents a structural analysis of various methods to produce bacterial cellulose (BC) from Nata de Coco (Acetobacter xylinum). BC sheet, BC chem and BC mech powders were successfully prepared using oven drying, chemical and mechanical treatment. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to analyze the structure of prepared BC. The structure of bacterial cellulose was compared with the structure of commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cotton fabric. The XRD results showed that the BC sheet sample had the highest degree of crystallinity (81.76%) compared to cotton cellulose (75.73%). The crystallite size of cotton was larger than the BC sheet, with the value of 6.83 ηm and 4.55 ηm, respectively. The peaks in the FTIR spectra of all BC were comparable to the commercial MCC and cotton fabrics. FESEM images showed that the prepared BC sheet, BC mech, and BC chem had an almost similar structure like commercial MCC and cotton fabric. It was concluded that simple preparation of BC could be implemented and used for further BC preparation as reinforcement in polymer composites, especially in food packaging.

Do oceny struktury celulozy bakteryjnej stosowano dyfrakcję rentgenowską (XRD), spektroskopię Fouriera w podczerwieni (FTIR) i skaningową mikroskopię elektronową z emisją polową (FESEM). Strukturę celulozy bakteryjnej porównano ze strukturą handlowej celulozy mikrokrystalicznej (MCC) i tkaniny bawełnianej. Wyniki XRD wykazały, że najwyższy stopień krystaliczności miała próbka arkusza BC (81,76%) w porównaniu z celulozą bawełnianą (75,73%). Wielkość krystalitów bawełny była większa niż folii BC i wynosiła, odpowiednio, 6,83 ηm oraz 4,55 ηm. Piki widm FTIR wszystkich otrzymanych form celulozy bakteryjnej były porównywalne z komercyjnymi tkaninami bawełnianymi i z celulozy mikrokrystalicznej.

Opis:
Selected aspects of production and characterization of layered biopolymer composite bonded with a cellulose-based binder. This project aimed to study the possibility of using regenerated cellulose for gluing a layered composite. In the scope of research have been produced different variants of layered composite differ in wood species and pressing time. The produced composite has been characterized according to selected mechanical and physical properties. The prepared samples have been referred to as those bonded with industrial MUF resin. Obtained results proved that regenerated cellulose can be used as a bonding agent. Furthermore, the tests confirmed an improvement in mechanical and physical properties after the bonding of the regenerated cellulose.
Wybrane aspekty wytwarzania i charakterystyka warstwowego kompozytu biopolimerowego wiązanego spoiwem na bazie celulozy. Celem badań było określenie możliwości wykorzystania regenerowanej celulozy do klejenia kompozytu warstwowego. W ramach badań wykonano różne warianty kompozytu warstwowego różniące się gatunkiem drewna i czasem prasowania. Wytworzony kompozyt scharakteryzowano zgodnie z wybranymi właściwościami mechanicznymi i fizycznymi.
