Electromagnetic field
Opis:
The paper presents the results of viability of breast cancer cells under the influence of electromagnetic field. MCF-7 cell line was subjected to an electromagnetic field with a frequency of 5 Hz, 60 Hz and 120 Hz and an MTT assay was performed immediately after the influence of the field and after 24 hours. No statistical difference was demonstrated in cell viability immediately after exposure to EMF, and there are demonstrated differences in the case of field frequencies of 5 Hz and 120 Hz within 24 hours after exposure.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research conducted on cells isolated from the epidermal layer of the skin taken from the ear of domestic swine (Sus scrofa). It was checked whether the increase in the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) in cell culture, cause changes in their viability, and will affect the changes in the production of nitric oxide. For evaluation of the viability of cells, the MTT assay was used. The concentration of a nitric oxide metabolites (NO3/NO2), in the cell supernatants was measured using test-Measure iT High-Sensitivity Nitrite Assay Kit.

Opis:
The work deals with the mechanical properties and biological behaviour of composite materials made of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) polymer and carbon fibers (CF) designed for laryngeal biomaterials. Two types of PEEK–based matrix composites containing carbon fibers in the form of cloth (2D) and short fibers (MD) were made. The composite samples were obtained via hot mol-ding of PEEK/CF prepregs. Mechanical durability of the composite samples aging in Ringer’s solution at 37oC was analyzed. The samples were dynami-cally loaded under bending force up to 106 cycles. The ultrasonic wave propagation method was applied to study changes in the composites. The mechanical changes were analyzed, taking into consideration the anisotropic structure of the composite samples. The layered composite samples were modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The changes in mechanical stability of the composite samples were not significant after fatigue testing up to 1·106cycles. The biological tests were carried out in the presence of hFOB-1.19-line human osteoblasts and HS-5-line human fibroblasts. The level of type I collagen produced from both types of cells was determined by ELISA test. The tests showed differen-ces between the samples with regard to the viability of the cells.

Opis:
Flavonoids, polyphenolic compounds present in many food products, affect growth of different bacterial species when tested as purified or synthetic substances. They can also influence gene expression in human cells, like fibroblasts. Here, we asked if soy isoflavone extracts, commonly used in many products sold as anti-menopausal dietary supplements, influence bacterial growth similarly to a synthetic isoflavone, genistein. Four commercially available products were tested in amounts corresponding to genistein concentrations causing inhibition of growth of Vibrio harveyi (a model bacterium sensitive to this isoflavone) and Escherichia coli (a model bacterium resistant to genistein). Differential effects of various extracts on V. harveyi and E. coli growth, from stimulation, to no changes, to inhibition, were observed. Moreover, contrary to genistein, the tested extracts caused a decrease (to different extent) in viability of human dermal fibroblasts. These results indicate that effects of various soy isoflavone extracts on bacterial growth and viability of human cells are different, despite similar declared composition of the commercially available products.

Opis:
In this work the physicochemical and biological properties of nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films were investigated. Thin films were prepared by magnetron sputtering method. Their properties were examined by X-ray diffraction, photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical transmission method and optical profiler. Moreover, surface wettability and scratch resistance were determined. It was found that as-deposited coatings were nanocrystalline and had TiO2-anatase structure, built from crystallites in size of 24 nm. The surface of the films was homogenous, composed of closely packed grains and hydrophilic. Due to nanocrystalline structure thin films exhibited good scratch resistance. The results were correlated to the biological activity (in vitro) of thin films. Morphological changes of mouse fibroblasts (L929 cell line) after contact with the surface of TiO2 films were evaluated with the use of a contrast-phase microscope, while their viability was tested by MTT colorimetric assay. The viability of cell line upon contact with the surface of nanocrystalline TiO2 film was comparable to the control sample. L929 cells had homogenous cytoplasm and were forming a confluent monofilm, while lysis and inhibition of cell growth was not observed. Moreover, the viability in contact with surface of examined films was high. This confirms non-cytotoxic effect of TiO2 film surface on mouse fibroblasts.

Opis:
PCL (poly-ε-caprolactone) is a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer of aliphatic polyester group. However, PCL does not effectively bind to the bone in contrast to bioactive inorganic compounds such as wollastonite. For this wollastonite (WS) is regarded as a potential bioactive material for bone tissue engeenering although its main drawback is brittlennes. Therefore we synthesized polymer nanocomposite materials composed of poly-ε-caprolactone and wollastonite (PCL/wollastonite) containing either 0.5% or 5% of the latter modifying filler. And we aimed to verify biological properties of the nanocomposite PCL/WS materials, in comparison to the pure PCL, on cultures of osteoblast-like cells MG-63. The study revealed that the adherence of the osteoblast-like cells to the tested materials was enhanced by the PCL modification (PCL/5WS > PCL/0.5WS > PCL) while cell viability/proliferation was not altered. Furthermore, the activity of alkaline phosphatase indicative of osteoblast differentiation (maturation) was enhanced when the cells were cultured with either PCL/5WS or PCL/0.5WS. Overall, our results indicate that PCL-modified wollastonite improves biological properties of the basic biomaterial suggesting its potential usefulness/application for the bone tissue regeneration.
