Opis:
The recent book by Agnieszka Dziuba will be appreciated by both the ancient historians and the classical scholars in Poland for, as a monograph of a Roman woman, it has no antecedent. The study concerns Clodia’s background (“Clodia in historiography”), her portrayal by Cicero in the speech In Defense of M. Caelius Rufus, and her depiction in Catullus’ poetry. In the latter case, the author had to assume that in some of the poems Lesbia can be identified with Clodia Metelli. Despite some minor misrepresentations and misprints, the book is a sound analysis of the literary texts featuring the eponymous character. In addition, it offers a lively picture of the role women played in the Roman aristocratic society.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyse the Renaissance poem Sarca, whose authorship is attributed to the Italian humanist Pietro Bembo, and to indicate the ancient inspirations of the work. The main model for the work is Carmen 64 by Catullus, although the author also refers to other Roman poets. The intertextual relations between Sarca and the hypotexts are presented on various levels. The analysis focuses on showing parallel elements of the setting and takes in consideration the few similarities at the linguistic and stylistic level. Genre-wise Sarca is classified as an epithalamium of an aythiological character. Its characteristics typical of the Renaissance era are also highlighted. The article also brings up the history of the poem and the topic of its attribution, presenting an extensive state of research.

Opis:
Although Catullus’ relevance may appear diminished to modern audiences, his themes of intimacy and vulnerability still find echoes in newer works, notably Anne Carson’s translation of “Ad Inferias”, included in the book Nox. This analysis examines the debate about the perceived untranslatability of this poem. Catullus’ oeuvre is well known for its linguistic intricacies and explicit motifs, which often pose translation hurdles. “Ad Inferias”, a traditional elegy, seems to lack such complexities and has been frequently translated. As indicated, an existential interpretation of the verse “et mutam nequiquam alloquerer cinerem” (and that I would talk in vain to the silent ash), contextualized within Carson’s metaphysical silence concept, reframes the discussion. The article underscores the untranslatability as a primarily philosophical aspect, arising from the incommunicability of experiences centred around transcendence, death, mourning, and suffering, and presents examples of translations that maintain the emotional and thematic intensity of the piece.

Opis:
The article concerns the first part (v. 1-32) of Venantius Fortunatus’ poetic letter addressed to Lupus, a dignitary in Merovingian Gaul (VII 8). The author analyses a lengthy description of summer, which appears in this text and ultimately emerges as a simile (devoid of introductory ut) or even a metaphor (i.e. a traveller tired of the heat is a poet anxious about the fate of Lupus, while a repose in a grove involves elation over good tidings of his friend; this elation inspires a song, which justifies the creation of the second, eulogic or panegyrical part of this piece). Thus, the epic narrator transforms into the speaker of the lyric utterance. In the present article the subject and the structure  of the simile is confronted with fragments of ancient poetry, with special reference to the similes in Catullus’s elegy (c. 68, 55-66) as well as to those in Vergil’s 5th bucolic.

Opis:
This paper takes an issue of iconography of Catullus character – Lesbia. It discusses examples of artworks from the 18th and 19th centuries. The study of art pieces’ formal aspects and their comparing analysis with the poetic background are essential to determine and characterise the reception of Lesbia’s motive in art. The discussed theme is also related to the way of her representation. It is seen not only in the context of visual interpretation of poetry but also as referencing to ancient art. The problem with Lesbia’s images is considered on two levels. On the one side, it is connected with Catullus’s poems, especially Carmina 2 and 3. Two types of her images appear – “playing with pet sparrows” and “weeping over sparrow death”. On the other side of the artwork two ways of her depiction are visible. These are with Catullus’ companion and as single portrayed. They include her images as a child, young girl, and adult woman. Among them Lesbia is presented as indifferent towards lovers’ courting, flirting, or struggling with loss and death. In that context, her iconography is not only a reference to the poetic background but also it is read as an interpretation of her character by Classicism and Neoclassicism artist.
