    In the whole world, independently of the country, we observe the process of media concentration. More and more huge consortia and media groups are being created. This often causes small, individual, autonomous titles, portals, radio or television stations to be displaced. This process of media evolution also affects religious media. An example of this could be the America Media consortium, with headquarters in New York. It belongs to the Jesuits, the Catholic order, and it is administered and developed by the same order. This descriptive study presents the process of the evolutionary transformation of America weekly magazine, which is over 100-years old, into a multi-dimensional media platform with a global scope. The new and modern media consortium is developing the wonderful history of the printed Catholic magazine. It is present in all the most important media areas: magazine, radio, television and internet. According to global trends, a key factor in America Media is the social media through which they bring a large number of readers, listeners and viewers. Most popular are radio podcasts and TV interviews available via Facebook and the YouTube channel. This evolutionary process is presented in the context of variety of Catholic American media. The specific elements of the mission of the Catholic consortium, the adopted development strategy, possible perspectives of this media complex in the near future, and existing difficulties are also discussed in this paper. The study was largely based on a visit made to America Media headquarters in October 2018.

    Człowiek jako istota społeczna funkcjonuje jednocześnie w różnych wspólnotach. Jedną z nich są kościoły i związki wyznaniowe, które mają prawo do zakładania i posiadania własnych środków masowego przekazu. Za ich pośrednictwem realizują swoją misję oraz uczestniczą w życiu publicznym, wpływając na kształt życia swoich wiernych i całego państwa. Z uwagi na liczbę osób deklarujących się jako katolicy, największą siłę oddziaływania posiadają katolickie środki masowego przekazu. Możliwość zakładania i posiadania środków masowego przekazu przez różne grupy społeczne odpowiednio zorganizowane stanowi przejaw pluralizmu i gwarancję demokracji. System demokratyczny, oparty na poszanowaniu wolności i praw człowieka w wymiarze jednostkowym i zbiorowym, zakłada bowiem swobodę wypowiedzi i wolność prasy, umożliwiając każdemu wolność wyrażania swoich poglądów oraz pozyskiwania i rozpowszechniania informacji na każdy temat. Ich odbiorcy mogą się z nimi nie zgadzać, ale ich istnienie świadczy o swobodzie wypowiedzi i wolności prasy, bez której nie może być mowy o istnieniu i rozwijaniu się w pełni demokratycznego państwa i obywatelskiego społeczeństwa.
    The man as a social being functioning simultaneously in different communities. One of them consists of churches and religious associations that have the right to establish and hold their own the mass media. Through them, they may pursue their mission and participate in public life, influencing the life of the faithful and the entire state. Due to the number of people declared Catholics, the Catholic mass media have the greatest impact. The possibility of the establishment and ownership of the mass media by a duly organized various social groups is a manifestation of pluralism and guarantee of democracy. Democratic system, based on the respect for human rights and liberties in its individual and collective dimension, presupposes freedom of expression and freedom of the press, allowing each person the freedom to express their opinions, to acquire and disseminate information on every topic. Their viewers and listeners may not agree with them, but their existence testifies to the freedom of expression and freedom of the press, without which there can be no question of the existence and development of a fully democratic state and civil society.

    Przedmiotem opracowania jest analiza wydźwięku wartości chrześcijańskich w polskich mediach, a precyzyjniej – wpływu katolickiej nauki społecznej i tradycji na polskie środki masowego przekazu. Wiele uwagi poświęcono na prezentację stanowiska Stolicy Apostolskiej (prawnomiędzynarodowego reprezentanta Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego) wobec różnego rodzaju massmediów. Dokonano analizy zarówno oficjalnych dokumentów kościelnego Magisterium odnoszących się do poruszanej tematyki, jak i zapisów Konkordatu między Stolicą Apostolską a Rzecząpospolitą Polską z 28 lipca 1993 roku, który jak każda ratyfikowana umowa międzynarodowa stanowi istotny element prawa obowiązującego w Polsce. Poza tym przedstawione zostało polskie ustawodawstwo regulujące rolę i zadania środków społecznego przekazu. Teoretyczną część pracy uzupełnia ustosunkowanie się do prezentowanych w literaturze modeli relacji na linii religia-media. Przez pryzmat tej solidnej teoretyczno-prawnej bazy, autor przyjrzał się praktyce relacji między Kościołem a polskimi mediami i wizerunkowi medialnemu dominującego w Polsce (pod względem liczby wiernych) wyznania. Opracowanie koncentruje się na mediach formalnie świeckich (głównie publicznych), choć została też odnotowana specyfika nadawców oraz wydawców religijnych.
    This paper attempts to assess in which way and in how far Christian values find their reflection in Polish mass media, or, more precisely- the influence Catholic social teaching and traditions exert on Polish media. In particular we show the official standpoint represented by the Holy See ( as the representative of the Roman Catholic Church according to international law.) in its relations with mass media. A detailed analysis of the official documents issued by the Canonical Council on this matter was carried out, as well as an investigation of the records of the Concordat between the Holy See and the Polish State signed 28 July 1993, which, like all ratified international agreements, has become an integral part of established Polish law. Furthermore, we present the applicable legal regulations referring to the role and missions of mass media. The theoretical part is rounded out by exemplary models of religion-media interaction as presented in literature. This sound theoretical and legal groundwork completed, the author examined the relation between the Catholic Church and the Polish media in practice and the reputation the most prominent church in Poland ( taking the number of believers as a basis) can enjoy in the media. The investigation focuses on secular media, even though the specificity of religious TV and broadcast stations as well as publishers was taken into account.

    The important and interesting teaching of Pope Benedict XVI include, among others, the messages for World Communications Days. These messages allow know the proper for Benedict XVI understanding references between God and the modern means of communication. This papal understanding also provides an indication of how to approach the media, how to use them now and in the future. The study included the Pope’s presentation of the relationship between God and the modern civilization, the image of God in these messages and understanding of the media as in many ways positively associated with Him.
    Na ważne i interesujące nauczanie papieża Benedykta XVI składają się m.in. orędzia na Światowy Dzień Środków Społecznego Przekazu. Orędzia te pozwalają zapoznać się z właściwym Benedyktowi XVI rozumieniem odniesień między Bogiem i nowoczesnymi środkami przekazu myśli, komunikacji. To papieskie rozumienie zarazem stanowi wskazanie, jak do mediów podchodzić, jak z nich korzystać obecnie i w przyszłości. W opracowaniu uwzględniono papieską prezentację związków między Bogiem i współczesną cywilizacją, obraz Boga w omawianych orędziach oraz rozumienie mediów jako wielorako pozytywnie z Nim związanych.

    The article presents the Christian way of being present in the widely understood world of social communication. The reflections have been inspired by the Pope Benedict XVI’s teaching, especially by his Message for the 45th World Communications Day. The first and second parts focus on the papal understanding of relations with the mass media, on the possibilities of positively manage them and of God’s presence and action in the medial word. The third part focuses on the Christian way of being present in the information’s world as the result of the example given by God and as the gift of His love, as the actualization of the Christian solicitude for the common prosperity.

    In 1973, for the VII World Social Communications Day, pope Paul VI proclaimed the message The mass media and the affirmation and promotion of spiritual values. The article presents the relations between mass media and the drawing from the spiritual values. Attention was drawn to the following issues: 1) in times of the dynamic technological development essential for the human being and the world are relations with God; of these compounds depends their prosperity; 2) the human person and the world are dynamic protagonist of multiple relationships; 3) the spiritual values as having important positive significance also today; 4) understanding of the relations between the media and the spiritual values and positive significance of these compounds today and in the future.
    W 1973 roku, w związku z VII Światowym Dniem Środków Społecznego Przekazu, papież Paweł VI ogłosił orędzie Środki społecznego przekazu oraz afirmacja i promocja wartości duchowych. Artykuł prezentuje, jak w dokumencie rozumiana jest relacja między mass mediami i czerpaniem z wartości duchowych. Zwrócono uwagę na następujące zagadnienia: 1) także w czasach dynamicznego rozwoju technologicznego podstawowymi dla człowieka i świata są związki z Bogiem; to od tych związków zależy ich pomyślność; 2) ukazano człowieka jako istotę dynamiczną, jako protagonistę wielorakich relacji; 3) wskazano na pojmowanie wartości duchowych jako posiadających ważne, pozytywne znaczenie także współcześnie; 4) wskazano na rozumienie wybranych relacji między mediami i wartościami duchowymi oraz pozytywne znaczenie tych związków współcześnie i w przyszłości.

    Catholic social teaching pays attention to the necessity of showing greater interest in the process of evangelization by means of social communications, especialy through new media platforms. These platforms promote and impose their own lifestyles, behaviors, preferences, choices, hierarchies of values and motivations. The presence of the on these platforms leads to a greater awereness of what Christianity is. With an increased involvement of the Church in the media, there will be a greater space given in conversations about such themes as Church, God, faith, conscience and responsibility. Mass media puts pastoral ministry in a new perspective, but it also constitutes a real challenge, especially in so far as ethical requirements are concerned.

    Nowoczesne narzędzia komunikowania implikują nowe – adekwatne do istoty zaistniałych przemian technologicznych – formy i sposoby wypowiedzi dziennikarskich. Dotyczy to także rynku mediów religijnych, w tym periodyków katolickich. Otóż aby skutecznie realizować zadania prasy katolickiej, trzeba uwzględniać fakt doskonale znany refleksji teologicznej, określany łacińskim zwrotem fides ex visu. Wyrażenie oznacza, że wiara rodzi się również z „patrzenia”. Wobec tego forma podawcza treści religijnych, aby była skuteczna, musi uwzględniać kondycję człowieka homo videns i dlatego musi mieć wzgląd na obraz, a konkretnie na możliwości, jakie oferuje komunikacja ikoniczno-werbalna. W artykule dokonano analizy reprezentatywnych form i funkcji wypowiedzi obrazowo-słownych, niosących przekaz sensów religijnych, które obecne są na łamach dwóch wiodących tygodników katolickich, mianowicie „Gościa Niedzielnego” oraz „Tygodnika Powszechnego”.
    In the age of modern communication tools, in order to successfully carryout the tasks of the Catholic press, one must take into account the fact of well-known theological reflection as fides ex visu. The journalistic form of the transmission of religious content must also take into account the coherent conditions of human reception. Theoretical background creates visual theology. The article explores the specific visual expressions of religious expression that have been published in leading Catholic journals such as “Gość Niedzielny” and “Tygodnik Powszechny”. The author wonders how the impact on the recipient and how the media content is presented, and how it is being intensified through verbal-visual or visual-verbal communication.

    Wizualny aspekt przekazu medialnego stanowi często przedmiot refleksji zarówno w nauce o komunikowaniu, jak i na gruncie nauk teologicznych. Współobecność słowa i obrazu oraz ich wzajemne relacje stanowią element konstytutywny tygodników definiowanych jako katolickie. Nowatorstwo i oryginalność rozwiązań polega na konkretnych realizacjach, które zmierzają do wizualizacji treści przekazu medialnego w dwóch relacjach wizualno-werbalnych (głównie okładki pism) i werbalno-wizualnych (poszczególne artykuły brane pod uwagę holistycznie). Dynamika form obrazowych oraz korelacja między tekstem a obrazem (fotografią) nie tylko intensyfikuje przekaz medialny, ale także wpisuje się w nurt nowoczesnej estetyki przekazu prasowego, a co za tym idzie podnosi jakość i atrakcyjność „nowego” języka komunikacji treści religijnych. Do grona najbardziej opiniotwórczych należy bez wątpienia katowicki „Gość Niedzielny” i krakowski „Tygodnik Powszechny”. Troska i dbałość o ten wymiar są nader widoczne w edycjach obu tygodników. Werbalna i wizualna płaszczyzna stanowi tu ważne narzędzie pośredniczenia w przekazie treści religijnych, ewangelizacyjnych i duszpasterskich.
    The visual aspect of media coverage is the subject of reflection in communication science as well as in theology. The coherence of the word and the image and their relationship are constitutive elements of the Polish Catholic press. Innovation and originality of solutions consists in concrete realizations. New proposals are aimed at visualizing the content of the media. This concerns the visual-verbal relationships (mainly the cover of the writings) and verbal-visual (most articles). The dynamics of image forms and the correlation between text and image (photography) intensifies the media message and also fits in with the modern aesthetics of the press. One of the effects is the better quality and attractiveness of the „new” language of religious communication. Among the most opinion-forming Catholic writings in Poland are Katowice’s „Gość Niedzielny” and Cracow „Tygodnik Powszechny”. Care and attention to this dimension are evident in both editions. The verbal and visual plane is an important mediator in the transmission of religious, evangelistic and pastoral content.

    Nauczanie Kościoła na temat środków społecznego przekazu wielokrotnie dotyka problematyki wychowania dzieci i młodzieży. Mass media wzięły bowiem na siebie niektóre zadania rodziny czy szkoły, proponując i promując różne wartości. W ten sposób przekaz medialny dotyka samego serca życia rodzinnego. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie skutecznych sposobów przezwyciężenia zagrożeń wynikających z traktowania dziecka jako łatwego konsumenta mediów. W dokumentach Kościoła znajdziemy szereg wskazówek dawanych twórcom środków przekazu, rodzicom, nauczycielom i władzom publicznym, które mogą pomóc w wychowaniu dziecka do mądrego i krytycznego korzystania z mediów. Biorą one pod uwagę bezbronność dziecka wobec świata i wobec osób dorosłych, jak również ich otwartość na każdy medialny przekaz. Tylko wykształcenie w dziecku krytycznych zdolności może zapoczątkować proces budzenia w nim zachowań prospołecznych.
    Children – open to messages and sensations and often thoughtless – are the most immediate recipients of mass media. In the world of new technologies it is often media that “bring up” children. In this way media content penetrates the very heart of the family. Market reports confirm that the youngest children are excessive media consumers. Documents of the Church show effective ways to overcome the threats arising from treating children as media consumers. Within these documents we can find a number of suggestions given to media professionals, parents, teachers and authorities, which may help to teach children to be wise and critical users of media. Those pieces of advice take into account children’s vulnerability and their openness to any media message. It is obvious that parents, as the primary and most important educators of their children, are also the first to teach them about media. They should develop critical thinking of their children and provide a good example by their own thoughtful and selective use of media. Moreover, parents should teach children to use their free time in a rational way and open them to a culture which rejects everything that is contrary to human dignity. Only in this way the pro‑social behaviour of children like friendly interaction, altruism, reduction of aggression and stereotypes can be encouraged.
