    The Catholic Youth Association in Szadek was established in 1934, after reorganisation of the Polish Youth Association, which had existed earlier. It carried out religious and social work within the framework of the Catholic Action. The patron of the Association in Szadek in 1934–1939 was the parish priest Rev. Edward Lidtke, and its church assistants were Rev. Stefan Filisiak (1934–1936) and Rev. Bernard Głoskowski (1936–1939). The Szadek troops of male and female youth together with troops in Małyń, Zygry, Zadzim and Korczew formed the Szadek section of the Sieradz branch, which was part of the Włocławek diocese Association. The aim of this organization was to bring up young people in the spirit of the Catholic faith and patriotism. The forms of such education included recollections, “social” days, congresses, conventions, sports competitions and pilgrimages. The events that Szadek youth participated in were, among others, the Eucharistic Congress of the Sieradz Region in Sieradz (1934), district rallies and sporting events (in Zduńska Wola, Sieradz and Złoczew), diocese jamborees (in Charłupia Mała and Włocławek), and a nationwide rally in Częstochowa (1938). The Catholic Association in Szadek did not resume activity after 1945.

    Social teaching of subsequent popes had to be brought to life. The efforts were intensified at the beginning of the XX century when pope Pius X announced the need for development of Catholic Actions in social life. The problem was later raised by Benedict XV and especially Pius XI. In Poland, the popes’ calls faced an uneven response. At first, the actions were taken in the Archdiocese of Cracow, and later by primate August Hlond. The Catholic League, as this was the name of the organization coordinating efforts of Catholic associations, was supposed to be further developed in other dioceses. Finally, its structure was supposed to be centralized. Between 1927 and 1929, a Catholic League was organized in the Diocese of Lublin. Amongst the efforts of its bishop, Marian Leon Fulman, its actions incorporated many cleric and secular persons. The efforts were made to develop local structures, make contact with the press and the General Committee of the League. Despite the propaganda developed also in Lublin’s press, boisterously announced actions ground to a halt. The aim of the article is to describe the origin, the structure and the importance of the Catholic League in the Diocese of Lublin.

    Kazimiera Gajowczyk graduated from the Catholic Social School in Poznan and until 1939 was the director of the Office of the Catholic Action Institute in Poznan. Together with Fr. Antoni Banaszak she edited  the Institute's monthly "Doniesienia" ("Reports") addressed for the parish sections of the Catholic Action. Fr. Antoni Banaszak was a meritorious   activist of the Catholic Action in Poznan. After liberation from a Nazi concentration  camp he lived in France and worked for the Polish Catholic Mission in Paris,  up to 1982 he was rector of the Polish Seminary in Paris. He encouraged Kazimiera Gajowczyk to write the text presented here, in which  she describes her experience from the activity of the Catholic Action before the Second World War. He explained his role in a letter dated 8 Dec. 1989, a photocopy  of which is reproduced herewith.

    Zamierzeniem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie struktur i form pracy stowarzyszeń katolickich składających się na pracę Akcji Katolickiej w parafii św. Bartłomieja w Baranowie w latach 1927–1939. Uczestnicy stowarzyszeń Akcji Katolickiej wspominają czas działania w Akcji Katolickiej jako okres, w którym wzrastała nie tylko odpowiedzialna postawa religijna, ale też rosła i krzepła świadomość narodowa, którą wyrabiano przez pogadanki i odczyty, oprawę świąt narodowych i kształtowanie właściwych postaw patriotycznych. W różne struktury Akcji Katolickiej było zaangażowane ponad 200 osób. Akcja Katolicka nie była zjawiskiem marginalnym w parafii. Ze wspomnień i kronik KS MM i KS MŻ wynika, że parafia znana była w diecezji płockiej z ciekawych pomysłów i cennych inicjatyw społecznych. Akcja Katolicka wpłynęła też zasadniczo na postawę życiową swoich uczestników. Młodzi ludzie wiedzieli, jak się zachować w przyszłości i jaką drogą pójść.
    The intention of this study was to present structures and forms of work Catholic associations that made up the work of Catholic Action in the parish of St. Bartholome in Baranowo in the years 1927–1939. Participants associations of Catholic Action mention the operation time in the Catholic Action as a period in which increased not only responsible religious attitude, but also grew and solidified national consciousness, which were made through talks and lectures, setting national holidays and appropriate patriotic attitudes. More than 200 people were involved in the various structures of the Catholic Action. Catholic Action was not a marginal phenomenon in the parish. From the memories and chronicles of KS MM and KS MŻ follows that the parish was known for interesting ideas and valuable social initiatives in the Diocese of Plock. Catholic Action had also an influence on the attitude of life of its participants. Young people knew how to behave in the future and which way to go.

    The creation of Catholic Action in Poland was prepared very carefully for several years. Rev. August Hlond the Primate of Poland invited other church organizations with the statutes and organizational relationship with spiritual authority to join in the ranks of Catholic Action. Catholic Action Statute was approved by the Pope Pius XI with the letter dated 27 November 1930, stating its compliance with the directives of the Holy See. The celebration of Christ the King was established the day of the Catholic Action. In October 1932, the Supreme Institute for Catholic Action called on the diocesan institutes with an appeal to discern the future leaders of this association among the Catholic intelligentsia. Catholic Action has set itself the goal of re-introducing Jesus Christ to the family, school and society. The family as a whole has become the main influence of the Catholic Action movement. The goal of the newly restored Catholic Action (after 1989 transformation) is compatible with the goal of the entire Church: co-operation of Church hierarchy and lay people in helping people. In other words: the deepening and broadening of faith (including Christian morality), so that Christ could return to the conscience, family, national traditions, the relationship between social groups and to international relations.

    The mission of the Church that has been created by Christ not only needs the leadership of a hierarchical structure but also the group of lay believers who act as active supporters and helpers in the proper and effective functioning of the institution. Prudent and thoughtful engagement of the laity in the apostolic endeavours and responsibilities have been appreciated by the pope Pius XI, who established a society called Catholic Action. This organization has undertaken various apostolic and priestly activities in many countries throughout Europe, including Poland, as it was building a unified nation after gaining national independence in the beginning of the twentieth century. This time in history has created extraordinary opportunities for the laity as Catholic Action was opening its structures and setting goals. In retrospective, such activity can be perceived the providential tool that has played an important role in the development of the Catholic Church in Poland. Examining the level of participation and engagement of the Catholic Action in the matters of the Church before the Second World War, one may boldly say that it was a very well developed association gathering an enormous number a of lay believers. It had a pivotal role in assessing the social, cultural political and economical needs in practically every community and responding to those needs in an active way. The development of the Catholic Action was phenomenal between the years of 1918 -1939. In the first ten years of its existence, it was predominantly popular among the elites of the catholic intelligentsia, burgesses, but also peasantry. In 1939, there were 750,000 members in this organization, which ranks it among the most influential in the social arena of Poland at that time.

    The reactivation of the Catholic Action (CA) in Poland, which ended its activity in 1939, would have not been possible without the pre-war structures of this secular Catholic organization. Although the break in the existence of this organization in Poland lasted nearly 60 years, but the old form of activity, program and many of its works encouraged the Polish Church, by the initiative of John Paul II, to revive this entity. This article outlines the ideological basis for the creation of the first Catholic Action in the world. Its main organizational forms are also presented in the article, and at the same time, the similarity between the pre-war structures of CA in Poland and their Italian prototype. The last part of the paper outlines the process of creating pre-war structures of the Catholic Action in Poland, its legal basis and areas of activity. Althaough after the Second Vatican Council, there was another perception of the laity in the world, and its role in the Church increased, but the pre-war Catholic Action became a basis for creating a new organization in Poland. The reactivated Polish CA took on a rather traditional model, preserving the institution of the Church assistant as a secular liaison with the hierarchy of the Church.
    Reaktywacja Akcji Katolickiej (AK) w Polsce, która skończyła swoją faktyczną działalność w 1939 r., byłaby mało realna bez przedwojennych struktur tej organizacji zrzeszającej katolików świeckich. Wprawdzie przerwa w istnieniu tej organizacji w Polsce trwała blisko 60 lat, ale dawna forma działalności, program i liczne jej dzieła zachęciły polski Kościół, z inicjatywy Jana Pawła II, do odrodzenia tego podmiotu. W niniejszym artykule ukazano w zarysie podstawy ideologiczne tworzenia pierwszej Akcji Katolickiej na świecie. Zaprezentowano także jej główne formy organizacyjne, przedstawiając równocześnie podobieństwo struktur przedwojennej organizacji katolików świeckich w Polsce do jej włoskiego pierwowzoru. W ostatniej części opracowania zarysowano przebieg tworzenia struktur przedwojennej Akcji Katolickiej w Polsce, podstawy prawne jej funkcjonowania oraz obszary działalności. Wprawdzie na świecie po Soborze Watykańskim II, nastąpiło inne postrzeganie laikatu, a jego rola w Kościele wzrosła, ale przedwojenna Akcja Katolicka stała się w Polsce bazą do tworzenia nowej organizacji. Reaktywowana AK przybrała dosyć tradycyjny model, z zachowaniem instytucji asystenta kościelnego jako łącznika świeckich z hierarchią Kościoła.

    The author concentrates on the Catholic Youth Association’s activities in the interwar period on the example of the parish of St. Florian in Jednorożec (Przasnysz county), presented against the background of other parishes in Kurpie, located in Płock and Łomża Dioceses. The author outlines the history of the youth affiliates of the Catholic Action after the reform in 1934. Although the affiliates in Jednorożec were much smaller and less active than in central Kurpie, learning their history complements the depiction of the socio-cultural development of Jednorożec village in the inter-war period. The article also allows learning about the basic forms and the importance of the Catholic Youth Association’s activity in Kurpian parishes.
    Autorka koncentruje się na działalności Katolickiego Stowarzyszenia Młodzieży w okresie międzywojennym na przykładzie parafii pw. św. Floriana w Jednorożcu Jednorożec w pow. przasnyskim, przedstawionej na tle innych parafii kurpiowskich w diecezji płockiej i łomżyńskiej. Artykuł przedstawia dzieje młodzieżowych kolumn Akcji Katolickiej po reformie z 1934 r. Choć w parafii Jednorożec były to oddziały o wiele mniejsze i nie działające tak prężnie jak w centralnej Kurpiowszczyźnie, poznanie ich historii uzupełnia funkcjonujący w literaturze obraz rozwoju społeczno-kulturalnego wsi Jednorożec w okresie międzywojennym. Tekst pozwala też poznać podstawowe formy i znaczenie działalności KSM w parafiach kurpiowskich.

    The article The activity of Bishop Stanislaw Adamski in the period of the Second Polish Republic in a complex way presents the shaping of the concept by Bishop Adamski after Poland regained Independence. The complex issues of this period in Polish history prompted the authors to pay particular attention to the subject of the state, law, science, the role of the Catholic Church and the economy in the thought of Bishop Stanislaw Adamski – a figure with extraordinary talents – a priest, citizen, social worker, economist, and Senator.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest postaci ks. prałata Antoniego Henryka Szumana, który przewodniczy II grupie męczenników Diecezji Pelplińskiej z okresu II Wojny Światowej, w trwającym obecnie procesie beatyfikacyjnym. Cała uwaga w tekście skupiona została na opisaniu konkretnej działalności tego kapłana na polu jego walki z alkoholizmem wraz z jego następstwami. Pelpliński Sługa Boży uważał to zagadnienie za największą plagę społeczną lat międzywojennych na terenie Polski. Tekst wykazuje zaangażowanie ks. Szumana we wspomniany problem na niemal wszystkich polach jego pracy duszpasterskiej oraz szeroko pojętej działalności społecznej. Artykuł podkreśla także niesamowitą wiedzę  i obycie tego kapłana – na miarę jego czasów – z opisywaną tematyką, a co za tym idzie doskonałe kompetencję ks. H. Szumana.
    The article is dedicated to the person of prelate Antoni  Henryk Szuman, which conducts the second group of Polish martyrs from Roman Catholic Diocese of Pelplin that were murded during the Second World War. The text focuses on describing the activity of this priest on the field of combating alcoholism and its consequences. Servant of God from Pelplin claimed that alcoholism was the biggest social problem in Poland during the inter-war period. The text shows great dedication of this priest to this case in all his priestly and social activates. The article highlights incredible knowledge of this person and acquaintance with this subject and following excellent competencies of Szuman.

    In vorliegender Studie ist die Entwicklung der Soziallehre der Kirche von Rerum Novarum an im Schlüssel der Reaktionsfähigkeit oder Reaktionsunfähigkeit der Kirche auf die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen und in Hinblick auf die Entwicklung dieser Lehre von der ideologischen Konfrontation mit den modernen Ideologien zu den letzten Enzykliken, die in den Vordergrund die Zivilisation der Liebe und Barmherzigkeit stellen, als spezifisches christliches gesellschaftliches Paradigma ohne Ambition, dass die Kirche an der Macht partizipieren würde, vorgestellt. Auf jeden Fall beeinflusst die Soziallehre mit ihren Grundprinzipien in allen Zeiträumen die Entwicklung der europäischen Kultur und ihrer Rechtsordnung. Akzentverlagerung von der Alternative zu den bestehenden Gesellschaftssystemen auf die ethische Rolle der Soziallehre der Kirche stärkt zunehmend die Bestrebung für die Durchsetzung der Religionsfreiheit als ein grundlegendes Menschenrecht. Und gleichzeitig eine klare Unterscheidung zwischen der Mission der religiösen und politischen Institutionen sowie der zentralen Rolle des Staatsbürgers und Gläubigers in einer demokratischen und pluralistischen Gesellschaft.
    The article presents the development of the social teaching of the Church from Rerum novarum onwards from the view of responsiveness or non- responsiveness to the social changes and regarding the development of the teaching from ideological confrontation with modern ideologies to the last encyclicals which put emphasis on the civilization of love and charity as a specific social paradigm without the ambition that the Church would be in power. In any case, in all periods, the social teaching with its basic principles has influenced the development of the European culture and its legal order. The shift of focus from the alternative to the existent social systems to the ethical role of the social teaching of the Church has strengthened the endeavours to establish religious freedom as a basic human right. And at the same time, the clear differentiation between the mission of religious and political institutions and the central role of a citizen and believer in a democratic and pluralist society.

    Among the people who created the ambiance of the Poznań literary life in the interwar period were priests-men of letters, such as the poet Ewaryst Nawrowski, the authors of reportages and memoirs - Nikodem Cieszyński, Ignacy Posadzy, Józef Kłos. An important part was played by priests-men of learning linked to the University of Poznań and the Poznań Seminary who presented their works at sessions of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences but also gave talks to more general audiences during events held both by Church and lay organizations. This group included among other such priests as Bronisław Gładysz, Kazimierz Kowalski, Władysław Hozakowski, Edward Warmiński. The Church culture forming center was the St. Adalbert Booksellers, an important publisher of Polish and world literature, which also published a cultural journal for the intelligentsia called “Tęcza”. Another such center was the Principal Institute of Catholic Action, publisher of the “Kultura” weekly, one of the leading journals of this profile in Poland.

    The teaching of the Roman Catholic religion at school involves a variety of didactic, educational and evangelizing measures. Among them special care is taken to support students in developing motivation for Christian action. The scope of this catechetical activity has been clearly defined in curriculum documents for religious education, referred to in the core curriculum of catechesis and the religious education syllabus.The paper analyzes the teaching of the Roman Catholic religion at school as a means conducive to motivating young people to Christian action. First, the nature of the teaching of the Roman Catholic religion in middle school and high schools is indicated. In this context, attention is drawn to the core curriculum in the aspect of motivating young people to Christian action. The following factors are presented in a sequence: goals, objectives and content of religious education as well as guidance how to achieve the objectives of the curriculum related to the above-mentioned are of work of the religion teacher. A brief concluding section includes, besides a synthesis of the discussed points, indications concerning empirical research.
