Opis:
The principal notion of the article–a “backward catastrophe”– stands for a catastrophe which occurs unseen until it becomes recognized and which broadens its destructive activity until it has been recognized. This concept in the article has been referred to the Shoah. The main thesis is that the recognition of the actual influence of the Holocaust began in Polish culture in the mid-1980s (largely it started with the film by Claude Lanzmann Shoah and the essay by Jan Błoński Biedni Polacy patrzą na getto [“The Poor Poles Look at the Ghetto”]), that is when the question: “What happened to the Jews”, assumes the form: “Did the things that happened to the Jews, also happened to the Poles?”. Cognitive and ethical reorientation leads to the revealing of the hidden consequences of the Holocaust reaching as far as the present day and undermining the foundations of collective identity. In order to understand this situation (and adopt potentially preventive actions) Polish society should be recognized as a postcatastrophic one.

The article is an attempt to reflect on the relationship between the subject and the environment in a state of crisis on example of the novel by Łukasz Barys entitled The Bones You Carry in Your Pocket. The author proposes a psychoanalytic reading strategy, the main theme of which are ‘spectres’ (Derrida) associated with the traumogenic relationship between the ‘I’ and nature. Be text analyses climate catastrophe in the context of hyperobject theory (Morton) and their entanglement in local structure.

The paper describes application of catastrophe theory for analysis of trends of real estate prices inPoznan. It turns out that the evolution of the real estate market is comprised of two main processes: long-term evolution in the area of a non-degenerate stability and discontinuous, rapid changes in the area of a degenerate stability. In the macro scale, the construction and developing branch contributes largely to the Gross Domestic Product affecting overall economic environment. In the micro scale, however, the knowledge about future price trends may help to decide whether or not to buy or sell the house property.

In this document, the authors present the results of the long-term monitoring of the condition of the eyes of victims of the Chernobyl catastrophe. The patient examinations were conducted using our system of standard inspection and description of the condition of the eye. We have summarized the development of this system in another paper. Ocular effects in patients as a result of the Chernobyl accident have been classified either as specific irradiation injuries, attributable only to radiation exposure, or ophthalmopathology that is observed under normal conditions, but for which radiation exposure is an important risk factor. This division is particularly apparent when examining the clean-up workers in Chernobyl.

Opis:
Aleksandra Brylska in the article The Nuclear Catastrophe of Capitalism. Polish Responses to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster in Japan the Polish press discourse on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster analyzes the terms of the relationship between this event and capitalism. It raises the question to what extent a tragic event in the field of technology can undermine and weaken the capitalist framework of the world, and to what extent – in line with Naomi Klein's thought – it even contributes to the strengthening of this ideology. In the Polish press, the failure quickly ceased to be a technology event, and turned into a tragedy for international financial markets and the economy. The author argues that it is capitalism that shapes reality, including the experience of a catastrophe (both natural and technological) and the manner of talking about it. The power plant failure has polluted the global imagination, but it has also shown how polluted the world is by thinking in terms of profit and loss. The failure in Fukushima also showed that the crisis of capitalism is not something unequivocal, and that it mutates itself and is able to feed on the disaster that originally devastated it. An important aspect in the analyzed material is also the status and transformations within the perception of Japan as a technocratic country. The purpose of this article is to check how the myths of capitalism and technocratism are related to each other and how the catastrophe changes the status of these two areas.

Opis:
Since the 1990s the number of dystopian films projecting apocalyptic visions of global catastrophe and dra- matizing an ecological agenda has radically increased. Much of this trend is inspired by anxieties about the future repercussions of today’s actions and the collective responsibility for the future of our planet. One film that aptly represents this category is Christopher Nolan’s futuristic dystopia Interstellar (2014). Blending ge- neric conventions of space-travel, science-fiction and moral fable, the film, with its bleak vision of ecological disaster, social unrest, and economic decline, clearly evokes the dystopian paradigm in which the projected reality is perceived as significantly worse than the here and now (sensu Sargent 1994:5). However, contrary to many dystopias offering nihilistic or anti-utopian denouements, Christopher Nolan’s apocalyptic vision clearly posits a progressive and definite possibility of utopian impulse, which is encapsulated by the final resolution of the global catastrophe. The core of the argument is that the neutralization of the dystopian impulse and the resulting projection of the utopian vision are facilitated by the imposition of an interstitial space constructed in the vein of postmodern poetics: an ambiguous fifth dimensional library, in which books perform a two-fold function. While intratextually, they serve as a catalyst between the tangibly dystopian present and the possibly utopian future, extratextually, they function as a universal mode of communication transcending the constraints of time and space.

The article describes the newly developed innovative methods that allow monitoring the dynamic processes occurring in the city and evaluating it as an open, complex and dynamic system. Based on these methods, an information accumulative interactive model of analysis of functioning and development of the city was developed. The developed model is the basis for a cognitive research model that allows: identifying the necessary and sufficient number of indicators of sustainability, crises and possible disasters in the city; forming step-by-step strategies for rehabilitation of urban areas; interactively analyzing the reaction of the urban environment to planned adjustments to optimize its vital processes.

Opis:
The article focuses on the media practice of using visual representations of polar bears to illustrate information about climate change. It starts with a short description about the iconic status that climate discourse attributes to these type of images. The article addresses the question about how this iconic status is defined and what the media specificity of the polar bear is as a part of “charismatic megafauna.” These iconic properties are placed in contexts related to communicating issues related to climate change, and as a consequence the article emphasises the subsequent disappointment that these kind of representations have brought about. To begin with the article focuses on a reconstruction of the images of polar bears that were created at a time when it became a species in danger of extinction. Subsequently, the article characterizes the representations of the species in relation to the effects of climate change. The analysis refers to the typology proposed by Dorothea Born, who suggested that three types of such representations are namely: “anthropomorphized bears,” “bear in context,” “bear in danger.” Finally, the focus turns to the victimising dimension of these representations. When seen from the perspective of the polar bear as a victim, there is a need to emphasize the role of the suffering body, which can be seen as a common denominator in the human-non-human condition of vulnerability.

A method of predicting the influence random events on the critical functionality of an object is discussed. Research is performed regarding the possibility of extending a prediction model to a prediction system by functionally uniting this model with additional models or recognizing the type of influence of a random event on a complex technical object. The proposed solution is importatnt because executing a prediction system instead of a prediction model allows one to detect critical situations that, when influencing technical objects, can result in the catastrophic loss of functionality of the corresponding objects.

The work reflects Olga Tokarczuk’s short story Dress Rehearsal which deals with the topic of apocalypse, climatic catastrophe, and climate change. The article is a part of a scientific work, which is a master’s thesis dealing with the complex issue of the subjectivity of animals and nature, as well as the common environment and post-environment, and the study of the relationship between humans and non-humans. In the work, the Nobel Prize winner comes under the influence of a ‘world-creator’ and an ‘intense observer’, thus human relations can be complicated in times of the end of the world and how human attitudes towards animals and the world change. This time of the end, marked by Giorgio Agamben with the messianic era, allows for a certain non-action towards reality, and empathy and compassion begin being a remedy for centuries of objectification of other beings.

This necessity is stressed by researchers who represent children’s studies and who emphasize the importance of children’s perspective in literature and in scientific and social discourses. Figura’s analysis of selected literary texts allows us to see this turn towards the child, which at the same time is also the child’s turn towards nature.

Opis:
This article aims to demonstrate the meaning is attached to fire in Erna Rosenstein’s poetry and art. Based on the pioneering analyses by Dorota Jarecka, I suggest that the particularly intense presence of fire in the artist's oil paintings, assemblages and poems is driven by the need to create a constellation of random objects, myths and autobiographical material centered on the experience of witnessing her parents' deaths in 1942. By analyzing various approaches to fire, I show that Rosenstein searches for a form of invigorating and evolving destruction in her poetry (which I define as “pyrophytic art”) which would enable her to fantasize about a world after a catastrophe, a world without human life. In this approach, poetry emerges as an extension of the ideas presented in her art. Taking at times narrative, fairy-tale or mythographic forms, poetry defines Rosenstein’s artistic idiolect in a more individual way than art could, allowing the artist's voice, her own speaking self, to be emphasized and dynamized.

Forecasting social phenomena may be hampered in many ways. This is because in nature of these phenomena lies strong and multilateral connection with other social phenomena; but not only – also physical and biological (natural) ones. The content of this publication constitutes presentation of chosen problems of forecasting in social sciences. The attention in the article was focused among others on deterministic chaos theory, on the attempt of its implementation to phenomena from the scope (or from borderline) of social sciences: economy, logistics, science about safety etc. Moreover, one of the threads of ponderation was the attempt to consider whether it’s possible to create so-called final theory. The aim of the publication is to signalize possibilities of taking advantage of seemingly exotic for “political scientists” methodology of modeling and explaining phenomena, having its source in exact sciences (in chaos theory) to study social phenomena and processes.
