Opis:
The starting point for this study is the thesis that disability multidimensionally determines human functioning, enhances human uniqueness and is favourable for emphasizing a person’s individuality. This inspires to use a study of an individual case as a method not only of its cognition and description but also its understanding. The method also makes it easier to construct individual concepts of functioning of a person with disability in the jungle of many biological, psychological and social determinants. Moreover, for the researcher – the method may become a valuable source of experience and an inspiration for his/her own (not only scientific) development. To provide justification for this thesis, a survey of case studies is made, with special focus on the authorial typology of didactic (educational) goals – the aims which are usually underrated in scientific works. What follows are the possible typologies of the discussed method and the author’s suggestions concerning the construction of a case study of a disabled person. The text is completed with final conclusions.

Requirements Engineering (RE) is recognized as one of the most important (yet difficult) areas of software engineering that has a significant impact on other areas of IT projects and their final outcomes. Empirical studies investigating this impact are hard to conduct, mainly due to the great effort required. It is thus difficult for both researchers and industry practitioners to make evidence-based evaluations about how decisions about RE practices translate into requirement quality and influence other project areas. We propose an idea of a lightweight approach utilizing widely-used tools to enable such an evaluation without extensive effort. This is illustrated with a pilot study where the data from six industrial projects from a single organization were analyzed and three metrics regarding the requirement quality, rework effort, and testing were used to demonstrate the impact of different RE techniques. We also discuss the factors that are important for enabling the broader adoption of the proposed approach.

The aim of this study was to analyse postural load during tasks related to milking cows of 2 farmers on 2 different farms (one with a manual milk transport system, the other with a fully automated milk transport system) as a case study. The participants were full-time farmers, they were both healthy and experienced in their job. The Ovako Working Posture Analyzing System (OWAS) was used to evaluate postural load and postural risk. Postural load was medium for the farmer on the farm with a manual milk transport system and high for the farmer working on the farm with a fully automated milk transport system. Thus, it can be concluded that a higher level of farm mechanization not always mean that the farmer’s postural load is lower, but limitation of OWAS should be considered.

The present paper discusses the issue of value capturing. The author’s objective was to identify factors determining the character of value capturing. In order to meet the objective, value capturing, along with several variations of the phenomenon, were identified. Next, an analysis of two companies, in light of value capturing and factors determining the character of the phenomenon was conducted. Results indicate that the character is determined by endogenous factors associated with the process of creating and transforming value by companies.Purpose – The aim of the paper is to identify factors determining the specific division of value created by companies. Methods – The study utilized a case study approach which compares a pair of companies. The study compared the attitude of other companies and their approach towards the above-mentioned pair, which may be justified by sensitivity of some areas of the issue. The selection of the case study approach results from an early stage of studies on value capturing. Results – Research results indicate that companies with limited capability for independent transformation of use value into exchange value, insufficient realization of some activities in value chain in relation to needs, and poor tangible and intangible assets, are prone to asymmetrical division of value.Limitations – In general, qualitative studies precede quantitative ones, and enable more general conclusions to be drawn. Therefore, further studies on a more sizeable sample are feasible in order to reach more applicable conclusions and for them to serve as a basis for actions to be undertaken by companies. Practical implications – Results of the study allow general guidelines for developing business models and determining direction of development for companies to be established.Novelty of the study – It seems that the present study is relatively novel due to a short period of interest in value capturing, and consequently, few publications discussing the issue available. Further studies associated with the present issue ought to examine pairs of cooperating entities which divide value asymmetrically. However, it requires methods of collecting sensitive data to be developed.

Mobile technologies have increasingly become more and more widespread not only for making our daily lives easier and simpler, but also for their enormous potential in educational development. This case study examines university students’ satisfaction with and perceptions towards the use of blended learning and flipped classroom models in foreign language learning (FLL) contexts. The methodology used in this study involves the descriptive and quantitative analysis of responses generated from students studying English as a foreign language at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at the University of Jordan. The analysis of these responses gave the author of this study an idea about what factors a teacher should take into account when introducing blended learning and flipped classroom models into a classroom.

The Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach to teaching, although well-known, is still little used. However, its fundamental educational value is increasingly often emphasised, consisting of identifying real problems, shaping pro-active attitudes in students, and creating links between educational institutions and various types of external organisation. The article aims to present the challenges and benefits related to the teaching process in PBL based on the analysis of the LINCE project, implemented according to the same methodology simultaneously in Poland, Spain and Italy. Based on the results of the research and the literature review, recommendations are made regarding the possibility of broader use of PBL methodology in entrepreneurship education. The work is based on an exploratory research approach, using qualitative research methodology and case study technigue.

New technologies of information and communication content spread via the Internet are enhancing globalized interpersonal interaction and reshaping social relations. Many Arab E-media appeared to advocate to Arab and Muslim societies features, in order to preserve their stereotypical image and prohibit local identity extinction. The case study of an Arab E-Magazine led to a generalized content including spiritual messages and features, some of them were specific to the Arab and Muslims but a great number were universal. The Happy Arabic Family concept treated by the E-Magazine seemed to be inspired by global morals and ethics. Sticking with universal morals and virtues seemed to be the way to preserve local identity in a multicultural space. Besides, a limited audience interest was noted leading to reducing the efficiency of the E-Magazine and driving the researcher to ask the question about the identity of the ideal „communication bowl“ for Family Media.

Opis:
Invasive fungal sphenoid sinusitis is a rare and potential life threating disease. An incidence rate of fungal sphenoiditis among patients with isolated sphenoid disease varies from 4.5% to 26.8%. Generally the symptoms of sphenoid sinusitis are non-specific and include headaches, visual disorder, post nasal drip, nasal obstruction and paralysis or paresis of single or multiplicitous cranial nerves. In this study, a case of isolated invasive fungal left sphenoiditis in immunocompetent 56-year-old woman is described. The first sinus computed tomography (CT) examination revealed complete opacification of the left sphenoid sinus, she second CT scans showed also erosions of the sphenoid sinus bony walls. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed and intraoperatively fixed and dilated left pupil was observed thus surgery team decided to finish an operation immediately. Ophthalmologist diagnosed the left oculomotor nerve paresis. Pathologic analysis demonstrated fungal hyphae morphologically identical to Aspergillus spp. Due to suspicion of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, increasing pneumocephalus and manifestation of mental changes in our subject, endoscopic reoperation with CFS fistula closure was done nine days after the first operation. The patient was treated with intravenous voriconazole and ceftriaxone for one month, and after discharge with itraconazole for 3 months. The full recovery of the left oculomotor nerve function ensued 4 months after surgery and no signs of recurrence of the fungal disease were present up to date.
Częstość występowania grzybiczego zapalenia zatok wśród pacjentów z izolowanym zapaleniem zatoki klinowej wynosi 4.5% do 26.8%. Najczęściej objawy zapalenia zatok klinowych są niespecyficzne i obejmują bóle głowy, zaburzenia widzenia, spływanie po tylnej ścianie gardła, niedrożność nosa oraz pojedyncze lub mnogie porażenie bądź niedowład nerwów czaszkowych. W tej pracy opisany został przypadek izolowanego, inwazyjnego zapalenia lewej zatoki klinowej u 56-letniej pacjentki bez zaburzeń odporności. Pierwsze badanie tomografii komputerowej zatok (TK) ujawniło całkowite zacienienie lewej zatoki klinowej, a drugie badanie TK wykazało również erozję ścian zatoki klinowej. Przeprowadzono endoskopowy zabieg zatok i śródoperacyjnie zaobserwowano nieruchomą i poszerzoną lewą źrenicę, z tego powodu zespół chirurgiczny zdecydował o natychmiastowym przerwaniu zabiegu.

Opis:
Training with the use of problem-based learning has become increasingly popular at all levels of education, including business education. An example of this type of learning is case study method. This method allows developing skills and competencies used by managers in their work, for example ability to synthesize, identify problems, and make decisions. Despite many advantages of the case study method and its widespread use in the training of executives and managers, it is used to illustrate the problems of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) relatively rarely. Many business case studies are based on the problems faced by large companies, and not those from the SME sector, which greatly reduces the possibility of using this method of training for managers and owners of SMEs. This paper helps to solve this problem by presenting a model used to create business case studies devoted to the needs of SMEs. Case studies created on the base of this model can be used to train managers, supervisors, owners of such companies and prospective candidates. The model can also be developed and modified, which increases its potential application in other training areas. The model was developed and tested within the INNOCASE project (project website: www.innocase.zie.pg.gda.pl).

The aims of this article are: (1) presentation of changes in the level of globalization in Kenya and Tanzania (2) comparison of countries in terms of globalization level (3) identification of the main globalization processes taking place in the countries. To ensure economic development in Tanzania and Kenya, it is necessary to implement globalization processes and monitor the level of globalization. For this purpose, statistical data analysis and comparative analysis using the KOF Index have been employed. Progressing globalization was found in Kenya and Tanzania, and based on this, it was decided to make a thorough analysis of which aspects have increased the most. For this purpose, the KOF Index of Globalisation analysis was used for these countries and on this basis the strongest development areas in the last 22 years were identified, as well as a comparative analysis of globalization in Kenya and Tanzania was made. The studies have shown that the level of globalization is increasing in both Kenya and Tanzania, with Kenya exhibiting a higher level. This difference might primarily stem from the economic policy orientation – Kenya focuses on trade openness, whereas Tanzania emphasizes support for domestic sectors of the economy and local entrepreneurs. The areas in which countries have developed the most are social processes. The ongoing processes of globalization can support both the growth and economic development of the analyzed countries, thereby potentially help reduce the main social and economic challenges in Kenya and Tanzania.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to discuss the efficiency of teaching process with use of the digitalized methods, emphasis laid on the use of video case studies. RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Since the vast majority of the students are now highly digitalized, their expectations towards the methods applied to teaching changes compared to past practices. Therefore with the use of observation of the in-class interactions and the quiz results of the teaching sessions, we compare the efficiency of using video and traditional case studies. The study is conducted on the sample of 119 undergraduate students of International Business. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The paper starts with a brief summary of the existing research on using video case studies in teaching. Next we describe the reasoning for our own empirical research, followed by the research design and method explanation. We discuss the results in division for qualitative in-class observations and quantitative accuracy of the in-class quiz. The paper ends with conclusions including study limitations and future recommendations.  RESEARCH RESULTS: The study shows that application of up-to-date technological tools brings better efficiency to the teaching-learning process. The students perception of the subject is higher if the knowledge is passed with use – in our case – of the video. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The study confirms that diversifying the teaching methods and bringing technology into class allows more efficient learning process. Therefore, it is recommended that – if possible – educators incorporate more interactive, virtual tools into their teaching programs.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyse the behaviour of suspects during preparatory proceedings and defendants during court proceedings in terms of confessions, appeals of confession, providing explanations, changing these explanations and refusing to admit guilt, as well as the impact of their behaviour on the course and outcome of circumstantial trials in murder cases. The analysis shows that the suspects/accused undertake various actions to shift the suspicions of the investigating authorities, especially when the victim’s body cannot be found. To a large extent, they follow a belief that if there is no body, then there is no crime. The perpetrators in the analysed cases refused to provide explanations, refused to answer questions, confessed, appealed their confessions, provided explanations, changed their explanations and slandered other persons, claiming that the others had committed or participated in the crime. In most of the cases in question, the line of defence adopted by the defendants had no impact on the outcome of the trial, in which the perpetrators were convicted. Any possible impact can only be seen in the punishment to which they were ultimately sentenced. The explanations provided by some of the suspects during the preparatory proceedings made it possible to direct the investigation and reconstruct the course of the incident, whereas subsequent appeals of confession and multiple changes to the explanations did not affect such findings. The article is based on an analysis of court files concerning eight circumstantial homicide cases, in which the perpetrators were convicted despite a lack of corpus delicti.

Opis:
Wypracowano dwa warianty rozwiązań możliwych do realizacji: - przystosowanie istniejącego systemu informatycznego tak, aby otrzymywane informacje były spójne i mogły posłużyć do lepszego zarządzania firmą, - zakupienie i wdrożenie nowego systemu informatycznego klasy ERP. Ostatecznie pozostano przy wariancie pierwszym. Jednakże - wykorzystując przeprowadzone podczas audytu analizy, przemodelowano sposób planowania procesu głównego, zmieniono strukturę organizacyjną - wspierając łańcuch logistyczny i dokonano całkowitej przebudowy strategii rozwoju.
The paper presents a case study in fuel branch, i.e. an audit related to post-implementation analysis of ERP system. The audit was aimed mainly at development of a report on analysis of implementation of the ERP system in examined company and presentation of the report to company management. Furthermore the audit was aimed at presentation of processes and functions implemented in the system, and making a proposal for indispensable changes within use of the functions of the ERP system. There have been developed two versions to be possible for realization, i.e. - adaptation of the existing informatics system in such a way to get consistent information to be helpful for better managing the company, or - purchase and implementation of a new informatics ERP system. Finally the first version has been chosen. However as a result of analyses made during audit, a method of planning of the main process was remodelled, the organization chart was changed, and the strategy of development was totally reconstructed with support of the logistics chain. Due to organizational changes, arrangement of processes, selection of right personnel and determination of director.s board, the company made profit just in the first half-year.

Sustainable development refers to the development of a business in such a way that future generations will be able to satisfy the same needs. This article describes how sustainable development can be measured by economic performance and a positive impact on the natural environment. A general indicator of a company’s environmental impact is presented in the article. It can be determined, on the one hand, by a company’s environmental impact, and on the other hand, by savings in the use of natural resources, which is associated with savings in a financial sense. Therefore, it can be used to analyze the progress of sustainability in terms of environmental and economic performance. The case study provides an example of how emissions and energy factors can be analyzed to form a synthetic indicator and create a general indicator.

Background: In large-scale corporations in the software engineering context information overload problems occur as stakeholders continuously produce useful information on process life-cycle issues, matters related to specific products under development, etc. Information overload makes finding relevant information (e.g., how did the company apply the requirements process for product X?) challenging, which is in the primary focus of this paper. Contribution: In this study the authors aimed at evaluating the ease of implementing a semantic knowledge management system at Ericsson, including the essential components of such systems (such as text processing, ontologies, semantic annotation and semantic search). Thereafter, feedback on the usefulness of the system was collected from practitioners. Method: A single case study was conducted at a development site of Ericsson AB in Sweden. Results: It was found that semantic knowledge management systems are challenging to implement, this refers in particular to the implementation and integration of ontologies. Specific ontologies for structuring and filtering are essential, such as domain ontologies and ontologies distinct to the organization. Conclusion: To be readily adopted and transferable to practice, desired ontologies need to be implemented and integrated into semantic knowledge management frameworks with ease, given that the desired ontologies are dependent on organizations and domains.

Geometallurgy is a growing area within a mineral processing industry. It brings together tasks of geologists and mineral processing engineers to do short and medium term production planning. How-ever, it is also striving to deal with long term tasks such as changes in either production flow sheet or considering different scenarios. This paper demonstrates capabilities of geometallurgy through two case studies from perspective of Minerals and Metallurgical Engineering division Lulea University of Technology. A classification system of geometallurgical usages and approaches was developed in order to describe a working framework. A practical meaning of classification system was proved in two case studies: Mikheevskoye (Russia) and Malmberget (Sweden) projects. These case studies, where geometallurgy was applied in a rather systematic way, have shown the amount of work required for moving the project within the geometallurgical framework, which corresponds to shift of the projects location within the geometallurgical classification system.

Social media is an area of social expression. Internet users like to publish their views online, often remaining anonymous. Virtual discussions often concern controversial topics, suicide included. The anonymity enables people to present their views bluntly. The aim of this study was to analyze Internet users’ comments on a teenager’s suicide. The content was examined in terms of categories of comments, ways of expression of Internet users and division into types of comments. The study was conducted using the content analysis method. The author analyzed 144 comments and 507 reactions following a post on one social network. The study helped identify two sections of comments. One included opinions on suicide (divided into categories: empathic, informative, condolence, interpretative, other). Users posting comments in this section expressed empathy and sympathy for the victim’s family. The other group of Internet users published negative and hurtful content in relation to this particular case and to suicides in general. The second section of comments concerned the responses of Internet users to one controversial entry that provoked a heated discussion. One user’s opinion indicated a negative attitude, lacking in empathy for the teenager’s suicide. The response focused on the dispute referring to the above attitude of the Internet user, ignoring the substance of the entry. The study justifies a conclusion that Internet users express their opinions on topics that are considered socially taboo. They are not afraid to air their feelings and take part in difficult conversations.

Aim. In a qualitative empirical exploration, the authors use case study research to identify opportunities for re-education of specific learning disabilities in two cases. They identify and analyse the methods and organisation of teaching and the intervention plan for change. They evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention procedures and highlight specific practical experiences of educators in working with pupils. Methods. The study analyses and interprets the risk of specific learning disabilities, identifies specific learning disabilities. In an empirical qualitative investigation, the authors use case studies and case studies that highlight two types of specific learning disabilities. Results. The studies confirm that specific developmental learning disabilities affect the lives not only of the pupils themselves, the parents, but not least the educators in the teaching process. The authors analyse and identify specific re-education methods in the implementation of the teaching process, pointing out the difficulty of solving the problem and unlearning special educators. Conclusion. The authors point out the need for selection of different methods of re-education of learning disorders on the basis of the individuality of the pupil, but also on the basis of different forms of solving problem areas in terms of recommendations of the special educator and the actual implementation of the teaching process by the educator.

The article addresses the issue of the social implications of participating in religious groups, with particular emphasis on shaping the type of social capital among members of the mentioned religious groups or any group of a religious nature. It is not sufficiently represented in research work on modern sociology, especially the sociology of religious and modern lives, considering the context of the functioning of a modern man in their interpersonal space. To this end, qualitative research was carried out involving individual case studies. Various qualitative techniques were used: interviews, an analysis of document contents, photographs, biographies, observing participants in their social activities, trust, social ties (among members of the mentioned groups), the social roles of members, the implementation of social functions, participation in the common good, and the values and norms of social coexistence that guide the studied person. These imply the emergence of negative social capital, closing social capital, amoral familism and strong bonds in the norms developed by the group to which the analysed case belongs.

It has been long pointed that Indonesian education system embraces active learning to enhance critical thinking. However, active learning techniques are not yet optimally introduced in Indonesian education settings. Studies have shown case studies combined with the concept map method improving students’ critical thinking. However, there is a lack of evidence related to this method in the Indonesian education system. The presented study examined the effect of a case study combined with the concept map on improving critical thinking skills in Indonesian first-year college students. Three groups attended classes with the same class objectives and contents, consisting of eight weekly meetings. The only difference among the groups was the educational strategy; case study combined with concept map (CSCM), case study alone (CS), and traditional lecture style with no specific active learning techniques (Control). Results indicated that the CSCM method is most effective in improving critical thinking skills. Although CSCM was also most effective on improving critical thinking disposition, differences among groups were not statistically significant.

In this work, we show the results from two different types of approaches designed to map the Arctic (Polar) perception of young learners in Poland and Lithuania. The first case study is composed of both closed and open questions (Case Study 1), while the second one is a closed, multiple choice type of questionnaire (Case Study 2). We have questioned a total of 274 learners in Case Study 1 and 80 in Case Study 2. In both cases, learners were divided into four age groups. The results show that the Case Study 1 questionnaire, due to its struc- ture, provided more comprehensive information about the state of awareness among young learners in comparison with the limited option for answers (no open option) in Case Study 2. The results show that documentaries and nature films together are the dominating sources of information for all age groups. A very interesting finding came out from Case Study 1, which shows that school lessons dominate in public schools, with exception to high schools, however, other means of learning were also mentioned. Educational workshops play a very important part in learning among three youngest groups of students of public schools. In case of auto- nomic schools, it is lessons that play a key role in knowledge transfer at all levels of education, which is most likely related to the educational system in these schools, which regularly conduct

The article identifies the optimal location of the warehouse distribution centre for Slovenian companies in the international environment. The process of location selection takes into account a series of interconnected factors, including flows of goods between countries; the level of development of the transport system and transport infrastructure; the number of transport companies; labour costs and labour productivity; and the tax benefits existing in each country. Scientific literature mentions various methods for choosing a warehouse location, which differ in complexity and in the use of different qualitative and quantitative factors. However, the methods discussed have a disadvantage in that they use the current input variables when defining the optimal location. Choosing the optimal warehouse location is an important long-term logistics process, which should consider the fact that the environment in which companies operate is constantly changing. Using the proposed approach, future trends in the international environment are presented, which enables a better choice of warehouse location in the long run. Through this approach, companies can save on logistic costs, while also providing better quality logistics services. The analysis represents a starting point for deciding the location of a warehouse, but does not constitute a complete set of guidelines for companies to follow, as the choice of a particular location is dependent upon the complexity of the international environment in which a company operates.

Opis:
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a computer-based information system for enterprise integration. ERP integrates information from all functional areas of enterprise to support management processes. The implementation of ERP is an expensive and time-consuming process but for contemporary enterprises it is a necessity. The effective enterprise management is impossible without on-line information about business processes executed in all functional areas. The ERP implementation involves a strategic decision that influences enterprise development for many years. Thus, ERP systems should evolve together with enterprises. The paper proposes a benchmarking methodology that enables evaluating the implementation of an ERP system in three manufacturing companies focused on make to-order production. The enterprises make small series or single prototype production. The research is based on benchmarking of the enterprises that implemented ERP systems in the past years. It involves comparison of the most important financial ratios and statistical data extracted from the ERP system. Results of data analysis are a basis for a proposed procedure of ERP evaluation. The procedure enables not only evaluating the ERP system implementation but also determining functional areas that require support, changing business processes or functionality of ERP. The proposed benchmarking methodology presents how much the ERP system is adapted to enterprise requirements. Examples presented are based on a case study of Polish enterprises.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been approached in different ways by University faculties, secondary school teachers, and researches. However, the contribution to the ESD system made by international university projects has not been sufficiently discussed in the literature so far. The paper presents a case study and theoretical analysis of the role played by international university cooperation projects aimed at putting into practice the integration of inclass and extra-curriculum activities in ESD. This approach to education for sustainable development has been adopted in the Kaliningrad region (Russian Federation), one of the cross-border Baltic regions. The case study covers all the three dimensions of sustainability, i.e. ecological, economic and social development, as well as the improvement of regional environment. Legislative documents and projects developed by federal and regional government are mentioned, as well as obstacles to and prospects for the development of the integrated ESD approach. The project called “Lagoons as crossroads for tourism and interactions of peoples of South-East Baltic: from the history to present” is conducted by three countries and continues the work started in the CROSSROADS project. Its outcomes are used to support the conclusions drawn from existing theoretical approaches.

The aim of the following text is to present various manners of thinking about adults by five-year olds. On the basis of group interviews the author tries to recognize how children perceive adults. Despite the fact that this research ought to be treated only as a case study, the outcome shown in the essay depicts the children’s world. What is more it also shows how we, the adults, rear children. It was demonstrated that children view us as individuals physically resembling themselves, extremely busy at work, privileged when it comes to doing things that children cannot, great role models and good guardians. They do realize that in the adult world there are people who can do harm to them. To us it may seem that all these revelations are nothing new, but the results can show that we fail to treat children as partners.

The purpose of this paper is to describe so-called “marked” intonation. What this means is that the intonation contour is indicated by a sharply rising pitch. This is a case study that focuses on the forms and functions of that type of rising intonation patterns which occur not in questions (interrogative mood) but in statements (indicative mood). The linguistic data consists of audio recording and transcriptions taken from the GeWiss, a comparative corpus of spoken academic language. The analysis shows that intonation contours are not subordinate to grammar and that they do not depend on modality.

Phytoextraction field experiments were conducted on soil contaminated with radiocesium to determine the capacity of autochthonous grasses and weeds to accumulate 137Cs. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of spontaneously growing vegetation as a tool for decontamination of non-agricultural contaminated land. As a test field, the closed monitored area of the radioactive wastewater treatment plant of the Nuclear Power Plant in Jaslovské Bohunice, Slovakia was used. Contamination was irregularly distributed from the level of background to spots with maximal activity up to 900 Bq/g soil. Sequential extraction analysis of soil samples showed the following extractability of radiocesium (as percent of the total): water < 0.01%; 1 M MgCl2 = 0.3-1.1%; 1 M CH3COONa = 0.3-0.9%; 0.04 M NH4Cl (in 25% CH3COOH) = 0.9-1.4%; and 30% H2O2 - 0.02 M HNO3 = 4.5-9.0%. Specific radioactivity of the most efficiently bioaccumulating plant species did not exceed 4.0 kBq kg 1 (dry weight biomass). These correspond to the soil-to-plant transfer factor (TF) values up to 44.4 × 10 4 (Bq kg 1 crop, d.w.)/(Bq kg 1 soil, d.w.). Aggregated transfer factor (Tag) of the average sample of the whole crop harvested from defined area was 0.5 × 10 5 (Bq kg 1 d.w. crop)/(Bq m 2 soil). It can be concluded that low mobility of radiocesium in analysed soil type, confirmed by sequential extraction analyses, is the main hindrance for practical application of autochthonous plants as a phytoremediation tool for aged contaminated area of non-cultivated sites. Plant cover can efficiently serve only as a soil surface-stabilising layer, mitigating the migration of radiocesium into the surrounding environment.

Purpose: This article provides an understanding of international retailers’ successes and failures when expanding in the Polish market. Accordingly, the objectives of this article were to define and identify what are the critical factors of success and failures of international retailers’ strategies while expanding in the Polish market according to the retailers themselves. Methodology: Adopting an interpretative research approach, this article elaborates a multiple explanatory case study design to discover how existing theory on internationalization compared to how internationalization is experienced and conceptualized by practitioners in their natural contexts. Findings: Twenty cases were studied among which were found four successful retailers and two who had failed. Coding of categories highlighted five critical success factors and five critical failure factors. Pricing strategy, necessity of adapting operations to local market, learning by doing, e-commerce and early entry timing appeared as factors of success or at least as “facilitating factors.” Choosing the inappropriate entry method, underestimating competition, developing the retail network and retail environment at a slow pace and not giving enough means of abnegation led to failures in Poland. Originality: This article contributes to filling two main gaps identified in the literature review. Many different theoretical approaches exist but no conclusive framework has emerged. Besides, most concepts were developed and tested on western European countries and nothing proved adequate to the specific retail landscape of eastern Europeans countries such as Poland.

This paper describes a case study of a 56-year-old patient suffering from a rare type of early onset Alzheimer’s disease (EOAD). The selection of the topic arose from the desire to draw more attention to this group of patients. While numerous publications in the relevant Polish-language literature have been dedicated to speech disorders in late onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), which is diagnosed in people over 65, there are scarce descriptions of cases of speech disorders in EOAD. The research made use of a survey method (the author’s original survey questionnaire fi lled in by the patient’s wife), and the test method (using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, selected tasks from the so-called Łucki’s tests and the author’s own tests). The analysis of the collected material revealed serious defi cits in the patient’s actualisation of words, fl uency, understanding of compound structures, reading with understanding, and writing, which has resulted in his withdrawal from communication.

Process-tracing is a method of within-case analysis, which can provide causal explanations of various social phenomena. Its focus on developing and testing causal theories attracts interest among qualitative researchers who do not want to limit their inquiries to exploratory or descriptive aims. At the same time, the case-centric variant of process-tracing, in which theories are used pragmatically as heuristic devices, provides a systematic but also creative way of researching singular events and processes. This paper attempts to show what process-tracing is and what it is not, what its variants are and how they should be used. It also probes the ontological and epistemological limits of the method, by showing how it can be used in idealist and interpretive research.
