Opis:
Quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Palaeozoic sequence from the Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep basement in the Tarnogród–Stryi area were evaluated based on the results of geochemical analyses of 475 rock samples collected from 45 wells. The best source rocks were found in the Silurian strata where the present total organic carbon (TOC) content is up to 2.6 wt%. They occur in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, where the median of the present and the initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the individual wells amount to 0.98 and 1.6 wt%, respectively. The Cambrian and Ordovician strata have a poorer hydrocarbon potential and their present TOC content never exceeds 1 wt%. In all of the investigated Lower Palaeozoic strata, organic matter is represented by the oil-prone Type-II kerogen deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of source rocks ranges from early mature (the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes) in selected zones of the Silurian strata in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, through the middle and the final phase of “oil window” in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Polish part of the study area, to the overmature stage in the Ordovician strata in the south-eastern part of the study area (Ukraine).

Biological markers and stable carbon isotopic compositions of bitumen impregnating the Pleistocene and Holocene sediments around the Starunia palaeontological site (Carpathian region, Ukraine) near discovered remnants of a mammoth and three woolly rhinoceroses, and one almost completely preserved rhinoceros carcass found in 1907 and 1929, were investigated. The research was carried out to assess genetic connections between the bitumen and oils from the nearby deep accumulations of the Boryslav-Pokuttya and Skyba units of the Carpathians. Another aim of these geochemical studies was to reveal the secondary geochemical processes (oxidation and biodegradation) influencing the bitumen, and to determine which environments have been favourable or unfavourable for the preservation of large Pleistocene vertebrates. Bitumen included within the near-surface rocks are not genetically connected with residual organic matter present in Quaternary sediments. Geochemical features, such as distributions of pentacyclic triterpanes and steranes, biomarker parameters and isotope composition indicate that all bitumens originate from oil-prone, Type II kerogen with insignificant admixture of terrestrial Type III kerogen in the middle stage of catagenesis. The oils occurring in deep accumulations in the Starunia area were the sole source of bitumen found in the near-surface sediments. Input of immature organic matter to bitumen from Pleistocene and Holocene sediments has not been found. The main factors differentiating the bitumen were: biodegradation, water washing and/or weathering. Additional influence of transport of bitumen by brine was found. The most favourable conditions for preservation of large, extinct mammals within the Pleistocene muds exist in the vicinity of Nos 22 and 23 boreholes, where bitumen is best preserved. The worst conditions were found in the vicinity of Nos 1, 4, 4' and 15 boreholes. Intensification of biodegradation and weathering effects were followed by intensive, chaotic changes of the remnants of large Pleistocene mammals.

Geochemical studies were conducted on bitumen and salts saturating the Pleistocene and Holocene sediments from an abandoned ozokerite mine in Starunia. This location is noted for the discovery of remnants of a mammoth and three woolly rhinoceroses in 1907, and a nearly completely preserved rhinoceros carcass in 1929. The bitumen (oil) and brines (chloride ions) were preserving agents for the large Pleistocene mammals. The main mass of organic carbon hosted in the Pleistocene muds is related to bitumen originating from oil migrating from deep accumulations within the Boryslav-Pokuttya Unit. The highest analysed bitumen content is 9.26 wt%. The chloride ion content, originating from highly concentrated brines ascending from the salt-bearing Miocene Vorotyshcha beds, vary from 0 to 4.66 wt% but this usually does not exceed 1 wt%. The natural pathways of underground fluids (oil, gas and water) migration within the Quaternary sediments were disturbed by intensive ozokerite mining operations run between the last three decades of the 19th century and 1960. Therefore, the present preservation and conservation conditions of large, extinct mammals' remains can be different from those prevailing during the Pleistocene, when the mammals were buried. Taking into consideration the contents of the remaining preservatives: chloride and bitumen, the most favourable zone for fossils conservation and preservation is located close to boreholes Nos 22, 23, 28 and 36N, where the thickness of Pleistocene muds exceeds 2 metres. Generally, the spatial distributions of bitumen and chloride ion contents within the Holocene sediments and salt-bearing Miocene Vorotyshcha beds are very similar to those in the Pleistocene sediments.

Permanent changes in market surrounded the Carpathian region of Ukraine, in its political and socio-economic environment, formation the new possibilities and conditions activities of the community require the development and adoption of new appropriate management decisions and adapt them to rapidly changing conditions of the market environment, improve the competitiveness of the territory and the relevant improvement well-being of every member of the community. It was found that only joint efforts of the local government, business structure, NGO's and the whole community of the Carpathian region it is possible to transform region to be open for investors and tourists from Ukraine and the European Union. This is because the Carpathian region is characterized by sustainable development of local communities, harmonious combination of innovation economic activity, environmental agriculture and, consequently, promotion and implementation of health and recreational tourism. The strategy of sustainable development of the territory – is, above all, the implementing of the changes policy, it is – plan and selection of appropriate local communities of areas of the Carpathian region, when and how all these changes are implemented. Thus it is necessary have recognition that not every change can justify both their expectations and the corresponding calculations, and the recommendations of relevant experts. In addition, the definition of "what changes are the best" everyone understands differently. In the same time, strategy of the sustainable development of tourism – is not only the choice of strategic objectives – is, above all, the choice of the real possibilities of each local community in the region, which they already possess, or even can get to achieve the main goal – improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Carpathians as a holistic administrative and territorial unit of Ukraine. The proposed methodology of building a strategy of sustainable tourism development in the Carpathian region reflects a new ambitious goals of d improvement the province, which indicate the way to achieving its sustainable future as a dynamic, attractive to live, work, investment and worth visiting places on the map of Ukraine. The purpose of strategy for sustainable tourism development – the transformation of the Carpathians territory in a safe space with a clean environment, rich natural resources, historical and cultural heritage, attractive to residents, businesses, investors and tourists, that requires the fundamental changes in approaches to all areas of his life.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of absolute dating and biostratigraphical analysis carried out for alluvial sediments of an abandoned Starunia ozokerite mine located in the Velyky Lukavets River valley, in which large mammal remains were discovered in the first half of the 20th century. The sediments build up three terrace levels. The highest one, up to 8 m high (terrace II), is likely to be associated with a stage of aggradation, as well as with a short episode of valley broadening, which occurred in the Weichselian Late Pleniglacial. The lower one, 4 m high (terrace I), is most likely to be linked with the Holocene, despite a considerable transformation of its top due to mining activity. The lower part of this terrace cover bears coarse-grained channel sediments dated to 120.6-58.9 ka BP (Eemian Interglacial?-Early Pleniglacial - OIS 5e, 4 and 3), and overbank (distal floodplain) mud with intercalations of biogenic deposits (peat, peat mud and biogenic mud). The overbank deposits are dated to 48.2-11.11 ka BP (Glinde Interstadial?-Younger Dryas, OIS 3-2) and are overlain by Holocene (OIS 1) mud and biogenic deposits. In boreholes drilled in the vicinity of the present-day river channel, younger sediments occur more frequently. These include sediments originating from the Late Weichselian overlain by Holocene sediments. However, sediments originating exclusively from the Holocene are infrequent. The deposition of sediments took place in specific conditions of a permanent saturation of the environment with brine, petroleum and thickened bitumen. In the longest period of deposition (48.2-1.27 ka BP), ephemeral swamps, ponds and lakes were developed in different parts of the floodplain. They were marked by the presence of: Juncus glaucus/effusus, J. articulatus, Typha sp., Batrachium sp., Potamogeton filliformis, Bidens tripartita, Ranunculus sceleratus and Phragmites communis, as well as by halophytic species, like: Zannichellia palustris, Triglochin maritimum, Schoenoplectus tabernemontani, Puccinelia distans and Eleocharis palustris. Rhythmic oscillations between cold and warm climatic conditions, typical of the Weichselian age and well identified in Western Europe, are here marked by the changes of plant communities (woody assemblages passing into steppe and tundra), but are not noticeably recorded in the sediments of the Velyky Lukavets River. This shows that the greatest part of the discussed period involved the formation of poorly differentiated silty overbank sediments with intercalations of biogenic sediments. However, the variability of sediments provides evidence for extreme events which occurred in the Holocene.

Opis:
Based on previously published XRD and DTA-TG data, the clay mineral assemblages composition of water-insoluble residue of Miocene evaporites of the Ukrainian Carpathian region is presented. Data on the composition of pelitic fraction minerals were obtained from studies of Egerian–Eggenburgian and Badenian evaporites of the Carpathian Foredeep, namely gypsum, rock salt and potash salts of the Stebnyk and Kalush-Holyn’ deposits, and rock salt from the Transcarpathian Trough. In the gypsum facies, the clay minerals are mainly allogenic and are represented by dioctahedral smectite, illite and chlorite, while authigenic minerals such as trioctahedral smectite and illite are present in minor amounts. Clay minerals of rock salt facies are represented by illite, chlorite and mixed-layer illite-smectite in Egerian–Eggenburgian rock salt. In Badenian rock salt, smectite, corrensite and mixed-layer chlorite-smectite are also present. In potash facies deposits, only illite and chlorite occur. The degree of transformation of clay minerals depends upon basin brine concentration. As the brine concentration increases, the mineral assemblage changes towards vanishing of swelling clay minerals. Volcanic activity had also a great impact on clay minerals composition – pyroclastic material alteration resulted in the occurrence of smectite, corrensite and mixed-layer chlorite-smectite in the Badenian rock salt.

Opis:
Within the Carpathian Foredeep, open marine basin evolved into restricted evaporitic basin during the Badenian (Serravallian), and along the Carpathian front chloride sub-basins developed. The studies of foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton were conducted to obtain new biostratigraphic data which could constrain the age and correlation of the salt deposits between Wieliczka-Bochnia in Poland, and Kalush in the Ukraine. These studies proved that chloride deposits (in the Ukrainian territory also potassium salts) originated generally during the same period corresponding to the Late Badenian NN6 zone and undivided NN6-NN7 zone. The uppermost part of sub-evaporitic beds belongs to the boundary between the NN5 and NN6 zones, although locally (Bochnia Salt Mine) only the NN6 zone was found. This suggests that the lower boundary of salt deposits can be diachronous. Deposits overlying the salt (Chodenice and lowermost part of Grabowiec beds - Bogucice Sands) represent the Late Badenian NN6/NN7 zone. The similarity in age between the folded Middle Miocene strata in Poland (Zgłobice Unit) and the Ukraine (Sambir Unit) implies that they were folded during the same time and that they can represent one tectonic unit, develo ped in front of the advancing Carpathian orogen.

The aim of this study is to compare the assemblages of foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton from the Middle Miocene sediments from SE Poland and western Ukraine. Detailed investigations revealed a high degree of similarity of foraminiferal assemblages of the Pecten/Spirialis beds of Poland and the Kosiv Formation of Ukraine. Assemblages from both areas are characterized by numerous arenaceous species of foraminifera (Hyperammina granulosa, Ammodiscus miocenicus, Haplophragmoides indentatus, H. laminatus), radiolarians, pteropods and index planktic species Velapertina indigena. High degrees of similarity also display assemblages from the Krakowiec beds (Poland) and the Dashava Formation (Ukraine). The lower parts of both subdivisions are characterized by the presence of Anomalinoides dividens. Saccammina sarmatica, Bolivina sarmatica, Brizalina nisporenica, and Porosononion granosum occur in the upper parts. Chloropycean Halicoryne morelleti is a characteristic element of the assemblages. The calcareous nannoplankton assemblages contain almost identical species. The deposits lying above the evaporites (which belong to the NN6 zone) are included into the NN6, undivided NN6-NN7, and NN7 zones. The gradual impoverishment of the species of the upper part of NN6 and the lower part of NN7 zones is observed. The assemblages of the Krakowiec beds and the upper part of the Kosiv and Dashava formations are of low species diversity and are mainly restricted to a few species with high abundance. The assemblage is composed of placoliths (Coccolithus and Reticulofenestra species), high number of the reworked nannofossils and damaged elements.

Results of a microgravity survey performed in the abandoned Starunia ozokerite mine (Carpathian region, Ukraine), where in the early 20th century well preserved remains of large, extinct mammals were found, are discussed in the paper. A number of gravity anomalies indicating the geological heterogeneity at the sub-Quaternary strata have been observed. The assumed measurement observations also enabled the authors to interpret the results in view of density changes in the Quaternary strata. Most of the registered microanomalies coincide with the high-halite and ozokeritic Miocene salt-bearing Vorotyshcha beds. The distribution of the microanomalies reveals neither their correlation with the thickness of overburdens, nor any gravity impact of numerous abandoned wells. Gravity anomalies were mostly connected with the lithology of sediments and rocks obtained from geological boreholes drilled in the years 2007 and 2008, on the basis of which the anomalies' origin could be determined. A concentric, relatively negative gravity microanomaly of ca. 25 m in diameter was registered in the place, where very well preserved relics of the woolly rhinoceros had been found. They may be indicative of the existence of Pleistocene lakes (and/or palaeoswamps), into which the woolly rhinoceroses had sunk. Hence, an assumption can be made that the further search for successive zoological relics can be made in areas with similar anomalies under the low-density sub-Quaternary subcrop.

In Quaternary sediments filling the Velyky Lukavets River valley, at the abandoned ozokerite mine (= Ropyshche) in Starunia, perfectly preserved carcasses of large mammals were discovered in the first half of the 20th century. The study area includes a fragment of the valley between Molotkiv and Starunia, and its close vicinity. The area belongs to several morphostructural and geomorphic units of the Outer Eastern Carpathians and the Carpathian Foreland. The asymmetric, subsequent valley is a part of the Mizhbystrytska Upland, where flattened ridges and flat bulges represent fragments of planation surfaces: the upper (the Krasna level), elevated 170 m above the valley bottom and linked with the Late Pliocene, and the lower one (the Loyova level), rising at 100 m and linked with the Eopleistocene. Several flat surfaces are visible on valley slopes, probably representing river terraces formed before the Late Pleistocene. The valley attained its maximum depth during the Eemian Interglacial (OIS 5e). In the Ropyshche area, probably three terrace steps built of Weichselian and Holocene sediments (OIS 5d - 1) were developed, but their top surfaces are almost completely destroyed by mining operations. The recent, meandering river bed follows the zones of decreased cohesiveness of rocks resulting from mining activity and is becoming somewhat deepened during inundations. The transported material is mostly coarse-clastic one. The two latter factors may suggest that the river is underloaded due to declining agriculture and decreasing intensity of outwash. The top surface of the sub-Quaternary basement is deformed by subsidence and collapse of mine workings, but the relief of valley bottom allows for further exploration for remnants of large mammals not only in the Ropyscche area but along the whole studied segment of the valley, as well.

Opis:
The Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous carbonate sediments developed in a narrow, Ukrainian part of the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep show high facies diversity. Based upon thin section studies, the authors identified eleven principal microfacies varieties. Three main stages of development of carbonate platform were distinguished: (i) Oxfordian–Early Kimmeridgian, (ii) Kimmeridgian–Tithonian, and (iii) Berriasian–Valanginian. The Oxfordian sediments are rather thin and represent both the outer and inner, distally steepened ramp facies. In the Late Kimmeridgian and, mainly, in the Tithonian, the intensive growth of rimmed platform took place with distinct zones of peritidal, margin barrier and platform slope, bearing calciturbidite facies. Development of the rimmed platform was controlled by synsedimentary tectonic movements along faults rejuvenated southwest of the Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone. In the Berriasian–Valanginian, the dominant process was sedimentation onto not-rimmed platform controlled by small sea-level changes. Both the facies development and literature data indicate that the Late Jurassic sedimentation in the Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement shows considerable differences in comparison to that of the Polish part. In the studied successions, large Oxfordian microbial-siliceous sponge reef complexes, known from the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement and other areas in Europe, were rare. In the study area carbonate buildups were encountered mainly in the intervals representing the Upper Kimmeridgian–Tithonian where small, microbial-sponge and microbial-coral biostromes or patch-reefs were formed. Their growth was presumably restricted to a narrow zone of the upper slope, close to ooidal-bioclastic margin platform facies. In the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement, the Late Jurassic sedimentation took place on a vast, homoclinal ramp while in the Ukrainian part it proceeded on a narrow, distally steepened ramp and rimmed platform with distinct marginal platform barrier. Similar platform facies distribution in both regions appeared mainly in the Early Cretaceous, although with some stratigraphical differences. The facies distribution of the Upper Jurassic sediments was closely controlled by the block structure of the basement and by orientation of the main, transcontinental Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone, which supports the opinion on its activity in the Mesozoic era. The Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement located over the Palaeozoic Kokhanivka Block, between the Krakovets and Holy Cross fault zones, includes predominantly the slope, marginal and inner platform facies. Facies observed over the Palaeozoic Rava Ruska Block (south-western part of the East-European Platform), between the Holy Cross and Rava Ruska fault zones, represents mainly the inner platform and the peri-shore deposits.

The review article presents an analysis of Paul Robert Magocsi’s approach to the history and present time of Carpathian Rus’ evident in his texts on the subject. The author investigates the ways in which the Canadian historian describes the history of the region in comparison with his synthesis of the history of Ukraine on the one hand, and with premises of modernism and constructivism in his studies on nations and nationalism on the other.

Opis:
This thematic issue of Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae contains a set of papers presenting results of a special research project entitled "Petroleum exploration prospectives and hydrocarbon potential of the Miocene strata and Mesozoic–Palaeozoic basement in the borderland area of Poland and Ukraine", led by research teams from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków and the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute in Warsaw. The objective of this paper is determination of the geological and geochemical conditions, 1-D and 2-D modelling of petroleum processes and petroleum systems and their influence on the prospectives of hydrocarbon exploration of the Miocene strata in the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep and its Palaeozoic–Mesozoic basement. In particular, a coherent model of geological structure of the area, based both on the synthesis of the earlier published data and on new results of palynological studies of the Upper Precambrian and Lower Palaeozoic, is given. New data on microfacies of the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous strata and on sedimentology, geochemistry and micropalaeontology of the Middle Miocene rocks are presented.

Opis:
This paper presents cooperation across boundaries as co-operative measures, being goal-oriented to the economic, social, scientific, technical, environmental, cultural, and other relations, initiating and deepening among territorial communities, local authorities both in Ukraine and in Poland. The methodological basis of the study consists of the following approaches to the study of Euroregions: geographical, political, administrative, functional. Definitions of the Euroregion as the main form of cross-border cooperation have been determined, and institutions promoting cross-border cooperation between Ukraine and Poland have been studied. The institutional support for cross-border cooperation within the framework of the “Carpathian” and “Bug” Euroregions has been examined. Features of the Ukrainian-Polish Euroregions – “Carpathian” and “Bug” have been characterized. Problematic issues concerning the Euroregion cross-border cooperation support have been identified. Moreover, recommendations on improving the institutional component of the Ukrainian-Polish CBC within the “Carpathian” and the “Bug” Euroregions are given herein.
Zbadano instytucjonalne wsparcie współpracy transgranicznej w ramach euroregionów „Karpacki” i „Bug.” Scharakteryzowano cechy ukraińsko-polskich euroregionów – „Karpacki” i „Bug.” Zidentyfikowano problematyczne kwestie dotyczące wsparcia współpracy transgranicznej w euroregionie. Ponadto podano zalecenia dotyczące usprawnienia komponentu instytucjonalnego ukraińsko-polskiej współpracy transgranicznej w ramach euroregionów „Karpacki” i „Bug.”

Opis:
The discovery of large Pleistocene mammals in 1907 and 1929 in the Starunia ozokerite mine, about 130 kilometres southeast of Lviv, Ukraine, was a spectacular scientific event on a world scale. A unique combination of brine and oil, into which the animals had sunk, resulted in the near perfect preservation of woolly rhinoceros. In 2004, investigations in Starunia were restarted by Polish and Ukrainian scientists. This issue of Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae contains 18 papers which present the results of field and laboratory studies in the Starunia area completed by Polish scientists in the years 2006-2009. Interdisciplinary studies were realized by eleven thematic working groups on: Quaternary lithology and sedimentology, palaeobotany (palynology and analysis of macrofossils), botany (analysis of halophytes), palaeozoology (malacological analysis), radiocarbon dating, microbiology, surface and near-surface geochemistry, organic geochemistry (bitumen content and its fractions, biomarkers and stable carbon isotopes) and inorganic geochemistry (chloride ion analysis), geoelectric survey (DC resistivity soundings, electromagnetic terrain conductivity measurements, resistivity imaging, penetrometer-based resistivity profiling and azimuthal pole-dipole DC resistivity soundings) and microgravimetric survey. Results of these studies enabled recognition of the geological setting and sedimentary environment of Quaternary sediments, which hosted the Pleistocene fossils, and to determine the most favourable area of about 1,000 square metres for subsequent prospecting for extinct mammals within Pleistocene sediments in Starunia.
