Opis:
A rich assemblage of microfossils, including foraminifera, ostracodes and bolboforms (calcareous phytoplankton) have been found in the supra-evaporitic deposits of the Pecten Beds (Upper Badenian) and Krakowiec Clays (Sarmatian) of Middle-Miocene age, which occur in the Jamnica S-119 borehole near Tarnobrzeg, in the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep. Environmental conditions have been deduced from these microfossils. Comparison with other parts of the Carpathian Foredeep shows that microfauna distribution depended on location within the sedimentary basin and on hydrological conditions. Poorly-diversified and specific microfossils were associated with evaporites and overlying sediments (particularly within the lower Pecten Beds and Krakowiec Clays), indicating poorly-oxygenated near-bottom waters. Possibly, "Upper-Badenian" and "Sarmatian" biofacies had already differentiated by the end of the Badenian. Distribution of the Upper Badenian microfauna and bolboforms in the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep and beyond shows that there was faunal exchange between the eastern and western parts of the Polish section of the Carpathian Foredeep, and indicates connection between the Central Paratethys and Mediterranean basin areas.

Large exposure near the brick-field in Halie represents one of the most complete loess sequences in the Ukrainian Car- sq pathian F orcland, which i I lustrates a progress of events covering a considerable part of the Middle Pleistocene and the whole Upper Pleistocene. The most important of these arc: the Luck soil corresponding to the soil from the Zbójno lnicrglacial in Polish profiles and Dornnitz Interglacial (1~0 stage 9) in West European profiles, bottom part of the Upper Pleistocene (Dnieper= Odranian = Saalian I) loesses, which arc extremely thick and stratigraphically divided into units of lower rank. and well developed soil complexes - Korshov and Horok hov. Investigations of the Korshov soil arc a basis to discuss at least two stages/phases ofpedogcncsis development during the last but one interglacial (Lublinian = Trcenian: 1~0 stage 7). The Horokhov paleosol is connected with the Ecmian Interglacial. The Dubno and Rovno soils occur within the poorly developed Vistulian loesses: the Rovno soil is a cultural layer.

In this paper an attempt to estimate the influence of the relief on the selected physical soil properties from the edge zone of the Carpathian Foothills has been presented.Differentiation of water-air properties related to the location on the slope was evaluated. It results from, both, the main soil forming process-lessivage, erosion and accumulative changes in the morphology of the soil profile.Soils lessives situated on tops and slopes less prone to erosion are characterised by deeper eluvial horizons - luvic with a higher total porosity and water retention in comparison to illuvial horizons - argillic. Eroded lessivé soils occur on the slopes prone to erosion with the argillic horizon outeropped to the surface which determins their properties in the whole soil profile, first of all, their porosity is low and they have a limited capacity for water retention. Gley soils occur in the valley bottoms and synclines of slopes. They arc characterised by higher total porosity and retention in the whole profile in comparison to the lessivé soils.

Opis:
Analysis of microfossil distribution (foraminifera, ostracodes and bolboforms) in evaporite-bearing deposits from the Działoszyce Trough (northern Carpathian Foredeep) has allowed the distinction of three ecozones: the Globigerinoides ecozone (Lower Badenian), the Globigerina ecozone (Middle and Upper Badenian) including an evaporitic horizon, and the Anomalinoides dividens ecozone (Sarmatian). These ecozones are of ecostratigraphical significance and reflect major sea-level changes. The highest stands of sea-level correspond with the Globigerinoides ecozone and the upper part of the Globigerina ecozone, above the evaporites, and they are considered to relate to an influx of oceanic waters. Drastic climatic changes (cooling) and a sea-level fall that weakened bottom water circulation at the boundary between the Globigerinoides and Globigerina ecozones are considered the major factors which accounted for hypoxia (an oxygen-poor environment) that accompanied evaporitic deposition. The appearance of a specific ostracod assemblage (Xylocythere carpathica Szczechura and ?Microxestoleberis sp.) in Upper Badenian deposits is linked with the occurrence of active submarine hydrocarbon seepages.

In the latest Precambrian and Early Cambrian, turbidity currents and cohesive flows transported pebbles, sand and mud into a deep water in south-east Poland, this sediment probably being sourced from Gondwana. Abundant detrital albite grains suggest volcanism during sedimentation. Pebbles in conglomerate interbeds are polymict and include rock fragments showing greenschist facies regional metamorphism in the source area. The Precambrian surface in the marginal part of the Carpathians lies at 2000-5000 m b.s.l., whereas farther south, around Kuźmina it reaches 7000 m. Still farther south (Krosno-Sanok-Baligród) geophysical evidence suggests it lies at about 17-20 km depth.

Opis:
Structural analysis of the Miocene deposits of the northern marginal part of the Carpathian Foredeep, from the Nida Trough in the west to Tarnobrzeg in the east shows that three tectonic phases affected Neogene deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep: (1) an Early Styrian phase - Early Badenian synsedimentary movements, (2) a Moldavian phase (Late-Styrian) - Early/Late Badenian, after deposition of gypsum and during deposition of the lower part of the Pecten Beds, (3) an Attican phase - Sarmatian-Pliocene(?), after deposition of the Krakowiec Beds. The two Badenian phases involved reactivation of NW-SE basement faults Early-Styrian phase activity along these faults resulted in facies changes and thickness variability in the Baranów Beds. Reactivation of these faults during the Moldavian phase resulted in a considerable increase of their throws. Strata in the footwalls of faults were antithetically rotated to form structural traps for subsequent hydrocarbon and sulphur deposits. During the Attican phase, a horizontal compression stress field (compression direction - 30-50°) produced transverse and oblique faults (NE-SW and ENE-WSW) with strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. These faults were responsible for "pumping" hydrocarbons into the earlier formed traps. Minor deformations within gypsum deposits and seismotectonic features of the Witów Gravels are also discussed.

The Markov chains procedure was applied to the study on the sequences of lithofacies and depositional intervals in the Godula Beds (Turonian-Lower Senonian) of the Flysch Carpathians. The model (depositional) and modal (a most frequent in profile) diagrams were constructed and corresponding sequences were recognized. It was found that deposition from high-density turbidity currents of variable retardation rates was the dominating mechanism whereas the low-density turbidity currents were rather rare. The newly deposited sediments were commonly eroded by the succeeding, dense currents. Deposition processes were dominated by the two clearly separated environments: channels and depositional lobes. Their systems were subjected to frequent changes due to lateral migration caused by tectonic movements (uplift of cordilleras and subsidence of sea floor) and eustatic changes of sea level.

Seismic interpretations are normally made to help identify and locate structural and stratigraphic traps for oil. We focus on problems in interpreting seismic sections in sandy-shaly Miocene deposits which occur in the eastern part of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep. There, the structural picture yielded by the seismic section is not in good agreement with the known structure and a correct interpretation of the seismic wave field, based on seismic modelling, is needed to ensure proper location of exploratory and production wells. We show that the correct choice of petrophysical parameters in these deposits allows interpretation of the seismic image in terms of a multi-horizon gas body. A decrease in velocity, characteristic of gas-saturated beds, was not observed in velocity obtained from sonic measurements. Therefore, several versions of a seismogeological model were constructed based on the results of integrated log interpretation. A model using seismic wave velocity obtained from acoustic wave velocity and a quality factor Q, as a measure of attenuation of elastic waves, was of particular significance. In addition to the petrophysical parameters, the strata geometry necessary to construct a seismogeological model, was determined. Combining the interpreted geometry and information regarding depths of lithostratigraphic units an anticlinal structure was deduced in the gas-rich zone. A comparison of synthetic seismograms calculated using only sonic velocity and seismic velocity corrected for attenuation, with the recorded seismic traces, shows that the best agreement was obtained for a model which included the attenuation. Differences observed between the synthetic and field sections were a basis for determining local direct hydrocarbon indicators, which were then used to identify hydrocarbon deposits in the recorded seismic section.

Opis:
Within the Carpathian Foredeep, open marine basin evolved into restricted evaporitic basin during the Badenian (Serravallian), and along the Carpathian front chloride sub-basins developed. The studies of foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton were conducted to obtain new biostratigraphic data which could constrain the age and correlation of the salt deposits between Wieliczka-Bochnia in Poland, and Kalush in the Ukraine. These studies proved that chloride deposits (in the Ukrainian territory also potassium salts) originated generally during the same period corresponding to the Late Badenian NN6 zone and undivided NN6-NN7 zone. The uppermost part of sub-evaporitic beds belongs to the boundary between the NN5 and NN6 zones, although locally (Bochnia Salt Mine) only the NN6 zone was found. This suggests that the lower boundary of salt deposits can be diachronous. Deposits overlying the salt (Chodenice and lowermost part of Grabowiec beds - Bogucice Sands) represent the Late Badenian NN6/NN7 zone. The similarity in age between the folded Middle Miocene strata in Poland (Zgłobice Unit) and the Ukraine (Sambir Unit) implies that they were folded during the same time and that they can represent one tectonic unit, develo ped in front of the advancing Carpathian orogen.

The Czarny Dunajec is a typical river originating in high mountains (the Western Tatras). Over the entire Quaternary era the river laboured carrying material away from the Tatras and depositing it in the form of a typical braided channel at their foot. At the end of the 19'h century, river management projects and quarrying operations located directly in the very channel set off a rejuvenation process that was further accelerated at the end of 1960s. The activities resulted in the damaged several sections in their natural form and considerably deepened the channel. Measures taken to restrict the amount of material entering the Czorsztyn Dam have largely failed. From the geomorphologic and environmental points of view a continued transformation of the Czarny Dunajec river channel should be regarded as highly adverse.
