Opis:
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) possess unique properties rendering them a potentially useful biomaterial for neurobiological applications such as providing nanoscale contact-guidance cues for directing axon growth within peripheral nerve repair scaffolds. The in vitro biocompatibility of MWCNTs with postnatal mouse spinal sensory neurons was assessed for this application. Cell culture medium conditioned with MWCNTs was not significantly toxic to dissociated cultures of postnatal mouse dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons. However, exposure of DRG neurons to MWCNTs dispersed in culture medium resulted in a time- and dose-dependent reduction in neuronal viability. At 250 μgmL−1, dispersed MWCNTs caused significant euronal death and unusual neurite morphologies illustrated by immunofluorescent labelling of the cytoskeletal protein beta (III) tubulin, however, at a dose of 5 μgmL−1 MWCNTs were nontoxic over a 14-day period. DRG neurons grown on fabricated MWCNT substrates produced neurite outgrowths with abnormal morphologies that were significantly inferior in length to neurons grown on the control substrate laminin. This evidence demonstrates that to be utilized as a biomaterial in tissue scaffolds for nerve repair, MWCNTs will require robust surface modification to enhance biocompatibility and growth promoting properties.

We investigate the behaviour of a single-walled Carbon Nanotube under axial compressive line load applied at both edges. The expected buckling response is studied by application of a molecular computation model. We formulate a global potential and search for its minimum to obtain the equilibrium configuration. The critical nanotube diameter, when local shell buckling occurs, is measured with two parameters: the value of compression loading and tube diameter.

Opis:
In this study, the electrospray deposition (ESD) method was used to deposit carbon nanotubes (CNT) onto the surfaces of carbon fibers (CF) in order to produce hybrid carbon fiber-carbon nanotubes (CF-CNT) which is rarely reported in the past. Extreme high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (XHR-FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyse the hybrid carbon fiber-carbon nanotube (CF-CNT). The results demonstrated that CNT was successfully and homogenously distributed on the CF surface. Hybrid CF-CNT was then prepared and compared with CF without CNT deposition in terms of their tensile properties. Statistically, the tensile strength and the tensile modulus of the hybrid CF-CNT were increased by up to 3% and 25%, respectively, as compared to the CF without CNT deposition. The results indicated that the ESD method did not cause any reduction of tensile properties of hybrid CF-CNT. Based on this finding, it can be prominently identified some new and significant information of interest to researchers and industrialists working on CF based products.

Opis:
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have attracted huge attention due to their multifunctionality. Their unique properties allows for covalent and noncovalent modifi cations. The most simple method for functionalization of carbon nanotubes is their decoration with the oxygen containing moieties which can be further simultaneously functionalized for design of new class carriers for targeting and imaging. Here, we present methodology for chopping nanotubes, characterization of MWCNTs, the effect of size on the biocompatibility in culture of L929 mouse fi broblasts using WST-1, LDH and apoptosis assays. The analysis provides the optimal carbon nanotubes length and concentration which can be used for functionalization in order to minimize the effect of the secondary agglomeration when interacting with cells.

Opis:
Nanomaterials and nanotubes represent a relatively new area of science and industrial practice. The authors of the article suggest replacing the standard washcoat of the catalytic converter and using the nanotubes, which is expected to substantially increasethe contact surface of the catalytic layer with the exhaust gases. The article presents the problems in constructing the prototype catalytic converter as well as solving them and the construction of the converter. The constructed prototype oxidising catalytic converter was constructed by covering the standard ceramic core with cell density equal to 400 cpsi. The layer of nanotubes with an extended surface contact with exhaust gases was covered with platinum in a much lower amount than in a standard converter. The prototype converter was assembled in the exhaust systems of modern, turbo-charged diesel engines. The converter was subject to preliminary research on the engine test bed and in the road test NEDC. The research outcomes of conversion of the prototype converter confirm the possibility of applying nanotubes in the atmosphere of exhaust gases. They also indicate that if the existing problems were solved, the converters built according to the prototype converters could be used on an industrial scale. The most significant problems to be solved can be observed in covering the core with the nanotubes layer of an organised spatial structure. Moreover, it is essential to obtain such features of the, platinum cluster which enable to lower the light-off temperature. An analysis of benefits resulting from applying the described prototype converter and possible technical solutions aiming to reduce the observed technical problems are included in the summary of the article.

Opis:
The removal of benzene (B) and toluene (T) from aqueous solution by multi walled, single walled, and hybrid carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, SWCNTs, and HCNTs) was evaluated for a nanomaterial dose of 1 g/l, concentration of 10-100 mg/l, and pH 7. The equilibrium amount removed by SWCNTs (B: 9.98 mg/g and T: 9.96 mg/g) was higher than for MWCNTs and HCNTs. Toluene has a higher adsorption tendency on CNTs than benzene, which is related to the increasing water solubility and the decreasing molecular weight of the compounds. The SWCNTs performed better for B and T sorption than the MWCNTs and HCNTs. Isotherms study based on isofit program indicate that the Generalized Langmuir-Freundlich (GLF) isotherm expression provides the best fit for benzene sorption, and that Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm is the best fit for toluene adsorption by SWCNT. SWCNTs are efficient B and T adsorbents and possess good potential applications to water and wastewater treatment and maintain water of high quality that could be used for cleaning up environmental pollution.

In this study, Ni-CNT powders and colloids were synthesized via the Electrical explosion of wire (EEW) in different liquid conditions. The influence of ambient solvents (D.I. Water, ethanol, methanol, acetone and ethylene-glycol) on characteristics of the as-synthesized Ni-CNT was investigated. The morphology and size were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The Ni particles were spherical or near spherical shape. The phase of the composite powders analyzed via X-ray diffraction demonstrate the presence of CNTs in composite powders is not affect the structure of Ni. However, the phase of the composites was changed based on the changing of liquid conditions. Stability of colloids was investigated by Turbiscan technique. Magnetic properties were also investigated by Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature. The as-synthesized composite powders revealed a ferromagnetic characteristic material.

Opis:
Nanocomposite materials can be used in many application. In this study polymer–based nanocomposites modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and ceramic silica nanoparticles (nSiO2) were used. Size and shape of nanoparticles were observed using transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was shown that, this parameter changes during mixing of nanoparticles with solvent or polymer solution. Dispersion of nanoparticles depends on their chemical composition. The CNTs are more compatible with polymer (PLDL) than nSiO2. Nanoparticles influence rheological parameters of the polymer solution (increase of viscosity). Distribution of nanoparticles within the polymer matrix was determined using DLS method. Nanocomposites in the form of thin foils were used for mechanical tests which show that small amount of nanoparticles increases tensile strength (Rm) and Young’s modulus (E) of the material. The biological properties of the polymer-based nanocomposite materials like viability and proliferation were measured using osteoblast-like human cells MG63. Results of these investigations show that both types of the nanocomposites are suitable for promoting bone tissue for faster regeneration process.

Carbon nanotubes are one of the strongest materials of unique mechanical, optical, electrical and electronic properties. Because of that they are mainly used as semiconductor materials constituting the reinforcing phase in composite materials. The paper presents properties of polymer composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT) containing various mixtures of dispersion. Produced composites featured various content carbon nanotubes: 20%, 30%, 40% i 50%. Macroscopic observations were carried out on ready to check composites, if pores exist in the structure and whether the reinforcement has been distributed in the entire volume. Bending and compressive strengths tests were performed and densities of individual composites were measured to determine the specific strength. Composite materials strengthened with carbon nanotubes feature a very low density and a very good mechanical strength, which makes them a good structural material.

In this research, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are used as the reinforcement in an epoxy resin with weight percentages (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1)wt%, respectively, by using both direct (nonhomogeneous) and homogeneous dispersion mixing processes to prepare (epoxy/MWCNTs) nanocomposites. Tensile and drop weight impact tests are used to evaluate mechanical properties of the composites. Results show that homogeneous dispersion has a great effect on enhancing mechanical properties of multi-wall carbon nanotube reinforced composites. Adding 0.2 wt% of MWCNTs enhances and increases tensile properties, and adding 0.6 wt% of MWCNTs enhances impact properties.

Opis:
Variational formulation for multi-walled carbon nanotubes subject to buckling is derived by the semi-inverse method with governing equations based on the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory which takes small scale effects and shear deformation into account. The nonlocal theory improves the range and applicability of the physical model by modelling the nano-scale phenomenon more accurately. The natural and geometric boundary conditions are derived, which lead to a set of coupled boundary conditions for multi-walled nanotubes as opposed to uncoupled boundary conditions in the case of simply supported and clamped boundaries and also in the case of a local theory. The variational principle and the corresponding Rayleigh quotient facilitate the application of approximate and numerical methods of solution.
