In this explorative study, we investigate the relationship between dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities. Dynamic capabilities are at the core of strategic management in terms of how firms can ensure adaptation to changing environments over time. Our paper follows two paths of argumentation. First, we review and discuss some major contributions to the theories on ordinary capabilities, dynamic capabilities, and innovation capabilities. We seek to identify different understandings of the concepts in question, in order to clarify the distinctions and relationships between dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities. Second, we present a case study of the ’Innovation Clinic’ at a major university hospital, including four innovation projects. We use this case study to explore and discuss how dynamic capabilities can be extended, as well as to what extent innovation capabilities can be said to be dynamic. In our conclusion, we discuss the conditions for nurturing ‘dynamic innovation capabilities’ in organizations.

Purpose: The aim of this article is to present an identification of the premises for the classification of firm capabilities and to show the types of firm capability classification found in the literature. Design/methodology/approach: The classification of capability groups presented in this article is based on the literature review conducted. Findings: Standard classification of a firm's capabilities, in addition to structuring existing knowledge in the area of capabilities, can provide a starting point for identifying the firm's key capabilities leading to competitive advantage. Practical implications: Identifying a firm's capabilities is one of the key steps in creating and leveraging capabilities. The correct classification of a firm's capabilities can become a tool to help identify and then properly exploit them. Originality/value The literature describes the issue of firm capabilities, pointing to a variety of definitions, sources of origin, as well as the effects achieved through the use of capabilities, but does not show a standard classification of capabilities. The classification of firm capabilities provides a starting point for further research on firm capabilities for management researchers as well as firms seeking to achieve competitive advantage.

The aim of this article is to recognize the implications of various types of environmental dynamism for the effects of operational and dynamical capabilities. The research method used is the critical analysis of literature in the field of strategic management. The research findings in the literature, on the operational effects and dynamic capabilities in the context of environmental dynamism were properly structured in the article. There were controversial research findings on environmental dynamism and its determining of the effects of operational and dynamic capabilities. The results indicate that operational and dynamic capabilities have different performance effects in high-dynamic and low-dynamic environments. The discussion on operational effects and dynamic capabilities in different market conditions still requires better theorizing and empirical research on the implications of market dynamism. The recommendations of the managers are directed at the understanding of the nature of the environment, which is crucial for the success of the implementation of new practices in the company.

Botnets, the remotely controlled networks of computers with malicious aims, have significantly affected the international order from Ukraine to the United States in recent years. Disruptive software, such as malware, ransomware, and disruptive services, provided by those botnets has many specific effects and properties. Therefore, it is paramount to improve the defences against them. To tackle botnets more or less successfully, one should analyse their code, communication, kill chain, and similar technical properties. However, according to the Business Model for Information Security, besides technological attributes, there is also a human and organisational aspect to their capabilities and behaviour. This paper aims to identify the aspects of different attacks and present an analysis framework to identify botnets’ technological and human attributes. After researching the literature and evaluating our previous findings in this research project, we formed a unified framework for the human-organisational classification of botnets. We tested the defined framework on five botnet attacks, presenting them as case studies. The chosen botnets were ElectrumDoSMiner, Emotet, Gamover Zeus, Mirai, and VPNFilter. The focus of the comparison was motivation, the applied business model, willingness to cooperate, capabilities, and the attack source. For defending entities, reaching the target state of defending capabilities is impossible with a one-time development due to cyberspace’s dynamic behaviour and botnets. Therefore, one has to develop cyberdefence and conduct threat intelligence on botnets using such methodology as that presented in this paper. This framework comprises people and technological attributes according to the BMIS model, providing the defender with a standard way of classification.

Wyniki analiz wskazują na hybrydową konfigurację zdolności organizacyjnych.
The paper concerns the relevance of organizational capabilities in shaping the strategic potential of enterprises and the possibilities of its deployment. Some of strategic organizational capabilities are decisive for the enterprise’s ability to adapt to the changing conditions in its environment. From the cognitive and utilitarian point of view, these capabilities should co-exist to produce positive outcomes. Determining the configuration of a company’s strategic organizational capabilities is the aim of the study, which is a continuation of their analyses in the context of strategic agility. The results of the analyses suggest a hybrid configuration of organizational capabilities.

Przedsiębiorstwa stale poszukują sposobów tworzenia przewagi konkurencyjnej. Wśród czynników oddziałujących na tworzenie przewagi konkurencyjnej ważne miejsce zajmują potencjały sukcesu przedsiębiorstwa, które obejmują: (1) zasoby, (2) zdolności oraz (3) kompetencje. Z kolei, wśród różnorodnych zdolności przedsiębiorstwa, szczególne znaczenie przypisuje się tzw. dynamicznym zdolnościom. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie możliwości wykorzystania koncepcji dynamicznych zdolności w kształtowaniu i rozwoju kompetencji przedsiębiorstwa.
Firms are constantly looking for ways leading to the business competitive advantage creation. Among the factors affecting the business competitive advantage creation an important place is occupied by business success potentials, which include: (1) resources, (2) capabilities and (3) competences. In turn, among the different firm capabilities, the most important role is assigned to the so-called dynamic capabilities. The aim of the article is to present the possibilities of the dynamic capabilities concept exploitation in the process of business competences development.

Część referatu poświęcono definicji podstawowych pojęć związanych z Procesem planowania i programowania rozwoju zdolności SZ RP. Opracowany komponent programowy implementujący algorytm jest elementem składowym Modułu Wsparcia Procesu Planowania Zdolności, powstałym w Wydziale Cybernetyki WAT w ramach prowadzonych prac badawczo-rozwojowych.
The paper presents randomized algorithm for assessment of selected logistics capabilities. The main idea was discussed, including the scope of the input data and the way of algorithm parametrization. Part of the paper was devoted to definition of key concepts related to the Process of planning and programming development of Polish Armed Forces capabilities. Developed software component that implements the algorithm is a part of the Capabilities Planning Process Supported Module, created in the Cybernetics Faculty at Military University of Technology as part of performed R&D projects.

The aim of this study is to empirically examine the impact of supply chain dynamic capabilities on operational performance, and the mediating effect of technological innovation between dynamic capabilities and operational performance. This study is based on empirical data collected from a survey of 206 small- and medium-size firms in Korea. Structural equation modeling is used to test the research questions. The results show that supply chain dynamic capabilities positively influence technological innovation and operational performance of an enterprise. Additionally, structural equation analyses reveal that technological innovation plays a role as a partial mediator of the relationship between supply chain dynamic capabilities and operational performance. In a dynamic and ever-changing environment, the enforcement of dynamic capabilities in a sustainable supply chain is important for the innovation of technology and the improvement of operational performance. Further investigation is required to understand the differences by industries, characteristics of enterprises, and positions in a supply chain.

The contemporary world is full of threats. Their scale, variety and dynamics make single countries, especially those smaller and less wealthy, unable to prevent them. Also former leaders of world politics such as France and Great Britain find this harder and harder. That is why, among integrating European countries there appeared the idea of Common Security and Defence Policy. Its assumption was strenghtening cooperation in these spheres, coordination of positions or the creation of rapid reaction forces, which may lead to common defence. Bearing in mind the events happening just outside the EU (North Africa, Middle East, Ukraine) and inside the EU (Paris terrorist attacks in 2015) there is a question what assumptions have been accomplished? What can the EU do to protect its citizens? These are the issues the article deals with.

The issue of values is essential for Amartya Sen’s political philosophy, likewise for the early works of John Rawls. Considering the fundamental political value of social justice, Sen rejects the Rawlsian attitude because of the erroneous concept of human nature, adopted by him, which led him to a „blind” morality. He proposes a diff erent approach, referring to the notion of human capabilities on which his own theory of justice is based and he investigates it in the framework of political philosophy, which takes into account the qualitative dimension of human choices. Martha Nussbaum also builds her theory of justice on this notion, however, she derives it from the Aristotelian concept of man so that it takes on a deeper philosophical meaning. The aim of this paper is to compare and to assess both these concepts of justice, referring to human capabilities, as well as to shed some light on the new path of research in political philosophy opened by them.

Artykuł omawia transformację systemu logistycznego bułgarskiej armii począwszy od zmian w 1991 roku, przedstawiając historyczną analizę rozwoju tego systemu. Purpose: The aim of the research was to identify views regarding the capability of enterprises as expressed by members of their managerial staff. The research paid particular attention to the issue of "dynamism" of capabilities, that is, the capability itself and how to distinguish dynamic capabilities from non-dynamic capabilities. Design/methodology/approach: The research was carried out using the qualitative method, by collecting and analysing the written statements of management representatives from twenty- seven companies of various sizes and industries. Findings: The ability to distinguish oneself from the competition is a basic issue in the formation of the company's strategy. However, as demonstrated in the literature review, the newer theory of enterprise capability, which is dynamic capabilities, is not only constantly changing, but the background is still not clear enough to be a useful tool for management practitioners. These findings have led to the formulation of questions as to what extent and how management practitioners use theories about organisational capabilities? How do they understand this issue and how do they put it into practice? Thanks to empirical research, it is possible to answer these questions. Seven clear differences were identified between dynamic and non-dynamic capability portfolios that are closer in character to distinctive capabilities or core competence. These differences are the main components of two different ways of understanding the logic of an organisation's operation. Practical implications: Empirical research has identified the beliefs that limit the ability to perceive the role or capabilities of dynamic capabilities in practice. The research also suggests a possible scenario for the dynamisation of the capacity portfolio. Social implications: The results of the study highlight the role of the linguistic representation of knowledge in the field of management and its impact on the pro-innovation ("prodynamics") of managerial thinking. In this way, they refer to educational strategies aimed at the professionalisation of managerial staff. Originality/value: This study presents real ways of understanding the issue of the organisational capabilities of management practitioners. The results may be useful for practicing managers, specialists in the field of managerial education, as well as researchers exploring the issues of dynamic capabilities and organisational competences.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie możliwości implementacji koncepcji dynamicznych zdolności organizacji do obszaru zdolności interpersonalnych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pozycji zawodowej budowanej w środowisku akademickim. Artykuł ma charakter koncepcyjny, a podstawą przedstawionych koncepcji jest z jednej strony przegląd literatury poświęconej tzw. dynamicznym zdolnościom organizacji (dynamic capabilities), a z drugiej strony specyfika budowania zdolności na poziomie personalnym ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dynamicznych zdolności personalnych rozwijanych w środowisku akademickim. Wśród elementów składowych dynamicznych zdolności pracowników naukowych w artykule wskazano na trzy główne czynniki: zdolności networkingowe, zdolności językowe i międzykulturowe, a także zdolności radzenia sobie ze stresem zawodowym.
This paper aims at identifying how the dynamic capabilities view (DC) can be implemented in the area of personal capabilities with a special attention to the situation at universities. The paper is conceptual in nature and as the basis for conceptualisation it uses the literature review on DC, on the one side, and specific features of personal level capabilities at universities, on the other side. Among building blocks of dynamic capabilities developed by individual scholars the paper distinguishes three main ones, namely: networking capabilities, language and intercultural capabilities, and stress-handling capabilities.
Цель статьи – указать возможности внедрения концепции динамических способностей организации в область интерперсональных способностей, с особым учетом профессиональной позиции, создаваемой в академической среде. Статья имеет концептуальный характер, а основой представленных концепций является, с одной стороны, обзор литературы, посвященной так называемым динамическим способностям организации, с другой же – специфика формирования способностей на персональном уровне, с особым учетом динамических личных способностей, развиваемых в академической среде. В числе составных элементов динамических способностей научных работ- ников в статье указали три основных фактора: способности создавать сети, лингвистические и межкультурные способности, а также способности справляться с профессиональным стрессом.

In theoretical literature there is a great divergence among the definitions of the essence of poverty. It is usually identifi ed as a shortage of essential material means to survive, but this characterization is not sufficient to describe the phenomenon. The multifaceted criteria of measuring poverty, its forms and causes, make it difficult to find a common ground for understanding and effective solutions. What additionally comes into play are disputes concerning doctrine and type of government preferences, which often heat up the discussion instead of enabling a move closer to a well-structured solution that aids eradicating poverty. Amartya Sen establishes the concept of poverty as a failure of basic exchange entitlements. Deciding on this approach, he consistently references the idea of freedom as an unrestricted use of one’s capabilities to pursue desired goals. Poverty then is seen here as a lack of basic exchange entitlements, and not only as a matter of low income, which in turn poses a different problem not only for the economists, but also for the governing bodies, which are responsible for eliminating poverty (and hunger in particular) in the modern world. Sen therefore suggests shifting focus from a perspective centered around income to a perspective centered around capabilities, because the former one is a more precise way of defining the essence of poverty as a state in which some basic exchange entitlements become restricted, which can furthermore widen our field of research from a strictly economic to one to an ethical/anthropological standpoint, giving a clearer picture of the distinct character of poverty and the poor. Pursuing of one’s freedom becomes problematic in the context of poverty and particularly hunger, because in this situation human exchange entitlements are restricted, “handicapped” or fail completely. Amartya Sen’s proposal to expand the number of exchange entitlements, however justified and significant to a particular individual, turns out to be insufficient, because it seems that freedom ontologically extends beyond the category human exchange entitlements.
