Implementation in the Polish legal system of the amendment of the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction on 7 May 2022 allowed for a possibility of cultivating in Poland hemp other than fibrous for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The paper discusses the path that has led from the legalization of cannabis and its products to a gradual change of attitude both in international and national legislation. The aim of the study is also to familiarize the reader with the requirements the Polish legislator has placed on entities that intend to grow hemp other than fibrous for the production of pharmaceutical raw material.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to characterize the tourism activity of Polish cannabis consumers in terms of (i) the level of their participation in tourism, (ii) parameters describing this participation, (iii) the effect of legal access to cannabis on choosing tourism destinations. The study is based on an anonymous online survey in which 886 voluntary respondents answered a series of questions about their tourist travels, their attitude to cannabis consumption, and their demographic, socio-economic and geographic metrics. Results of the survey were analyzed using several statistical indicators of variability, structure, correlation, and structure similarity. For the respondents declaring cannabis consumption, the level of their participation in tourism is close to the national level. Other parameters describing the domestic and foreign tourism of these respondents differ quite significantly from those reported for the general public of Poland. This indicates that the possibility of cannabis consumption significantly affects the nature and directions of travels undertaken by tourists interested in cannabis. Furthermore, there is a strong connection between the respondents’ personal preferences and the nature of their tourism, especially the destinations of their foreign trips. The conclusions from this study mostly apply to current and recent cannabis consumers because the vast majority of respondents (90%) rank among such kinds of cannabis users.

Opis:
Nowadays medical use of marijuana is being brought up in public more often than in the recent years. The latest clinical trials confirm its healing effect on a human body in a fight against different kinds of diseases, which before its legalization were incurable or debilitating. In the world more and more countries legalize or quasi-legalize cannabis trade. The Polish legal system does not currently allow legalization of cannabis, however, the public opinion is voicing its approval for introducing legal, medical usage of marijuana, and public institutions agitate the government for regulation of this issue. Anti-drug communities speak only about negative consequences of using soft drugs. It is worth doing a balance of gains and losses and reanalyzing research to resolve the dilemma − is marijuana the pure evil or is it a real chance for effective treatment?

Introduction. Marijuana is one of the most widely used psychoactive substance. There is evidence of genetic predisposition for addiction. Objective. The aim of the study is to evaluate personality traits measured by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, combined with analysis of Tag1B rs1079597 and Tag1D rs1800498 located in the DRD2 gene. Materials and method. The study group consisted of 214 rural cannabinoid users and 301 controls. The same psychometric test and real-time PCR genotyping were performed in both studied groups. Results. The values of Anxiety state, Anxiety trait, NEO FFI: Neuroticism and Openness in the rural cannabis using group were significantly higher than in the control group. On the other hand, lower values were observed among rural people using cannabis compared to the control group for NEO FFI: Extraversion, Agreeability and Conscientiousness. In the Anxiety trait subscale, a 2% association with the polymorphism DRD2 Tag1B rs1079597 was detected in subjects using cannabis. However, for the DRD2 Tag1D rs1800498, there was no effect on the differences in personality traits between rural cannabis users and the control group. Conclusions. The study shows differences in personality traits between the cannabis using group and controls. Interaction between genetic factors and personality traits was also detected. The association showing the combination of psychological characteristics and genetic variants can bring us closer to the overall picture of the issue of marijuana addiction.

Opis:
On May 26, 2016, the police raided 43 cannabis dispensaries in Toronto, Canada, making 90 arrests. This article aims to describe the narrative of the responsible state agencies concerning the police raid and compare it to the narrative of those who opposed it, such as activists, as well as consumers and sellers of cannabis. While such concepts as moral entrepreneur, moral panic, and moral crusade have traditionally been used to study those in power, I will employ them to explore both the state narrative and ways in which counterclaims-makers resisted it. In order to do so, I will further develop the concept of moral entrepreneurship and its characteristics by relating it to studies of moral panics and social problems. This article will be guided by the following question: How did each party socially construct its cannabis narrative, and in what way can we use the concept of moral entrepreneurship to describe and analyze these narratives as social constructions? I have investigated the media coverage of the raid and ethnographically studied shops in Toronto in order to study the narratives. My findings show that both parties used a factual neutral style, as well as a dramatizing style. The later includes such typical crusading strategies as constructing victims and villains and presenting the image of a dystopian social world. In order to explain the use of these strategies, we will relate them to the shifting wider social and historical context and to the symbolic connotation of cannabis shops in Toronto in particular and in Canada as a whole.

The purpose of this study is an attempt to answer the following questions: (1) Is there a regional differentiation of cannabis consumers in Poland? (2) What is the scale of this differentiation? (3) What factors affect this differentiation? Our empirical study is based on the analysis of an anonymous online survey. The coefficient of variation, taxonomic measures of similarity, synthetic index and Spearman correlation coefficient are used in the analysis. It is observed that cannabis consumption in Poland is most popular among men, youth and young adults (Generation Y), as well as among those who are well-educated, relatively well-off and live in cities. The structure of selected demographic and socio-economic features of the respondents is poorly differentiated regionally. Regional differentiation in the structure of cannabis consumption frequency is at an average level. The spatial distribution of features characterizing the respondents is highly consistent with the spatial distribution of city dwellers aged 15–44, their sex and 5-year age ranges, the level of education, the size of cities and the level of gross domestic product.

Opis:
When examining the constitutionality of the contested Article 62 para. 1 and Article 63 para. 1 of the Preventing Drug Addiction Act, the author assumed that those provisions do not directly interfere with the freedom of religious practice. Therefore, such provisions to the extent that they relate to cannabis other than fiber hemp, are not incompatible with Article 53 para. 1 and para. 2 of the Constitution. It was also considered that the contested provisions do not apply to the medical use of narcotic drugs and can not be assessed in the context of Article 68 of the Constitution. Moreover, it was noted that the objectives of the prohibitions set forth in the challenged provisions can be considered justified by the guarantee of healthcare derived from the Constitution, indicating the usefulness of the contested regulation because of the general requirements of prevention and the duty of adequate protection of constitutional values. It is also claimed that restriction of access to medicinal products cannot be regarded as inconsistent with the prohibition of degrading treatment, which means that the above mentioned provisions are in conformity with Article 40 of the Constitution.

Media coverage of everyday life problems of suffering people is increasing. Cannabis for medical use is a subject of various disputes around which numerous understatements are formed. Proponents of legalization emphasize the healing properties of cannabis, while opponents fear the harmful effects of this substance, arguing that its use leads to addiction. The aim of the paper is to present juridical and social aspects related to the legalization of cannabis for medical use in Poland. On the basis of the new regulations, cannabis has been admitted in some forms to legal trading. The therapeutic properties of cannabis are confirmed by scientific research. Conducting further research will enable a better understanding of the therapeutic properties and a wider use of this substance in medicine to cure various diseases. In view of the fact that the basic thematic assumptions of the present study concern the problems that emerged after the amendment of the anti-drug legislation, the research findings in this area are far from exhaustive.

Cannabis is the most popular illicit drug on the European market. Over 16 million young Europeans have used it at least once in the last few years. The recent trends in the consumption of marihuana differ between countries. Some countries face an increase in the prevalence of cannabis use, including Poland, where the level cannabis use has been systematically increasing since the 1990’s. According to a recent ESPAD study, 19% of Polish adolescents aged 15–16 have used cannabis in the last year. Marihuana is also a leading substance when analyzing the data of seizures and crimes. The recent EMCDDA Annual report on the drug situation in Europe notes the increasing potency in cannabis available on the market. Some countries face an increasing number of emergencies caused by marihuana, which was unlikely to have happened previously. In almost all European countries there is an ongoing discussion about loosening marijuana laws or its complete legalization. There is also ongoing discussion on the use of marihuana in therapy as a medicine. Many scientific studies are being conducted in this field. Some of the results are promising; however, there is no well-designed human trial which would unequivocally confirm that medical cannabis is effective as a medicine, or more effective than other medicines on the market. The problem is that the debate on the medical use of marihuana becomes more ideological and less professional. The medical use of marihuana is strongly supported by organizations lobbying for the legalization of cannabis use. Research on the medical use of cannabis should be continued, as there are some promising results supporting therapy in different medical conditions. However, the use of cannabis as a medicine should be discussed only among professionals. If marihuana is to be used for medical purposes, the fact that it is the most popular illicit drug in Europe is irrelevant.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. Substance abuse and its associated problems are a global concern. Young adults, particularly college-going students, remain among the highest at-risk groups for various substance use disorders. So, this study was conducted to find out the prevalence of substance use and its correlates among undergraduate (UG) university students. Material and methods. We did an online cross-sectional survey among 1003 undergraduate university students across India using a pre-structured, self-reported questionnaire consisting of basic demographic details, standard tool (WHO-ASSIST), and the results were tabulated. A multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was performed to find out the correlates of substance use and Pearson correlation to find a correlation between ASSIST scores. Significance was attributed to a p-value <0.05. Results. A total of 320 (31.9%), 167 (16.7%), and 125 (12.5%) among 1003 students used alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis respectively. 70 (21.9%), 116 (69.5%), and 62 (49.6%) were at moderate-high risk of abuse for alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis respectively. There was a strong positive statistically significant (p<0.001) correlation between all three substance-specific scores (Pearson’s Coefficients r = 0.643, 0.763, and 0.725 respectively). Conclusion. One, two, and three out of every ten students used cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol respectively. Many of them fall into the moderate-high risk category. The data suggest that a student at high risk for any one substance is also at a higher risk of using another substance as well. This calls for an integrated ‘bundle’ approach to focus on all substances together as one unit.

Opis:
An acidic α-galactosidase designated as hemp seed α-galactosidase (HSG) was purified from hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seeds. By means of chromatographic procedures which involved chromatography on the cation-exchangers CM-cellulose and SP-Sepharose, chromatography on the anion-exchangers DEAE-cellulose and Q-Sepharose, and gel filtration on Superdex 75 using fast protein liquid chromatography, HSG was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity. Results of SDS-PAGE and gel filtration on FPLC Superdex 75 revealed that the enzyme was a monomeric protein with a molecular weight of 38 kDa. Sequences of the inner peptides of the α-galactosidase obtained by MALDI-TOF-MS showed that HSG was a novel α-galactosidase since there was a little similarity to the majority of α-galactosidases recorded in the literature. A pH of 3.0 and a temperature of 50°C were optimal for the activity of the enzyme. The activity of HSG was inhibited by the chemical modification with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) reagent. HSG contained 16 tryptophan residues and two tryptophan residues on the surface, which were crucial to the α-galactosidase activity. The heavy metal ions Cd2+, Cu2+, Hg2+ and Zn2+ inhibited its activity. The Km and Vmax for the hydrolysis of pNPGal (4-nitrophenyl α-D-galactopyranoside) were respectively 0.008 mM and 68 μM min-1 mg-1. HSG also catalyzed the hydrolysis of raffinose and other natural substrates. Hence the α-galactosidase possesses a tremendous potential for food and feed industries in the elimination of indigestible oligosaccharides from leguminous products.
