The magnetic polarities of the upper Upper Campanian–Lower Maastrichtian interval of the Middle Vistula River composite section (central Poland), were studied. Sixty-six hand-oriented samples for palaeomagnetic studies were taken from the sections of Raj, Raj North, Podole, Kłudzie and Dziurków. The inter-correlation between them is based primarily on bio-events. The sampled rocks generally revealed a very weak magnetic signal, however quite reliable results were obtained. The whole interval studied, well constrained biostratigraphically, is referred to magnetostratigraphic chron C32n. The Campanian–Maastrichtian boundary, placed biostratigraphically in the upper part of the ‘Inoceramus’ redbirdensis inoceramid Zone, is located near the top of the C32n2n Subchron. Thin reversed polarity intervals in the rocks correlated with the C32n2n chron most probably result from their partial remagnetization (maghemitization).

This taxonomy and stratigraphy of the Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian Belemnitella lineages, from the Middle Vistula sections, based on new collections, is presented. The correlation to the basal Maastrichtian standard GSSP at Tercis, France, is provided based on inoceramid bivalve stratigraphy. The Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), particularly the self-organizing Kohonen algorithm, was applied to taxonomic discrimination. Eight morphotypes within the genus Belemnitella, understood here as natural species populations, were recognised. Five of these are assigned to known taxa: Belemnitella mucronata, B. posterior, B. minor [= B. minor I and B. minor II], B. langei and B. najdini; and three, B. sp. a, B. sp. 1 and B. sp. 2, are left in open nomenclature. Four Belemnitella zones are proposed. Due to its palaeogeographic position, between Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle Vistula section is characterized by the co-occurrence of Belemnitella species from those two areas. Consequently, it enables better correlation of Belemnitella-based schemes; the East European B. najdini and B. posterior are placed next to West European B. minor chronospecies I and II. The Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary, as currently defined, is placed at the top of the najdini – posterior Zone, which is an equivalent of the Belemnella-based boundary, i.e. at the base of the Belemnella obtusa / Belemnella vistulensis zones. Within the top of the najdini – posterior Zone occurs a level (an interval of only a few metres), where nearly all of the Upper Campanian Belemnitella disappear. This level coincides with taxonomic changes observed within the co-occurring representatives of genus Belemnella.

The neopterygian fish Enchodus was a widespread, speciose genus consisting of approximately 30 recognized species that were temporally distributed from the late Early Cretaceous through the Paleocene. Many Enchodus specimens are fragmentary cranial remains or isolated dental elements, as is the case for previously reported occurrences in Egypt. Here, we present the most complete specimen of Enchodus recovered from the Late Cretaceous of northeast Africa. The specimen was collected from the upper Campanian Duwi Formation, near the village of Tineida (Dakhla Oasis, Western Desert, Egypt). The new species, Enchodus tineidae sp. nov., consists of right and left dentaries, a partial ectopterygoid, and other cranial bones. The size of the specimen places it into the upper body-size range for the genus. The palatine tooth, an element often useful for diagnosing Enchodus to the species level, is not preserved, but a combination of other cranial characters supports the referral of this specimen to Enchodus. In particular, the dentary preserves three symphysial rostroventral prongs and two tooth rows, the lateral of which consists of small denticles, whereas the medial row comprises large, mediolaterally-compressed teeth. The rostral-most tooth exhibits the highest crown, whereas the rest of the teeth are of lower, variable crown heights. The eight robust, caudal-most medial-row teeth are distributed in a cluster pattern never before observed in Enchodus. Additionally, the dentary and preopercle are both without dermal ornamentation, and the mandibular sensory canal is closed. Phylogenetic analysis recovers this new species as the sister species to E. dirus from North America. Along with previously described materials from Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Italy, Morocco, and Libya, this specimen represents a thirteenth species from the northwestern Tethyan geographic distribution of Enchodus.

Upper Cretaceous to lower Palaeogene carbonate and siliciclastic deposits that crop out widely in the Haymana and Polatlı districts (Ankara Province) of the Haymana Basin (Central Anatolia) are rich in larger benthic foraminifera, various macrofossils and ichnofossils. The ichnofossils of the Haymana and Yeşilyurt formations were studied at five localities. The Upper Cretaceous siliciclastics of the Haymana Formation contain moderately diverse trace fossils, belonging to the deep-sea Nereites ichnofacies. The Paleocene siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of the Yeşilyurt Formation comprise similar trace fossils, which do not show significant changes in comparison to the Haymana Formation. This indicates that the K-Pg boundary extinction event did not affect the ichnofauna with any longer consequences. The Upper Cretaceous coarser, siliciclastic deposits of the Haymana and Beyobası formations are rich in shallow-marine, larger benthic foraminifera, including species of Orbitoides, Omphalocyclus, Siderolites, Hellenocyclina, and Loftusia, whereas fine siliciclastic deposits contain abundant planktonic, open-marine foraminifera, such as Globotruncana and Heterohelix. Palaeogene siliciclastic to carbonate deposits of the Kartal, Yeşilyurt and Çaldağ formations are rich in the larger, benthic foraminifera Nummulites, Discocyclina, Assilina and Alveolina. The larger foraminifers have been redeposited from nearby, shallow-marine parts of the basin.

Opis:
The lithological characteristics and age analysis of the variegated Farony Shale are presented for the first time. The Farony Shale occurs in the Lubomierz and Rabka areas in the Bystrica Subunit. It is located within medium- and thin-bedded sandy dominated turbidites of the Campanian–Paleocene Ropianka Formation. It is comprised of red shales laminated or interlayered with strongly bioturbated green shales. Exposures of the Farony Shale are observed along a distance of ~25 km, in the form of a narrow belt. The age of the variegated deposits is estimated based on agglutinated foraminifera to late Campanian–earliest Maastrichtian. Their deposition was associated with low-energy conditions and a temporary limitation of the supply of sandy material to the inner part of the Magura Basin.

We sectioned a permineralized stem preserved in marine calcareous concretions from the Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) of James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula using the cellulose-acetate peel technique. The material is a slender stem displaying a combination of characters such as: (i) absence of vessels and axial parenchyma, (ii) presence of a cambial variant which produces axial vascular elements in segments (AVES pattern), and (iii) elongated upright ray cells. This character combination allows us to assign this fossil to family Chloranthaceae and to relate it to an extant genus Sarcandra. Consequently we describe Sarcandraxylon sanjosense gen. et sp. nov., representing the first vegetative fossil of Chloranthaceae—a basal angiosperm family with a fossil record extending back into the Early Cretaceous and dominated by pollen grains and a limited number of reproductive mesofossils. Besides doubtfully assigned leaves, there are no reported Cretaceous macrofossils of Chloranthaceae, which hinders our understanding of the overall pattern of morphological evolution for the family. The new fossil constitutes the first fossil occurrence of the Sarcandra clade in high latitudes of Western Gondwana. The particular wood anatomy and small diameter suggest a new plant habit (subshrub) for the physiognomy of the Cretaceous Antarctic floras.

A 250-m-thick sedimentary succession dominated by siliciclastic deposits occurs in the Kąkolówka Structure of the Skole Nappe. The succession was deposited in the inner part of the Skole Basin during the Late Cretaceous. In position and age, it corresponds to the Kropivnik Fucoid Marl of the Wiar Member (a subdivision of the Ropianka Formation), which was comprehensively described in the external part of the Skole Nappe. In this study, the authors provide the first complete data set on the lithological development and biostratigraphy of the Kropivnik Fucoid Marl from the inner part of the Skole Nappe. The results are compared to previous data from the outer part of the Skole Nappe. In the Kropivnik Fucoid Marl of the Kąkolówka Structure, three main heterolithic facies associations are distinguished: shale-sandstone, marl-sandstone and sandstone-shale. The occurrences of hard, platy and soft marls within siliciclastic rocks are typical of the sections studied. The features observed indicate a turbiditic origin of the deposits studied, including the hard, platy marls. The allogenic material of the strata described includes the small, fragile tests of planktonic foraminifera, which were redeposited from the outer parts of the Skole Basin. Particularly large concentrations of planktonic foraminifera were observed in the hard, platy marls. They are less common in the soft marls and shales. In the Zimny Dział section, a diverse assemblage of benthic and planktonic foraminifera was found. The Kropivnik Fucoid Marl was dated as uppermost Campanian to lowermost Maastrichtian on the basis of planktonic foraminifera, which represent the Gansserina gansseri Zone. The agglutinated foraminiferal assemblages are representative for the lower part of the Rzehakina inclusa Zone and the co-occurrence of the Caudammina gigantea (Geroch) acme with Rzehakina inclusa (Grzybowski) was observed.

A new cephalopod collection from the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary interval of NE Mexico, consisting of 1076 individuals assigned to 29 species and 22 genera is presented. This collection is a mix of ammonoids, one coleoid and one nautilid, which originate from at least three ammonoid biozones: The upper Campanian Exiteloceras jenneyi and Nostoceras (Nostoceras) hyatti zones, and the lower Maastrichtian Pachydiscus (Pachydiscus) neubergicus Zone. The age of the collection is thus middle late Campanian to late early Maastrichtian, and it closes a stratigraphic gap between faunas described formerly from this region. The specimens are nuclei collected from the desert pavement. The abundance of specimens allows for a comparison to other Campanian-Maastrichtian ammonoid records from Mexico, North America and Europe.

The taxonomy and stratigraphy of the Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian belemnites from the Vistula (central Poland) and Kronsmoor (northern Germany) sections are revised on the basis of new collections from the Vistula section as well as a reinvestigation of the classic collection of Schulz from the Kronsmoor section. For the taxonomic description a new biometric procedure is proposed, which can be applied to both the genera Belemnella and Belemnitella. For the species-level taxa recognition the Artificial Neural Networks method, the self-organizing Kohonen algorithm, was implemented. This new taxonomic and methodological approach enabled the recognition of nine species of the genus Belemnella. Five of them can be assigned to the existing species B. lanceolata, B. longissima, B. inflata, B. obtusa and B. vistulensis. However, the species concept differs from that applied by Schulz (1979). As a consequence, the stratigraphic ranges of these species are modified. Four species are left in open nomenclature and represent possibly new species. Future studies may reveal that they might be assigned to East European forms from Ukraine or Russia. The species of Belemnella recognized are placed into the stratigraphic framework based on the standard ammonite and inoceramid bivalve zonations, especially those recognized in the Vistula section. The newly proposed belemnite zonation for the Vistula and Kronsmoor sections is correlated via inoceramids with the standard GSSP at Tercis, France, in order to identify the base of the Maastrichtian Stage. The Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary as defined in Tercis is placed here at the base of the newly defined B. obtusa and B. vistulensis Zones ["obtusa/vistulensis"] - thus it is markedly higher than the traditional boundary based on the FAD of representatives of the genus Belemnella - This new boundary coincides well with a distinct turnover of belemnite guard morphology and represents one of the most important points in the early evolutionary history of Belemnella. Three belemnite zones defined by their lower boundaries are recognized in the Campanian/Maastrichtian interval, in addition to three subzones recognized within the B. obtusa Superzone. The B. lanceolata and B. inflata zones as understood here are referred to the Upper Campanian [Tercis definition]. The B. obtusa Zone is subdivided into three subzones, viz.: Belemenlla vistulensis, Belemnella sp. G and Belemnella sp. F, which are referred to the Lower Maastrichtian [Tercis definition]. The fast evolving species of Belemnella enable the proposal of a biostratigraphic scheme with a resolution that is higher than those based on inoceramid bivalves and ammonites - the longevity of a belemnite zone could be as low as 200Ky.

The upper Campanian (Cretaceous) of the Hacımehmet area (south of the city of Trabzon; Eastern Pontides) is mainly composed of calciclastic turbidites. The basinal unit of the 119 m thick succession includes thin red pelagic limestone interlayers and conglomerates dominated by volcanic clasts. The overlying upper slope and lower slope units of the sequence consist of an alternation of allochthonous calcarenite/calcirudite beds and pelagic marls and mudstones. Calcarenite/calcirudite beds dominate the upper slope unit of the succession and are composed of transported material, including benthic foraminifers, red algae, bryozoan, crinoid and rudist fragments, inoceramid bivalve prisms and neritic and pelagic carbonate lithoclasts. The occurrence of Helicorbitoides boluensis (Sirel) extracted from the calcarenite/calcirudite beds indicates a Campanian age. Identifiable rudists such as Joufia reticulata Boehm, Bournonia cf. anatolica Özer, Biradiolites cf. bulgaricus Pamouktchiev and ?Biradiolites sp. from the upper slope unit of the succession indicate a late Campanian–Maastrichtian age. The planktonic foraminifers within the red pelagic limestone beds, marls and mudstones throughout the succession consist mainly of Campanian–Maastrichtian forms and suggest mainly basinal depositional conditions. The presence of Radotruncana cf. calcarata (Cushman) accompanied by Globotruncanita elevata (Brotzen) in the basinal unit of the succession indicates an early late Campanian age for the lower part of the succession. Inoceramid bivalves have been collected from the upper part of the succession. The fauna is dominated by ‘Inoceramus’ tenuilineatus Hall and Meek, 1854 and Cataceramus haldemensis (Giers, 1964); other taxa recognised are: ‘Inoceramus’ algeriensis Heinz, 1932, Platyceramus vanuxemi (Meek and Hayden, 1860), ‘Inoceramus’ cf. nebrascensis Owen, 1852, Cataceramus aff. barabini (Morton, 1834), Cataceramus gandjaensis (Aliev, 1956), and ‘Inoceramus’ sp.; the assemblage indicates the ‘Inoceramus’ tenuilineatus Zone; corresponding to the middle–late Campanian boundary interval. The uppermost part of the succession is characterized by the presence of the trace fossils Scolicia strozzii and Scolicia isp., indicating a mixed Skolithos-Cruziana ichnofacies. This ichnofacies suggests a well-oxygenated environment.

A re-examination of heteromorph ammonites of late Campanian age from the Zeltberg section at Lüneburg has demonstrated that the type series of Hamites wernickei in fact comprises two different species that are here assigned to the nostoceratid Nostoceras Hyatt, 1894 and the polyptychoceratid Oxybeloceras Hyatt, 1900. Nostoceras (Didymoceras) wernickei (Wollemann, 1902) comb. nov., to which three of the four specimens that were described and illustrated by Wollemann (1902) belong, has irregularities of ribbing and tuberculation and changes its direction of growth at the transition from the helicoidal whorls to the hook, which is a typical feature of members of the subfamily Nostoceratinae. Torsion of body chambers is not developed in hairpin-shaped ammonite species, which means that the species name wernickei is no longer available for such polyptychoceratine diplomoceratids. Consequently, the fourth specimen figured and assigned to Hamites wernickei by Wollemann (1902) is here transferred to Oxybeloceras and considered conspecific to material from the Hannover area (Lehrte West Syncline) as O. aff. crassum (Whitfield, 1877). In addition to the "Heteroceras-Schicht des Mucronaten-Senons" of Lüneburg (bipunctatum /roemeri Zone, upper upper Campanian), the geographic range of N. (D.) wernickei probably includes Upper Austria, Tunisia and the Donbass region, while O. aff. crassum is known from the Hannover area (northern Germany), southern France, northern Spain and Upper Austria.

The topmost part of the Oxfordian limestones, building the Zakrzówek Horst in Kraków, is featured by a network of minute fissures, filled with Upper Cretaceous limestones. Fissures are dominantly subhorizontal, anastomosing and polygonal in plane. They are filled with white limestones representing mostly foraminiferal- calcisphere wackestones, with subordinate amount of quartz pebbles and fragments of stromatolite coming from the latest Turonian-?Early Coniacian conglomerate overlying Oxfordian basement. The fissures are seismically- induced injection dykes. In contrast to gravitationally-filled neptunian dykes the recognised injection dykes were filled by overpressured soft sediments. Foraminifera within some dykes are abundant, and dominated by planktonic forms, which indicate the Early/Late Campanian age (Globotruncana ventricosa and Globotruncanita calcarata zones) of the filling, and hence date also the synsedimentary tectonics. Abundant and diversified keeled globo- truncanids in the Campanian of the Kraków region are recognised for the first time. Other important findings at the studied section include karstic cavities featuring the surface of the Oxfordian bedrock filled with conglomerates of the latest Turonian-?Early Coniacian age based on foraminifera and nannoplankton, and lack of Santonian deposits, which elsewhere are common in the Upper Cretaceous sequences in the Kraków region. The discovered Campanian dykes provide new evidence for the Late Cretaceous tectonic activity on the Kraków Swell related to the Subhercynian tectonism, which resulted among others in stratigraphic hiatuses and unconformities characte- ristic of the Turonian-Santonian interval of this area.

Opis:
Palynological investigation of the Vrabchov dol locality (Western Bulgaria) which recently yielded fragmentary dinosaur bones attributed to the clade Titanosauria, reveals well-preserved sporomorph assemblages dominated by angiosperm pollen from the Normapolles group, spores and rare gymnosperms. The age assessment of the studied sequence is based on the diagnostic Normapolles species, such as Oculopollis orbicularis Góczán, 1964, Oculopollis zaklinskaiae Góczán, 1964, Krutzschipollis spatiosus Góczán in Góczán et al., 1967 and Krutzschipollis crassus (Góczán, 1964) Góczán in Góczán et al., 1967. The concurrent presence of these pollen species suggests a late Santonian–early Campanian age for the succession. The sporomorph association is encountered in a palynofacies dominated by continental elements, including translucent phytoclasts (tissues, wood remains and plant cuticles). The sedimentary succession shows no evidence of marine elements and a very low proportion of AOM that attests to deposition within a lagoonal to foreshore marine environment, with high continental input and short transportation. The vegetation in the studied area was primarily composed of a range of Normapolles-producing angiosperms and secondarily of pteridophyte spore-producing plants. Gymnosperms were rare. Such a vegetation pattern reflects a warm, seasonally dry climate during the late Santonian–earliest Campanian in the studied area. The dinosaurs inhabited a wet lowland area, probably rich in herbaceous plants.

The first formally described spider from mid−Campanian (76.5–79.5 Ma), Upper Cretaceous amber from Cedar Lake, Manitoba, Canada is named as Grandoculus chemahawinensis new genus and species. It belongs in the fossil family Lagonomegopidae, based on the large eyes situated anterolaterally on the carapace. The proposed systematic position of this family in Palpimanoidea was based on tenuous characters, such as spineless legs and a single metatarsal trichobothrium. The new fossil possesses dense scopulae prolaterally on the metatarsus and tarsus of the first pair of legs, confirming placement of the Lagonomegopidae in Palpimanoidea along with the only other known families to exhibit this character. However, the individual setae differ between the new specimen and the other families, in that they have a pointed, hooked−tip on the metatarsus and a straight, pointed tip on the tarsus, rather than a spatulate tip. Both hooked and spatulate setal types presumably evolved from a “normal−type” seta and may represent two different lineages derived from a common ancestor.

The Upper Campanian–Lower Maastrichtian interval of the Middle Vistula River Valley section records the following benthic foraminiferal bioevents in ascending stratigraphical order: LO of Globorotalites michelinianus, FO and LO of Globorotalites emdyensis (=G. hiltermanni), FO of Bolivina incrassata, FO of Bolivinoides miliaris, FO of Angulogavelinella gracilis (=A. bettenstaedti), LO of Gavelinella monterelensis, FO of Osangularia navarroana, FO of Bolivina decurrens and FO of Neoflabellina reticulata. These events are recorded in very similar stratigraphic positions in the Lägerdorf-Kronsmoor succession (northern Germany) and in the succession of eastern England and, at least some of them, in eastern Europe. Accordingly they can serve as important markers for stratigraphic correlation across Europe. The FOs of the planktonic species, Rugoglobigerina milamensis, R. hexacamerata and R. pennyi, in the uppermost part of the “Inoceramus” redbirdensis Zone,are very close to the Campanian–Maastrichtian boundary as defined by inoceramid bivalves (Walaszczyk, 2004) and we propose these planktonic foraminiferal bioevents as a good proxy for this boundary in temperate regions.
