Opis:
This study was aimed at studying the potential of biogas (methane) production from vinasse wastewater in real full-scale application using a two-stage sequencing Up-flow High Rate Anaerobic Reactor (UHRAR), with effluent recirculation and substrate modification. A batch experiment was initially conducted prior to the full-scale application experiment. The batch experiment was done with experimental condition variable: undiluted sample (pH 6) and diluted samples (pH: 5; 6 and 7), while pH and methane production were observed for 50 days. Full-scale application was carried out in two-stage UHRAR reactors with volume 60 m3, HRT 40 d and OLR 60.1–104 kg COD/m3•d. The observation lasted for 32 d. The result from the batch experiment showed that the diluted samples achieved higher COD degradation and methane generation than the undiluted sample. The optimum condition occurred at pH 7, with theoretical methane yield of 7.5–10.64 L CH4 per kg COD. In turn, in full scale application, at day 32, COD removal was 71% (69.1 kg COD/d removed), with methane production was 36.72 m3 CH4/d. Methane production per COD removed was 0.53 m3 CH4/kg COD•d. Substrate modification and effluent recirculation could improve the substrate biodegradability, maintain microbial diversity and enrich nutrients in the reactor.

Opis:
Over the previous few decades, there has been a noticeable increase in interest in the use of vegetable fibers and supplemental cementitious elements in mortar and concrete. The date palm frond was utilized in this study to create date palm fibers (DPF), which were then added to the cement mortar at percentages of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by cement weight. There were two types of DPFs used: one type was untreated, and the other had a mechanical treatment that created holes before applying a layer of polychloroprene (neoprene) on the surface. Metakaolin (MK) and nano calcium carbonate (nano-CaCo3) were added to the cement mortar by the weight of cement. MK was replaced by 10% of the weight of cement. Besides, the nano-CaCo3 was replaced by 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% of the weight of cement. Mechanical tests for flowability, compressive strength, and flexural strength were conducted. In addition, one MCDM methodology called VIKOR is utilized to choose the best combination out of several combinations and criteria. The results indicate that a higher DPF concentration enhances both compressive and flexural strength. The mixtures with the DPF coating and mechanical treatment give the strongest and most significant results. In addition, the flowability of cement mortar decreases when the DPF concentration increases. In addition to the high content of nano-CaCo3 in cement mortar, given the grater reading of strength, the presence of nano- CaCo3 in cement mortar reduces the disparity in result values that have a higher DPF content. The mixtures containing 4% and 5% DPF and 3% and 4% nano-CaCo3 are the optimal ones, according to the VIKOR technique.

Opis:
In order to effectively eliminate the effect of fine carbonate minerals on quartz flotation, the influence of fine siderite on quartz flotation was studied as well as the mechanism or role of ultrasonic treatment in the process. The results of adsorption capacity measurement and flotation solution chemical calculation show that fine siderite and its dissolved components have a great influence on the collector consumption and the surface properties of quartz. In addition, SEM, EDS and XPS analysis were used to study the surface morphology and chemical environment changes of quartz with and without ultrasonic treatment. The results of flotation test show that the recovery of quartz increase from 38.79% to 58.38% under the condition that ultrasonic time was 0.5 min and ultrasonic power was200 W. The mechanical effect caused by ultrasonic cavitation can clean the quartz surface to a certain extent and increase its active sites, thus improving the floatability of quartz.

Opis:
W obszarach tych wytrącany CaCO3 spełnia rolę czynnika remediacyjnego i cementującego, na przykład w celu (1) oczyszczania wód z jonów metali toksycznych i radionuklidów, (2) wzmacniania i konsolidacji gruntu i piasku, (3) uszczelniania formacji geologicznych, (4) naprawy obiektów budowlanych i (5) ochrony powierzchni tych obiektów warstwami ochronnymi. Choć stosowana z powodzeniem w sektorze ochrony i restauracji budowli historycznych, technika ta pozostaje ciągle na etapie badań i procesów optymalizacyjnych.
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a substance widespread in nature and used in numerous practical applications. In nature, its biomineralization relies, among others, on microbiologically induced precipitation processes. One of such processes is precipitation induced by ureolytic bacteria. If performed in a biomimetic manner, the process is carried out under mild conditions and, most importantly, can be employed in field applications in situ. Therefore, the process constitutes an eco-friendly and energy-saving technique to be used as an ecological alternative to conventional techniques in a variety of engineering fields. In these fields, CaCO3 serves as a remediating and cementing agent, for instance to (1) clean waste- and groundwater from toxic metals and radionuclides, (2) strengthen and consolidate soil and sand, (3) seal geological formations to enhance oil recovery and geologic CO2 sequestration, (4) repair stone and concrete structures, and (5) cover surfaces of these structures with protective layers. Although already in use in the sector of protection and renovation of stone monuments, to date the technique has remained mostly under research and optimization. To become fully implementable as a reliable and economically viable technique, it still requires further research in order to address its limitations, focus on parametrical optimization, up-scaling and life-size field experiments. All these, in an interdisciplinary effort of geologists, microbiologists, chemists, civil engineers and conservators of historic monuments, will move this eco-friendly and innovative branch of engineering from laboratory to field applications in the environmental and civil engineering, geotechnology and conservation of historic buildings. Given its eco-potential and innovativeness, in this study the principles of the technique, advantages, possible applications and challenges are reviewed.

Opis:
The paper presents different approaches to the proper and accurate production and modelling (multi- phase reaction) of CaCO3 formation in the most popular, different types of reactors, i.e. continuous reactor (STR – stirred tank reactors, MSMPR – mixed suspension, mixed product removal; tube reactor), a bubble column reactor and a thin film reactor. Many different methods of calcium carbonate production and their effect on the various characteristics of the product have been presented and discussed. One of the most important, from the point of view of practical applications, is the morphology and size of the produced particles as well as their agglomerates and size distribution. The size of the obtained CaCO3 particles and their agglomerates can vary from nanometers to micrometers. It depends on many factors but the most important are the conditions calcium carbonate precipitation and then stored. The experimental research was strongly aided by theoretical considerations on the correct description of the process of calcium carbonate precipitation. More than once, the correct modelling of a specific process contributed to the explanation of the phenomena observed during the experiment (i.e. formation of polyforms, intermediate products, etc.). Moreover, different methods and approaches to the accurate description of crystallization processes as well as main CFD problems has been widely reviewed. It can be used as a basic material to formulation and implementation of new, accurate models describing not only multiphase crystallization processes but also any processes taking place in different chemical reactors.

Opis:
The objective of this work is the preparation and the characterization of high density polyethylene /calcium carbonate (HDPE/CaCO3) composites. Polyethylene composites, containing 10-35 wt. % of CaCO3 and HDPE with MFI (Melt Flow index) (0.550 g/10mn) were prepared with co-extrusion process using extruder type Cincinati 90D. Thermal and mechanical studies were made in order to determine the parameters for obtaining a material (corrugated pipe) with optimal properties. The composite viscosity increased with filler content, suggesting the formation of filler agglomerates. Thermal analysis shows that addition of 30 % CaCO3 increased the thermal stability of HDPE around 32°C, decreasing the processing temperature of composites in 15°C. Regarding to the mechanical tests, the ring stiffness of the composites decreased with the addition of CaCO3. According to the obtained results, we suggest that HDPE/CaCO3 composites could be used in the pipe production where tensile strengths higher than 25 MPa are not required and for service temperatures between 30°C and 70°C.

Opis:
Gas-based direct reduction and magnetic separation process was applied in treating a high-phosphorus oolitic iron ore, of which phosphorus mainly occured as $Fe_3PO_7$ and apatite. The mechanism of $CaCO_3$ was investigated using XRD, SEM-EDS, and mineral phase analysis. Results showed that when no CaCO3 was added, most of the iron minerals were reduced to metallic iron, while $Fe_3PO_7$ was reduced to elemental phosphorus and mixed with the metallic iron particles. When a small amount of $CaCO_3$ was added, $CaCO_3$ preferentially reacted with $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and other components, preventing them from reacting with FeO and resulting in the increase of iron recovery. When the amount of $CaCO_3$ reached 25%, apatite was produced from the reaction of CaO and $Fe_3PO_7$, which could be later removed by grinding and magnetic separation.
