Opis:
The article discusses the effectiveness of geomagnetic prospection in detecting such parts of the early-Neolithic settlements areas in the vicinity of the village of Targowisko in which traces of only one building phase have survived. The purpose of the surveying programme was to obtain assemblages of artefacts and ecofacts related to a period of time that would be as short as possible, i.e. to the existence of a single family living in one house, representing a single cultural tradition, without any older or younger materials. It was assumed that this objective could only be achieved on the boundaries of settlements inhabited over longer periods of time (cf. Grygiel 1986). Thus, the geomagnetic prospection was carried out in selected target areas covering northern or southern edges of large settlements of the Linear Pottery (LBK) culture and the Malice culture (MC), which had already been thoroughly surveyed as part of rescue excavations at the early-Neolithic settlement complex of Targowisko, in connection with the construction of highway A-4, approx. 30 km east of Cracow (Fig. 1). The results of the geomagnetic survey made it possible to demarcate zones, each having an area of 10 ares, at three sites for the purpose of confirming the validity of the planned research strategy. The test excavations at sites 16 and 14–15 in Targowisko and at site 40 in Brzezie met the expectations, yielding assemblages of artefacts from narrow time horizons. They will become the core of works on the reconstruction of cultural transformation micro-processes at the confluence of the LBK culture and the MC.

Opis:
Background. Courts are by definition bureaucratic, hierarchical organisations, epitomised by low levels of networking potential, which basically lack mechanisms of information exchange, or those of sharing information both at the level of the organisation of the justice system (the macro scale) and within a given court (the micro scale). Research aims. The aims of this article was implementing modern management methods of common courts, based on the examples of the Gdańsk area courts, and attempts to provide an answer to the question of whether courts, viewed as bureaucratic bodies, are ready to launch organisational change aiming at the creation of organisations based on knowledge. Method. Based on the case study approach, this paper outlines the results of an innovative pilot study. Throughout the pilot study, sixty selected district, regional and appellate courts, with the help of external experts, were subjected to the implementation of “good practices” –managerial improvements. Also, the paper illustrates the findings of re examples of three district courts and one regional court, participating in the pilot study. Key Findings. Amidst the basic research methods employed in the paper are: literature-based studies, empirical analysis with the use of available secondary studies, as well as individually-conducted empirical studies conducted for the purposes of this paper, which has initiated the discussion on the notion of organisational culture in courts, and has raised the questions of whether a) the courts are ready to accept the changes aimed at altering their management; b) the organisational culture in the courts covered by the study determined the selection of practices to be implemented; c) organisational culture in courts lies at the foundation of building a knowledge-based organisation; and d) there exists a potential for sharing knowledge among the courts covered by the study in question. The results of the study in question prove that organisational culture of courts determined the possibility of implementing managerial practices aimed at shaping a knowledge-based organisation.

SOUTH-EASTERN POLAND
MIGRATIONS AND THEIR CHANGES
Opis:
The article discusses the origins of aspects of cultural change using the example of archaeological cultures in south-eastern Poland, and with special reference to the meso-region of the lower Wisłok River. This study concludes that it is difficult to identify local roots in a traditional cultural-historical sense for most cultures within the study area. Attention is therefore focused on migrations and other population movements, as well as more complex external impacts on local populations, which are regarded as the main factors stimulating cultural change. In addition, some transformations and formations of new units may be due to local development (evolution) of cultures.

Opis:
The question of nature-culture and music is approached in the text from several perspectives as points of gravity and profiles, as the ‘tenors’ of considerations of the nature-culture relationship within the context of musical behaviours: 1) the biological tenor - culture as the simulation or imitation of nature (the dominant feature of the art of the Palaeolithic and the rituals of the Neolithic; derivatives in agrarian cultures); in this context, all musical behaviours, the kinetic, verbal, social and symbolic were centred around obtaining and celebrating crops - the results of purposeful activity, patient waiting and the benevolence of supernatural powers. The joy from a powerful hope in the survival of a community through abundant harvests seems to have been the source of the synergy (mutual stimulation) of all the components of socio-musical events, collective rituals and free individual expression. 2) the social tenor, where verbal-dance-musical behaviours (generally speaking - amusement) serve to ‘hew off and distinguish an individual within a group (‘nature’). Thus the nature-culture relationship is translated or reflected in the interplay between the collective and the individual. The dance itself is a play between the (‘natural’) group action and the (‘cultural’) individualised performance. The oscillation between the action of a group and the display of an individual also occur in whirling dances of couples interspersed with individual sung ditties. The social tenor, the transition from collective nature to a culture that is also individual, also concerns the practising of song repertoire, and it is an important factor in understanding cultural change. 3) the conscious-psychological tenor, in which music and musical behaviour are conscious manifestations of culture within historical processes, without necessary references to nature. The fundamental question in this aspect of discussion is the relative extent to which culture is given or created. There is no doubt that nature is given to man, whilst culture needs time. Reflection on the link between music and the social environment leads to the conclusion that nature tightens, while culture loosens, music’s bond with the situational-social context that is strictly ascribed to it. 4) the structural tenor of the musical work/behaviour, which highlights the microworld of nature-culture, particularly the oscillation of openness/change and closedness/ constancy of musical works or behaviours. The nature-culture model can be referred to the logic of development or stylistic change in musical output itself. Following that quartet of tenors, it is worth posing the question as to whether there exists a fifth, linking all the previous four, a ‘cosmic’, theological tenor in the symphony of nature-culture; in other words, whether there exists a ‘school’ of tenors.

Opis:
The causes of considerably increasing call for “values” lie in accumulation of changes and in impenetrable number of offers in all aspects of life. The problem is that most often these are merely the calls for values or that values are “containers” enclosing everything possible. Thoughtful interpretation of values may help go out of the widespread indifference. Consciously evaluative dosage of resources, such as deference, time, power and money may contribute to the quality of our lives. Values as conscious or unconscious indicative standards and leading ideas of individuals and groups are characterized by current beliefs and by epoch-making paradigms in the background. Progressive program of modernity with methods of research, quantification and disposal has been authoritative so far. The program was very effective, and the possibilities of life of the contemporary society were significantly expanded. Together with the achievement of its goals, the epoch-making paradigm loses its meaning and mobilizing force. At the same time, it is seen what issues have still been open. So now we find that with the modern paradigm and it is necessary to show values leading into the future. The culture of life worthy of man needs effectiveness not only measurable in numbers, but also beauty that cannot be defined, and good free interpersonal relations. In many places, especially since the global financial and economic crisis, there have been shown dead ends of egocentric domination and seizure. It should be reminded how fundamental for us in our life is the size of the interpersonal and transcendental relationship. Sooner or later, the elementary questions, which are marginalized, appear: is there any sense and hope in my life, in our world, any sense and hope behind the whirl of life coming to the fore, beyond the threshold of death? Changes of values and the interpretation of values in our unusual breakthrough time apply to families. A lot of issues are in the state of breakthrough in family life: here the forms become multiplex, a lot of issues are getting relativised recklessly. Actually, the meaning and value of family is growing, not lowering, in the breakthrough time. It is not to be missed that families in earlier times were more stable than today. Remembering more stable families from former times makes the wish for them to come back understandable; however, it is not realistic. Deep changes of the course of life, the roles of gender and patterns of relationship mean breaking with the traditional culture of family. Thus, there emerge critical transition stages which cannot be stopped, but at best can be guided. Further development of family culture is not only for families, but for the society as such, of the greatest importance. Very important facts that are marginalized in today’s ”lifestyle” may be still met in families: valuable life is based not only on money, success, entertainment and well-being, but what is indispensable is to stay together, and also recognition, acceptance, benevolent correction and willingness to give.

Semantic change is a manifestation of the evolution of the semantic content of a word. We propose the study of semantic change linked to specific historical events and sociolinguistic situations, for example, the semantic connotations associated with everyday terms as España in various autonomous regions, demand its replacement by an euphemism Estado. Our hypothesis is that language adapts, if necessary, with an extraordinary agility to fulfill the need to express new, sometimes extraordinarily complex, realities not only through the use of neologisms (e.g., balompié), but also expanding, recycling or recreating the semantic load of heritage words (e.g., terrateniente). We propose to study and illustrate how language reflects the ideological and religious adherence of certain users of lexemes or word units (e.g., derechona, brotes verdes) and to provide, wherever possible, a link to the historical facts where they are born.

The author analyses a history of research on culture in communist Poland and the USSR (later Russian Federation). She finds similarities and differences. During the time of communist Poland a tendency was to standardize the supply of culture and make the access to it more democratic. The basic task of the sociology of culture in communist Poland was to control the advancement process of culture dissemination and research into the various forms of participation. However, in the second half of the 70s attention was more and more focused on the directions of cultural sociology development and functions. Following the fall of communism this discipline was faced with a challenge of embracing all the important directions of changes while indicating a now socio-cultural model at the same time. In the USSR, on the other hand, the government was interested only in the cultural research which was to confirm a hypothesis on fast cultural development of masses. Sociology of culture did not exist as a science, though. Following years of deep crisis, when perestroika period began, sociologists of post soviet Russia faced a serious challenge: how to move from “the only one true” Marxist paradigm to the mastering and usage of various theories which functioned in sociology around the world. The Author indicated the contribution in this respect i.a. of Vladimir Yadov or academics circled around Yurij Levada. In general one can say that in Poland as well as in Russia, the sociology of culture following the fall of communist regime and following certain major political, economic, social and cultural changes, found itself in entirely new reality.

Popular convictions as to character of Japanese culture are dominated by the orientalist stereotypes that include self-contradicting images of a society that is traditional and at the same time modern and technology-based. The ambiguous portrait of Japan seems to a certain extent justied, if one takes into account the transformation that took place throughout the 20th century and which gave rise to a new model of culture that was shaped thanks to a unique combination of various elements, both native and foreign. I am planning to focus on the impact of the mass media on the awareness and an everyday life of the Japanese people. Besides, I am going to consider the extent as to which the new environment has been transformed by the information revolution. For my research I shall use the contemporary cinema which perfectly reflects cultural issues of the nation in the process of the vehement social change, and which shows the hopes and fears of the future.

The article discusses how to research the impact of migration on social change in sending countries, without using a development studies framework. It argues for greater attention to the lives of ‘stayers’. A comprehensive approach to migration impact should begin by using mainstream sociological research to identify overall social trends in the origin country, before considering migration as one determinant of change. The case study is social remittances in contemporary Poland. Social remittances are understood to include not just foreign ideas, but also those resulting from migrants’ reflections on their own changing lives. One way to investigate how such social remittances ‘scale up’ to create cultural change is to consider the meso-level of regional migration culture. Taking the example of changing gender roles, I discuss Polish sociological and migration scholarship before presenting my own quantitative and qualitative data on stayers’ opinions about maternal migration. I show how stayers in regions with high levels of migration can become persuaded to condone maternal behaviour which is at odds with traditional views on gender roles and the importance of the extended family. Migration cultures are, however, not so visible in other parts of Poland or in Polish cities. The final part of the article employs the concept of migration sub-cultures – pockets of migration exposure and expertise among particular social groups. Examining the case of Wrocław, a prosperous city which might appear to be untouched by migration influences, I argue that such sub-cultures are probably more prevalent than might be assumed.

This article discusses the question of the emergence of new forms of collective identities brought about by the recent social and cultural changes and their influence on Polish national identity. Specifically, it attempts to analyse those evolutionary changes which have been transforming the character of this identity from an exclusive, ethnic model towards a pluralistic, civic one. The article aims to show that the most significant agent of these processes is a new urban middle class whose growing role in the Polish society challenges traditional national discourses. The article advances a thesis that we are witnessing an emergence of a new platform of identification which significantly blurs the overwhelming contours of traditional national identity and instead strengthens on the one hand local identification and on the other, a cosmopolitan one.

The aim of this article is to present formal organisations employees’ attitudes towards organisational change explanatory model. Initially, main results of conducted desk research on uptodate literature in the field are presented. The analysed secondary data sources mainly consist of research results on social phenomena accompanying organisational change. Three main conclusions of desk research constitute a basis for the explanatory model itself: an existence of noticeable need of bridging gaps between paradigms, necessity of taking a more balanced view on distance in employees attitudes towards change initiative and explaining relationship between individual attitudes and organisational culture. Next, the theoretical model of employees’ attitudes towards organisational change explanation is presented. It is developed on a basis of three distinguished concepts: Pamela S. Tolbert’s and Lynne G. Zucker’s microinstitutional theory, Krzysztof Konecki’s integrated organisational culture model and Paul J. Di Maggio’s and Walter W. Powell’s organizational field concept. Finally, the capabilities and challenges related to empirical application of presented explanatory model are discussed.
