Opis:
In presented research the impact of a politician’s economic status on his/her assessment and electoral chances was tested. In study 1 (N= 90) a politician with a high status was as-sessed as less moral and more competent than a low-status politician. In study 2 (N = 120) participants from Ireland and Poland were compared. Irish participants assessed a low--status politician as more moral and competent than the high-status one, whereas Polish participants assessed a high-status politician as more competent than the low-status one. Polish subjects generally assessed politicians’ morality lower than the Irish. The results sug-gest higher legitimization of wealth among Polish participants than the Irish, contrary to predictions. These results are discussed in reference to the system justification theory (Jost, Banaji, & Nosek, 2004) and legitimating myths (Jost, & Kay, 2003)

Opis:
Disability of an adult reveals itself before someone becomes adult, i.e. in developmental age, but in later life as well. It is connected with different level of physical and/or mental disability, with different durability and different level of obstacles in everyday life. Disability is conditioned by differentiated internal, external, bio-psycho-social and cultural factors and is a category and field of cultural research in special andragogy. This paper is thought as a draft of conceptualization of selected issues in the area of culture of the disabled and foundations of model of cultural study.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to draw critical attention to the use of photovoice as an anti-oppressive method in research with Aboriginal peoples. In response to the historical vulnerability of Aboriginal peoples to research that “wants to know and define the Other,” anti-oppressive methods deconstruct taken-for-granted research models and focus on privileging Indigenous voices, political integrity, and justice strategies. Anti-oppressive approaches are connected to emancipation and cannot be divorced from the history of racism. Theoretically, photovoice aligns well with anti-oppressive goals, using photographs and storytelling as a catalyst for identifying community issues towards informed solutions. Having roots in Freireian-based processes, photovoice has the goal of engaging citizens in critical dialogues and moving people to social action. Drawing on our recently completed photovoice study, Visualizing Breast Cancer: Exploring Aboriginal Women’s Experiences (VBC), we demonstrate that photovoice seems successful in enhancing critical consciousness among participants, but that outcomes may not be disruptive. While photovoice has the potential to develop counter-hegemonic anti-oppressive knowledge, this may be lost depending on how the research process is encountered; thus, we propose the implementation of a revisionary model which incorporates a culturally safe anti-oppressive lens.

Between literary and cultural comparative studies The article constitutes an attempt to present in a synthetic way the main assumptions behind the fundamental trends in the comparative studies of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as their evolution. Following the predominance of the influential model which had developed since the middle of the 19th century and focused chiefly on the genetic research of literary affiliations, and which had assumed the existence of a national literature as an organic entity, since the sixties of the 20th century, there arises a new perspective in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played by thematic and structural categories (motif, concept, topic, genre, current etc.). The nineties of the 20th century bring yet another attempt to reformulate the methods of comparative studies and to abandon focusing on literary studies, in favor of cultural research in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played, among others, by issues such as the concept of power, gender, race and also review and multi-, inter- and transculturalism

This paper presents a teaching innovation that has proved successful in stimulating the in-class participation and learning effectiveness of Asian students. The sample population of the research was the teachers and the students of universities in Taiwan and Mainland China. Convenience sampling was used. Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) was used to explore the feedback of learning course. The research results showed that (1) students in Taiwan and Mainland China both have a good confience in attendance and teamwork projects at the beginning of the course and; (2) Taiwanese students are confient in their own creativity and application ability at the beginning of the course and students from Mainland China have a regular habit of reading relevant marketing books.

Opis:
This article is about the evolution of the concept of civil society which has been taking place in response to the changing socio-political context. This process can be observed from two different perspectives. On the one hand, the concept is clearly contextual-it is always embedded in the problems of particular times and particular societies. On the other hand, the observed changes have a common vector. This can be seen in the parallel vicissitudes of the concept and its designates-social emancipation in modern times has been turbulent and erratic. One of the main advocates of this perspective is Amartya Sen (2002). This perspective also helps us to view contemporary civil societies as located on the aforementioned vector. This article tries to reconstruct it using a taxonomical analysis of aggregated data from the International Social Survey Programme 2004: Citizenship. The diversity of attitudes and patterns of civil activity in contemporary democracies is certainly multidimensional but the main axis is apparently defined by the post-industrial social formation and post-materialistic orientation

Opis:
Entering and staying on in the field or rather avoiding being kicked out are the two classic ethnographic challenges. The rather positivist nature of textbook guidance on dos and don’ts in fieldwork in general and in delicate issues in particular (for researchers` dilemmas in the field see Ryen 2002), tend to recommend a gentle, middle-class (rather female) interactional style. This gaze suffers from being both researcher-focused (cf.Fine 1994 on “Othering”) and based on problematic pre-fixed identities nailing us to the role pair as researcher and key informant. As the introductory extract illustrates, it takes patience also to have an ethnographer “hanging around”. This article deals with the credibility of qualitative research when accounting for or exploring how we do staying in the cross-cultural field and it asks how can we credibly explore the stamina that takes us further? If we accept fieldwork as social interaction, we need to bring the social (or the “inter”) of it into the exploration of our puzzle. Membership categorisation device (MCD) offers to take us closer to understanding and piecing together our puzzle, but to better get at the events taking place in field interaction there is a need also to introduce the wider cultural context and the images available (or not) to members. In this way I recognise the ethnomethodological differentiation between topic and resource, but argue that when understandings and images are not necessarily culturally shared and collective, we also need to make problematic how members deal with the unavailability of shared images. In the conclusion I argue that the artful side of the local interpretive work in the field is closely entangled with whatever meanings or images are available for construction (in line with Gubrium and Holstein 1997:121). In cross-cultural contexts more than in others, this is particularly delicate because in such contexts images and experiences often do not connect and may lead to complications or even breakdown in communication (Ryen 2002). Mending or repair thus becomes another crucial phenomenon, itself complex, in the evolving field relations. The analysis thus pinpoints the artistry of members` local collaborative efforts accentuated when constrained by images or descriptions that do not connect across cultures. This makes stamina a joint effort, though itself an intricate, emergent phenomenon. Next I will briefly introduce a couple of classic works on working with key informants followed by a brief presentation of the analytic approaches to be applied to my data from East- Africa. Before concluding, I will comment on “wading the field” as reflected in the close exploration of the cross-cultural extracts.

Opis:
Wartości rodzinne współczesnej młodzieży ukraińskiej w kontekście międzykulturowym Transformacje rodzinу w różnych krajach mają zarówno wspólne tendencje, jak i różnice, odzwierciedlone w wartościach rodzinnych młodzieży. Jednocześnie dla młodych ludzi idealna rodzina – to raczej rodzina o tradycyjnej strukturze z partnerskim stylem relacji, lecz z pewnym brakiem równowagi w podziale pełnionych ról. Różnice w opiniach dotyczących wartości rodzinnych mężczyzn i kobiet świadczą o znaczącym wpływie stereotypów dotyczących płci.
Family transformations in different countries have both common tendencies and differences that are reflected in young people’s perceptions of the family and family values. The article purpose is to analyse the family values of contemporary Ukrainian youth, taking into account the cross-cultural context. The performed analysis shows the similarity of family development trends in Ukraine and other European countries: moving away from the traditional family model, experimenting with other forms of relationships, postponing marriages and births of children etc., which is reflected in the family values of youth. At the same time, young people believe that an ideal family is rather a family with traditional structures and with a partner-type relationship, but with a certain imbalance in role distribution. The striking differences in family value perceptions characteristic for boys and girls testify to the significant influence of gender stereotypes. Keeping some of the traditional views, Ukrainian youth are actively experimenting with new forms of partnership/family. Young people’s perceptions of the family are contradictory: the idealized traditional model is combined with their willingness to experiments; the focus on partnerships is mixed with gender stereotype influence.

Opis:
Otaczająca nas ponowoczesna rzeczywistość zmusza badaczy kultury do poszukiwania niekonwencjonalnych metod badawczych, wykraczających poza ramy powszechnie stosowanych, do tej pory, narzędzi pomiaru.
Our postmodern surrounding is forcing scientists to look for unconventional research methods that go beyond the commonly used measuring tools. The author presents possibilities of two different methods, which are derived from one methodological branch—ethnography, more precisely, one of the most typical methods of the scientific tradition which is observation. These are ‘mystery shopping’ and ‘shadowing.’ Starting with the primary role of observation in research and in science generally, the author shows the most important characteristics of both methods— their advantages and difficulties they brings. Researches done by “Regional Cultural Observatory” Adam Mickiewicz’s University show their practical application and the need to find new research tools that are designed to improve activity of cultural institutions. This publication is an attempt to reflect on whether or not to include ‘mystery shopping’ and ‘shadowing’ to the range of methods by examining local cultural and education leaders improving the quality of service in the institutions involved in the field of culture? Presented (relatively new) methods, based on different types of scientific observation, seem to be interesting, since using of their advantages in the study of culture can bring quaint results. Dynamically changing environment forces the constant search for new and effective methods and comprehensive data demonstrating a wide field of influence of different factors. These two methods open up great opportunities to generate them, and consequently enhance research in the field of culture.
