Opis:
The problem of representing the Polish cultural landscape consists of two components. The first component is the choice of content. Wishing to define the breadth of the content of a cultural landscape map, one needs to remember that it is composed of two facets. The first facet, the material result of human activity, is easily discernable in the field and easily illustrated on a map. Elements included in this facet are: sacred and secular historical structures, the spatial layout of cities, archeological sites etc. The second facet of cultural landscape needs to be considered in immaterial terms. It is difficult to illustrate on a map, because its elements do not lend themselves to being topographically situated. One could mention, for example, religions, customs and traditions, a common historical past etc. Most often, one can only indirectly speculate about this facet of the cultural landscape, on the basis of the material characteristics of the cultural landscape. The second problem related to presenting cultural landscape on a map is the choice of graphic form for the map. The problem is to a large extent tied to difficulties stemming from the necessity of maintaining semantic correctness (the relation between “symbol” and “object”). In practice, during the graphic editing of a map representing the cultural landscape, one should remember to: a) choose a scale suitable for the representation, upon which depend the degree of detail and the generalization of the content; b) correctly depict the variation boundaries, taking into account sharp and fuzzy boundaries; c) make a well-designed symbol key.

Opis:
This paper attempts to characterise various cultural landscapes in the area of Eąuatorial Africa. To achieve this, the contents of various thematic maps and satellite photos representing: areas covered with forests (mostly secondary forests), naturę reserves, areas of extensive and intensive agriculture and urban-industrial areas were overlaid with the contents of map of potential vegetation (which represent, to use a simplification, the natural, primeval landscape). The method applied allowed for distinguishing five types of cultural landscape that correspond to five levels of transformation of the primeval landscape. The resulting map shows a mosaic-like structure of landscapes. This structure changes constantly. The surface area of regions with a certain landscape type increases or decreases, or else the regions change their locations. A detailed analysis of socio-economic processes (and the related changes in the natural environment) can constitute a basis for a prediction of cultural landscape transformation. It is the author's opinion that such prediction could be applied in various planning projects.

In our research we are seeking for a Lower Silesian identity, we are especially interested in the Polish-German cultural heritage in social remembrance (or social oblivion). In the article our basic purpose is to provide the grounds for discussion about the presence of the sacred space in social memory (the old German Calvary as a part of contemporary Lubawka’s cultural heritage), using group interviews with visual presentations to stimulate a journey back into the past, to familiarize with the place and its images. We aim at the reconstruction of “social frames of memory”, the moments when the small sacral architecture began to lose its religious mad social power, and we also want to show young residents’ attitudes towards this process. The project also seems to have some social value because it may become an introduction to the debate on preserving the Calvary as an element of local identity.

Opis:
This article concerns the transitions of cultural landscapes, especially of viticultural landscapes. The authors do not aim to present new definition of the term “landscape” but base their study on the existing output of Polish and foreign scholars. The fact that cultural landscapes are in a constant state of flux is stressed, and periods of both development and regression are included. These phenomena are illustrated with reference to the transformations of Poland's viticultural landscapes, the cultural landscapes of the Palmeral de Elche, and the mouth of the Vistula, as well as the metamorphosis of the landscape of Alto Douro. These examples may be an apt illustration of F. Braudel's concept of “longue durée”.

CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
Opis:
The characteristic features of the landscape of the Bieszczady National Park include a mutual penetration of elements of nature and culture. Areas representing supreme natural merits are composed of the polonina ranges (downs) and the lower mountain forests, together with their unique resources. On the other hand, superior cultural assets belong to historical landscapes in the 'land of valleys', preserving traces of old development and material culture, harmoniously inscribed into natural configurations. These traces are recorded with the help of vegetation and stones, including unkempt orchards, rows of old ash trees, balks and tracts, ancient linden trees and elms, as well as the overgrown underpinnings of cottages, manor houses or churches, either Eastern rite or Uniate, abandoned cemeteries, roadside crosses and derelict cellars. The permanent existence of a cultural landscape calls for systematic protection. A pertinent programme has been inaugurated within the Plan for the Protection of the Bieszczady National Park; its scope ecnompasses recommendations about protection, intent on, i. a. the preservation of the former structures of villages and traces of development, the protection of old trees and the retention of old names as well as rendering all those resources available for educational purposes. Particular conservation is due to roadside crosses and tombstones, whose survival is to a considerable degree imperilled. Nonetheless, it is quite possible that these souvenirs of a bygone world will be meticulously examined and subsequently preserved. The group of persons interested in the history and culture of the region is consistently growing, and the number of publications and historical iconography is on the rise.

The process of devastation of the Polish cultural landscape begun during World War II, rapidly accelerated because of the agricultural reform in 1944, and then consolidated by years of neglect in this sphere, brought about the situation in which it is necessary to use modern, and first of all effective instruments making it possible to change the existing state of affairs. It is especially important in the case of small historical monuments situated outside metropolitan areas. Years of delay caused the situation in which it is difficult to struggle for a change of the condition of the mentioned monuments using only standard methods such as preservation care or a process of spatial planning. In the scopes mentioned above it is necessary to use an interdisciplinary instrument, which could be architectural tourist trails. In a modern approach they can join actions regarding management, preservation of historical monuments, consciously carried out spatial planning, creating architecture of landscape and tourism. This junction of means, with a simultaneous use of the triple selfgovernment structure, can bring good results beyond expectation. The author of this text, a scientific‐didactic worker of the Set of Departments of Cultural Science of the Jagiellonian University, co‐operating in the sphere of the cultural heritage protection with the Marshal’s Office of Małopolska Voivodeship, presents in his article a theoretical model of this kind of trail, taking into account the most urgent needs in the scope of renovation, development, animation and management of small historical monuments (treated as an integral element of a regional cultural landscape).

CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
VINEYARDS & WINESHOPS (ZIELONA GÓRA)
Opis:
The area around Zielona Góra is regarded as the most northerly wine making region in the world. The development of vine cultivation was determined by an exceptionally favourable climate and a hilly terrain, specially its sunny southern slopes. The tradition of vine growing in Zielona Góra goes back to the Middle Ages and is confirmed by a note from 1314. At the end of the nineteenth century vine cultivation started to decline, a process which went on in the following century. The area of the vineyards dropped considerably from 1400 hectares during the 1860s to a mere 110 hectares in 1937. The last local wine producer went bankrupt at the end of 1990s. Today, wine production in Zielona Góra is being revived thanks to the initiative of associations created by numerous growers, planning new vineyards in the region of the town. An inseparable element of the landscape of Zielona Góra were wineshops built on the plantations. The first such objects appeared in the eighteenth century as typically utilitarian wooden sheds and bowers. Brick houses were erected in the nineteenth century, and in 1865 they totalled 697. Residential and farm buildings, frequently featuring original architecture, survived to the early twentieth century. Today only several examples are extant. The house on 'Winne Wzgórze' is a brick edifice from 1818, surrounded by a vineyard and at present encircled with a glassed-in construction - the Palm House, which functions as a cafe. Several other objects, ensconced among contemporary city buildings, come from the first half of the nineteenth century. Unique objects include the so-called wineshop tower from Budachow (today: in the ethnographic Skansen in Ochla near Zielona Góra). The eighteenth- century two-storey building with an attic is covered by means of a hip roof. A chapel whose history dates back to 1314 was raised to commemorate the victims of a plague epidemic which took the lives of 700 residents of the 'town of wine'. During the nineteenth century the chapel fulfilled the function of a wineshop. The landscape of Zielona Góra no longer features so-called 'naboty' - charming buildings erected on a regular polygonal ground plan and covered with a roof resembling a dome. The major part of the outfitting of the houses, including tools used for growing vine and equipment for the processing of the fruit, has also not been preserved. Scarce surviving examples can be seen at permanent exhibitions held by the Lubuska Land Museum and the Ethnographic Museum in Ochla.

The autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha is the region with the biggest vineyard area of Spain. The rural landscape is totally adapted to the geographical conditions of the Mediterranean Europe, with signs of proper identity derived from its historical tradition and a peculiar way of working the territory by the population. Its natural dynamics and complexity, consequence of the capacity to adapt to social and economic processes which have conditioned it over time, is united to the importance of the agricultural structure. This work has the objective to analyse that kind of process with the analysis of the vineyard's historical evolution, transformations derived from the application of the Common Agrarian Policy of the European Union, and its undeniable cultural nature that means an interesting potential to contribute to the territorial development.

Opis:
The article aims to identify areas of historical, cultural, and landscape values that are located in the suburban area of Warsaw and which may play an essential role in stabilizing the urban ecosystem of Warsaw in the future. Since it turns out that the most effective form of preserving these values is to take them under legal protection, the article shows good and bad practices in this area, identifying the most significant threats and indicating opportunities and scenarios worth considering for the future. Finally, the purpose of the article is to draw attention to the importance of spatial and scenic connections, emphasizing the importance of the surrounding landscape, which was once an immanent feature of, e.g. suburban estates. The hypothesis is that in the face of progressing climate change and melting natural resources, it is worth paying attention to the importance of all urban ecosystem elements, even smaller ones, because they are a component of a larger whole and are required for ecological balance. Existing resources should be strengthened and protected, and new places for protection should be sought. Such sites may be the former foregrounds, the immediate surroundings of monuments, which in the past functioned as larger compositions and should be protected as such.

More and more frequently, one witnesses these days the appearance of a new approach to historical cultural landscapes. Not only do they now embrace objects of historical and environmental value, but also the potential for local and regional development. However, such an understanding of historical cultural landscapes, as a potential for local and regional development, necessitates additional instruments, plans, approaches, and methodologies. The article presents an analysis of a landscape plan in Germany and a case study on the potential of historical cultural landscapes for local and regional development in Poland. Conducted studies reveal the usefulness of activities for the protection of historical cultural landscapes in the context of land management. Such activities contribute to the improvement of landscape protection and conservation methods, taking into consideration their potential for local and regional development at the same time.
