Presented text is a review of the book The Many Faces of Multilingualism. Language Status, Learning and Use Across Contexts, edited by Piotr Romanowski and Martin Guardado. Discussed book undertakes the issues of multilingualism, one of the most vivid phenomenon in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics recently. The volume consisting of 11 chapters, is divided in two parts: ‘(Socio) Linguistic Aspects of Multilingualism’ and ‘Pedagogical Aspects of Multilingualism’. The contributors (all multilingual), coming from different countries (e.g. Poland, Latvia, Canada, Brazil, Japan, South Africa), focuse on specific questions related to multilingual education and analyze challenges of the multilingual society.
Niniejszy tekst stanowi recenzję książki The Many Faces of Multilingualism. Language Status, Learning and Use Across Contexts pod redakcją Piotra Romanowskiego i Martina Guardado. Omawiana pozycja podejmuje problematykę wielojęzyczności, jednego z najbardziej dyskutowanych zjawisk w językoznawstwie stosowanym i socjolingwistyce w ostatnim czasie. Tom składający się z 11 rozdziałów, podzielony jest na dwie tematyczne części: „(Społeczno)-lingwistyczne aspekty wielojęzyczności” i „Pedagogiczne aspekty wielojęzyczności”. Autorzy (wszyscy wielojęzyczni), pochodzący z różnych krajów (np. z Polski, Łotwy, Kanady, Brazylii, Japonii, RPA), badają poszczególne kwestie związane z edukacją wielojęzyczną i analizują wyzwania wielojęzycznego społeczeństwa.

W artykule podejmuję temat sposobu przedstawiania, reprezentacji i wizerunku różnorodności etnicznej i kulturowej w podręcznikach do pierwszego etapu edukacji, zatwierdzonych przez Ministerstwo Edukacji Narodowej na przestrzeni ostatnich dwudziestu lat, z akcentem na te aktualnie obowiązujące. Przedstawiam w nim wstępne wyniki badań podjętych w tym obszarze w roku szkolnym 2017/18. Obejmują one w głównej mierze analizy podręczników i towarzyszących im ćwiczeń, dopełnione materiałem empirycznym pochodzącym z wywiadów o charakterze nieformalnym, prowadzonych z nauczycielami, bibliotekarzami, księgarzami, studentami i pracownikami wrocławskich hurtowni książek oraz z obserwacji etnograficznych. Taka strategia badawcza, uwzględniająca udzielenie głosu innym, umożliwiła mi spojrzenie na wytwór, jakim jest podręcznik w szerszym, niż wąskometodyczne, świetle. Podręcznik stanowi w takim podejściu kulturowy artefakt, a zarazem element towarzyszący czy wręcz wpisujący się w procesy enkulturacji uczniów, który można analizować i interpretować z pozycji antropologicznych.
In the article, I discuss the presentation, representations and images of ethnic and cultural diversity in government-approved early school education textbooks over the last twenty years, with the focus on the currently used ones. My argument is based on the initial results of a research study launched in 2017. The study mainly involves analyses and interpretations of the textbooks and the empirical data from informal interviews with teachers, librarians, students, and booksellers, as well as from ethnographic observations in school libraries, bookstores etc. This ethnographic research strategy, which makes room for the voice of Others, has helped me explore the product that is a textbook in a wider perspective. In this framework, the textbook is a cultural artefact and at the same time a factor in students’ enculturation which can be analysed and interpreted from anthropological positions.

This paper attempts to deliver a reconstruction in historical terms of anthropology of education and the ethnographic research on the relation between culture and upbringing. This aims is being realized through comparison of the theses and concepts found in diverese schools and research traditions that had grown out of different paradigms. In this case the main issue of that comparison is the anglosaxon and German tradition. This enables in a large extent to draw the main theoretical and methodological presented by anthropology of education in the past, as well it presents today in a more global context.
Niniejszy tekst stanowi próbę rekonstrukcji historycznej nurtu antropologii edukacji i etnograficznych badań nad związkiem kultury i wychowania. Cel ten realizowany jest poprzez porównanie tez i koncepcji realizowanych w obrębie różnych szkół i tradycji badawczych wyrosłych w odrębnych kręgach paradygmatycznych. W tym przypadku najważniejszym przedmiotem porównania jest tradycja anglosaska i niemiecka. Zestawienie takie pozwala bowiem w znaczniej mierze określić główne założenia teoretyczno-metodologiczne, jakie antropologia edukacji przedstawiała w przeszłości, jak i przedstawia obecnie, czyniąc to już w kontekście globalnym.

As a result of their unpredictable ability to adapt to varying environmental conditions, microorganisms inhabit different types of biological niches on Earth. Owing to the key role of microorganisms in many biogeochemical processes, trends in modern microbiology emphasize the need to know and understand the structure and function of complex microbial communities. This is particularly important if the strategy relates to microbial communities that cause biodeterioration of materials that constitute our cultural heritage. Until recently, the detection and identification of microorganisms inhabiting objects of cultural value was based only on cultivation-dependent methods. In spite of many advantages, these methods provide limited information because they identify only viable organisms capable of growth under standard laboratory conditions. However, in order to carry out proper conservation and renovation, it is necessary to know the complete composition of microbial communities and their activity. This paper presents and characterizes modern techniques such as genetic fingerprinting and clone library construction for the assessment of microbial diversity based on molecular biology. Molecular methods represent a favourable alternative to culture-dependent methods and make it possible to assess the biodiversity of microorganisms inhabiting technical materials and cultural heritage objects.

Opracowanie dotyczy oceny atrakcyjności wizualnej krajobrazu fragmentu doliny Wkry oraz terenów przyległych położonych w gminie Glinojeck. Obszar leży w północno-zachodniej części woj. mazowieckiego, w północnym pasie strefy staroglacjalnej. Zagadnienie rozpatrywano przy wykorzystaniu metod: inwentaryzacji krajoznawczej oraz oceny atrakcyjności wizualnej krajobrazu P. Śleszyńskiego (1999). Wartości wskaźnika atrakcyjności wizualnej krajobrazu (AWK) wahały się od 3,80 do +3,21. Na tej podstawie wydzielono osiem klas terenów. Największy udział wykazują tereny o: przeciętnej atrakcyjności wizualnej krajobrazu – 28,4% oraz tereny mało atrakcyjne – 24,1% i tereny nieatrakcyjne – 22,5%. Udział terenów o atrakcyjności wyższej od przeciętnej wynosi 15,9%. Około 30% obiektów dziedzictwa kulturowego gminy Glinojeck znajduje się w dolinie rzeki Wkry wyróżniającej się wysokimi wartościami AWK.
The paper refers to the valuation of visual attractiveness of landscape of a section of the Wkra Valley and its surroundings located in the Gmina of Glinojeck. This area is located in the north-western part of the Mazovian Voivodeship within the northern section of the old-glacial zone. The study of the issue is based on the methods of cultural heritage and landscape inventory as well as the valuation of visual attractiveness of landscape by P. Śleszyński (1999). The values of the indicator of visual attractiveness of landscape for the study area range from –3.80 to +3.21. On this basis eight classes of areas have been delimited. The highest share is taken by the areas of medium visual attractiveness of landscape (28.4%) as well as the areas of little attractiveness (24.1%) and unattractive areas (22.5%). The areas of the attractiveness above medium level make up mere 15.9%. Almost 30% of cultural heritage of the Gmina of Glinojeck is located in the valley of the River Wkra.

Szczególna uwaga badaczy została skierowana na problematykę aspiracji kobiet zatrudnionych w wojsku i zestawienie wyników badania w tym zakresie z warunkami pracy w siłach zbrojnych. Autorki przedstawiają koncepcję zarządzania różnorodnością z perspektywy wymagania tworzenia w organizacji wojskowej warunków pracy, umożliwiających właściwe wykorzystanie różnic pomiędzy jej członkami.
The article aims to provide an insight into diversity management in the military from the perspective of gender equality. Special attention was devoted by the researchers to the issue of the aspirations of women employed in the army as well as the comparison of research results in this regard with working conditions in the armed forces. The authors present a concept of diversity management in a military organization from the perspective of the need to create working conditions that allow proper use of differences among its members

Opis:
Głównym celem artykułu jest opis metody uwzględniania otoczenia powiatów w polskich badaniach. W analizach tego typu (do tej pory) często nie brano pod uwagę informacji spoza badanego obszaru. Na użytek badania opracowano procedurę wyznaczania wartości wskaźników uwzględniających zasoby zarówno z danego powiatu, jak i z otaczającego go obszaru wyznaczanego według jednolitych i przejrzystych kryteriów. Egzemplifikację metody przedstawiono dla wskaźnika atrakcyjności kulturowej, który jest jednym z komponentów wskaźnika atrakcyjności turystycznej.
The main aim of the article is to describe the method of including powiats’ surrounding area in the Polish research. In such analyses, information from beyond the examined area have not been considered so far. For the purposes of the study, a procedure was developed for setting the value of indicators including the resources from both a certain powiat and its’ surrounding area, which was determined according to consistent and transparent criteria. The exemplification of the method was presented for the cultural attractiveness index, which is one of the tourist attractiveness index components.
Основная цель этой статьи представить характеристику метода учитывающего окружающую среду повятов в польских обследованиях. До сих пор в таком анализе часто не учитывалась информация из-за пределов обследуемой области. Для обследования была разработана методология определения значений показателей с включением фондов как данного повята, так и из окружающего его района, который определялся согласно единообразным и прозрачным критериям. Иллюстрация метода была представлена для культурного показателя привлекательности, который является составной частью показателя туристической привлекательности.

Zarządzanie różnorodnością stanowi obecnie najwyższe stadium rozwoju funkcji personalnej. Z uwagi na coraz większą liczbę przedsiębiorstw międzynarodowych, w których praca wykonywana jest w zespołach złożonych z przedstawicielu wielu narodowości, istotnym zagadnieniem jest jeden z aspektów zarządzania różnorodnością (diversity management) – zarządzanie różnorodnością kulturową (cultural diversity management). W zespołach heterogenicznych kulturowo zauważa się pozytywny potencjał kreowany przez ich różnorodność, jednak wciąż jest jeszcze wiele ograniczeń na poziomie jednostki, zespołu i całej organizacji, które uniemożliwiają osiągnięcie wielu strategicznych zamierzeń. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opisanie wspomnianych barier na podstawie przeprowadzonego case study oraz rekomendacja rozwiązań niwelujących wskazane ograniczenia.
Diversity management is currently the highest stage in the development of the human resource function. In light of the development of multinational corporations, where work is performed in teams made up of representatives of many nationalities, one of the aspects of diversity management is managing cultural diversity. In culturally heterogeneous teams, there is a positive creative potential, but many limitations remain at the individual, group, and entire organization levels that prevent the attaining of many strategic goals. The aim of this article is to highlight these barriers using a case study as the basis and to recommend solutions to address the indicated constraints.

The contemporary ecological crisis compels us to undertake research and adopt measures that will ensure the sustainable development of humanity. The main point here is that while satisfying the needs of current generations, it is necessary to respect the needs of future generations as well as nature’s capabilities. Works on a concept of development that would allow this task to be accomplished have been carried out for the last several decades. They resulted in the formulation of the still-evolving idea of sustainable development. With the current state of knowledge, it seems vital that this idea should comprise protection of biocultural diversity since, as clearly evidenced by the research conducted, the interrelated biological, cultural and linguistic diversity affects development. This article aims at highlighting the necessity of incorporating biocultural diversity into the idea of sustainable development and it points out the need for integral concern for the diversity of Earth’s heritage. Only integral care of all types of diversity gives hope for the protection of each of them and increases the chances of building a sustainable world.
Współczesny kryzys ekologiczny skłania do podejmowania badań i działań, które zapewnią trwały rozwój ludzkości. Chodzi o to, by zaspakajając potrzeby aktualnego pokolenia respektować potrzeby przyszłych pokoleń oraz możliwości przyrody. Prace nad koncepcją rozwoju, która pozwoli zrealizować to zadanie trwają od kilku dekad. W ich wyniku powstała idea zrównoważonego rozwoju, która wciąż ewoluuje. Przy obecnym stanie wiedzy ważne wydaje się uwzględnienie w niej ochrony różnorodności biokulturowej. Badania jednoznacznie wskazują bowiem na korelację pomiędzy rozwojem a wzajemnie ze sobą powiązanymi różnorodnościami: biologiczną, kulturową i językową. Artykuł ten stawia sobie za cel ukazanie potrzeby włączenia różnorodności biokulturowej do idei zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz wskazanie na konieczność łącznej troski o różnorodność ziemskiego dziedzictwa, tylko integralna troska o wszystkie rodzaje różnorodności daje bowiem nadzieję na ochronę każdej z nich i zwiększa szanse na zbudowanie zrównoważonego świata.

Aim: This research aims to understand the value of individuals having several inherent cultures and explore their specific needs and skills to improve managing cultural challenges in the work environment. The emerging conceptual framework of reaching ‘The New Cultural Normal’ demonstrates opportunities for dealing with cross-cultural situations not only internationally but especially intra-national. Design / Research methods: Based on insights and narratives of bicultural employees collected through 18 interviews, several vital categories emerged followed by the attribution of each to a corporate setting and considering which has the most substantial influence on that category. As biculturalism is an extreme form of coping with cultural diversity, the interviewees represent vital experts in coping with culturally diverse challenges. Conclusion / Findings: The emerging concept of reaching ‘The New Cultural Normal’ describes the process of attaining the status of full integration of biculturalism among organizations. It will help each corporate setting level, defined as bicultural employees, colleagues, supervisors, and the company, to enhance their awareness of dealing with cross-cultural situations. Originality / value of the article: This study provides a beneficial starting tool for shaping the future workplace where more inclusion and contentment will lead to qualitative improved team outcomes thus increasing corporate performance and can even result in long-term societal changes.

Prowadzona do tej pory analiza ubioru dawnej Sądecczyzny pomijała jego wariantowość. Powielana zarówno przez badaczy jak i lokalnych regionalistów idea jednego wariantu stroju została skutecznie utrwalona w świadomości grupy identyfikowanej jako Lachy Sądeckie, a hermetycznie zamknięty obszar, całkowicie odporny na transformację stał się wyłącznym obszarem jego występowania. Proces użytkowania tradycyjnych strojów lachowskich jest istotnym elementem dyskursu społecznego, a jego analiza pobudza do kolejnych rozważań: czy nowa kreacja/rekompozycja to kontynuacja zjawisk folkloru, folkloryzmu, czy zupełnie inne zjawisko w kontekście autofolkloryzacji.
In their studies of the clothing of the former Sądecczyzna region conducted so far, scholars have omitted its variability. The idea of there being only one variant of the traditional costume, embraced and copied both by researchers and by local regionalists, was effectively fixed in the consciousness of the group identified as Sądecki Lachs. The region, thus hermetically sealed and supposedly resistant to any transformation, has become identified as an area where this variant has exclusively occurred. The use of traditional Lach costumes is an important element of social discussion, and its analysis stimulates further research problems, e.g.: Is a new creation/recomposition a continuation of the phenomena of folklore? Is it folklorismus? Or is it a completely different phenomenon in the context of autofolklorization?

Opis:
The aim of the article is to identify challenges in managing multicultural teams, which, according to the authors, are extremely important in modern human resource management. This paper is based on literature studies and available reports. The authors prove that the challenges associated with the effective management of multicultural teams are very large, especially considering the stereotypes and prejudices related to the cultural diversity of employees and the diverse competences of managers who manage multicultural teams. The main value of the study is to clarify the need to raise the awareness of managers in terms of the development potential of multicultural teams, taking into account both their strengths and weaknesses, while pointing to the need for competence development in managers and their ability to build positive relations between representatives of different cultures.
Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja wyzwań w zarządzaniu zespołami wielokulturowymi, które zdaniem autorek są szczególnie ważne we współczesnym zarządzaniu zasobami ludzkimi. Opierając się na różnych źródłach, autorki argumentują, że wyzwania związane ze skutecznym zarządzaniem wielokulturowymi zespołami są bardzo duże, szczególnie mając na uwadze stereotypy i uprzedzenia łączące się z różnorodnością kulturową pracowników oraz zróżnicowane kompetencje menedżerów, którzy zarządzają wielokulturowymi zespołami. W pierwszej części artykułu wyjaśniono pojęcia wielokulturowości i zarządzania międzykulturowego. W kolejnej części przedstawiono atuty i słabości pracy w wielokulturowych zespołach. Następnie opisano kompetencje i najważniejsze zadania menedżerów zespołów wielokulturowych, a w ostatniej części przeanalizowano wyzwania – trudności i problemy w zarządzaniu wielokulturowymi zespołami.

The aim of the article is to draw attention to the new challenges and tasks of the two sub-disciplines of education (comparative and cross-cultural education) in the face of widespread cultural diversity, growing nationalisms and the ongoing war in Ukraine. The author assumes that cultural diversity is the civilisational wealth of mankind, therefore these sub-disciplines are confronted with the challenge of conducting, in a conscious and responsible manner, the educational activities that provide knowledge about their own culture and other cultures and their representatives. The author presents numerous problems that these subdisciplines have to address, ranging from the awareness of the value of inherited culture to the need and necessity to transcend one's own ethnocent3rism and sociocentrism. He poses numerous questions, refers to historical facts, points to the need for the emancipation of national memories, etc. What is seen as the fundamental challenge for comparative and cross-cultural education is the one of liberating oneself from hyper-subordination and the ability to engage in a dialogue free from propaganda that intends to dominate the thinking and attitudes oriented towards cognition, understanding, cooperation, collaboration.
