The aim of the paper is to present a model of the principal driving forces responsible for the proliferation of roadside memorials in Poland. Based on desk research, fieldwork and interviews, a three dimensional model has been developed. There are three dimensions of road[1]side memorials: 1) global, 2) societal, and 3) individual. Each of the dimensions is composed of two pairs of distinctive elements, i. e. motoring heritage and memorial mania, wayside crosses and cemetery traditions, and trauma and religiosity.

In the past, the wayside shrines and crosses in Warmia were commonly equipped with wooden rustic sculptures. For their better exposure, various architectural forms of the shrine constructions were used. However due to numerous factors, the sculptures of the Saints have not survived in their natural place. Such conclusion is springing to mind after full area and archives research. Having confronted the shrines' present state with the past, substantial loss in resources have been acknowledged. Out of 1370 wayside shrines only 69 contained a sculpture. As a result, only these sculptures, which were earlier documented and still in existence in situ, represent the only source of knowledge regarding the Warmia history, its community and culture. The origin of the sculptures is owed to frequently anonymous, local artists, who fulfilled particular social and personal orders. They used specific iconography models. One can distinguish iconography motives regarding the Christ, Holy Mary and the Saints in wooden, rustic sculptures. The most frequent motive of the sculptures regards, however, Holy Mary, with a very characteristic for Warmia – Pietà.

Opis:
The author in the article refers to a broad discussion on the origin of ideas and artistic inspiration for Celtic crosses. She refers to a Hilary Richardson of the Armenian and Georgian origin of the concept of the Celtic cross, also to the results of her book The symbols of pagan Celtic crosses. Myths, symbols, images. In this book she indicates a cultural affinity of Ireland and the Syria. She points to the compositional and iconographic parallels between the Early Medieval Irish crosses and tombs mosaics of Edessa, dated to the III century. Reinforcing the thesis of H. Richardson, indicates the possibility of the existence an artistic tradition, in Late Antiquity and Early Medieval Syria, which is able to reach Ireland. She indicates the Celtic crosses, which have the most parallels with Syrian decoration (monasteries from Arboe, Monasterboice, Kells, Clones). The author concludes that they are grouped only in the Middle East of Ireland, in several counties (Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Tyron).

The objective of this article is to analyse the different textual strategies with which María Rosal Nadales makes a transtextual construction in her anthology "Al este del andén". The use of this technique responds to different reasons: the active role that is assigned to the reader and the playful character in which the writing is framed, the tribute to and poetic concordance with other authors, the surprise effect and the irony, the postmodern fusion of classical culture and popular culture and, finally, the ethical-aesthetic commitment to point out contradictions, create new metaphors and encourage the reader's reflection together with new ways of thinking, especially around the figure of the woman poet and the representation of the female body.

The presented description of the available sources for the research on the small sacral architecture focuses on three types of them: archives, cartographic data and memoirs. Each of them provided important information and prompted to undergo a further field research. The latter not only confirmed data already found in the sources under examination, but led to a discovery of some new valuable material sources. The analysed example can serve as a support for the thesis that employing a combination of different cognitive, empirical methods in research is justifiable.

Archaeological explorations carried out inside the crypts of Catholic churches typically deliver a wealth of movable historical artefacts, including numerous devotional objects such as pilgrim souvenirs. During excavation works in the crypts of Końskowola parish church of The Discovery of The Holy Cross and St. Andrew the Apostle, two wooden crosses made of dark wood were found. Looking at the history of devotionalism and the pilgrimage movement, it became possible to define the role of the described objects when they reached Końskowola. Type analysis of the material used in the production of the objects can help in further studies on wooden objects brought to Poland over the centuries.

Relationship between the live assessment of Holstein-Friesian bulls and beef breed crosses, and the post-mortem objective evaluation of beef carcasses. Methods of assessing the slaughter and fattening characteristics of live cattle are a common and inseparable element of breeding work, but the commonly used visual assessment methods are not fully objective. Nowadays, innovative methods for the computer image analysis of beef carcasses, which are usually precise and objective than methods and are often used. The aims of this study was to determine the relationship between live assessment and post-mortem analysis for the objective evaluation of carcasses, and to determine if it is possible to predict carcass quality based on live measurements. The material consisted of bulls that were Holstein Friesian breed (N=128), and beef breed crosses (N =170). The experiments included the zoometric measurement of the bulls and the results of an objective evaluation of the carcasses using computer image analysis. In terms of the beef breed crosses all live measurements were signifi cantly correlated (P < 0.05) with the post-slaughter values. The coeffi cients of determination (R2) were higher for crossbreed bulls than for dairy bulls by over 20% in the case of the distance between the heel and the shoulder and for hind quarter volume. In both research groups an increase in height at the withers resulted in a body conformation of(standardized regression coeffi cients –ß) 0.68 and 1.006, for pure breed and beef breed crosses respectively. Live cattle measurements – especially measurements performed on beef breed crosses, may forecast selected characteristics in beef carcasses.

Opis:
Our study involved the first-ever evaluation of the performance of anther culture and wheat × maize hybridization techniques in producing haploids or doubled haploids as a result of spontaneous doubling of the chromosome number during androgenesis in plants from 30 wheat genotypes including ancient, local and modern types. The results indicated that the best induction rates of androgenic structures and haploid embryos for the hexaploid and tetraploid wheat genotypes were obtained with anther culture and wheat × maize hybridization, respectively. Whereas only one regenerated plant from 15 genotypes of tetraploid wheat was obtained, 13 plants were regenerated from 15 genotypes of hexaploid wheat. Moreover, haploid embryos obtained in wheat × maize hybridization 60 and 100% green plants regenerated in relation to the number of the cultured haploid embryos. Genotypes with high induction capacity to produce androgenic structure or haploid embryos did not have desired haploid plantlets regeneration capacity and vice-versa. However, with both methods, hexaploid wheat genotypes had a considerable ability to produce green plants. Doubled haploid plants were obtained from ancient and local wheat genotypes by both methods, but not from modern wheat. Those genotypes can be used as parents in future wheat breeding programs and new varieties may be obtained by selecting pure lines in wheat populations.

The author presents iconography of Daniel between the lions on the crosses, which were made in Ireland and Scotland in the period 8th-12th centuries. This scene is represented on eleven Irish crosses (Kells, Kilree, Moone, Casteldermot, Galoon, Clones, Arboe, Drumcliff) and on two crosses from Scotland (Iona, Maigle). The author divides all scenes with Daniel between the lions on three groups: Daniel with two lions, Daniel with four lions, Daniel with seven lions. The autor states that scene with Daniel symbolizes on the Celtic Crosses very important step of the spiritual ladder to the heaven. This idea was basic for the monastic live of Irish monks in Christian Ireland.

W miejscowościach położonych w centralnej części woj. podkarpackiego (Wiercany, Wola Zgłobieńska, Boguchwała, Głogów Młp., Husów) zinwentaryzowano łącznie 117 obiektów małej architektury sakralnej, w tym 89 kapliczek i 28 krzyży.

Across the geographical landscape of Warmia one can point numerous architectural objects which exist as war memorials and were built in honour of the Warmia inhabitants fallen during the World War I. However, among them there are also objects which architecture is convergent with the one of the Warmia wayside shrines as far as the material used for building – bricks, and their Gothic Revival style. Longterm studies confirmed that some of the shrines accepted by the state departments of cultural heritage protection are indeed war memorials. This clear example of misunderstanding within architectural types classification was observed in Długobór. The article and the conducted proof explanation are dedicated to this object. The reason for classification of the shrines, this one and similar objects on Biesowo, Lubomino, Lutry and Tolkowiec was removing commemorative and military elements from these objects, although such elements were initially endowed with those emblems. Explaining the problem of the Długobór memorial classification was the first step towards further researches regarding various forms of the war memorials in Warmia.

Opis:
In 2015, during the reconstruction of Nadrzeczna Street and Bohaterów Getta Square, in the area of the intersection with Jaskrowska Street, it was made the discovery of human bone remains. As a result of the rescue investigations undertaken, an area of approximately 550 square meters was tested. They were discovered among others relics of foundations, made of broken limestone and remains of the cemetery. The historical research showed that these foundations were relics of the St. Barbara church, around which there was a churchyard cemetery called „the cemetery outside the city” in the sources. At the remains they were found rosary beads, medallions, crosses, single glass beads, iron buttons, bronze and bone coins, hooks, buckles, pieces of cloth and textile and haberdashery ornaments. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of religious items. The collection of devotional items includes 14 exhibits. It is a diverse collection in terms of morphological and stylistic, and above all iconographic. Metal medallions and crosses were made from non-ferrous metals in casting or minting techniques. The minted medallions were made from thin badges. Glass medallions were made from two glass panes, bound in a metal frame, between which there was an image reflected on the paper. The remains of rosaries are beads, differing in terms of size, colors and shapes. Only in 9 graves it was managed to set the position of devotional items on the remains of the deceased. Most often, devotions were found at the height of clasped hands folded in the lap. Other places where devotional items are found are: around the head, around the clavicle, around the thigh – above the knees and at the feet level. The subject of images on medallions and crosses is diverse. The sets of images on the obverses and other sides are also interesting. On one picture of a glass medallion it was identified the figure of Saint Josef. The figure of St. Benedict was on two medallions. The figure of St. John the Baptist was presented on one of the most carefully made cast medallions. On its other side it was recognized St. Nicholas. On the next medal, the figure of St. Francis of Paola was identified. St. Francis of Assisi appears on a very poorly legible paper picture. On the medal lion we can see St. Wojciech. On its other side there is a figure of the Guardian Angel holding the child by a hand. Burning Hearts are presented on a cast medal, on the other side of the medal with St. Wojciech. The most popular were the medallions with images of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The Polish images of the Mother of God should be taken in account, first of all, Madonna of Jasna Góra from Częstochowa. On the medallions and crosses except the characters, there are legends – inscriptions, only in Latin, made them by majuskuła with sheriffs. Most often, the medallions were „signed” by the name of the saint. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, they were gladly supplied with medallions with the patrons of good death. In determining the chronology of devotional items from the church cemetery at the church of Saint Barbara, a wide chronological framework was adopted, corresponding to the period of use of the cemetery and the church, from the 17th century to probably the beginning of the 19th century. Częstochowa was the center of worship of Our Lady of Jasna Góra. It can be assumed that most of the medallions with images of the Virgin of Częstochowa, and perhaps even all of them, were probably created in Częstochowa.

Opis:
For ages, the cross has been a feature of the Polish cultural landscape. It has functioned as a guardian of the sacred sphere and a national totem. The cross is also a landmark, often erected at intersections of composition axes. It highlights the role of road junctions. A roadside cross is clearly visible in the landscape, even from a long distance, and serves as a mystic entry to the sacred sphere. The cross is an object of religious cult and a place where people pray. It can commemorate pilgrimages, road accidents or important historic events (for example, the Smolensk cross in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw). Sometimes, a cross is ‘a home guardian’. It is also a distinguishing feature of the region’s confession and religion. It can be made of wood, stone, iron or other materials. Mounted and adorned by a local community, it becomes an object that people own and take pride in. This article is a presentation of the cross as a motif in the contemporary cultural landscape of Poland, in the sacral, landscape and social context.
