Subject and purpose of work: The main goal is to offer more productive approach to security culture: viewing culture as a logical system which can be understood using theories and principles developed. Materials and methods: Cultural security issue collaborative research and discovery of literature to fully exploit social networks and open source material. Results: Cultural security issue analyzes the hard and soft power of antiquities, artworks, religious monuments, and historic structures as indicators of the political economy of cultural property. Conclusions. Analyses of the political significance of historic structures and religious monuments and the licit and illicit global market for antiquities and artworks provide insights into the strategic role of cultural property in diplomacy and international security. Integrating operational cultural principles into the specific conditions is the future and will bring depth to touchstones such as “no better friend, no worse enemy,” and “first, do no harm”.
Subject and purpose of work: Głównym celem pracy jest zaproponowanie bardziej efektywnego podejścia do kultury bezpieczeństwa: postrzegania kultury jako logicznego systemu, który można zrozumieć za pomocą opracowanych teorii i zasad. Materiały i metody: Badania nad bezpieczeństwem kulturowym realizowane w ramach współpracy oraz przegląd literatury, aby w pełni wykorzystać sieci społecznościowe i publiczne materiały źródłowe. Wyniki: Bezpieczeństwo kulturowe analizuje twardą i miękką siłę antyków, dzieł sztuki, zabytków sakralnych i budowli historycznych jako wskaźników ekonomii politycznej dóbr kultury. Wnioski: Analizy politycznego znaczenia budowli historycznych i zabytków religijnych oraz legalnego i nielegalnego globalnego rynku antyków i dzieł sztuki umożliwiają wgląd w strategiczną rolę dóbr kultury w dyplomacji i bezpieczeństwie międzynarodowym. Włączenie operacyjnych zasad kulturowych w określone warunki to kwestia przyszłości, która nada również głębszy wyraz takim fundamentalnym zasadom, jak „nie ma lepszego przyjaciela, ani gorszego wroga” oraz „po pierwsze, nie szkodzić”.

The purpose of this study was to compare the attitude of Iranian and non-Iranian English language students’ attitudes towards Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Furthermore, the relations of gender, education level, and age to their attitude are investigated. A convergent mixed methods design was used for analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data. In the data collection procedure, an online 44-item web-based questionnaire was applied in order to collect data from 415 students. In the data analysis phase, both descriptive and non-parametric analyses were performed. The findings of the study revealed that there is no difference between the attitudes of Iranian and non-Iranian towards CALL. Finally, pedagogical implications and recommendations for further research are presented.

This article is an example of the practical application of natural video recordings to qualitative research. It describes the videographic method in relation to an ongoing project concerned with forms of knowledge communication within the field of migration. In this field, our visual approach provides a novel perspective on the well-known questions of cross-cultural communication and integration. Firstly, I want to discuss Videography and Genre Analysis in the form of an iterative, audiovisual data collection procedure and define the process of sequence selection and interpretation. Secondly, I will demonstrate how communicative structures are analyzed at different levels of Genre Analysis through the minute analysis of a short audiovisual data sequence from a roadshow that took place during a Latin American theme week. As well as detailing the process of gathering information on a situational level, I want to demonstrate the potential of the analysis to gather information about the structural environment on a transsituational level. Through this discussion, I will also outline the importance of additional contextual information that – by means of further ethnographic research – could be uncovered in our fieldwork.

North Cameroon displays nearly sixty local languages for an estimated 3,500,000 people. Such a multilingualism is offset by the use of a major trade language, Fulfulde or Fula (spoken by Fulɓe or Fulani), which allows basic exchanges to take place in many settings. Owing to increased rates of school attendance, French has been taking on a greater but still limited role in interethnic communication. The question of language comes immediately to the fore in any medical consultation, yet there are also prior cultural factors in play which have a strong impact on the procedure.

According to recent cross-cultural studies there exist culturally based differences between visual perception and the related cognitive processes (attention, memory). According to current research, East Asians and Westerners percieve and think about the world in very different ways. Westerners are inclined to attend to some focal object (a salient object within a perception field that is relatively big in size, fast moving, colourful) focusing on and analyzing its attributes. East Asians on the other hand are more likely to attend to a broad perceptual field, noticing relationships and changes. In this paper we want to describe the recent findings in the field and propose some directions for future research.

The main aim of our investigation is a cognitive interdependence to metacognitive self. Metacognitive self construct as a new one is considered. Three studies are presented: first two as evidence for monitoring effect of metacognitive self, and the last one – as cross-cultural study. The latter is devoted to the role of metacognitive self in affect regulation. Studies showed that metacognitive self may be responsible for persistence in cognitive load conditions, and metacognitive self may serve as a protector against certain symptoms of depression.

This paper focuses on the problem of cultural differences with respect to legal terms translation concerning the extradition procedure between Germany and Poland. In this context, the question as to how to tailor German legal terminology referring to institutional and office names to that of the Polish language in order to make the text comprehensible and understandable for Polish readers, e.g., judges, prosecutors or legal representatives, will be considered from a cultural perspective. The study is illustrated by examples from a German prosecutor’s letters to the Polish District Court regarding extradition arrangement.

Muslim religious practices are very often commented in the media by the society of Western Europe. Most of those practices are unacceptable. In present times most Islamic practices are not supported by Europeans and taken as barbarian. For many years governments of EU countries have been trying to stop their progress beyond their borders and fight with them as well. A conservative part of the Muslim society consequently stands on the side of tradition. Some Muslim rituals cannot be adapted in any possible legal way because they are at odds with a liberal character of the policy of relevant countries. Muslims as a big group cannot remain unnoticed. Adaptation of their tradition and culture is justified as well, insofar it has not intruded in the EU countries’ laws. There is still a lot of work to be done to find agreement between the societies of Muslim and autochthonic citizens of Europe.

As the world becomes more and more culturally diverse, an accurate knowledge of the influence of cultural factors on the mental processes of an individual and the construction of social capital become increasingly important for our ability to effectively understand differences in culture. How can we cope with this task in everyday life? What is the relevance of comparative education in this process? One solution could be to create a certain intellectual map of cultural similarities and differences to which we could refer at any time in order to better understand the diversity around us. Such a peculiar encyclopaedia of knowledge about the diversity of the world has not yet been created, and it is unlikely that it will, given the dynamics of social processes, the multiplicity of events and ways of understanding them. Then how can a rational model for dealing with cultural diversity be created? In this article, I want to draw attention to the importance of comparative education in the creation of such a model, taking into account the relatively new position of comparativists recognising that a considerably important role in the process of coping with cultural diversity and difference is played i.a. by dialogic memory.

In 1997, Poland has ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the project of which has been submitted in 1978 (UNICEF). Almost two hundred countries around the world have signed up the Convention, thereby committing themselves to respect the rights of the child in various dimensions of social life. The right to education is one of the fundamental rights of the child. It also concerns foreign children, who, as a result of migration, have settled down in Poland. The number of immigrants is not as high as in the countries that have built their empires on colonialism. Polish literature raising the issue of education and the rights of foreign children to it is not comprehensive and is based on the publications on the rights of children and cross-cultural education. The main aim of the dissertation is to approximate the literature of the subject with attention to their practical use.

This article introduces so-called honour crimes (sometimes termed honour based violence), which tends to occur within Islamic communities located within ‘host’ countries in Europe. It is a very specific type of crime, which takes place in the family setting in Muslim families, and is in direct contradiction with the democratic values and legal systems of Western states. The aim of this paper is to introduce the issue and illustrate it in relation to selected cases. It offers both an evaluative and descriptive stance.

Given the marked presence of humour in many areas of thought and language, as well as in people’s social, emotional, and aesthetic experiences, it comes as no surprise that humour studies are considered an interesting interdiscipline worth studying. This paper is, therefore, an attempt at joining three academic fields, namely advertising discourse, Cultural Linguistics, and humour studies. The author will enquire into the operation of (debatable) humour applied in multimodal advertising discourse. She will make the cultural aspect the focus of attention in order to highlight the role of cross-cultural differences in the perception of humour. Based on her previous studies (Stwora 2020a, 2020b) on attitudinal responses to controversial humorous ads in English, she will join in an exploratory discussion with a view to showing the ways in which ad reception may be influenced by the culture-specific force of humour. Working towards a more comprehensive outlook on humour in use in the context of advertising discourse, the present paper will start with a few words on humour in general and on debatable humour in ads. Then, the cultural side of humour will be discussed. Finally, the author will discuss her research from the cultural standpoint.
