In this survey paper the author critically examines all aspects of factor analysis: the data structure it is intended to describe; the methods of analysis aimed at estimating that structure; and the interpretations placed on the results of the analysis. The first part of the paper deals with the theory underlying the technique. It is shown that, in general, the estimation problem of factor analysis is insoluble.  In particular, if there are p variables, and m factors are to be identified, there are indeterminacies in the model itself unless p is at least 2m+1; even when the condition is satisfied,  the solution is determinate only up to a group of rotations. After a brief discussion of principal component analysis, principal factor analysis is described. It is shown by examples that "principal factor analysis may give factor estimates that bear no relationship whatever to the true values''. Even with maximum likelihood methods, which are briefly described, there are indeterminacies. It is shown with synthetic data that a restriction usually imposed to achieve uniqueness does not necessarily retrieve the originally applied parameters. The situation is further complicated by the rotation of factors to achieve either a simple structure or a psychologically meaningful solution. The second part of the paper describes the testing of factor analysis programs using artificial data. The general conclusion from this practical study is that, while the numerical accuracy of the programs is satisfactory, the results obtained do not correspond to the original structure of the data, but produce "factors'' that were not initially present. The examples also show that, when matrices of estimated loadings are subjected to an orthogonal transformation, "all resemblance to the true loadings disappeared''. The author makes various pungent comments on the findings from this study.    The paper concludes with a short section on the clustering of variables into uncorrelated sets.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is two-fold. The first is to introduce, for any given partition of [R^2], the decomposition of Spearman's rho into three terms: bet~cveen, within and remainder. This decomposition, presented in Section 4, is strictly connected with that of the concentration index ar as introduced in Kowalczyk (1998), and with the decomposition of Kendall's tau as introduced in Kowalczyk and Niewiadomska-Bugaj (2000). Those earlier results are reminded in Sections 2 and 3. The second aim of the paper is to show and exemplify how one can use the decompositions of p* (Spearman's rho) and r (Kendall's tau) to analyse, decompose and compare m x m contingency tables with the same categories for the row variable and the column varable. The examples given in Section 5 concern social mobility tables with data from Britain and Poland. An important observation from the analysis of these data is that p* and r lead there to practically equivalent decompositions.

Opis:
Denecke and Reichel have described a method of studying the lattice of all varieties of a given type by using monoids of hypersubstitutions. In this paper we develop a Galois correspondence between monoids of hypersubstitutions of a given type and lattices of subvarieties of a given variety of that type. We then apply the results obtained to the lattice of varieties of bands (idempotent semigroups), and study the complete sublattices of this lattice obtained through the Galois correspondence.

Opis:
Twardowski's allegorical poems imitate the structure of emblems; sometimes they seem to be completely like a verbal response to an image. The poet does not use abstraction, he does not compose the world of his works of the speculative matter of notions and names – he will always translate them into a visible, concrete thing. His language is exactly the language of translation; often it is relatively simple: he names what the eye can see, he makes the allegorical picture move by the dynamics of verbal presentation: the description of the action, accumulation of the presented details. Twardowski's poems, if their connections are shown (as can be seen e.g. in the contemporary edition of Łódź młodzi?) with emblems, extraordinary popular and dynamically spreading at the beginning of the 17th century, reveal important networks of relations that connect them to exactly this domain of art., they reveal their own representational dimension. Verbal references to the sight that are really numerous in the works of the author of Pochodnia project a certain type of recipient: they stress visibility, they underline the fact that the text with which we are dealing imitates the image. Twardowski does re-coding of three kinds. The first level of such a translation from image to language is a plain description of the picture; an iconographic description. The second level is adding a plot to the icon; rendering the virtual character of the presentation in writing, which is the amplification strategy. And finally, the third level would be separating the poetic image from the visual imagination and moving the very visibility into the language. The verbal construction of the metaphor – that is the third level. A highly relational character of this poetry, and particularly the mutual penetration of the work and allegorical images taking place in the space of Twardowski's texts (especially when the poems are not collections of emblems) are the cause why in the research procedure the intertextual approach seems to be the best one.

Wśród spuścizny Józefa Czechowicza odnajdujemy, obok rękopisów czy rzeczy osobistych, także rysunki poety. Zachowało się ich dwadzieścia pięć z lat 1925-1929. Przechowywane w kilku miejscach do dziś nie wzbudziły zainteresowania i nie zostały opracowane. Wykonywane najczęściej piórem i atramentem pojawiają się na rękopisach utworów, towarzyszą korespondencji poety, są pracami egzaminacyjnymi, lub występują niezależnie. Najliczniejszą grupę stanowią ilustracje wierszy. Zachodzi w nich bardzo ścisły, a zarazem prosty związek między tekstem a elementem graficznym, który nawiązuje do treści lub stylistyki wiersza. Ilustrowane są bądź poszczególne strofki bądź cały wiersz. Drugą ciekawą grupą są rysunki z korespondencji poety. Wśród nich na uwagę zasługują zwłaszcza własnoręcznie wykonane przez Czechowicza karty pocztowe. Interesujące są też szkice związane z pedagogiczną pracą poety. Rysunki poety cechuje wyrobiony zmysł plastyczny swoboda linii, prawidłowość proporcji, dobra kompozycja pewna finezja i humor. Mówią one dużo o Czechowiczu poecie i człowieku. Mogą stanowić ciekawe zarzewie badań nad autoilustracją w literaturze.
Among Józef Czechowicz’s works besides manuscripts and personal belongings we also find the poet’s drawings. Twenty-five ones dating from 1925-1929 have been preserved. Kept in a few different places they have not raised any interest and have not been studied yet. Most often made with pen and ink, they appear in the manuscripts of his literary works, they accompany his correspondence, they are examination theses, or they appear independently of any other works. Illustrations of poems constitute the most numerous group. A close, and at the same time simple connection between the text and the graphic element occurs in them that refers to the content or the style of the poem. Either the whole poem or particular stanzas are illustrated. Another interesting group is made up by the poet’s drawings included in his correspondence. Especially postcards made by Czechowicz himself deserve attention. Also sketches connected with the poet’s pedagogic work are interesting. The poet’s drawings are characterized by good visual taste, ease of the line, good proportions and compositions, a certain fineness and humor. They tell a lot about Czechowicz as a poet and as a man. They may be an interesting starting point for studies on self-illustration in literature.

Philosophers are mainly focused on the epistemological concept of truth. However, if we want to maintain this concept in the classical version (correspondence one) we have to assume at least some minimal ontology (metaphysics), and hence some ontological (metaphysical) concept of truth. Items I. and II. are an attempt at explicating this ontology in the context of Aristotle’s and Tarski’s conceptions, and item IV. is (in discussion with P. Horwich and D. Lewis) taking an attitude towards contemporary challenges that deflationism brings to them. It seems that today one may defend the correspondence conception of truth and its ontological assumptions, that boil down to stating a certain form of the world’s “rationality”.
