The purpose of the report is to determine trends in thermal conditions in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. The results of studies were compared with the results of analogous analyses, carried out for the area of lowland Poland. The study makes use of the data from the weather stations in Zakopane and on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 19512006, mainly from 1966-2006. The thermal conditions in lowland Poland was determined on the basis of the area-averaged time series (45 stations). Various thermal characteristics were considered. The increase of the rate of upward trend in temperature at the turn of the 21st century, as well as the change of the seasonal distribution of the warming in comparison with the preceding long-term periods, have been documented. Symptoms of increase of the thermal continentality have also been observed.

This paper is an attempt to reconsider the first years of systemic transformations in Poland, or, more precisely, the course of events during democratisation process going on in 1989, and the fundamental problems of the consolidation of democracy in the following years. In a comparative analysis referring to categories used by Samuel P. Huntington in his book: The Third Wave. Democratization in the Late Twentieth Century, it presents the consequences of the fact that democratisation in Poland was achieved by ‘transplacement’ – joint actions of the government and the opposition, manifested in particular at the Round Table talks. Further the main dilemmas of subsequent years are analysed. These include: the economic and social issues, the problem of the accountability for the past, and the question of how to deal with the praetorians of the former regime. Changes in the social perception of the early transformation period are also described.
Artykuł jest próbą analizy pierwszych lat transformacji systemowej w Polsce, tzn. przebiegu procesu demokratyzacji w 1989 r. oraz podstawowych problemów konsolidacji demokracji w Polsce w kilku latach następnych. Jest to analiza porównawcza wykorzystująca kategorie stosowane przez S. Huntingtona w książce Trzecia fala demokratyzacji. Artykuł przedstawia konsekwencje faktu, że proces demokratyzacji dokonał się w Polsce poprzez „przemieszczenie”, tzn. wspólne działania rządu i przedstawicieli opozycji, czego wyrazem był zwłaszcza obrady Okrągłego Stołu. Analizuje najistotniejsze dylematy następnych lat, a więc problemy gospodarcze i socjalne, „problem kata” (tzn. kwestię rozliczenia przeszłości) oraz „problem pretorianina” (tzn. sposób traktowania przedstawicieli poprzednich resortów siłowych). Opisuje także zmiany społecznego postrzegania wydarzeń z owych lat.

This article aims to provide a comparative analysis of the social condition of actors during the communist era in Poland and after the political transformation of 1989. The empirical material used by the author includes popular science publications devoted to actors of Polish public drama theatres as well as free-flowing interviews conducted by the author in 2015–2017 with theatre artists representing six Polish theatrical centres. Actors who remember the period of the People’s Republic of Poland well are nostalgic about the past theatrical life, they remember being on familiar terms within theatre teams, anti-rankism, and the inclusion of technical and administrative staff in the community of artists without emphasising hierarchies. Today, the social, ideological and political divides in theatre teams are more noticeable. Distinguished actors are being challenged by young colleagues, while they were held in high regard in the past. Nowadays, multi-active actors demythologise the profession of an actor and point to the decline of the professional ethos.
Celem artykułu jest analiza porównawcza kondycji społecznej aktorów w okresie PRL-u i po transformacji ustrojowej 1989 roku. Materiałem empirycznym, jaki wykorzystuje Autorka, są publikacje popularnonaukowe poświęcone aktorom polskich publicznych teatrów dramatycznych i przeprowadzone przez nią – w latach 2015–2017 – wywiady swobodne z twórcami teatralnymi, reprezentującymi sześć polskich ośrodków teatralnych. Aktorzy, którzy dobrze pamiętają okres PRL-u, z nostalgią wspominają miniony czas w życiu teatralnym, pamiętają familiarne stosunki w zespołach, antyrankizm, włączanie pracowników technicznych i administracyjnych do wspólnoty twórców, bez podkreślania jakiejkolwiek hierarchii. Współcześnie podziały społeczne, ideologiczne i polityczne w zespołach są bardziej widoczne. Młodzi aktorzy częściej kwestionują autorytety, w minionej epoce zasłużeni aktorzy darzeni byli wielkim szacunkiem. Współcześnie multiaktywni aktorzy demitologizują profesję aktorską, zwracają uwagę na upadek zawodowego etosu.

In the article we consider the relationship between the poor condition of material remains of the Great War on one of the former Eastern Front’s battlefield’s in the Rawka and Bzura region with the long term attitudes of the local population towards the soldiers of Russian and German armies, fighting and killed there. For this purpose, we have analyzed written sources and witnesses accounts, as well asartifacts from archaeological research. We assume that recognizing situation of the local population during the events of 1914–1915 and after the war may bring us closer to answering the questions posed herein. Thus, we suppose, that loss of property, extremely difficult conditions of everyday life, illnesses and suffering, fear of military authorities and soldiers, of epidemic factors and infectious diseases, death of lovedones also those enlisted in the armies of the occupiers – these types of traumatic experiences – conditioned the attitude of the local population towards soldiers of the Great War. Some lasting consequences of this can be observed till today – in the form of fading traces of the material heritage of the Great War. Focusing on the material and discursive dimensions, we analyze the relationships between the primary (res gestae) and consequential/secondary processes (rerum gestarum histories and narrations) and observe a kind of causative “breaking the continuity” between them. Using the methods of historical archaeology, archaeology of recent past, memory studies, history etc., creates interesting, but so far poorly used, research possibilities. Most importantly, it can contribute to shaping attitudes characterized by historical and archaeological sensitivity and the will to understand the value of a difficult heritage (including resting places of fallen soldiers) and to prompt active care for it.

The presented study aims to describe the outdoor movie project called ‘Light-Sensitive Poland’ [Pol. ‘Polska Światłoczuła’] in two perspectives – functional and interactive. During the qualitative field research, the author tried to find out what motivations drive the different sides of the project. The sociological study is based on scientific and statistical sources as well as on the material collected in the period 2012–2014 during the six touring cinema routes in Poland within the ‘Light-Sensitive Poland’ project. The specific objective is to attempt to include the author’s own sociological observations made during the fieldwork in the broader context of the traveling cinema phenomenon. The collected materials provided an opportunity to sketch the socio-cultural atmosphere of meetings between the audience and the works and their creators, in particular the expectations and motivation of both the creators and recipients. The article refers to the author’s own ordinary and participatory observations (both open and hidden). The article used 50 ordinary observations from the screening and from the meetings with the audience (conversations with the audience after the screening and about 100 short recorded conversations with the audience about the movie impressions and motivation to participate in the screening), as well as the insider experience from several dozen days in touring cinemas. The research is not representative of the overall audience of the screenings during the six tours. The author does not discuss the results of the research on the reception of contemporary Polish movies (discussion after screenings), but, rather, focuses on the institutional and interactive approach to mobile cinema.
Prezentowane studium ma na celu opisanie plenerowego projektu filmowego „Polska Światłoczuła” w dwóch perspektywach – funkcjonalnej i interakcyjnej. W trakcie jakościowych badań terenowych autorka próbowała dociec, jakie motywacje kierują różnymi stronami projektu. Socjologiczne studium opiera się o źródła zastane: naukowe i statystyczne oraz o materiał zebrany w okresie 2012–2014 w trakcie sześciu tras kina objazdowego w Polsce w ramach projektu „Polska Światłoczuła”. Cel szczegółowy stanowi próba ujęcia własnych obserwacji socjologicznych, czynionych w trakcie badań terenowych, w szerszym kontekście, jakim jest fenomen kina objazdowego. Zebrane materiały dały możliwość naszkicowania społeczno-kulturowej atmosfery spotkań widzów z dziełami i ich twórcami, w szczególności oczekiwań, motywacji twórców i odbiorców. W artykule odwołano się do własnych obserwacji zwykłych oraz uczestniczących (jawnych i ukrytych). Wykorzystanych zostało 50 obserwacji zwykłych z projekcji oraz ze spotkań z publicznością (rozmowy z publicznością po seansie oraz około stu krótkich, nagrywanych rozmów z widzami na temat wrażeń filmowych oraz motywacji do uczestnictwa w seansie), a także doświadczenia (insidera) z kilkudziesięciu dni w trasach z kinem objazdowym. Badania nie są reprezentatywne odnośnie do całościowej publiki seansów w trakcie sześciu tras. Autorka nie omawia rezultatów badań dotyczących recepcji współczesnych polskich filmów (dyskusje grupowe po projekcji), lecz skupia się na ujęciu instytucjonalnym i interakcyjnym kina ruchomego.

This article, written from an anthropological perspective and based on extended personal fieldwork by the author, consists of a detailed discussion of two places of Holocaust memory in present-day Poland: the memorial museum at Auschwitz and selected Jewish sites in the city of Kraków. The principal argument is that both the Auschwitz museum and Jewish Kraków have meanings which are multi-layered and multi-dimensional. For example, Auschwitz means different things to different people; some of those meanings are particularist (relating to the histories of different victim groups), some are universal. Similarly, the character of Jewish Kraków is understood not only in relation to the physical presence of a former Jewish quarter (now substantially restored), but also in relation to the overpowering awareness of ruin and the absence of Jews. The investigation and analysis of common interpretations of these two places reveal that they rest on numerous contradictions and paradoxes; the real and the imagined, usually understood as polar opposites, may in fact coexist in people’s minds. In a sense it can be described as a ‘chorus of voices’, all of which need to be heard and acknowledged. But these voices are not always in harmony; on the contrary, what often comes across is dissonance or cacophony. In other words, there is no fixed interpretative scheme, no unified or stable approach. Nor, perhaps, should there be, in approaching something so totally subversive as genocide. The job of the scholar, in representing and problematizing how people make sense of the Holocaust in such contexts, thus requires the recognition of ethnographic inconsistencies and uncertainties, and in consequence to challenge preconceptions, mystifications, stereotypes, and simplifications.

The article is an attempt to find relations between geology and the dynamics of the Mesozoic surface of the Łódź Synclinorium, the Radomsko Elevation and the Bełchatów Graben and the present relief on the border of the Polish Lowlands and Uplands in its central part. Fossil relief has been compared with the present one as related to the extent of the recession phases of the Saalian (Wartanian) ice-sheet. A significant convergence has been found between the Mesozoic surface plain and the main morphologic elements. The role of elevations and fossil valleys has been stressed as stable forms in the pre-Pleistocene and contemporary landscape. Also stressed has been the meaning of grabens and elevations enforcing longer stoppages of the Wartanian stadial of the Middle Polish Glaciations.

Author tells the story of his close and very long-lasting acquaintance with Leszek Kołakowski as well as commentates on his intellectual biography and achievements as political and literary essayist, philosopher, historian of ideas, and public figure. In particular he describes in details the first half of Kołakowski’s life, namely the period when he made his long journey from being communist in his student years to becoming as a young scholar the leading figure of Marxist revisionism in the late fifties and after a time a principled critic of Marxism itself and a fervent anti-communist. In many respects Kołakowski’s itinerary was not exceptional but it had at least two noteworthy characteristics. First, in opposition to quite a few other cases his way away from communism turned out to be scholarly fruitful as it resulted in an uniquely in-depth historical research covering the founders, the golden age and the breakdown of so called “scientific socialism” (his voluminous work Main Currents of Marxism remains one of the best and the most comprehensive monographs of the topic). Second, Kołakowski’s abandoning of his former Weltanschauung was followed by his discovery of religion as an extremely important part of human experience and sine qua non condition of the survival of civilization permanently menaced by barbarians. However it is to be doubt whether he may be considered as a convert or a religious thinker in the strict sense of the word since he believed in horrors of the absence of God rather than in the real presence of his in the world. As defender of transcendence and tradition Kołakowski certainly became a kind of catholic-Christian without denomination but as a critical philosopher remained at the same time highly sceptical about everything. Dreaming of solid fundamentals he was all his life an uncompromising enemy of any fundamentalism. Being nostalgic about the Absolute he was incurable antiabsolutist.

Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na problem określenia charakteru prawnego wymogu czasowego dla potencjalnych Zabytków Historycznych. Większość artykułów, które odnosiły się do tego zagadnienia, postulowała określenie stylowej / technicznej aktualności obiektu opartej na "dowodzeniu historii", podczas gdy inne sugerowały brak podstaw do oddzielenia horyzontu czasowego od potencjalnego zabytku. Wychodząc poza te zagadnienia, niniejszy artykuł przedstawia analizę prawnej definicji Zabytków w połączeniu z definicją współczesnych dóbr kultury podaną w Ustawie o zagospodarowaniu przestrzennym. Analiza porównawcza tych definicji prawnych prowadzi do założenia, że ustawodawca podał alternatywną, bardziej jednoznaczną podstawę do oceny, czy przedmiot jest wystarczająco stary, aby można go było umieścić w rejestrze zabytków.
The aim of the article is to answer the problem of determining the nature of the legal requirement of temporal remoteness put upon potential Historic Monuments. Most of the papers that referred to the issue offered an understanding relying on determining stylistic/technical topicality of a property relying on the phrase „an evidence of a past period”, whereas some others suggested that there is no basis for expecting a temporal remoteness from a potential Historic Monument. Going beyond those commentaries this paper presents an analysis of the legal definition of Historic Monuments in conjuction with the definition of Contemporary Cultural Goods given in the Land-use Planning Act. A comparative analysis of those legal definitions leads to assuption that the legislator gave an alternative and more unequivocal basis for appraising whether a property is old enough to be listed on the Historic Monuments Register, which is to investigate whether the property is an achievement of a late generation.

Na łamach „Gazety Wyborczej” w latach 1989–2019 zamieszczano artykuły przeglądowe, recenzje, reportaże, felietony i wzmianki, poświęcone rozmaitym aspektom życia kulturalnego w Czechach, szczególnie zaś współczesnej literaturze. Odnosiły się one zarówno do poszczególnych autorów, jak i miejsc oraz kwestii ideowych, powiązanych z literaturą czeską. Najwięcej pisano o twórczości tych autorów czeskich, którzy byli popularni i nagradzani, jak Hrabal, Kundera, Ota Pavel, Hašek, Havel, Čapek, Škvorecký. Popularyzowano także mniej znanych czeskich twórców literackich, jak Michal Viewegh, Irena Obermannova, Jachym Topol.

Opis:
The article presents the state of research and prospects for further development of Polish cultural studies towards the end of the 2010s. Occasionally accused of being stagnant or non-specific, the discipline is analyzed through the category of vitality. By applying it, the author attempts to provide a synthetic reconstruction of the panorama of Polish cultural studies. It is not only dense and diverse, but it also seems to have a guaranteed future. Polish cultural studies defends itself in the social field of relations in which contemporary researchers operate.

This essay is a review based on material from nineteen published interviews that focused on a diagnosis of Polish conditions after a year of the Law and Justice [Prawo i Sprawiedliwość] party’s rule. The interviews were conducted with experts—academics and journalists—by Michał Sutowski, who published these interviews as a collection.  The author demonstrates that such a collective diagnosis has major advantages in Poland’s current, rapidly changing, social conditions. Such a method is quicker than the scholarly approach to describing and explaining the state of affairs. The collection of interviews could also be a valuable source of inspiration for public debates and scholarly research in many areas, and could contain guidelines for decision-makers.

The paper presents contemporary tendencies which can be seen in Polish monumental public sculpture of last three decades. They are connected with Polish history and especially new forms of historical policy, presenting problems avoided by official historiography of Poland before 1989. The monumental public sculpture has some features that can be easily noticed, like exaggeration, excess, and weakness of forms, as well as focusing on matters being result of martyrological shape of Polish memory.

The purpose of this article is to briefly analyze specific legal norms: “general reference clauses” – in view of the Polish contemporary constitutional law. These norms are expressed in legal texts but they refer to extra-legal values and are “opened” for them. Considerations are focused here on the selected regulations of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland of April 2, 1997 and selected rulings of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal.
Celem tego artykułu jest syntetyczna analiza specyficznych norm prawnych: „generalnych klauzul odsyłających” – w świetle współczesnego polskiego prawa konstytucyjnego. Wskazane normy zostały wyrażone w formalnie obowiązujących konstytucyjnych przepisach prawnych, ale ich normatywna treść odnosi się w istocie do pozaprawnych wartości, wynikających z otwartego charakteru tych przepisów. Rozważania w opracowaniu skupiają się głównie wokół wybranych regulacji Konstytucji Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej z dnia 2 kwietnia 1997 r. oraz wybranych orzeczeń polskiego Trybunału Konstytucyjnego.

Opis:
Musical theatre in Poland entered a new stage in its history after 1989. Being forced to exist in a new economical situation, it had to develop a new organization model, different from the one it was using for last 45 years. Managing directors of such theatres as Musical Thea-tre in Gdynia, Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw or Musical Theatre in Wrocław reformed their institutions, introducing strategies present in the Western theatrical world, for example castings for performers, giving up permanent theatrical groups etc. In theatres in Gdynia, Warsaw and in Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów many Polish premieres of worldwide known musicals took place. Artistic and technical quality of Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw reached the levels of European theatres of that type. Theatre in Wrocław, that has changed its name into Musical Theatre Capitol, became the leading centre of sophisticated musical theatre. Wojciech Kościelniak, connected with theatres in Gdynia and Wrocław, has directed many new and original musicals, based usually on outstanding literary works. Kościelniak is one of the most interesting personalities of contemporary Polish musical theatre.
