    After years of treating Doctor John H. Watson as a faithful but not-that-clever friend and chronicler of Sherlock Holmes, recent revisions finally offer a character closer to Doyle’s version. Since each reworking of the great detective calls for a reworking of the diarist doctor, this paper aims to analyse contemporary Watson’s counterparts – literary: Carole Nelson Douglas’s Irene Adler has her Penelope Huxleigh, Neil Gaiman’s consulting detective his “S_ M_,” and cinematic: Gregory House has his James Wilson, and the Whitechapel DI Chandler his Edward Buchan. Each rewriting retains some features of the canonical sidekick through which the new character reflects on the original.

    This study explores the theme of intertextuality and adaptation between literature and film on the basis of Sherlock Holmes, the 19th/20th-century character conceived by Arthur Conan Doyle. It shows how the character has been adapted from literature into the cinematic domain on the basis of three modern TV series, including Dr. House (Heel & Toe Films/Fox, 2004), Sherlock (Hartswood Films/BBC, 2010), and Elementary (Hill of Beans/CBS, 2012). Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in 1887, was originally featured in four novels and 56 short stories. However, since that time Holmes has been adapted for over 240 movies exploiting enormous popularity of this character in a variety of settings. The paper analyzes prototypical, basic features of Sherlock Holmes underlying its intertextual adaptability. As discussed in this study, there are four prototypical features of Sherlock Holmes, i.e. (1) outstanding powers of perception combined with intellect; (2) unconventionality in social behaviour; (3) helpful partner; and (4) ability to use scientific achievements. The paper demonstrates that Sherlock Holmes conceptualized in such a basic manner can act as successfully in modern cinematic productions as it did in late 19th-century literature.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza postaci Conana Edogawy, protagonisty komiksowego cyklu Meitantei Conan autorstwa Gōshō Aoyamy jako wariacji na temat superbohatera. Materiał badawczy, oprócz mangi, stanowią serial animowany będący jej adaptacją oraz powiązane z nim filmy kinowe. Źródło inspiracji dla japońskiego artysty stanowi szeroko pojęta literatura kryminalna, a zwłaszcza opowiadania o Sherlocku Holmesie autorstwa Artura Conana Doyle’a. Analiza zebranego materiału wykazała, że opisywana franczyza ma charakter narracji transmedialnej. Ponadto Aoyama, jak również twórcy animowanych adaptacji komiksu Meitantei Conan, posługuje się transfikcjonalnością. Japoński artysta dzięki połączeniu elementów kryminalnych z superbohaterskimi oraz częściowemu ich sparodiowaniu, stworzył postać „omnipotentnego”, wszechwiedzącego detektywa-superherosa, który jest w stanie rozwiązać każdą zagadkę.
    The aim of this paper is a character analysis of Conan Edogawa – the protagonist of Meitantei Conan by Gōshō Aoyama – as a variation of the superhero. The research material includes manga, animated series adaptation and related cinematic films. The broadly understood criminal novel (mostly the Sherlock Holmes cycle by Arthur Conan Doyle) was the source of inspiration for the Japanese artist. The analysis of the collected material demonstrates that the described franchise used a transmedia narration. Both Aoyama and the authors of animated adaptations use transfictionality in their works. With the combined usage of the criminal and superhero elements, the Japanese artist created an omnipotent and omniscient superhero detective who can solve any mystery.

    Historia literatury, podobnie jak ludzka pamięć, bywa tak wybiórcza, jak i zawodna, co oznacza, że w mroku niepamięci znika wielu twórców każdej epoki. Zadaniem badacza bywa przywracanie pamięci o tych, których twórczość uzna za wartościową lub na tyle ciekawą, aby zechcieć się nad postacią pisarza pochylić. Niniejszy tekst traktuje o Jerzym Siewierskim, mocno zapomnianym pisarzu powojennej Polski i cichym współtwórcy sztandarowego czasopisma „Współczesność”, a jego celem jest próba odtworzenia biografii warszawskiego literata. Ta praca nad przywracaniem Siewierskiego odbywa się za pomocą metod bliskich czytelnikom powieści kryminalnych – wszak z nich przede wszystkim zasłynął w PRL sam pisarz. Badane są więc ślady archiwalne, a więc ślady, które sam twórca po sobie pozostawił oraz te, które pozostały po nim bez udziału jego woli. Równolegle do badań nad archiwaliami toczą się „przesłuchania” świadków, czyli osób, które Siewierskiego znały i pamiętają, zwłaszcza zaś rozmowy z jego najbliższymi. Z rozmów tych wyłania się postać przewrotna, inteligenta, a zarazem ciekawa – jednocześnie znacząca i pozostająca w cieniu wielkich rewolt. Co ciekawe, pewne elementy autokreacji pisarza pozwalają szukać subtelnych konotacji z ojcem powieści detektywistycznej, czyli Arthurem Conanem Doylem. Poczynione obserwacje wydają się o tyle interesujące i wartościowe dla badań literackich, że Jerzemu Siewierskiemu nie poświęcono dotąd żadnego pełnego opracowania, a większość informacji o pisarzu pochodzi z rodzinnych archiwów Siewierskich, rozmów z jego bliskimi oraz pozostawionych przez pisarza pamiątek.
    The history of literature, like human memory, can be as selective as itis unreliable, which means that many authors of every epoch disappear into thedarkness of oblivion. A researcher’s task is to restore the memory of those whoseworks he or she finds valuable or interesting enough to want to study. The presenttext deals with Jerzy Siewierski, a largely forgotten writer of post-war Poland anda silent co-founder of the flagship magazine “Współczesność,” in an attempt toreconstruct the biography of the Warsaw-based writer.This work on restoring Siewierski is carried out using methods close to those usedby readers of detective novels – after all, the writer himself became famous forthem in communist Poland. Thus, we study archival traces, i.e. the traces left bythe author himself as well as those that were left by him without his will. Parallelto the archival research, witnesses so people who knew Siewierski and rememberhim, are being “interviewed”.What emerges from these interviews is a perverse, intelligent, and interesting figure,both significant and in the shadow of the great revolutions. Interestingly, certainelements of the writer’s self-creation allow us to look for subtle connotations withthe father of the detective novel, Arthur Conan DoyleThese observations are allthe more interesting and valuable for literary research because no comprehensivestudy of Jerzy Siewierski has been written before, and most information about himcomes from the Siewierski family archives, conversations with his relatives, andmemorabilia left by the writer.

    The plot and the presented world of Robert Ervin Howard’s Beyond the Black River are representative of sword and sorcery, a subgenre of fantasy fiction that Howard is claimed to have pioneered. It has been proposed that the worlds in fantasy fiction are coherently organised, natural, and material. Nevertheless, supernatural elements that are not consis-tent with the structure of the universe are present. The struggle between the structured worlds and the chaotic supernatural that is resolved by an intervention of a barbarian hero constitute the essence of the sword and sorcery subgenre. These elements can also be found in Beyond the Black River by Howard, who employs contrastive images to present the super-natural.

    Opis:
    This study evaluates the movement of a frame built on soft soil under seismic excitation taking into account soil-structure interaction. First, the study was evaluated using the finite element method, then, by using a substructure method which modelled the soil using springs and dampers in a linear and nonlinear study. Rheological models were determined using impedance functions, calculated using a numerical program CONAN. These dynamic impedances are shown in the displacement vector of a three-degrees-of-freedom frame, which was calculated on the basis of lateral forces distributed over the structure height using the equivalent static method. In this regard, two different calculation norms were chosen; RPA2003 and UBC97. Finally, a parametric study was carried out, based on the effects of soil densification and the foundation geometry on the response of the RC frame.
