Opis:
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness and ability of water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes Mart. Solm) in reducing the COD and BOD levels in petroleum liquid waste. Petroleum liquid waste is one type of waste that pollutes the environment if it is not treated first. In this study, the biological treatment techniques were carried out using the phytoremediation techniques. Phytoremediation is an effort to reduce and improve the quality of waste by using plant agents so that the levels of pollutants contained in the waste can be reduced. The phytoremediation techniques are carried out using a simple bioreactor with various concentrations of petroleum liquid waste, namely control (0% waste), 10% waste, 20% waste, and 30% waste. The results of this study showed that the water hyacinth plant was able to tolerate liquid petroleum waste, which was indicated by the water hyacinth plant being able to survive up to a concentration of 30% for approximately 2 months. On the basis of the measurement of BOD and COD of petroleum liquid waste before phytoremediation was carried out, it was 20 mg/l and 10.04 mg/l, respectively. At 10% effluent concentration, the BOD and COD values decreased to 4.11 mg/l and 14.7 mg/l, respectively. At 20% effluent concentration, the BOD and COD values also showed a decrease to 3.73 mg/l and 9.14 mg/l, respectively. At 30% effluent concentration, the BOD and COD values showed a decrease to 3.73 mg/l and 1.22 mg/l, respectively. The ability of the water hyacinth plant to reduce the BOD and COD values can show its effectiveness to be used as a phytoremediation agent for petroleum waste.

Opis:
The purpose of the presented research work was to find out COD fractions in raw wastewater and during treatment with constructed wetland (CW) system. The tests were performed in CW system with average flow of about 4 m3/day. In raw wastewater the highest concentration of fraction in organic suspended solid easy biodegradable (XS – 250 mg O2/l) was observed. The same situation was with dissolved organic easy biodegradable matter (SS – 250 mg O2/l). Lower quantity of non-biodegradable fractions dissolved and in suspended solids were observed (SI – 27 mg O2/l, XI – 83.33 mg O2/l). More than 80% of total COD was as biodegradable fractions (SS + X). After treatment with CW system the highest concentration was observed for dissolved non biodegradable fraction (SI – 27 mg O2/l). Lower concentration was for biodegradable fraction in suspended solid (XS – 3.33 mg O2/l). More than 89% of total COD was in biological non-biodegradable fraction (SI + XI).

Opis:
The effects of persulfate (PS), peroxide activated persulfate (P-PS) and permanganate (PM) oxidation processes on leachate nanofiltration (NF) concentrate treatment have been activated. Additionally, COD fractions were determined and compared before and after each oxidation process. The total COD removal efficiencies by the oxidation processes using PS, P-PS, and PM as the oxidants were determined to be 24.5%, 32.9%, and 39.5%, respectively. The biodegradable COD fraction increased from 6.37% to 9.25%, 11.51%, and 13.64% after the PS, P-PS, and PM oxidation processes, respectively. About 25%, 34%, and 46% removal efficiencies of the inert COD content of the concentrate were obtained after the PS, P-PS and PM oxidation processes, and the soluble COD fraction increased from 71.1% to 87.2%, 89.0% and 84.6% by the PS, P-PS and PM oxidation processes, respectively. Although the highest removal efficiencies were achieved by PM oxidation with the lowest operational cost, all of the processes may be suggested as efficient methods for conversion of insoluble COD into the soluble COD fraction and for inert COD removal. The results of the study showed that the PS, P-PS, and PM oxidation processes may be effectively utilized as post-treatment techniques for leachate NF concentrate treatment.

Opis:
Biofilter technology for wastewater treatment is relatively complex and is gaining more interest. However, it should be emphasised that various aerobic conditions may occur in biological filter beds, which depend primarily on the velocity of wastewater flow through the bed. Therefore, it is often difficult to precisely determine the transformations of carbon and nitrogen compounds that occur during wastewater treatment on these types of filter beds. This study investigated the effectiveness of the filter bed and analysed the extent of the transformation of carbon and nitrogen compounds in the range of filtration velocities from $0.02$ to $0.60 m•h^{-1}$. The study was conducted under laboratory conditions, and model wastewater was prepared on the basis of sodium acetate, ammonium chloride, potassium nitrate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The model wastewater was prepared with parameters corresponding to those of the treated wastewater. The experiment showed that anaerobic and aerobic conditions occurred in the biological filter bed at filtration velocities of up to $0.16 m•h^{-1}$. Above this velocity, aerobic conditions prevailed in the biological filter bed.

Opis:
The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of change of direction (COD) and agility among players engaged in soccer, basketball, and handball. Additionally, the researchers introduced the novel concept of “Agility deficit”, aimed at evaluating distinctions between COD and agility during running (COD-R; Agility-R) and dribbling (COD-D; Agility-D). The participant cohort comprises 38 individuals with an average age of 20.63 years, distributed across 13 handball players, 12 soccer players, and 13 basketball players. Statistical analyses, specifically ANOVA accompanied by Tukey’s post hoc comparisons, have been employed to discern significant differences among subgroups. While no noteworthy disparities among groups were observed in both COD-D and Agility-D when participants manipulated the balls using their hands, a marked superiority in performance emerged for soccer players when the balls were manipulated with their legs. Soccer players exhibited expedited responses compared to their basketball and handball counterparts when confronted with a visual stimulus during the Agility-R test (reduced Agility-R deficit). Furthermore, the Agility-D deficit underscored the heightened visual challenge to react in visual stimuli during dribbling in soccer. Independent of the type of ball handling, soccer players consistently demonstrated a diminished Agility-D deficit, affirming their superior visual ability. The performance in Agility-D further revealed that visual ability plays a pivotal role in influencing dribbling ability. The study posits that, for a comprehensive assessment of a player’s visual ability during running or dribbling, interpretations of both Agility-R deficit and Agility-D deficit are imperative. Consequently, the proposed indexes of Agility-R deficit and Agility-D deficit present valuable tools for evaluating players’ COD and Agility abilities during running or dibbling. However, the efficacy of these assessments in real-game situations remains undetermined, requiring further investigation.

The paper presents the research on how the effectiveness of removing organic substances is affected by the use of polyurethane foam fillings characterized by a varied porosity and the temperature of the process of treating landfill leachate in a biological sequencing batch reactor. The information on the conversion of organic compounds during the operation of the reactor was obtained by measuring the absorbance for selected wavelengths to describe the process of humification. It was found that the technological conditions used in the experiment affected the effectiveness of reducing the COD, but did not affect the type or amount of the humic substances in the leachate treated. In all of the variants examined, the COD decreased the as the humification level increased, and yet this relation was not linear in character.

The research was conducted to investigate the efficiency and possibilities of advanced oxidation process based on ozone-hydrogen peroxide. The process was used as a post-treatment step of composting leachate utilisation. The leachate samples were collected from a typical composting plant with the aerobic biological treatment system. The samples were conditioned in a “ozone reactor” without dilution. The effectiveness of the treatment process was measured by pH values (4.0-7.0), H2O2 concentrations (0.5-4.0 g∙dm-3), ozone doses (0.5-1.5 g∙h-1) and reaction times (0-10 min). The highest removal efficiencies achieved were 85% and 92% for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), respectively. The optimum process parameters occurred at pH 5.0, 2.0 g∙dm-3 concentration of H2O2, and 0.75 g∙h-1 of ozone dose. The optimal reaction time was 3 min. The O3/ H2O2 advanced oxidation process was found to oxidize COD and BOD5 of the composting leachate. The oxidation reaction can be used as a feasible technique for composting leachate treatment.

This paper studies the changes which have occurred in the Spanish cod fishing industry in the last few years. We also aim to understand the dynamics of industrial change and its relation to institutions, understood here as both formal and informal rules and conventions. Our results suggest that sometimes industries, in order to maintain their competitive position, need something more than incremental changes in their products or in the technologies that they use. As we can see with the Spanish cod fishing industry, major changes are needed which affect the institutional set-up of their production system. Nevertheless, even when major changes happen in the production sphere, this does not mean that major alterations happen in the way companies innovate, i.e. in their innovation system.

A study of new pig manure treatment and filtration process was carried out. The advantage of the worked out technology is the method of incorporation of crystalline phase into solid organic part of manure. The obtained new solid phase of manure contains about 50% of crystalline phase forming a filtration aid that enables high effectiveness of manure filtration. The filtration rate of manure separation into solid and liquid fractions with pressure filter may achieve 1300-3000 kg/m2/h. The method makes it possible to maintain an overall average pollutant removal performance 90% for the chemical oxygen demand COD, > 99% for the suspended solids SS, to 47% for the total nitrogen content. The obtained results showed that the proposed technology being efficient and simple offers a possible solution to pig manure problems.

Fragmentary skull bones and vertebra from the Upper Eocene La Meseta Formation on Seymour (Marambio) Island, Antarctic Peninsula have been described as gadiform fishes, informally named “Mesetaichthys”. Here we describe jaws as Mesetaichthys jerzmanskae n. g. and n. sp., and refer this taxon to the perciform suborder Notothenioidei. This group is almost unknown as fossils. Similarities to the living, ‘primitive’ nototheniid Dissostichus eleginoides are indicated in the dentition. Gadiform evolution in the Paleocene-Eocene, and the possibility of a correlation between the origin and evolution of notothenioids in connection with the deterioration of the climate in Antarctica during the Late Eocene-Oligocene is discussed.

Opis:
A new technique for pretreatment of coking wastewater is introduced based on the concept of circular economy. Coal is fed into a coking system after adsorption. This study validates the feasibility of using coking coal to adsorb organic pollutants in coking wastewater. The sorption kinetics and equilibrium sorption isotherms of coking coal for removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phenol from coking wastewater was also discussed in this paper. Gas chromatograph/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) was used to detect changes in the quality of coking wastewater. The results showed that when coking coal dosage was 120 g/dm3, 65% of COD and 34% of phenol in waste water can be removed after 40 min of agitation. The surface functional groups of coking coal before and after adsorption were observed with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The kinetics of COD and phenol adsorption from coking wastewater by coking coal fitted the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption process of coking coal can be classified into two categories, namely, rapid and slow. The Freundlich isotherm provided a better fit with all adsorption isotherms than the Langmuir isotherm. Coking coal could be a suitable low-cost adsorbent for recalcitrant organic pollutants.

Opis:
In this study, the execution and assessment of the ANN approach towards the declaration of the pollution was used. The ANN-based models for prediction of Chemical and Biological Oxygen demands, (COD & BOD5) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) concentrations in the effluent were formed using a three-layered feed forward back propagation algorithm ANN towards assessing the performance of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Two types of configurations were used, MISO and MIMO. The study showed the superiority of MIMO according to the results of R and MSE, which were used as evaluation functions for the predicted models. The results also showed that the model built to predict the values of BOD5 concentrations demonstrate the best performance among the rest of the models by achieving the value of correlation coefficient up to 0.99. Among the input combinations tested in the study, the models the inputs of which did not contain BOD5 had the best performance, which demonstrates that the BOD5 has the largest influence on the values of R in the COD prediction models as well as other predicted models than TSS and other parameters; consequently, the performance of the WWTP was greatly affected. This study demonstrated the value of using artificial networks to represent the complex and non-linear relationship between raw influent and treated effluent water quality measurements.

Electricity generation was not signifi cantly affected by the azo dye at 300 mg/L, while higher concentrations inhibited electricity generation. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and decolorization of dye containing wastewater used in the MFC were studied at optimum operation conditions in anode and cathode, 57% COD removal and 70% dye removal were achieved. This study also demonstrated the effect of different catholyte solutions, such as KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 on electricity generation. As a result, KMnO4 solution showed the maximum electricity generation due to its higher standard reduction potential.

The cities of Iraq in general and the city of Al Diwaniyah in particular are characterized by the fact that the majority of households use septic tank to dispose of sewage, leading to contamination of ground and surface water and a disturbance to the environment. The objective of this study is to protect the water and soil sources from the risk of pollution, eliminate the process of perfusion and thus, reduce costs, maintain public health, as well as design and implement the proposed purification unit for domestic wastewater treatment. A domestic wastewater treatment unit has been improved to meet the standard specifications for the quality of the effluent wastewater. In this study, a compact non-electric sewage treatment unit was improved and implemented. Treatment is based on an effective modern biological purification process. Experimental verification and analysis of results were performed to demonstrate the improvement of physical and chemical parameters. The performance of the septic tanks-bioreactor gave satisfactory results. The removal efficiencies of Total Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), NH4-N, Total Nitrogen and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) were 96.9%, 84.6%, 78.8%, 79.9% and 95.3%, respectively.
