Opis:
The rock–brine–CO2 interaction significantly affects the mechanism and efficiency of the geological storage process. Therefore, learning and understanding the processes occurring in the pore space is extremely important to ensure the safe large-scale storage of this gas. A measurement procedure was developed to assess changes in petrophysical parameters under the influence of CO2. A specialized test stand was designed and built to simulate rock–brine–CO2 interaction under simulated reservoir conditions. The research was carried out on samples of carbonate rocks and Cambrian sandstones. In most cases, an improvement of filtration parameters in the 5–20% range was observed. In the case of samples in which the dominant mineral was calcite, the increase in filtration parameter values reached 200–400%. An increase in the diameter of the pore channels and a change in the surface roughness, as well as greater hydraulic connectivity of the pore space, will affect the capillary forces and the loss of continuity of the non-wetting fluid flow, limiting capillary trapping in the near-wellbore zone.

Opis:
The presented work concerns investigations of CO2-brine-rock interactions conducted over a period of 20-months. Experiments were carried out at laboratory scale with the use of equipment specifically designed for this purpose. Research materials (reservoir and cap rocks) were taken from the Chabowo 3 well located within Chabowo anticline. The experiments were carried out at room temperature (about 25°C) and pressure about 6 MPa. For samples before and after the experiment a numerous investigations were carried out i.e. petrophysical (porosity, surface area, threshold diameter, average capillary, framework and bulk densities) and petrological-mineralogical characteristics. Also brine used for examination before and after experiment was analyzed (chemical analysis). Petrophysical results have shown a significant decrease of porosity (from 17.0% to 7.5%) and surface area (from 0.395 m2/g to 0.196 m2/g) in case of sandstone. These changes are caused probably by crystallization of halite in pore spaces, because mineralogical analysis (XRD) has shown the presence of halite (3-5% vol. in the rock) after experiment. More detailed results were obtained during mineralogical analyses of thin sections. These results have shown in sandstone samples a small increase of porosity and a small decrease of feldspar and cements (carbonate and clay) as well as matrix which suggests dissolution of these constituents. For clay stone - after experiment XRD clay fraction has shown absence of clay minerals such as montmorillonite, which may also be caused by interaction between the rock, CO2 and brine. Dissolution of some minerals is evidenced by chemical analysis of brine where amounts of most tested ions increase after experiment for both sandstone and clay stone.

Opis:
When modelling the impact of the hydrogeochemical processes of CO2 sequestration on the contact zone of a saline sandstone aquifer and a claystone caprock in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, small decreases in porosity were noted, visible mainly in the aquifer rocks. They were due to the degradation of kaolinite, albite and muscovite, and the recrystallization of K-feldspar and quartz. The porosity of the caprock remained almost unchanged, which was to the advantage of the integrity of the repository. In major parts of the aquifer and caprock zone, the mineral trapping of CO2 has beneficial effects, but at the interface of the aquifer and the insulating layer, in the basal part of the caprock, a release of carbon dioxide may occur temporarily, associated with the dissolution of calcite.
