Opis:
Today’s world is facing the necessity of reducing air pollution. One of the alternatives is to limit pollution related to road transport by using CNG fuel. The European Union is imposing increasingly strict requirements regarding the cleanness of car fumes, and the Polish government is endeavouring to take actions aimed at reducing the pollution related to car use by planning the development of transport electromobility. In this article, the authors want to draw attention to methane as an alternative to traditional fuels. The article presents the results of a survey conducted among drivers, which regarded their readiness to use CNG-powered cars. The results indicate that while respondents appreciate the ecological value of this fuel, they are also worried about safety, which is contradicted by the analysis of CNG advantages and disadvantages.

Resources, production, refuelling stations and physic-chemical properties of natural gas are presented. Technical problems connected with application of natural gas to SI and CI engines are shown and analyzed. Presently most of gas vehicles are converted from gasoline to natural gas application but also many companies produce gas vehicles driven with Sl engines originally fabricated as gas vehicles. However natural gas spark ignition engines have lower torque than CI engines normally used in trucks, pick-ups and busses. Therefore CI engines are also adapted to gas fuelling as dual-fuel engines. Comparison of NG SI engines and dual-fuel engines is performed. Performances and emissions of gas automotive engines are presented. World natural gas reserves, natural gas production physical and chemical properties of typical natural gas, natural gas vehicles and refuelling stations in the world, schematic of CNG fuelling installation of IVth and Vth generation, combustion system, natural gas admission and control in DF NG engine, schematic of ADCR engine adapted to CNG fuelling are presented in the paper.

The compressed ignition engine with a dual fuel system is presented as an answer to the changing and demanding market conditions. Compressed natural gas (CNG) was used as an alternative fuel, due to its features and its competitive price compared to the other types of fossil and alternative fuels. The point of departure was a compressed ignition engine (inline four cylinders with a turbocharger), direct ignition and a mechanical fuel pump. The alternative fuel system included four CNG injectors and a special control unit, which was adopted on the engine. Gaseous and particle emissions are presented together with engine operation parameters for different engine speeds and loads. Each load as well as speed points were performed in Diesel mode and in Dual Fuel mode, with four different factors of torque replacement by CNG, to compare the influence of CNG on the engine.

Opis:
An idea of using biomass for generating electricity and heat leads to new solutions for power generators, adapted to be supplied with gaseous and liquid biofuels. At present, there is a growing interest in low-power generators. This type of energy production is termed 'scattered energy generation'. It is expected that generating energy in small units situated close to energy consumers may bring about substantial benefits. It is assumed that in a scattered energy generation system, energy will be produced from local fuels, such as broadly understood biomass as a primary component for production of gaseous and liquid biofuels to power low-power energy generators. An adequate amount of biomass must be secured to ensure that biogas can be produced all year round. The easiest way to store highly efficient biomass is to ensile maize and rye as well as grass. The amounts of biogas obtained from these two types of silage are comparable. Using rye as a renewable energy source for production of either bioethanol or biogas is economically viable for at least two reasons: rye grows on poor class soils and rye cultivation technology can be reduced to just nitrogen fertilization. In conclusion, it seems reasonable to generate energy in Poland in scattered energy generation systems from crops grown for this purpose. Currently, gas-powered engines are being in several ways.

The availability of gaseous fuels like natural gas and propane butane mixtures has lead to worldwide popularity of internal combustion engines running dual fuel or alternatively gas powered. They are known as fuels more resistant to knocking than conventional liquid fuels and as ones less pollutant, their better mixing with air is also well recognized. There have been many published works on the use of gaseous fuels but actually the problem of the combustion noise, as a very important source of acoustic discomfort is not receiving attention. Combustion noise occurs in two forms, direct and indirect. It is transmitted throughout the engine block as a vibration at a different spectrum of frequencies. In this study an attempt is made to correlate the combustion noise to the operating parameters for LPG and CNG powered engine as compared to petrol fuelled engine. Combustion pressure and vibration of cylinder block data are measured and presented for engine running on LPG/CNG and compared to the results obtained for engine fed by petrol. Signals of multiple resonances in combustion chamber and corresponding vibration signals of cylinder block of engine were considered for one combustion cycle. A four cylinder, 1.6 dm3 spark-ignition engine converted to run on LPG and CNG was tested in the project. The engine test stand was fully computerized and the cylinder pressure data, acceleration of vibration of engine block, crank angle data was stored on a PC. The influence of engine speed, load on combustion and engine block vibration was examined for all fuels. A few of well know diagnostic parameters were used for comparison of the engine noise for operation on petrol, LPG and CNG.

One of the basic problems concerning dual fuel powering of self-ignition engines is to determine the minimal dose of diesel oil injected into the combustion chamber in order to trigger self-ignition. Most research conducted to date on double-fuel powering self-ignition has been carried out on engines with mechanical injection systems, which does not ensure the possibility of obtaining very small diesel oil doses initiating self-ignition. The original system of fuelling the engine with diesel oil was replaced with a laboratory Common Rail system. The basic parameters of injector operation were controlled by a specially-developed system ensuring continuous choice of parameters of injector operation. The examined engine was fitted with a prototypical system of methane-air fuelling and a system for controlling and adjusting the supplied dose of methane This study presents the results of research aiming at determining the pilot dose injected into the combustion chamber of the engine to ensure the course of combustion in the engine operating under various loads. The results presented in the paper concern tests of a single-cylinder self-ignition engine, HATZ 1B40, operating in a generator adopted for CNG fuelling.

Opis:
The uncertainty in the supply of crude oil, increasing the number of vehicles and rising air pollution, especially in urban areas, has prompted us to look for alternative fuels. It is understood that using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in IC engines could be a mid-term solution to these problems. It is well established that CNG has better combustion characteristics and low emissions compared to conventional gasoline and diesel fuel. In the present study, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the engine performance and exhaust emissions using various percentages of CNG in dual fuel mode. CNG was mixed in the intake manifold’s air stream, and diesel was injected after the compression of the CNG air mixture. This paper presents experimental results of 40%,60%, and 80% CNG in the air stream. Engine performance and emissions are presented and discussed at a speed of 1200 rpm to 1500 rpm in steps of 50 rpm. The results of the experiments showed that adding CNG to diesel engines in dual-fuel combustion significantly impacted performance and emissions. Compared to single diesel fuel combustion, dual fuel combustion increases brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) at all CNG energy shares and engine speeds. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were increased, while nitrogen oxide (NOx) and smoke opacity were decreased in dual fuel combustion compared to single diesel fuel.

The article presents the tests results of the prototype design of hydraulically assisted injector that is designed for gas supply into diesel engines. The construction of the injector allows for its positioning in the glow plug socket, so that the gas is injected directly into the combustion chamber. The cycle analysis of the four-cylinder Andoria ADCR engine with a capacity of 2.6 dm3 for different crankshaft rotational speeds allowed to determine the necessary time for fuel injection. Because of that, it was possible to determine the required mass flow rate of the injector, for replacing as much of the original fuel by gaseous fuel. To ensure a high value of flow inside the injector, supply pressure equal to 1 MPa was applied. High gas supply pressure requires high value of valve opening forces. For this purpose a injector with hydraulic control system, using a liquid under pressure for the opening process was designed. On the basis of air pressure measurements in the flow line after the injector, the analysis of opening and closing of the valve was made. Measurements of outflow mass of the injector were also carried out. The results showed that the designed injector meets the requirements necessary to supply ADCR engine with CNG fuel.

All three Baltic States have reached good figures regarding the change in total greenhouse gas emissions from transport during 1990-2017. Particularly successful is Lithuania, showing a negative value of -2.7%. Latvia considerably lags behind Estonia (+15.1% vs. +1.5%). Amid the achievement of Latvian scientists, engineers and merchants, the authors point out the work of Lithuanian engineers who investigated how gaseous hydrogen affects the parameters of diesel internal combustion engine. Important to note that in the Baltic States, the activities of inland waterway vessels and the shunting locomotives are concentrated in only a few main cities. Regarding that, Baltic scientists and environment specialists nowadays are developing plans also for local air pollution decreasing, which can be carried out in particular cities or industrial areas, thereby allowing for improvements in air cleanliness and the ecological situation in concerned local area. A numerical estimation shows that applying the NYSMART technology, introduced in this paper, will make areas of active action of the high-volume diesels cleaner in the same amount as gained by photosynthesis of the urban green flora. In recent years, the developed technology of hydraulic piston compression allows producing numerous different vehicle fueling appliances for the CNG/bio-CNG fuel. The further development of this technology means the producing of various solutions, applicable at biogas/biomethane production sites, for CNG/bio-CNG compression, transportation and fast natural gas vehicles refueling in a cost effective and convenient way. The hydraulic piston compression and NYSMART have a potential in small and medium-scale technologies and therefore need to be developed further for applications with hydrogen. Production of biomethane and green hydrogen is delayed by the lack of state aid programmes in the Baltic States. Lithuania is on the way to change the situation in the coming years, with one of the first biomethane gas production plants due to be built near Panevėžys, in Šilagalys near the Via Baltica motorway. Summing up all aspects, the preconditions for the use of alternative fuels in the Baltic States are similar, allowing one to learn from other’s experience and to consider joint projects.

The paper presents the consequences of LNG usage as a marine fuel. The restrictions of harmful substances emission to atmosphere from marine engines, especially in controlled emission areas (ECA and SECA areas) of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, forces the engine makers to use additional installations, which operation may fulfill the purification requirements of exhaust gases. The option is a usage gaseous fuels, especially liquid natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG). There is no an alternative – only gaseous fuels may fulfill the Tier3 level without exhaust gases purification process. In prognosis about 650 ships (in high scenario about 2000) will be fuelled LNG in the year 2025. It was written why the liquid fuels stay unattractive. The basic problem is still the limited network of LNG distribution in ports and the lack of small vessels or barges for LNG bunkering. The proposition of design of LNG tank and barges were presented. The next problem is a deficiency of LNG bunker port in deep sea before entering the ECA areas. The controlled emission areas will extend in the near future. The LNG or CNG seemed to be the preferring fuel in industry due to CO2 emission limits and environmental taxes. The demand for LNG in prognosis to 2025 in bunker ports varies 0.1-18% of total fuel bunker depending on legislation and low or high case, in base case it will be 3%. It depends on the conviction of ship-owners that is no return from transition to the LNG or CNG ship fuelling. The examples to LNG ship conversion were described.
