Opis:
Since mythological times, music was considered to be a vital part of Chinese culture. Its very high social standing, deeply rooted in Confucian philosophy, resulted in the abundance of musical administration, for example, the first known musical institution was The Great Office of Music (M Dàsiyuè)of the Zhou dynasty which was re sponsible for teaching ritual and music; The Music Bureau (M Yuèfu)of the Qin and Han dynasty that collected and edited musical pieces, and numerous agencies under court of Tang or its Shrine of Imperial Sacrifices (Tàichângsî) managing various tasks, from education to musical performances. In the Song dynasty, musical offices followed the tradition of their predecessors, but on a much smaller scale. The article aims to describe musical institutions of the ancient Chinese court and determine whether they can be described as a musical bureaucracy. The paper is divided into three main parts: the first outlines the term “bureaucracy” in accordance to both lexical and Max Weber’s definitions; the second presents the main offices that dealt with music and its evolution; the third part functions as the conclusion, the author compares the main characteristic of musical agencies with the meaning of the term bureaucracy.

Opis:
This paper aims to sketch out key rhetorical motifs produced by the Chinese propaganda machine under Mao Zedong (1893–1976). In particular, the dominant themes of the 1950s and 1960s are discussed through the prism of both communist ideology and links with Chinese tradition and culture. To achieve this goal, key features of the Chinese language, a brief outline of distinctive features of Chinese rhetoric correlated with European tradition as well as the principles of Maoism as an ideology are presented. In the main section of this paper, an overview of five selected rhetorical themes, based on their popularity in everyday propaganda, is discussed. The final section contains research conclusions. One of the distinctive features of Maoist rhetoric is the fact that both ancient Chinese traditions and the authoritarian language of communist ideology were inherently interlinked. This paper is intended to better understand this unique connection and to gain an insight into the specific nature of the Maoist perspective on rhetoric and communication.

The teachings of Confucius – as a tradition of social ethics – have exerted a profound (and continuing) infl uence on China (and East Asia) for more than 2000 years. This paper will look closer into this tradition by focusing less on the ethical and more on the political role of Confucianism. As will be shown, though, the two cannot be neatly divided but form an inseparable whole respective of personal and social ethics with political relevance. Thus, in the following, Confucianism will be discussed as a tradition of political thought, first regarding its major autochthonous concepts, such as “people-based thought”, “humane rule”, “harmony” or “the world shared by all alike”, second and third, in relationship to Marxism and democracy. In this final section, Michael Sandel’s book: Democracy’s Discontent will serve as a point of comparison for Chinese prerogatives in politics.

The items available for ars contextualis can be characterized in terms of the focal point from and to which the lines of divergence and convergence attributable to them move and find resolution, and the field from which and to which those same lines proceed and have influence. To take Confucius himself as a concrete example, we would have to allow that he is corporate in the sense that the lines of divergence and convergence that constitute his focus and meaning move throughout the entire field of the Chinese cultural tradition. Confucius is both focus and China as a focused field.

Artykuł jest próbą zrekonstruowania koncepcji ideologicznych oraz metod artystycznych, jakie postulowali oraz praktykowali twórcy chińskich filmów animowanych inspirowanych tradycyjnym malarstwem, stanowiących realizację odgórnie narzuconego wyzwania o charakterze ideologicznym. Analizie zostaje poddany proces realizacji filmów wykonanych w malarskiej technice tuszu i wody.
This article attempts to reconstruct the ideological concepts and artistic methods postulated and practiced by makers of Chinese animated films inspired by traditional painting, which are the implementation of a top-down ideological challenge. The process of making films made in the ink and water technique is analysed. The author refers to four films that were made in Shanghai between 1960 and 1988 and occupy an important position in the established canon. The historical development of Chinese animation is considered in the context of ideas central to contemporary aesthetics and artistic practice: zhongti, xiyong (Chinese substance, Western means), minzu (national art) and meishu (fine art).

Opis:
In the nineteenth century started on the unprecedented earlier scale migration from China to the areas of the Americas. The main group were coolies, the new cheap, slave manpower. Their migration, caused by the internal crisis in China, on the other by growing demand for manpower in Americas, lasted almost until the end of the century, and on a smaller scale already in the first decades of the twentieth century. More than half a million Chinese settled in the western hemisphere, most in Cuba and Peru. Immigrants didn't assimilate with the local people and created closed „Chinese" enclaves. This and economic competition caused hostility towards the „yellow plague", often expressed in pogroms of immigrants. Chinese emigration to american states also had an impact on China relations with them (in such issues as the establishment of diplomatic relations and signing treaties about status of the Chinese minority).

Opis:
Personal names usually contain some information which falls within the broad content of culture. They are often imbued with information on history, religion, social organization, mentality, values, preferences or symbols. Chinese naming practices do not restrict the inventory of possible given names, and as based upon characteristics of the Chinese culture, Chinese language and Chinese writing system, they grant a great deal more opportunity for creativity in naming than is the case in Western cultures. The paper deals with the specific tradition and practice of Chinese generational naming, i.e. it presents various types and categories of Chinese generation given names, indicating the order of birth of children within a family or within generations of a clan. Generation names appear to be unique to China. The tradition and practice of generation naming were formed to ensure the unity of the great Chinese family and to maintain its continuity and prosperity. According to the research material, there are two main types of generation names, i.e. (I) names denoting the order of birth in a family by using special seniority terms or numerals, and (II) names indicating the order of birth within generations of a family or a clan, or the seniority in a family, created by using some special generational methods of forming Chinese names, based mainly upon the characteristics of the Chinese language and its writing system.

In 2017 statistics showed that Chinese Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in Poland for 2016 amounted to a more than half of all Chinese FDI in Poland for the 2000–2016. Yet the overall amount of Chinese FDI remains modest in comparison with Western Europe or even with Hungary. Despite much proclaimed Sino-Polish rapprochement in 2015–2016 and high hopes for OBOR/BRI initiative in Poland, cooperation with China has not been a breakthrough for Poland in terms of economic results. There have not been ground-breaking Sino-Polish projects and Polish government’s desire to strengthen ties with China loosened in late 2016/early 2017 (though it may revive now). There are several reasons for that, from the perception of Poland as non-attractive for majority Chinese investments, via lack of overall Polish strategy of attracting these investors to discrepancies of economic interests between Poland and China.

The article aims to show that there are determinants of consumer behavior in Chinese society that remain relevant regardless of the direction of global social changes - caused by the digital transformation of society and economy, the development of artificial intelligence and unexpected events such as pandemics. The factors influencing consumption in China undoubtedly include culture, politics, as well as macroeconomic factors influencing the level and pace of consumption development. It is worth analyzing consumer behavior using interdisciplinary knowledge and bearing in mind the complex and diverse changes taking place on a national scale, and the emergence of new terminology is a reflection of the changing specificity of consumption in China. Awareness of the dynamics of changes in the behavior of Chinese consumers will not only facilitate business relations with Chinese contractors, but will also help determine the direction of consumption development at the global level, as the possibilities of e-commerce developing in China are also used and tested in Europe.

The research reported here include surveys that identified needs as perceived by students, and contrasted these with studies of existing Korean departments of Chinese. This research indicates that Korean universities currently lack the ability to meet students’ needs. For more effective education, Chinese departments should offer two-track curricula, consisting of a language track and a social science track.

The difficulties in tonal phonemes identification in hearing-impaired native Chinese and in non-tonal language users learning Chinese as a foreign language inspire the scientists to research the register of tones, acoustic features of tonal languages, the fundamental frequency (F0), tone contour and duration, and the speech signal – natural and subjected to filtration.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the distinguished properties of by-names as forms differentfrom official ones, to analyze their structural and semantic features and to search for their historicalevidence. By-names of Chinese places should not be defined as unusual and informal, since actually in many cases by-names are formal and very common in China nowadays. By-names are generally bestowed on important places (mostly cities) that win the public interest. Most of them have twostructural parts, the front specific parts are determiners / qualifiers and the back ones are generics. The generics generally are: cheng 城 ‘town / city’, du 都 ‘capital’, jiang 江 ‘river’, shan 山 ‘mountain’, dao 岛 ‘island’ etc. The lexical meanings of lexical items forming specific parts of by-namesmainly refer to animals, plants, minerals, local manufactured products, climate and natural scenery, geographical location, humans, areas, etc. Chinese contemporary by-names, used on various occasions, vary in frequency and stability. The by-names discussed in the paper only account for a smallproportion and are listed just due to their relatively high frequency, stability and acceptability.

In 1957 the first announcements about the territorial disputes between USSR and PRC were issued in China. And in 1960 Zhou Enlai stated that there were insignificant disrepancies in the Russian and Chinese maps, very easy to solve. Over the next nearly 30 years the problem of determination of the border has become a victim of tense and hostile Soviet-Chinese relations and unproductive talks. Gorbachev’s rise to power in the Kremlin enabled to negotiate a solution to the Soviet-Chinese border problem. And consequently to sign “The agreement on the eastern section of the Sino-Soviet state border” on May 16, 1991. The agreement on the western section of the border was signed on September 3, 1994. The demarcation of the western section of the border was finished by Joint Russian-Chinese Demarcation Commission on September 10, 1998. After six years of negotiations on October 14, 2004 the Complementary Agreement on the Eastern Section of the China–Russia Boundary was signed in Beijing. On its basis the Russian side ceded the whole of Tarabarov island (ch. Yinlongdao), half of Bolshoy Ussuriyski (ch. Heixiazidao) and half of Bolshoy (ch. Abagaitu) island. Another halves of Bolshoy Ussuriyski and Bolshoy islands were kept by Russia. Both sides shared disputed territory almost equally. The ceremony of installation of the border landmarks between Russia and China on Bolshoy Ussuriyski island (on October 14, 2008) finished the long process of demarcation of the Russian-Chinese border.

Many studies (McBride-Chang et al., 2008; Bialystok et al., 2005) have shown that the syllable is the basic unit when learning Chinese pronunciation. This study attempts to explore how adult native speakers of Polish (non-tonal language with the alphabet based on Latin script) develop Chinese tonal syllables through intensive training at the beginning level. Students from the Faculty of Philology participated in a four-stage phonetic teaching program and experiment. First, learners exercise excessive articulation of vowels, practicing how to carry the tone. Secondly, students try to assign the meaning to the joined segmental and supra-segmental phonetic units. Then, acquisition of Chinese morphemes/lexemes is supported with characters to differentiate homophones in the learning process. Finally, students are trained to decode the heard syllables in a sequence into meaningful phases and sentences. Next, the pronunciation experiment in two series provides an insight into the development of the Chinese syllable production.
