Opis:
Participation in interactive games, especially those in immersive environments, is often employed in learning contexts to stochastically develop L2 learners’ language ability. However, typical measures of language ability often do not reflect pragmatic competencies. This study juxtaposes two elementary school ESL learners’ language ability, and facility with the media, with their politeness measures. Data was collected from out-of-school gameplay chat in a virtual environment designed for elementary school learners. Results suggest learners can express pragmatic miscues to interlocutors in the lean media of synchronous chat.

LAMS Chat and Forum were used to conduct in-class online conversations with second year university students to raise the level of engagement with their compulsory class texts. These discussions overcame students’ reluctance to speak up in class, avoided the conversation being dominated by one or two of their classmates, could accommodate simultaneous small groups and moved the discussion to a student-centred activity. As LAMS Chat and Forum retains all previous history, students’ contributions could be reviewed at any time and formally assessed. The marked improvement in the students’ engagement with the texts has ensured the discussions will continue to be included in the program.

Opis:
The object of this paper is to analyze the lexicon of the chat conversations which is characterized by the great feeling of wanting to belong to the chat group community. The identity and crypto-recreational functions of the chat are visible through the analyzed phenomena like truncation with apocope, clipping and syncope, loans from English and also the creation of rebus and graphic games. All this constitutes a real transgression of the conventional orthography, at the same time that allows a great pleasure playing with the language. It really represents a new way of transcribing words using less space, that is better adapted to the principles of time and space saving. These rebus and graphic games are a particular case of identity expression by the chat users. The recreational aspect of this language allows the community to develop and enrich it continuously.
Cet article a pour objectif d’analyser les conversations chatiennes en français, en espagnol et en polonais afin de montrer le caractère identitaire de la cybercommunauté. Le caractère crypto-ludique des conversations est observable à travers différents procédés utilisés dans les discours de chat tels que la troncation, les jeux graphiques, ainsi que les rébus. Par ailleurs, ces pratiques linguistiques constituent une transgression langagière par rapport au langage standard. En somme, l’analyse des discours chatiens produits dans trois langues visent à mettre en évidence à la fois l’universalité de certains procédés, ainsi que l’aspect identitaire du cybergroupe.

This article focuses on the nicknames that are formed from the anthroponyms and used by the Internet users, especially in the context of the real time communication on the Internet, which means the chat communication. The author puts emphasis particularly on the anthroponymic nicknames, which are formed from the hypocorisms. The aim of the article is to provide a deep analysis of all the possible ways of the formation of hypocorisms from the nicknames. Moreover, another aim of the article is to give a detailed quantification of all the ways of their formation and their possible use in the electronic communication. In addition, the richness of the ways of their formation is further illustrated by the concrete examples taken from the corpus.

Nasza epoka jest nierozerwalnie związana z nowymi formami komunikacji elektronicznej. Świat Internetu oferuje internautom nowe formy komunikacji, wśród których należy wymienić pocztę elektroniczną, fora dyskusyjne oraz czaty. Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce tych nowych form komunikacji, a zwłaszcza „czatowej” odmianie języka francuskiego i czeskiego. Celem tego szkicu jest refleksja nad ekwiwalencją terminologii językoznawczej opisującej poszczególne zagadnienia języka czatu w obu wspomnianych językach.
We live in a period which is inseparably linked to new forms of electronic communication. The Internet provides its users with new forms of communication among which are messaging, discussions, and chats. Our article focuses on such types of electronic communication, with a special regard to the use of French and Czech in chatrooms. The aim of our study is to analyse the equivalence of linguistic terminology used for the description of chat language phenomena in both above mentioned languages.

This paper is an attempt to examine what the language function is in the modern society, the society of virtual relations, with a focus on nicknames used on Italian chat lines. There are some studies on the Internet phenomenon and its peculiarity, however in human science they mostly refer to the social and psychological aspects. Still there are little papers in the field of linguistics, especially on the Italian language used in Internet. It is undeniable that the contemporary science is associated with many different fields, so taking into consideration their interdisciplinary character the present study is to investigate the social and linguistic aspects of how the virtual reality influences language, perception and social relations. We will concentrate on the users’ identities and their lexical representation in Italian.

Although French is a Romance language descendant ffrom the Latin, there is of course some influence of other languages on it. English is perhaps the most important source of loan-words for the present French language. Our article is focused on new forms of written communication, mainly computer-mediated communication (CMC). The main aim of this article is to analyze the loan-words, especially the anglicisms that are used by chatters in various French chats. After examining the motivations of loan, the article studies the frequency of anglicisms in three chats and observes their grammatical adaptation in the context of CMC. A huge richness of anglicisms is illustrated by concrete examples taken from our corpus.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane fragmenty badania leksyki czatu internetowego z wykorzystaniem metodologii korpusowej. Na początku autor przedstawia dotychczasową metodologię obecną w badaniach komunikacji w Internecie, po czym przechodzi do opisu metodologii wykorzystanej w referowanym badaniu. Czytelnik poznaje tutaj najistotniejsze cechy utworzonego korpusu pogawędek internetowych. Następnie autor przechodzi do opisu wybranych zagadnień kwantytatywnych badań leksyki czatu. Rozpoczyna od omówienia statystyk badanego korpusu. Dalej przedstawia analizę niestandardowego zapisu wyrazów, po czym przechodzi do zrelacjonowania ważniejszych obserwacji odnośnie charakterystycznych właściwości leksyki czatu.
The article discusses selected fragments of a corpus-based analysis of Internet chat room lexis. First, the author presents previously used methodologies for Internet communication studies. After that, he describes the methodology he used in his research. At this point, the reader becomes acquainted with the most crucial characteristics of the created corpus of Internet chats. Further, the author goes on to delineate selected elements of quantitative studies on chat room lexis. He begins with the portrayal of corpus statistics. Then, he proceeds to discuss non-standard spelling, after which, he reports on the most important observations as for the characteristics of chat room lexis.

University EFL students in Ecuador do not have many opportunities to authentically practice English outside of the classroom. This lack of daily connections decreases students’ ability to effectively communicate and improve in language learning. Therefore, an international language exchange program was created with 17 students through video chat platforms. The objective of the research was to give students an opportunity to practice English to increase intrinsic motivation and oral communication. This study followed a mixed method approach using questionnaires, informal interviews and observations over a five-week period. The program showed increased confidence in speaking, students seemed to be more intrinsically motivated to improve and an increase in fluency was seen in overall communication skills.

Cri du Chat syndrome (CdC) is a rare disease characterized, among others, by decreased muscle tone, microcephaly, and high palate; underdevelopment of the mandible, abnormal structure and laryngeal function (somatic symptoms) and disorders of psychomotor development and intellectual disability (psychomotor symptoms). These children have a varied level of functioning and most of them do not use verbal speech. Describing the problem of preverbal communication behaviors, the following elements were taken into account: the level of behavior in the primary communication, sensory, auditory communication, organization of behavior and signaling needs. The purpose of this article is to describe the pre-verbal behavior of children with Cri du Chat syndrome. The following questions were formulated: What is the level of pre-verbal communication (primary, sensory and auditory) of a child with CdC syndrome? What are the communicative behaviors of the child with the CdC team and at what level of organization? What is the level of signaling your needs by a child with CdC? The preverbal communication behavior of children with the Cri du Chat team presented in the article indicate that they are diverse, ranging from indicating the gesture of what they need, to vocalizing in order to provoke contact with another person. The behavior of the daughter / son indicated by the parents may constitute the basis for the teaching process of preverbal communication.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi opis przypadku 5,5-letniego chłopca z zespołem Cri du Chat. W artykule podjęto próbę oceny poziomu rozwoju mowy oraz wskazano zachowania językowe i komunikacyjne, które są udziałem badanego dziecka. Pomimo znacznych opóźnień w rozwoju chłopiec jest w stanie komunikować się z otoczeniem za pomocą komunikacji niewerbalnej oraz komunikacji alternatywnej i wspomagającej (obrazki PCS), a wybrane sposoby porozumiewania się są efektywne.
The present article is a description of the case of a 5.5-year-old boy with Cri du Chat syndrome. The paper seeks to assess the level of speech development and shows linguistic and communicative behaviors exhibited by the child. Despite significant delays in development, the boy is able to communicate with the people around him by means of non-verbal communication as well as alternative and adjunctive (PCS pictures) communication, the chosen ways of communication being effective.

The 5p deletion syndrome (5p-, Cri-du-chat syndrome, CdCS) is a genetic disorder which results from a partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5. It was first described by Lejeune et al. in 1963. The incidence ranges from 1:15 000 to 1:50 000 live births. The 5p- is usually diagnosed in the first days of life because of the characteristic monotonous high pitched cat-like cry and relatively constant dysmorphic features. Other symptoms often present in the neonatal period include low birth weight, muscle hypotonia, asphyxia and feeding difficulties due to impaired suction and swallowing, which may all lead to failure to thrive. Organ malformations, with various larynx abnormalities, although not very frequent, can also be present. Symptoms that are prevalent in later life include severe motor delay and intellectual disability with significant speech impairment, as well as behavioral problems. The case report presents a female infant in her 5th month of life in whom, despite the typical symptoms of 5p-, stridor and episodes of choking were the main problems. Laryngotracheal endoscopy revealed the type I laryngeal cleft. Genetic analysis confirmed the diagnose of 5p- syndrome. The presented case shows that it is critically important to perform a further investigation and refer a child with laryngological problems coexisting with dysmorphic features to a clinical geneticist.

W artykule przedstawiono budowę klienta sygnalizacji współpracującego z prostym serwerem sygnalizacyjnym. Klient taki może być prostym klientem, wymagającym jedynie podstawowej sygnalizacji, lub bardziej złożonym. Jako przykład systemu o większym stopniu złożoności pokazano aplikację zgodną z architekturą WebRTC. W artykule przedstawiona została przykładowa komunikacja pomiędzy klientem i serwerem zebrana podczas sesji WebRTC. Artykuł zawiera również przykłady dwóch rozwiązań aplikacji czatu internetowego, które wykorzystują ten sam interfejs użytkownika oraz ten sam system sygnalizacji (drugie rozwiązanie rozszerza pierwsze o obsługę komunikatów sygnalizacyjnych techniki WebRTC), różnią się natomiast sposobem transmisji danych użytkownika (wiadomości tekstowych czatu). W pierwszym rozwiązaniu dane użytkownika przenoszone są kanałem sygnalizacyjnym (via serwer sygnalizacyjny) z wykorzystaniem interfejsu WebSocket. W drugim rozwiązaniu dane użytkownika przenoszone są bezpośrednio pomiędzy przeglądarkami (kanałem WebRTC przeznaczonym do transmisji danych niemedialnych) z wykorzystaniem interfejsu RTCDataChannel techniki WebRTC.
A simple signalling server, written in JavaScript and running in node.js run-time environment, was presented in the previous paper of the Authors [3]. In this paper, principles of building of WebRTC signalling client are presented, as well as exemplary communication between the client and the server, captured with the use of WireShark software tool during experimental WebRTC sessions. The paper includes also an example of application of Internet chat, that uses the simple signalling server [3]. The chat was builreneusz in two versions, which uses the same user interface and their signalling systems were build according to the same methodology, but differs in method of transmission of chat messages. The first version transmits user data (text messages of the chat) via signalling server, with the use of signalling channel. This version uses WebSocket interface for transmission of chat messages. In the case of the second version, user data are transmitted directly between web browsers, using WebRTC's channel dedicated for transmission of nonmedia data. This version transmits chat messages with the use of WebRTC's RTCDataChannel interface.

One of the key aspects of the debate on the issues of communication in the chat room, in which Internet users face is the impact of nicks, or virtual names spoken by users, on the frequency and quality of communication. In this paper the analysis of the two generated for the study are nicknames used tools from the naming, the marketing discipline involved in creating names for companies and products. One of the basic elements is the architecture of name – scheme proposed by Marek Zboralski, allowing you to capture the names contained in persuasive messages.
