The article shows research for the sources of the Ruthenian art at the break of the 19th century that became the basis for formation of the Ukrainian art. To form one's own art it was necessary to use the models from the past epochs, i.e. to refer to history. Native art needed not only contents, but also formal iconographic types and motifs that could be followed by Ukrainian painters. Historiographic reception of Ruthenian art, and first of all reaching for the art of the 15th-17th centuries, provided responses to those needs and shaped the vision of native painting with national values, based on religious tradition. In the discussion we are dealing, when we take under consideration literature in two languages, Polish and Ukrainian, with works written on “two different sides” with respect to national interests of the authors who fought for ideas confirming their national identity in the press, in reviews of exhibitions and in monographic works, in which thinking about particular works often led to very interesting general considerations of religious and national art; with the texts written by native art lovers expressing their admiration of its originality, as well as by works written by professional researchers, like M. Sokołowski or W. Podlacha. The Polish side begins this intensive discussion in connection with staging the Archeological Exhibition in 1885. Then the Ukrainian side, especially after the Archeological-Bibliographical Exhibition put on by the Stauropigial Institute in Lvov in 1888, speaks more frequently about this issue and looks for an explanation that would be proper for its own culture. The discussion resulted in distinguishing the native old-Ruthenian art that formed the foundations for the national art. It also showed that the Ruthenian painting had overcome the Byzantine canon, and under the influence of the West it started to develop in an original way. This was appreciated and it discovered possibilities for an artistic creative individuality, and using the achievements of the icon and the Halicz painting it also paved the way towards a revival of the Ukrainian art.

Opis:
The Byzantine philosopher Michael Psellos (11th century) wrote a brief treatise entitled An Explanation of the Drive of the Soul Chariot and the Army of Gods According to Plato in the Phaedrus. The treatise consists of a compilation of excerpts from Hermias’ commentary on the Phaedrus. Psellos does not mention Hermias’ name but rather traces the origins of the treatise back to some “Greek theologians”. Psellos’ text presents a great interpretative challenge: the order of the myths about the charioteer and the parade of gods is reversed so that the former explicates the latter in such a way that the whole Platonic argument is dismissed as “absurd”. The Phaedrus in the Neo ‑Platonic tradition (in Iamblichus in particular) is considered to be a strictly theological dialogue. Yet, Psellos’ arrangement shows that he was not interested in the mythographical or allegorical dimension of the excerpts. He rather focused on the epistemic problem, i.e., a reduction of the trichotomy of the soul into a duality of principles. Thus, he followed certain Aristotelian commentators. Psellos suggests a reduction that is subjectivist or individualist in its nature and he refuses to identify individual intellect with any particular piety.

The article seeks to present an overview of the history of Byzantine philosophy. It takes its point of departure in the most important factors that influenced and shaped the Patristic thought. Subsequently, the paper considers the relative autonomy of Byzantine philosophy and offers a brief profile of major philosophers that contributed to the stream in the period from 9th to 15th century. From the numerous subjects that were taken into account by the most prominent Byzantine philosophers, the article discusses such issues as: the view of God, the problem of ‘conceptual realism’, the relationship between such ‘disci  plines’ as logic, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics and philosophical anthro  pology. Furthermore, such questions as the place of man in the world, the scope of their freedom and the problem of evil are also touched upon here. The paper concludes with some remarks on the develop  ment of Byzantine philosophy after the fall of Byzantium.

Opis:
Icon painting emerged in the Byzantine Empire - the Christian empire of the Hellenistic East during the years 330-1453 - as a fully fledged and widely spread art around 500 BC. The first steps in this art were taken in the early Christian art of painting including those examples found in the catacombs in the 2nd and 3:d centuries. It is an original, highly formalized art influenced by classical Greek art and Egyptian Hellenistic art as well as other art traditions especially Syrian. During the reign of Justus the Great who ruled in the Byzantine Empire for forty years (527-565), the Byzantine art of icon painting flourished. It continued to do so until the outburst of the Iconoclasm in 726. That year the emperor Leo III decreed that painting or using icons was to be regarded as idolatry. The Iconoclasm lived on, with a few intermissions until 843. From 843, when the church conquered the iconoclasm, the art of icon painting was revived, this time until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This era was a golden age for the icon. During this second period of icon painting, its principal prototypes were shaped and the habit of adorning churches with icons was established.

The article describes the basic types of pictorial representations of the Holy Trinity. The Old Testament prefiguration of the Trinity that became a type scene is the so-called „Hospitality of Abraham”. This is the variant of the „Trinity” used by Andrew Rublev. The „New Testament Trinity” represents such topics as „Fatherhood” and the „Common Throne”. The revelation of the Trinity as a whole is also evident in icons depicting scenes from Christ’s life, such as the icons of the Nativity, Baptism, Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, where each of the divine persons is manifested in a different way. God the Father is revealed as the sphere of heaven located in the upper part of the image, the Son of God is manifested in human flesh, and the Holy Spirit is depicted in the form of a dove, or a radiant cloud (mandorla). Numerous compositions also make use of the symbol of a triple beam, which stresses the Trinitarian nature of the depicted scene. The formation of epiphanic representations of the Trinity was influenced not only by the realities revealed in the text of the Scripture, but also by the tenets laid down at the Councils of Nicaea in 325 and Constantinople in 381. Trinitarian terminology was also developed by Eastern and Western theologians such as Basil the Great, Greogory of Nazianus, Hilary of Poitiers, Ambrose of Milan, Augustine of Hippo.

Byzantine rubrics
Opis:
In the Byzantine Church there were many liturgical rubrics of the Great Constantinople church, Everghetidos, Athonite (or of the Holy Mountain), Studite, patriarchal (of the Holy Sepulchre), Costamonitou, skete, Studite-Alekseyev, of St Sabbas etc. Those rubrics were used in monasteries, sketes, cathedrals and parishes. Many of them existed simultaneously. Due to the changing church reality the place of the rubrics of the Great Constantinople church and of the Holy Sepulchre was taken by that of Jerusalem and later by Studite-Alekseyev rubrics. Before the XV century in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania the Great Constantinople and the Studite rubrics were enriched by the local liturgical traditions, even the ideological sense of many elements was changed and was assumed to be a part of autonomous, authentic ancient Russian religious life. At that time begins the reform of the liturgical rubrics, finished in the second half of the XVII century by patriarch Nikon. Starting from the XV century the Jerusalem rubrics in their Constantinopolitan version were introduced in the Russian Church. The reform of the liturgical rubrics in the Suprasl monastery, carried out by archimandrite Sergius Kimbar, was based on the liturgical indications of the Holy Mountain Typicon, Przemyśl Typicon, “tchastoslovs” of various Greek monasteries, as well as texts from “holy books of Church rules” in Slavonic. All the mentioned books were offered to the monastery by Joseph Soltan, the metropolitan of Kiev, Halych and all Russia. The reforms met some opposition from the brethren, in some cases justified, as certain changes were not based on the Church rubrics. Still in parish and in monastery churches of the Grand Lithuanian Duchy in the services there were a lot of elements coming “rather from the local habits than from the books”. One of the remarks made by archimandrite Sergius concerned the lack of readings from the Church Fathers during the Mattins and the Vigil. He questioned also the use of the Royal Doors, he introduced in Suprasl monastery churches the interior narthex etc. One can also notice the same Byzantine style changes in the Russian church culture, especially in choral music.

It is known that human spirituality is rooted in the values of past generations. Therefore, for any nation, its original development is extremely important to remember their spiritual and moral roots, traditions and holy sites. The memory of the people impregnated by values of generations, helps it to survive, keep life experience, the culture. Especially actual it becomes during critical period of historical development of various ethnic groups. At the present stage of East-West maintained a number of contradictions, at times acutely manifested spiritual crisis that requires us to address the sources of Byzantine spirituality. The initial stage of formation of any phenomenon of social and spiritual structure plan provides a constant, defining the vector (direction) of development, so and its specific contents. These constant structures should be the uniting factor in all directions of cooperation of the East and the West. The main factor of this relationship is spirituality. Spiritual experience of the past can give answers to present calls. Communication of modern man with previous generations through art, literature, religion, moral values system expands the boundaries of its practical and spiritually strengthens, brings love for their homeland.

Opis:
Slavic culture was greatly influenced by Byzantine culture, arts, architecture, political science, scientific ideas and also theology. A very important role in the development of literature belongs to joining of the Slavs to Byzantine culture by accepting Christianity. The initial division of literary works into the works, for example, of juridical type, historical, theological type, with the time required all of them to have artistic expression. Interaction with folklore, with the high level of oral tradition of the Slavs led to the development of artistic qualities of literature and to the broadening of its social functions. Transformation of borrowed genres made foundation for creating first common Slavic original literary works, such as hagiography, record, story, chronicle and others. The influence of Byzantine culture on Slavic culture began later, when the shift had already finished and Slavic literature already existed and was developing. As a result, the Byzantine literary work became the work of local, national literature, which was written, taking into consideration moral and aesthetic ideals, developed by the Slavs.

Opis:
The liturgical calendar used in the Orthodox Church in Romania dates back to the remote times of antiquity. The structure of the calendar was decisively formed in the period of Byzantium and its use was upheld by the tradition until the 20th century. The article describes the organization of the Orthodox calendar in Romania. It is divided into three cycles which designate the most significant holidays as well as customs and habits observed by the believers. The basic course is the daily cycle, which allows monks to live according to a specific rhythm determined by prayer, work and rest. It consists of seven prayers that fall at the same times of day and night. The weekly cycle includes seven days of the week starting with Sunday that is the first and at the same time the last day of the week on a symbolic level. Orthodox religion associates particular days of the week with remembering the mystery of faith, a saint or a group of saints. The liturgical week is an icon in the middle of which the Orthodox place Jesus Christ, thus it is often called a Weekly Passover. It symbolically invokes the history of salvation. The annual cycle is divided into the moveable and immoveable feasts (derived from Easter). The Orthodox Church appoints them according to the spiritual, not historical order. The spiritual order displays God’s plan to save humanity. This routine makes a full circle every year, with the same holidays placed along the course. A deliberate plan to destroy spiritual culture by communist authorities led to partial disappearance of Orthodox traditional customs or transformed them into a folk spectacle. The Communism has fallen and we can witness the resurrection of the Orthodox culture. There is a great return to the liturgical texts as well as to belles lettres created in the Byzantine time. Beside them, the old beliefs, habits and rituals molded in the Byzantine Christianity are slowly brought back to life.

The article explains the iconographic scheme of symbolic representations of Christ, which were present in the Russian and Byzantine art. In comparison to the first characters used on the early these icons have theological content. They represent the whole process of salvation for mankind, and many of them associated with the liturgy. For example, images of Christ as a “Watchful eye” or as the Lamb of God refer to the rites performed during the initial part of the Liturgy. Also important are the images of Christ in the performances of the whole Trinity. The type of the Old Testament Trinity He is shown as one of the three angels, and New Testament Trinity in the form of a man in robes of blue and red. Distinct type of representation is the Son of God in the form of an angel. There is here such topics as: Christ the Holy Silence, Christ Crucified Seraph and Sophia-Wisdom of God.
