Opis:
The article presents the results of archaeological research carried out in connection with the construction of the S3 expressway. At the site in Szymanowice, traces of a settlement from the younger Stone Age and the Bronze Age were discovered. In the course of the research, relics of buildings were distinguished that could be connected with adjacent features to form separate homesteads, as well as urn graves and relics of burial mounds. Some of the finds can be associated with the population of the Góra group, but most of them come from the period of the Lusatian culture development. The burial zone of this culture was adjacent to a slightly later residential zone.

Abstract: The goal of this contribution is to discuss the question of separation or connection of the sacred and the secular spheres in the prehistory. The basis for these considerations were the results of excavations carried out in Kunowo, Stargard district, site 4, where a biritual burial ground and a related settlement of the Gustow group population dated to the early Roman influence period was unearthed.

This article recapitulates information available, and mostly not published yet, on the statues in the form of the god Osiris from the Upper (Coronation) and Lower Porticoes of the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. This includes the North and South Colossi, both of which were recently restored in a pilot reconstruction project undertaken by the Polish team, revising a missed restoration attempt by earlier excavators. Other examples include a sandstone painted statue of Amenhotep I, from Asasif, in the form of the mummiform figure of the god Osiris, which was also reconstructed, a fragmentary sandstone statue of Amenhotep III in the form of Osiris, as well as two fragments of statues of Osiris from the Third Intermediate Period burial ground discovered in the area of the temple of Hatshepsut.

Opis:
The term “ancient Indian burial ground” holds bifurcated meaning for Indigenous and mainstream populations. What one group may respect as sacred ground where their ancestors rest, another sees the mystical –and frequently evil– site of forces beyond their knowledge influenced by an ethnic Other. This paper explores this dual labeling of North American Indigenous burial sites through media by looking at representations of Mi’gmaq burial gravesites. In director Jeff Barnaby’s 2013 Rhymes for Young Ghouls, main character Aila (Devery Jacobs) confronts two burial sites that turn the mainstream stereotype on its head: that of her mother which situates Indigenous burials in a contemporary context and that of a mass grave of children at her residential school which places malintent on settler colonial practices. The film highlights Indigenous ways of coping with these practices including violence, substance abuse, and art. Dissimilarly, Pet Sematary’s (1989) plot involves no Mi’gmaq representation but follows non-Indigenous Louis (Dale Midkiff) as he interacts with a stereotypical Indian burial ground imbued with evil, unknown magic that leads to the inevitable downfall of his entire family. Both films interestingly include zombies, and they portray Indigenous burial spaces similarly as shot from above and filled with fog. However, their conclusive statements placing the blame behind the horror are vastly different.

Archaeological research conducted in the years 2012-2013 at Śródka in Poznań provided some crucial information that enriches our knowledge on the past of the city. During twenty years of excavations carried out in that area of the city we managed to unearth a large part of an early medieval burial ground where the inhabitants of the gord were buried from the end of the 10th century until the end of the 12th century. The location of the cemetery was preceded by resettlement of the residents of an extensive hamlet employed in craftsmanship and trade to new sites (another region of Śródka and perhaps also to the territory of Zagórze). Demarcation of the burial site most likely had a propaganda dimension connected with the process of constitution of Christian rites which also included the funeral sphere.Archaeological research conducted in the years 2012-2013 at Śródka in Poznań provided some crucial information that enriches our knowledge on the past of the city. It is the second workshop of this type unearthed by us on this site. It is worth underscoring that to date those are the oldest remnants of bell founding workshops in Poland evidenced by excavations.

Opis:
This paper deals with grave arrangements and constructions of the western enclave of the cultural complex of the South-eastern Urnfield cultures in its early (Piliny culture) and late phases (Kyjatice culture). The discussion is developed from a representative assemblage of finds from the almost completely excavated burial ground at Radzovce (dist. Lučenec) dated to the Middle and Late Bronze Ages. With 1334 excavated graves, this is amongst the largest cemeteries of the Urnfield period in Central Europe. This paper presents the analysis of types of grave arrangements (burial pits, graves marked with a stone) and of grave constructions (stones barrows, stone covering, stone boxes) in the context of grave inventories and the internal chronology of the burial ground. The five identified burial horizons are synchronous to stages BB2 (BC1) – HB

Opis:
The article presents the results of the research conducted so far on the early medieval burial ground at site 10 in Giecz. Over six seasons of research, 133 early medieval graves have been discovered. Graves of wooden construction or encased in stone, as well as graves with an unusual arrangement (the deceased bent on the side and on the stomach), with different orientation, or double graves of women with small children draw particular attention. In the majority of graves, grave goods were found such as coins, ornaments or household items (including pieces of unique character). These finds – together with 14C analyses conducted for 7 graves – made it possible to determine the chronology of the burial ground to the period dating from the beginning of the 11th century (or even the end of the 10th century) till the 13th century.

Due to availability of laser scanning results, new possibilities have emerged for studying areas overgrown with forests. On the border of Konin and Mogilno Districts, 13 new burial grounds have been discovered, with Kuyavian tombs representing the Funnel Beaker culture. The paper describes two of them – site 27 in Kownaty and site 24 in Góry. The burial ground in Góry is situated within the planned “Ościsłowo” open-pit lignite mine. It has been decided that the burial ground would be entered in the register of monuments of the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship so as to ensure its protection. Surveys were carried out to verify and delineate the boundaries of the site. As a result, 14 Kuyavian tombs, arranged in 4 groups, were identified in total. In addition, the finds included 1 barrow, a settlement and a settlement trace of the Lusatian culture in the form of a golden ornament. The burial ground in Góry is the last so well preserved burial ground with non-chamber graves of people of the Funnel Beaker culture in the eastern part of Greater Poland.
