Opis:
An annotated bibliography of academic works in the field of Bulgarian studies published in Poland between 1947 and 2012The bibliography of Bulgarian studies includes publications by Polish and foreign authors published in Poland in the period 1947–2012. The main language of the works cited in the bibliography is Polish, a small portion (approx. 5%) is written in Bulgarian. The following bibliography is of a subject selective nature. It takes into account monographs – excluding continuous publications the inclusion of which would involve the planning of work over several years at least. The scope of the bibliography is limited to scientific publications which include studies on Bulgarian literature, Bulgarian cultural studies and research on Bulgarian history and society. Bibliografia adnotowana naukowych prac bułgarystycznych wydanych w Polsce w latach 1947–2012Bibliografia bułgarystyczna obejmuje publikacje autorów polskich i zagranicznych, wydane na terenie Polski w latach 1947–2012.

The author analyzes the images of Paisii Hilendarski, printed on Bulgarian postage stamps. It is shown that in Bulgaria for a period of 92 years (1920–2012) a total of 10 postage stamps have been validated. They reflect the memory of the Bulgarians: both for Paisii and for Slavo-Bulgarian History. It is suggested that every Bulgarian cultural and historical age imposes its own rules on how to display the monk from Hilendar. The article follows the program of the project: ‘From one man’s lips to another’s ear’ … and all the way to the Internet’ (Project № FP-17 FlF-004/16.05.2017, Department for Scientific Research, Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski’).

The paper aims to study the realization of the nous declination in the Bulgarian dialects in Gora region. The relatively better registration of the nouns inflection to the names for persons and of the names for animals is given. In the other lexical groups of names only some traces from the declination are registered. That is typical feature of the Bulgarian language.

Opis:
Formally, Slavonic-Bulgarian History (Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya) of Paisius of Hilendar is a manifesto of the era and a source of knowledge for Bulgarians and other Slavic nations. However, the glorification of history and its prominent heroes, presented with the help of emotional rhetoric, indicates the educational and patriotic destiny of the work. Despite some factual inaccuracies, the work has become the second most important book after the Bible for the Bulgarian nation. The author also showed in it interesting facts that arouse discussions in contemporary science. The work cannot be named just a chronicle, because history in it not only enlightens, but is an indispensable foundation for statehood and national identity. The above statement leads to the conclusion that interest in work of Paisius is growing in European society, which underlines the rich past of the Slavs and is a symbol of the struggle of the Bulgarian people for its freedom.

The paper presents the work of Bulgarian literary critic and scholar Stefan Minchev (1874—1912). In his work Iz istorija na bylgarskija roman (From the History of Bulgarian Novel) created in 1908—1912, the author includes not only Bulgarian pieces, but also translated and adapted (pobalgareni) ones. The paper recounts Minchev’s project and attempts to answer the question about motivation of the literary scholar. Was it unreflective gesture, or rather treating it as a natural stage in history of the literary genre? Was it to gentrify young literature and language, or to show its weakness? And finally — was it based on already existing model or it was innovate, groundbreaking not only in the context of Bulgarian or Slavonic literary translation studies.

Opis:
While Bulgarian scholars concur that Bulgaria’s Law of Obligations and Contracts, which was enacted in 1950 and which is still in force today following cosmetic changes in the early 1990s, is an original Bulgarian legal text, archival and comparative research shows that it is heavily based on the Italian Codice Civile of 1942. Why would a communist country seek inspiration in a country with a Fascist ideology? Exploring the reasons behind this legislative choice as well as the reasons why this ‘dark’ secret was buried for so long challenges traditional taxonomies of comparative law, reveals the peculiar patterns of legal change, including the key role of the legal scholar in the process, and demonstrates the power of comparative law in shattering myths in legal history.

Opis:
The work is concentrated on the problem of war prisoners in the chronological period of the existance of the so-called First Bulgarian state. The analysis is based predominantly on various Byzantine and selected Latin and Bulgarian sources from the epoch. With some exceptions, mostly for 707/708, 754/755, 763/764 and 774, the notices are concentrated around the events of 811–815/816, 837/838; 894–896, 917–30s and for a moment or two from the period of 971–1018. In his preliminary remarks the author comes to the conclusion that in the Early Middle Ages prisoners of war (in the broadest medieval sense) were an integral part of the efforts to achieve the political objectives of the Bulgarian rulers. Response mechanisms against prisoners of war were highly dependent on the course of the conflict and their attitude towards their own warriors and subjects caught up in enemy hands. They included a wide range of solutions, which could be grouped into three main areas: the first one refers to killing (and/or mutilation) of war prisoners; the second main line was connected with preserving the lives of the captives; the third group of measures was due to the fact that an immediate effect is not always haunted.

Opis:
Analyzing various medieval Bulgarian hagiographical texts, inscriptions and marginal notes, as well as the Synodicon of the Bulgarian church and other evidence, the author aims to reveal the dynastic concepts of the second Bulgarian Tsardom (1186–1396) and literary attempts to create and support a complex dynastic idea with the means of medieval Bulgarian history writing. Such attempts were connected with two core ideas. Firstly, the state’s foundation was represented as a personal merit of two Asens – father and son. Asen “the Old” adopting the throne name John marked the beginning of the Asens’ Tsardom liberating the Bulgarians from “the Greek slavery” and transferring to his stronghold Tărnovo from Sredets – the center of the Byzantine power over Bulgaria – the relics of St. John of Rila. John Asen “the Great”, his son, strengthened the Tsardom with his victories, returned the status of Patriarchy to the Bulgarian church and brought the relics of St. Parasceve to the capital Tărnovo. Secondly, the literary tradition shaped the image of the Bulgarian Tsardom as an ever-lasting Empire whose enduring attributes – Sceptre and Throne – were given by God to change the mortal monarchs.

Bulgarian Reformation? On hybridization of ideas in the process of modernization of cultureThe paper raises the question of the Bulgarian notion of Reformation both as a particular historical event and its local reinterpretations and adaptations. The focus is on the history of the concepts of “Reformation” and “Protestant propaganda” in Bulgarian culture as well as on the cultural influences of the protestant thought in nineteenth-century Bulgaria. Particular interest is given to the Bulgarian scientific discourse, especially the Marxist one, as a dominant in the Bulgarian historiography. The paper studies in depth the case of Todor Ikonomov (1835–1892), a Bulgarian enlightener involved in religious and Church matters during the National Revival, perceived as an example of meaningful hybridization of ideas of Protestant and Enlightenment origins. The main question is about the relation between secular and religious power, and thus between religion and nation, as a sign of the Modern thinking.

This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book България – страна на розите, published in 2018. The book consists of three parts – a phototypical copy of the first Polish edition of the collective book from 1938, a translation of this edition into Bulgarian language with biographies of the authors of the texts and several studies, dedicated to Metodi Konstantinov (the 1938’s edition editor), to Polish-Bulgarian political and cultural relations in the late 1930s and their local repercussions in Poznań and last but not least – to the language of the first edition and its translation and re-translation. The aim of the publication – to remind the first edition of the book, to make it accessible for Bulgarian readers and to restore the memory about its authors and editors – is thoroughly fulfilled. Moreover, an additional advantage of the book is that it makes its readers more aware of the difference in Bulgarians’ self-representational practices before and after the Second World War.

The article aims to represent a recently recovered anthology about Bulgaria printed in Poznan, Poland, in 1938. Inspired by Diana Crane’s idea of the invisible colleges the authors retrace the intercommunication within a circle of researchers interested in promoting Bulgaria abroad. The revisited and almost unknown until now biography of the main editor of the book – Metody Konstantinov – is an avenue of approach to the specific paradigm that connects all the participants in the anthology. A short summary of the anthologised articles encompasses several main linguistic problems concerning the retrieving of the texts.

The publication is focused around seven significant topics: Free Time; Self-presentation; Education; Revolutionary Attributes; Weapons, Banners, Signs; Religious Symbols; Memory Objects, with the objects being presented via images and short descriptions. The central approach used to introduce the objects is anthropological. It establishes the main code for deciphering the meaning of the artifacts – a glimpse into history through the medium of the personal story and moments that have been preserved in human memory. Dora Gabe’s concept of translation as a product and creative practice was formed by her cooperation with one of the most prominent Bulgarian scholars – Boyan Penev. Later on, after Penev’s death, the poetess has changed and modified her understanding of the process of translation significantly. In this article the author claims that a corporeal experience of the process of translation, spontaneity and a consciously recognized need to cooperate with the author are the most important characteristics of Gabe’s own translational project. Gabe’s long-lasting correspondence with Anna Kamieńska shows all those characteristics and proves that in the late period of Gabe’s work translation was a way to establish a feeling of com-munion and transgress her cultural and artistic identity.

The article presents the experience of a team of lexicographers from the Institute of the Bulgarian Language at the BAS using modern technologies to develop a lexicographic resource based on a digitized version of one of the most significant achievements of Bulgarian lexicography in the third quarter of the 20th century – the three-volume “Dictionary of the Modern Bulgarian Literary Language”. The Dictionary, published in the period 1955–1959, reflects the state of norms of the Bulgarian language from the middle of the last century. In a number of respects it has already lost relevance. This necessitates a partial revision and modernization of its content and bringing it into line with modern language norms. The article reveals the place of the “Dictionary of the Modern Bulgarian Literary Language” in the history of Bulgarian lexicography, briefly presents the main principles for compiling the dictionary and the peculiarities of the microstructure of the dictionary. It also comments on issues related to the conversion of the printed edition into an electronic lexicographic resource, which can be used not only as a source of information about the semantics and usage of the main part of the modern Bulgarian vocabulary, but also for research purposes.
