Opis:
In traditional Bulgarian culture, sweet things are good. Sweet foods, both raw and processed, are peculiar cultural signs containing archaic symbolic and mythological content. Hence their significant role in beliefs as well as family and social customs (cf. a strong link between honey and korovay, a kind of pie). Sweet food is a frequent attribute of ritualistic hosting. Sweet things serve as links with the world of ancestors, the term for sweet is used as a euphemism for demons (sladki medeni, blagi medeni, etc.). In healing magic, honey and sugar are used to diagnose and prevent illnesses, especially communicable diseases like chickenpox; sweet water is poured over impure places. In folk Bulgarian culture, sweet products of rich symbolic content exhibit specific geography: they are a distinctive feature of the Balkan culture in the south of the country. At the semiotic. level, sweet in Bulgarian culture is not only present in oppositions of the type „sweet : sour” or „sweet : salty”, but also in „pleasant : unpleasant” or even more generally „good : not good”, „good : bad”.

This text examines the reception of Polish literature into professional Bulgarian publications for literature and art. It submits to a discussion the following sources: The special issue of „Literaturen westnik” („Literary Weekly”) entitled Polish Literature of the Nineties, no.11 (22.—28.03.2000), devoted entirely to the changes occurred in Polish literature and artistic life at the end of the past century; and no. 18 (8.—14.05.2002) of the same journal presents under the title Polish Nike, presents the most prestigious Polish literary award and its laureates during the years 1997—2002. Mentioned above jurnal „Literaturen westnik” („Literary Weekly”) had two more special issues: Literature on Heel‑ or Better Literature, no. 35 (2.—8.11), and Literature before the Mirror or Better Literature, no. 6 (15.— 21.02), published in 2006, both focused on Polish women’s feminist writers. The article takes also into account the issue of „Panorama”, no. 3 (2002), which gives an overview of Polish literature translated into Bulgarian after 1989. Included into this discussion is the periodical „Kritika”, no. 3— 4 (2006); it gives a survey of the most interesting statements of Polish literary critical thought in the same period, that is, after 1989. Similarly, the „Slavianski dialozi” („Slavic Dialogues”), no. 8 (2007), that presents some most important ways of development in contemporary Polish culture.

Разглеждайки го списъка на преведените през последните петдесет годин книги от български на полски очевидно е, че след 1989 година броят на артистичните преводи систематично и драматично намалява. Причината на тези негативни тенденции трябва да се търси в крайно неразбираема културна политика — отлагане на съответните институции задалженията си да се подкрепя междукултурен диалог. Очевидно е, че без структурните промяни (подкрепящи активно действаши преводачи) няма шанс за прогресивните промяни.
After 1989 the number of translations of Bulgarian literature into Polish decreased dramatically in comparison with the output of the previous 50 years. On the one hand, this seems to be caused by a complete change of the Polish state’s cultural policy principles, too little activity on the part of relevant institutions, or even giving up the obligation to create and support the inter‑cultural dialogue or to mediate in this process. On the other hand, it is primarily market economy and interest of the media and not the efforts or commitment of the translators that are decisive factors for the number and quality of publications.

Обект на внимание в статията са трансформациите, извършени в полския превод на приказката "Тримата братя, ябълката и ламята", публикувана в сборника "Złota moneta za słowo. Bułgarskie bajki i legendy ludowe" (избор и увод Георги Минчев, Лодз 2006).
The article discusses translation transformations in Polish version of the Bulgarian fairy tale "Trzej bracia i złote jabłko" (Three Brothers and the Golden Apple). The fairy tale has been published in the collection "Złota moneta za słowo. Bułgarskie bajki i legendy ludowe" (Golden Coin for a Word. Bulgarian Fairy Tales and Legends — selection and introduction by Georgi Minczew, Lodz 2006). The main subject of the analysis is aesthetic code of the translation — the ways the translator has shown specific features of the oral text such as repetitions, forms and clichés. The author of the article is particulary focused on traformations on syntactic level (transformations in statements structures, changes in words order and text segmentation). The choices made by the translator prove that he wasn’t fully aware what literature genre he is translating. As the result, the translation is lacking essential for folk texts, and for fairy tale in particular, stylistic features which appear in the original.

Тънко я преда. Свърши се вашата, etc. Their reference to sentences such as Свършихме я тази работа. allows interpreting the function of the phrase as thematic. This type of sentences was confronted with examples such as Тя му я изтърси една… И ти ми ги говориш едни… The features of intonation and the semantic features of the double object phrase indicate its rhematic nature. Specific formal traits of such sentences, including the usage of the exponents of the category of definiteness / indefiniteness, are related with their expressive markedness.

Multi-volume Polish-Bulgarian Confrontative GrammarPolish-Bulgarian Confrontative Grammar (GKBP) is the first and so far the only expanded attempt to make the semantic confrontation with the gradually developed interlanguage. GKBP consists of 9 volumes which were published in 12 volumen. It was decided to arrange the description of Polish-Bulgarian confrontative grammar in the direction from the contents to the form. The semantic interlanguage enabled the emergence of two equivalent grammars: the grammar of the modern Bulgarian language and the grammar of the modern Polish language. The analysis of semantic categories, which was applied in GKBP, ensures the coherent confrontative description, irrespective of whether the described languages have grammatical exponent of meanings or not. GKBP falls into the stream of modern theoretical confrontative research based on the logical theory of quantification, on the modern theory of processes titled „Petri nets”, and on the theory of logical predicate-argument structures. Our research removes the exact division into grammatical and lexical levels, thanks to which our research has introduced a lot of new observations of the examined phenomena. Universal semantic linguistic categories such as the time, the modality, the definiteness / the indefiniteness and the semantic case – which are essential for the language description, but have not yet been examined and have not been sufficiently described in the academic grammars of the Polish and Bulgarian languages – have been selected. The sequence of description in this synthesis was established not on the basis of order of developed volumes of GKBP, but on the basis of the generally accepted order of elements of the semantic structure of the sentence. The most external in the semantic structure of the sentence is its modal characteristics. Thereafter, the time, quantifiers and their order in the semantic structure of the sentence as well as the predicate-argument items are placed. Therefore, it is not an abbreviated summary of the issues analyzed in GKBP volumes. It is the description of selected semantic categories organized in accordance with the semantic order of the semantic structure of the Polish and Bulgarian sentences.

As we know, translation of legal texts requires maximum fidelity and does not allow arbitrary interpretation. This kind of translation is relatively easy as long as the systems of both languages did not show major differences in the gramaticalization of individual contents. In the case of the Bulgarian-Polish translations the biggest problems relate to the differences between the temporal systems of those languages, and differences in the expression of imperceptive modality. The article is devoted to this particular issues.

Opis:
In the last two decades bulgarian literary scholars make a lot of new researches focused on Botev’s poetry works. The main aim of the new analysis is the re-reading and re-interpretation of Botev’s poetic legacy. Referring to the findings of the bulgarian literary studies this article undertake the task to describe the paradigm of bulgarian revival poetry, considering Botev’s lyrical achievements as representative of this literary period. Botev is inspired from the wealth of folk traditions, he is proving his own mastery in transposition of folk designs into the new bulgarian poetry. Thematically much of the lines illustrates the pessimistic vision of the oppressed nation, which remain for several centuries under the influence of the turkish domination. The poetic imagination of tormented mother-country Bulgaria is precisely related to this concept. In this context, the poet considers as a duty to promote the patriotic idea, he becomes a teacher of his own generation, and uses poetic texts to express his social philosophy. A lirycal subject repeatedly identifies himself with the figure of a haiduk – brave fighter, rebel and revolutionary - explaining his own existence in the messianic terms. Botev’s poetry gives many original impulses in shaping the modern bulgarian poetry.

This article is an attempt to read the cycle Писма и фотографии (Letters and photographs) of bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov (part of Писма до Гаустин) as the overall project, whose main idea is to "recover" the travel, to give it a new unusual dimension, by "losing way" in spaces designated by various sites of the foreign countries. Nomad, in opposite to Bauman's tourist or vagabond, is a traveler, for whom moving is not a goal in itself. Nomad is not homeless. He identifies with the place in which he resides, he explore it and leaves it (but not abandon). He has specific kind of respect for the land on which he settled (but not possessed). The metaphor of the nomad means free crossing of the broadly defined boundaries and a certain periodicity, originally associated with the cycle of nature and the seasons. The analyze of Gospodinov's Писма и фотографии shows that subject in Писма до Гаустин can be recognized as a nomadic.

Different types of relations between the languages under comparison suggest possible directions for further comparative study. The comparison aims to identify differences and similarities in the componential structure, formal-grammatical structure, word formation structure, form variantivity, origin and formal status. The study may also testify to the presence of linguistic convergence processes in the multilingual European Union.

This paper deals with the issue of identity development of Bulgarian Muslims – one of the minorities in Bulgaria. The basic assumption is that their ethnic (collective) identity has been developed as multiple identities under the primordial, modern, and postmodern features, circumstances and phenomena originated in the historical, political, cultural and socioeconomic environment and relations of power and dominance. Presenting the stories of three representatives of the Bulgarian Muslims minority the paper focuses on how European integration challenges their identity: their limited experiences in Europe were collected as a result of an attempt to escape the economic situation in the country, to get out of the traumas they feel with respect to the Bulgarian majority. Their stories present an interesting mixture of imagination and personal impressions of Europe. The paper explores the use of the qualitative method of autobiographical interview as a method for studding identity construction and development.

Opis:
The article deals with a Bulgarian translation of Czesław Miłosz’s poem Child of Europe. The author of the translation, Katia Mitova, was a well-known interpreter of Polish literature and an expert in literature. The translation itself, which appeared in fifty numbered copies, forms a separate bibliophile edition (the illustrator of the volume was Jan Libenstein). The article discusses the aspects connected with the elitism of the edition in the context of interesting Bulgarian bibliophile tradition observed in the interwar period, but also in connection with ambiguous and difficult to understand concepts found in the poem written by the Polish Noble Prize Laureate. The author of the article focuses on the very concept of Europe as it appears in the poem and its connotations to the essence of human intelligence and cogni-tion. Additionally, the article presents various aspects of irony regarded as a form of speech, important not only in the process of appropriate comprehension of this poetic work. In translation, it also helps to attain the correct interpretation of the ideological and artistic contents of the poem.

Opis:
The present article is focused on the newest compounds with the foreign element homo-/xoмo-- and gej-/гeй- in Polish and Bulgarian languages. The source of language material are mainly Polish and Bulgarian press texts. The morphological structure of the compound types under discussion is described. Difficulties regarding the classification of new structures are stressed. Semantic analysis is introduced in the form of a proposal for deifinitons of the first components of the compound. In order to document the contexts of use of the lexemes (indirectly, the frequency of derivates and productivity of series), an Internet search query is performed. Essential differences between productivity and functioning of both types of compounds in the languages under discussion are described. Formal and semantic properties of the compounds, which may have a significant impact on the significant presence of such formations in the media language, are specified.
