Opis:
The ‘breath figures’ method was used to prepare nitrocellulose (NC) microspheres and N-butyl-N-(2-nitroxyethyl)nitramine (BuNENA) modified NC microspheres (BMNM). By using acetone as the solvent and non-solvent n-hexane as the atmosphere, NC microspheres and BMNM were obtained. The matching of solvents and non-solvents was the key factor influencing the final morphology. TG and DSC were employed to study the thermal decomposition characteristics of BMNM. The results suggested that there were two distinct stages of thermal mass loss from the BMNM: the first was the mass loss associated with partial volatilisation of BuNENA, and its activation energy was 68.54 kJ/mol. The second mass loss was the thermal decomposition of NC and residual BuNENA with a high activation energy (249.53 kJ/mol, calculated by the Kissinger method). According to the thermal decomposition kinetics model, the optimal kinetics model of BMNM was B1-A2. The addition of BuNENA did not influence the thermal decomposition of NC.

Opis:
Modification of cast double base propellants is somewhat of an art form. Obtaining a final propellant grain that has the right balance between energetic liquids and solid ingredients with the desired properties requires great effort. Four formulations of a modified cast double base propellant with different RDX contents have been prepared. A combination of BuNENA and DNDA57 energetic plasticizers has been used to overcome the problems that occur with a high nitroglycerin content. The effect of the RDX content on the burning behaviour, activation energies, and sensitivity to impact has been studied. Burning rate measurements have been performed using a closed bomb SV-2 to investigate the burning behaviour under a wide range of operating pressures. DTA and DSC thermal analysis were conducted to evaluate the thermal behaviour of the prepared modified double base propellants. The results showed that the formulation with only the combined plasticizer has the highest burning rate and activation energy and the lowest sensitivity to impact.

Opis:
In this work, the energetic plasticizer N-n-butyl-N-(2-nitroxyethyl)nitramine (Bu-NENA) was used as a deterrent coating for a triple base propellant (TBP) that finds application in large caliber guns. Closed vessel (CV) evaluation was performed to study the ballistic performance of the deterred propellant. A TBP containing nitrocellulose (NC), nitroglycerine (NG) and nitroguanidine (NQ) was coated with an energetic plasticizer using a solution of Bu-NENA. The Bu-NENA coated propellant exhibited inhibition to burning resulting in a reduction in the values of the ballistic parameters viz. (dP/dt)max, burning rate coefficient (β) and relative vivacity (RV), while the pressure index (α) and rise time were increased. The trends obtained during this work display the potential of Bu-NENA as deterrent.

Opis:
The present investigation focused on the synthesis of 2-[butyl(nitro)amino]ethyl nitrate (n-BuNENA), by the nitration of N-butylethanolamine. For this purpose, various nitrating agents were studied and N-nitropyridinium nitrate was found to be a good nitrating agent. Short reaction time, ease of handling, performance of the reaction in one step and good yield are the main aspects of the present method. It also lead to 75% yield, which is a higher yield than by other methods. The purity of the product was evaluated by HPLC analysis, and its identity was confirmed by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Opis:
The correlation between the mechanical properties of hydroxyl-terminated polyether (HTPE)/N-butyl-N-(2-nitroxyethyl)nitramine (Bu-NENA) binders with different plasticization ratios (pl/po), varied from 0.9 to 1.5, have been studied. The very early stage of evaporation of Bu-NENA from the HTPE/Bu-NENA binder, with a pl/po ratio of 1.2, has been investigated. The results revealed that the pl/po ratio has strong influences on the mechanical properties. When the pl/po ratio was 1.2, the mechanical properties of the HTPE/Bu-NENA binder were satisfactory, the maximum tensile strength and the elongation at break being 2.39 MPa and 93.27%, respectively. The evaporation rate constant of Bu-NENA from HTPE/Bu-NENA binder with a pl/po ratio of 1.2 increased from 0.31·10–5 to 2.32·10–5 s–1 as the temperature was increased from 50 to 90 °C. The value of the activation energy of evaporation was 51.47 kJ/mol and its pre-exponential factor was 6.14·102 s–1.
