Opis:: The paper is focused on determination of the accuracy and reliability of static and dynamic (portable) hardness testers. The paper deals with the measurement of hardness of calibration hardness plates by 4 different methods (Brinell, Vickers, Rockwell and Leeb) with using 5 different hardness testers (3 static and 2 portable). The hardness values measured by the different hardness testers were compared to the reference hardness listed in the calibration hardness plates and consequently, the accuracy of these measurements was evaluated. The aim of the work has been to determine the accuracy and reliability of portable hardness testers in comparison with static hardness testers.

Opis:: In the current investigation, two primary indicators, including the average roughness (AR) and Brinell hardness (BH) of the roller burnishing operation are enhanced using the optimal inputs (the spindle speed-S, feed rate-f, and depth of penetration-D). The performance measures are developed using the Kriging approach and optimal outcomes are generated by the Crow Search Algorithm (CSA). The optimal outcomes generated by the CSA of the S, f, and D were 832 rpm, 112 mm/min, and 0.12 mm, while the AR was reduced by 37.0% and the BH was increased by 29.9%, respectively. The optimal findings could be utilized in the practice for enhancing the burnished quality and to develop a professional system related to the roller burnishing operation. The Kriging-based AR and BH correlations could be used to present nonlinear experimental data. The optimizing technique could be utilized to deal with optimizing problems for different machining operations.

Opis:: Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum, commonly named ayous in Cameroon, is a tree typical of secondary forests in subtropical areas mainly below 500 msl, characterized by an uneven distribution of annual rainfall and the presence of disturbance. This species is widely used in the origin area, and the interest of European markets for ayous wood has steadily increased in the last decades. Despite the interest, only a few studies explored the characterization of this wood for its Cameroonian provenience. This study was carried out to provide a general overview of the available information and to determine some selected physical and mechanical properties of ayous wood coming from the department of Boumba et Ngoko in South-east Cameroon. Physical and mechanical properties and colourimetric parameters of ayous wood were determined following the UNI EN and ISO standards to characterize this wood and to compare with the data from literature. Density, 393 kg/m3, resulted consistent with the data reported in the literature; the basic density was lower than those reported in the literature and the difference could be related to wood porosity; volumetric shrinkage was among the lower ones detected by other authors. Colourimetric parameters describing the undifferentiated creamy-yellow colour of the wood were L* 73.08, a* 7.39, b* 27.88. Mechanical properties were in the wide range of data reported by other authors; compression strength 36.6 MPa, static bending strength 61.1 MPa and Brinell hardness 12.2 N/mm2. These results extend our knowledge on the physical, colorimetric and mechanical properties of the ayous wood. These results can be helpful to highlight differences in the physical and mechanical properties due to the influence of origin on wood physical and mechanical properties. Future studies on this topic are needed to better understand the changes in properties and the characterization of the Cameroonian provenance. The results on the properties of ayous wood give an account of the real possibilities of treatments and technologies that can improve the technological characteristics and the environmentally sustainable use of this resource for the origin and importing countries.

Opis:: The effect of adding zirconium (Zr) as an alloying element to Al-Cu-Mg alloy on the hardness and corrosion of this alloy was investigated. The hardness and polarization test results of samples treated for various periods by aging at 423.15 K for 3hr showed a significant increment in the Brinell hardness (HBW) improvement ratio of 115.6% (from 45HBW to 97HBW) and an extreme reduction the corrosion rate of the alloy after Zr adding decrease in the current density by 79.42% (from 56.50 µA cm-2 to 11.63 µA cm-2) with aging for 3 hr compared to the base alloy. The impact of this addition is also reflected in the strengthening, recrystallization, and modification of the grain microstructure. These changes were clearly demonstrated by microscopic testing and proves that the addition of Zr has a considerable synergistic effect causing inhibition of recrystallization and refinement of grain size.

Opis:: Silumins (i.e., alloys where the main alloy additive is silicon) are the largest casting aluminum alloy group. Materials of this kind are characterized by high strength properties, high corrosion resistance, and low density, which make it possible to use them for construction purposes. A new group of developed properties typical for casting silumins are electrical and thermal conductivity. Thermal and electrical conductivity can be optimized by the suitable selection of chemical composition of the alloy, in the process of precipitation hardening, or by means of a combination of both. The present paper includes test results of the strength and electrical properties of AlSiMg casting aluminum alloys. The alloys that were subject to testing were AlSi5Mg1, AlSi7Mg1, and AlSi11Mg1. Heat treatment included homogenization at a temperature of 535°C over a time period of 8 h, quenched, and artificial aging. The strength tests involved a Brinell hardness measurement as well as an electrical properties test involving electrical conductivity measurement tests.
Siluminy, czyli stopy aluminium z głównym dodatkiem stopowym w postaci krzemu, stanowią jedną z największych grup odlewniczych stopów aluminium. Materiały tego rodzaju charakteryzują się między innymi wysokimi własnościami wytrzymałościowymi, wysoką odpornością na działanie środowiska korozyjnego czy niskim ciężarem właściwym, co pozwala na ich stosowanie w celach konstrukcyjnych. Grupą własności odlewniczych stopów aluminium, nad którą aktualnie trwają intensywne badania są własności elektryczne oraz, powiązane z nimi, własności cieplne. Własności te można optymalizować przez odpowiedni dobór składu chemicznego stopów, wykorzystanie zjawiska utwardzania wydzieleniowego czy też w wyniku kombinacji obu metod. Niniejsza praca opisuje wyniki badań nad kształtowaniem własności wytrzymałościowych i elektrycznych odlewniczych stopów Al-Si-Mg. W badaniach wykorzystano trzy stopy o oznaczeniach AlSi5Mg1, AlSi7Mg1 oraz AlSi11Mg1. Materiały zostały poddane operacjom obróbki cieplnej w postaci homogenizacji w temperaturze 535°C przed 8 h, przesycaniu do wody oraz starzeniu sztucznemu. W ramach określenia własności wytrzymałościowych wykonano pomiary twardości analizowanych stopów przy użyciu metody Brinella. Własności elektryczne określono za pomocą pomiaru przewodności elektrycznej.

Opis:: Analysis of the wood properties of Dicorynia guianensis Amsh. in the context of using in outdoor architecture. This article deals with the analysis angélique wood (Dicorynia guianensis Amsh.) properties to verify suitability for use in the arrangement of external architecture such as the construction of terraces. Particularly, tests included determination of hardness by the Brinell method and total and partial shrinkage. The presented characteristic of properties was complemented by the analysis of wood colour stability during exposition to natural weathering factors for six months. Changes of particular colour parameters (lightness L*, chroma C*, hue h) were determine as well as the total colour change ΔE*. The colour stability was examined on untreated wood surface as well as on wood finished with clear and colouring oils. It was found that the angélique wood belongs to the group of very heavy wood (specific gravity 807 kg/m3) and is characterized by the favourable technical parameters, primarily the high hardness (average hardness 45,64 MPa). Furthermore, the angélique wood is the wood of average shrinkage (average total shrinkage 14,37%). Dimensional stability does not differ from the properties of wood commonly and successfully used for wooden external construction. The results showed that during external exposition angélique wood became darker. Using wood surface protection preparations such as oils resulted in the slowing down the weathering processes effects.
Analiza właściwości drewna Dicorynia guianensis Amsh. w kontekście jego wykorzystania w architekturze zewnętrznej. W ramach pracy dokonano analizy właściwości drewna angélique (Dicorynia guianensis Amsh.) w celu weryfikacji przydatności do zastosowania w aranżacji architektury zewnętrznej, takiej jak budowa tarasów. Zakresem badań objęto określenie twardości metodą Brinella oraz skurczu całkowitego i częściowego drewna. Przedstawiona charakterystyka właściwości została uzupełniona o analizę stabilności barwy drewna w czasie jego półrocznej ekspozycji na naturalne czynniki atmosferyczne. Określono zmiany poszczególnych parametrów barwy (jasność L*, nasycenie C*, odcień h) oraz całkowitą zmianę barwy ΔE*. Stabilność koloru badano na powierzchni drewna niczym niezabezpieczonego, a także na drewnie pokrytym olejem bezbarwnym i barwiącym. Stwierdzono, że drewno angélique należy do grupy drewna bardzo ciężkiego (gęstość średnia 807 kg/m3) i charakteryzuje się korzystnymi parametrami technicznymi, przede wszystkim wysoką twardością (średnia twardość 45,64 MPa). Ponadto drewno angélique jest średniokurczliwym (średni skurcz całkowity 14,37%). Stabilność wymiarowa nie odbiega od właściwości drewna powszechnie i z powodzeniem stosowanego w drewnianych konstrukcjach zewnętrznych. Wyniki pokazały, że podczas ekspozycji zewnętrznej drewno angélique ciemnieło. Stosowanie preparatów do ochrony powierzchni drewna takich jak oleje spowodowało spowolnienie efektów procesu starzenia, spowodowane czynnikami zewnętrznymi.

Opis:: High-pressure die casting results in a high quality surface and good mechanical properties of castings. Under the effect of pressure, integral and solid castings are achieved without a large number of foundry defects. The correct and proper setting of technological parameters plays a very important role in minimizing casting defects. The aim of the presented article is to determine the optimum maximum piston velocity for a casting in the high-pressure casting process with two height variants, depending on their internal quality. It is because the internal quality of particular castings is important in terms of proper functionality in operations where the biggest problem is the porosity of the casting. The main cause of porosity formation is the decreasing solubility of gases (most often hydrogen) during the melt solidification. Solubility represents the maximum amount of gas that can dissolve in a metal under equilibrium conditions of temperature and pressure. Macroporosity and microporosity were determined from the sections of the surfaces in the determined zones of the castings. Here, the results was that the macroporosity decreased with increasing piston velocity. Ideal microstructure was evaluated at a piston velocity of 3 m/s for both types of castings. On the other hand, the increase in tube size has shown that velocities of 3 m/s and higher, the tube is more prone to macroporosity formation. The highest hardness was achieved at the piston velocity of 2 m/s at both tube lengths.

Opis:: In practice, in the design stage of revitalization, renovation or reinforcement, there is often a need to determine the strength of steel as well as its weldability. The strength of steel can be determined in two ways: directly through destructive testing or indirectly - by the Brinell hardness test. In the case of weldability, this turns out to be much more difficult, because there are three groups of factors which determine this property, i.e.: local weldability, operative weldability, and overall weldability. This paper presents the results of the verification of the relationship between the hardness and strength of three grades of steel from the early twentieth century. The evaluation of the overall weldability of structural steels is discussed in an analytical approach preceding costly weldability tests. An assessment based on selected indicators of weldability can only lead to confusion.
Często w praktyce inżynierskiej na etapie projektu rewitalizacji, remontu lub wzmocnienia konstrukcji pojawia się konieczność wyznaczenia wytrzymałości stali oraz określenia jej spawalności. O ile wytrzymałość stali można określić na dwa sposoby: bezpośredni, poprzez badania niszczące odpowiednio dużej liczby próbek pobranych z konstrukcji lub pośredni - poprzez badania twardości Brinella, to w przypadku spawalności okazuje się to dużo trudniejsze. Bowiem o tej właściwości decydują trzy grupy czynników: metalurgiczne, konstrukcyjne i technologiczne. W referacie przestawiono doświadczenia związane z zależnością między twardością a wytrzymałością trzech gatunków stali historycznych pochodzących z końca XIX i początku XX wieku. Otrzymane dla nich średnie współczynniki granicy plastyczności oraz wytrzymałości na rozciąganie porównano ze współczynnikami podawanymi w literaturze technicznej dla stali konstrukcyjnych. Omówiono także ocenę spawalności stali konstrukcyjnych w ujęciu analitycznym, poprzedzającą próby spawalności. Na przykładzie przedstawiono, że ocena spawalności jedynie na podstawie kilku wybranych wskaźnikach spawalności, może prowadzić do pomyłek. Należy pamiętać, że wskaźniki spawalności pozwalają wstępnie ocenić jedynie spawalność metalurgiczną (jedną ze składowych spawalności). Wiarygodny wniosek o dostatecznej spawalności stali można wyciągnąć wyłącznie po dodatkowym przeprowadzeniu badań spawalności konstrukcyjnej i technologicznej.

Opis:: W artykule zweryfikowano energetycznie twardość Brinella materiałów konstrukcyjnych. Badania realizowano w Akademii Marynarki Wojennej w Gdyni przy użyciu oprzyrządowanych maszyn wytrzymałościowych MTS 810.12 i FU 1000. Analiza wykresów siła — głębokość odcisku służyła do wyznaczenia energii właściwych odkształceń sprężystych, plastycznych i całkowitych absorbowanych przez materiał. Energie właściwe wyznaczono przez podzielenie odpowiednich wartości energii przez objętość odkształceń całkowitych, sprężystych oraz plastycznych odcisku.
This article presents energy-based verification of Brinell hardness in construction materials. The investigations were conducted at the Naval Academy in Gdynia using testing machines MTS 810.12 and FU 1000. The analysis of force-indentation depth diagrams was used to determine proper energies of elastic, plastic and total strains being absorbed by the material. In order to determine the proper energies the appropriate energy values were divided by the volume of total, elastic and plastic strains of the indentation.
