Opis:
Many bridges in The Netherlands are meanwhile 40-50 years old. Those bridges have been designed according to old design codes, which do not reflect the state of the art of today anymore. Moreover, the traffic loads have been increased substantially. If those bridges are recalculated according to modern design codes they often do not fulfill the safety standards. In spite of that, those bridges mostly do not show significant distress, which denies the results of the analysis. Obviously there are hidden reserves in bearing capacity. To detect and quantify these is an important task.

Opis:
Modular Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) according to the revised IMO performance standards on INS combine and integrate the validated information of different sensors and functions and allow the presentation on the various displays according to the tasks. The aim of the investigations discussed within this paper was to assess the advantages of an INS design compared to a traditional bridge layout with respect to the execution of collision avoidance and route monitoring tasks. The Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) approach was applied to assess Situation Awareness (SA) during these operations while bridge design and out of window visibility were manipulated. Additionally, workload was measured by NASA-TLX with its six subscales. The experiment was conducted in a full immersive simulation environment with 26 experienced mariners. The results indicate that SA is significantly higher with the INS bridge design in the reduced visibility condition compared to the traditional bridge design. Also, tendencies were found that workload and subdimensions are influenced by bridge design and visibility conditions.

Opis:
Structural design requirements for flexible culverts are available in several international bridge design codes. Examples are the Canadian (CHBDC), the American (AASHTO) and the Swedish (TRVK Bro ll2). The designation “flexible culvert” may today be somewhat misleading. The word culvert is usually associated with small pipes in road embankments. However, over the years flexible culverts have grown bigger and a more proper designation would be bridges. Therefore, these structures are often also referred to as Soil-Steel Composite Bridges or just Soil-Steel Bridges. With this development also new and more stringent requirements on the structural design follows. In this paper key aspects of a holistic design approach based on the authors experience on the essentials of flexible culvert structural design3 are outlined and is compared to the current design approaches in the CHBDC and the TRVK Bro 11. However, this paper will provide insight into how the holistic design topics are addressed in current design codes and future research and development.

Opis:
Navigation is a complex interaction between human, organizational, environmental, and technological factors on the ship’s bridge. Today, ships bridges include a broad suite of equipment with both digital and analogue interfaces, covering a range of functions and purposes. Suboptimal usability in equipment and interface design as well as layout of the ships bridge has been reported by researchers for decades. This paper aims to contribute to our understanding of why there has been limited progression in usability in ship bridge design over the last decades, by investigating the stakeholders’ different perspectives of their influence, interest and responsibility for usability in ship bridge design. The study is based on interviews with seafarers, shipowners, equipment manufacturers, shipyard, insurance companies, classification societies and a flag state. Usability in navigational equipment and systems on a ship’s bridge is required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) SOLAS Regulation V/15. We find that this goal-based requirement is challenging to follow up both in design, development, and survey work. To achieve usability in maritime equipment and bridge systems ideally requires the actively involvement of end-users throughout the design and development process. We find that the seafarers, the direct end-users, do not have a clear voice in the ship bridge and bridge equipment design and the associated purchasing processes. The other stakeholders appear to recognize the existing shortcomings, and some do show interest in improvements, but the responsibility for usability seem to be fragmented, and they see the potential solutions as being somebody else’s problem. We conclude by suggesting both long-term and a short-term way forward for improving usability in ship bridge design.

Opis:
Human error remains the most common cause of marine incidents and it is worth emphasizing that navigator’s performance is directly affected by ergonomic factors on the bridge. Studies regarding influence of bridge design and work environment on the operator are rare, thus the main purpose of this paper is to fill in this gap. Documents issued by recognized organizations, research publications and additional sources were reviewed to check if navigators obtain enough support in this area and what should be improved. It was found that present ergonomic guidelines for the bridge design require revision and there is a need for making the regulations more meaningful and direct. The main documents that require reworking include Guidelines on Ergonomics Criteria for Bridge Equipment and Layout, International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) as well as selected parts of SOLAS V/15 regulation.

Opis:
The article presents parametric analysis regarding the impact of subgrade and backfill stiffness on values and distribution of bending moments in the structural elements of a small integral box bridge made of cast in situ reinforced concrete. The analyzed parameters are the modulus of subgrade reaction under and behind the bridge structure (kv kh). At the beginning, the author presents the integral box bridge and selected parts of the bridge design. In particular, the author focuses on the method of modeling of the subgrade stiffness parameters under and behind the bridge structure, as well as their impact on the values and distribution of bending moments in the bridge structural elements. The bridge was designed by the author and built on the M9 motorway between the towns of Waterford and Kilcullen in Ireland. In conclusions, the author shares his knowledge and experience relating to the design of small integral bridges and culverts and puts forward recommendations as to further research on these type of structures in Poland.

Opis:
Developing new software components for ship bridges is challenging. Mostly due to high costs of testing these components in realistic environments. To reduce these costs the development process is divided into different stages. Whereas, the final test on a real ship bridge is the last step in this process. However, by dividing the development process into different stages new components have to be adapted to each stage individually. To improve the process we propose a mobile ship bridge system to fully support the development process from lab studies to tests in realistic environments. Our system allows developing new software components in the lab and setting it up on a ship bridge without interfering with the vesselʹs navigational systems. Therefore it is linked to a NaviBox to get necessary information such as GPS, AIS, compass, and radar information. Our system is embedded in LABSKAUS, a test bed for the safety assessment of new e‐Navigation systems.
