Opis:
Bryozoa (23 species) from many boreholes in the Belarussian part of the Podlasie-Brest Depression and some adjacent areas of the East European Platform are described. Only bryozoa from the orders Cystoporida (suborder Ceramoporina) and Trepostomida (suborders Esthonioporina, Amplexoporina and Halloporina) are represented. Four species and one family are described as new. The genera Anolotichiina Pushkin, 1992 and Minutolunaria Pushkin, 1992 are redescribed. The species described occur in the Llanvirn (Azeri-Kukruse Regional stages) and Caradoc (Idavere-Oandu Regional stages). The results support the hypothesis that the study area represented an independent biogeographical region of the Baltic province, corresponding to the Brest-Volyn confacies during the Llanvirn and Caradoc.

Opis:
The primary goal of mammography screening is to decrease mortality in patients with breast cancer. The aim of the study was evaluation of the screening program results on course of implemented therapy and its results in breast carcinoma patients. Material and methods. Evidence includes data on the group of 1818 patients with breast cancer that were subject to surgical treatment at the Clinic of Breast Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery of the Oncology Center in Bydgoszcz (558 patients hospitalized from January 2006 to December 2006 and 1260 patients treated from January 2011 to June 2012). Analysis included type of diagnostic procedure implemented before surgical treatment, as well as grade of cancer progression, results of pathology tests done on specimens and type of surgical procedure. Additionally, the screening group (tumor diagnosed based on screening mammography) and symptomatic group (cancer diagnosed otherwise that within the screening program) were identified. Results. In 2006, in 28.4% of patients included in the study, primary tumor was discover in screening process (vs 61.5% in 2011-2012). In the first period, 35.7% of changes did not exceed 2 cm - cT1 (vs 48.3% in 2011-2012), while the percentage of cT4 was 9.9% (vs 4.7% in 2011-2012). In 2006, 30.8% of patients were treated in the grade I of clinical progression (vs 44.2% in 2011-2012), 53.4% in the grade II, 14% in grade III and 0.2% in grade IV (vs 45.7%, 9.7%, and 0.4%, respectively). In 45.5% (2006) and 39.9% (in 2011-2012) of patients, metastases were found in axillary lymph nodes. Differences were similar both in screening and symptomatic group. In 2006, in 12.4% of surgical patients breast conserving therapy (BCT) was implemented (vs 49.8% in 2011-2012). In the screening group, it was applied in 15.2% of patients (in 2006) and in 63% (in 2011- 2012), while in symptomatic group the percentages were 11.8% and 41%, respectively. Conclusions. In both periods of analysis, significant differences were observed as to implementation of breast cancer screening program, as well as to grade of clinical and pathological progression of the cancer. Observable increase of screening tests allowed for significantly more frequent implementation of breast conserving surgical procedures.

Brest Bible, protestant poetry, invention, funerary poetry
Opis:
The Brest Bible as an Inspiration for Protestant Poets. Biblical Phrases in the Religious Poetry of Evangelical Protestants in the 16th and 17th Centuries. A Preliminary SurveyThe aim of this paper is to examine the impact of the Brest Bible (its lexis and phraseology) on the religious poetry of the followers of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland and the Polish Reformed Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. The article is a preliminary study of the subject. The author analysed thematically consistent poems on death and divided them into three types: occasional poetry, represented by Cyprian Bazylik’s Short description of an affair at the death and funeral of the Enlightened Duchess Elżbieta of Szydłowiec Radziwiłłowa (Krótkie wypisanie sprawy przy śmierci i pogrzebie Oświeconej Księżny Paniej Halżbiety z Szydłowca Radziwiłowej, 1562); functional literature, illustrated with four songs from a Protestant hymnary by Krzysztof Kraiński (1609) and Andrzej Hünefeld (1646); and fine poetry, for which the author chose the The Quartan Fever Penance (Pokuta w kwartanie, written in 1652). For the Old-Polish Protestant authors of religious poetry, the Calvinist Bible is a constant reference point. It determines but by no means limits the horizons of imagination. Writing about deathly issues, the authors of occasional, high-art poetry or hymnary songs rarely borrow from the lexis of the Brest Bible and freely realize their artistic concepts. In their works there are only a few most expressive phrases and lexemes from the first Polish Protestant Bible. In the analyzed poems, Biblical phrases usually appear in the form of paraphrases, well-thought-out verses or Biblical scenes. The poets borrow words or Biblical phrases only when the described plot is scarcely known, usually drawn from a rarely referred to Old-Testament book. This gesture can be interpreted as a token of the poet’s circumspection.

Opis:
The following article is a comprehensive analysis of the physical layout of the Brest Bible in comparison with the typographical standard model dominant in the 16th century. The author of the article explores the idea that the new edition of The Bible, initiated by Mikołaj "Czarny" Radziwiłł, was valued during its time not only as a pioneering translation of the Holy Text but also as a labour-intensive editorial project. The article is an overview of the text format and page layout. The author focuses on the visual significance of the book, especially the ornamental materials used to create it. The paper shows how the Brest Bible stands out in comparison with other contemporary Protestant prints. The author focuses on the unusual layout of the chapters, which are both rich and complex in terms of the organization and the commentary, as well as the extensive publishing frame and ornate decor. The typographical model used in the creation of the Brest Bible amazes contemporary scholars with its eternal functionality and reveals the astonishing complexity of the design.

The Berestye Archaeological Museum, a branch of the Brest Museum of Regional Studies (Brest, Republic of Belarus‘), is the only museum in Europe where an archaeological site with perfectly preserved 13th-century wooden buildings of an East Slavic town are exhibited. The discovery of the medieval town of Berestye was the result of large-scale excavations carried out in 1969–1981 and in 1988 under the guidance of Professor Piotr Lysenko. The characteristics of the wet cultural layer made it possible to preserve more than 220 wooden buildings and more than 43,000 objects of organic and inorganic origin. The long-term process of preserving wooden constructions was the first experience in the conservation and museumisation of such objects in the field.

Opis:
The issue that is the main focus of this paper has not been of great interest to bibliology scholars. Even though one version of the Brest Bible, marked as B, was described quite thoroughly by Feliks Bentkowski already two hundred years ago, the catalogue descriptions have until today been based upon the scheme formulated by Karol Estreicher (senior). He identified three versions of the Brest Bible, which differ only in the title page. The fact is that there are only two versions, A and B, in existence, which differ in the first gathering (*) or (very rarely) in the first two gatherings (*, **). The gatherings of version B were established to have been printed in the 1580s or 1590s in Jan Karcan’s press in Vilnius. Apparently, a certain number of the Old Testament gatherings A–Y were typeset and printed in Brest in 1563. There is only one extant complete copy of it with the newly printed gatherings, whereas in the remaining dozen or so copies that have survived it is only one, or rarely, two gatherings, and sometimes only single leaves. The search for versions of the Bible also made it possible to compile a list of 135 copies of the Brest Bible stored today in public, monastic and church collections in Europe and North America.

The article presents the organization of religious ministration for patients in the 9th Regional Hospital in Brest. The Second Polish Republic was a country in which people of different religions lived: Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish and so on. That was the reason why priests of all religions visited the 9th Regional Hospital. It was a good example of religious tolerance also for modern hospitals. The article is based on documents from the Central Military Archives and other works. The author also used articles from the magazine “Lekarz Wojskowy” (“The Army Doctor”).

Opis:
Pafnucy Siehen, from Bielsk, was the founder of the Suprasl monastery. He was the one who had the biggest contribution to the creation of the first churches, financial security and determination of the status of the monastery in the Orthodox Church. The Siehen family incurred costs of raising the monastic congregation in Gródek. The Siehens, who co-founded the construction of the monastery, received numerous estates from King Sigismund the Old (Zygmunt Stary). Pafnucy Siehen created a well-organized religious community and supervised legal and material protection of his monastery. At the beginning of 1509 Hegumen Pafnucy Siehen made a request to the king for permission to build a stone Orthodox church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The construction of the church began in October 1510. According to the majority of historians, this year was the date of Pafnucy Siehen’s death. On the basis of new evidence, it has been proven that Pafnucy Siehen did not die that year; he participated in the council of Vilnius in 1509–1510. At this council Pafnucy Siehen, the hegumen of Supraśl, was declared a bishop. After bishop Wassian’s death in 1512, Pafnucy Siehen became the ordinary of Vladimir-Brest diocese. His nomination was supported by the Metropolitan of Kiev, Joseph and secular Orthodox elites. After choosing hegumen Pafnucy the Vladimir-Brest leader, the importance of the Siehen family rapidly increased. Bishop Siehen, as a bishop, initiated the restoration of numerous churches and monasteries destroyed during the Tatar invasion in 1491. In the years 1514–1516 Pafnucy received from the king the confirmation of privileges granted to the episcopate and the Cathedral of the Dormition in Vladimir-Volynski. Bishop Pafnucy managed the Lutsk-Ostroh diocese since 1523. He officially took over the Lutsk diocese after the death of bishop Cyril in 1526. Pafnucy Siehen held his episcopal function in Lutsk until 1528.

Artykuł prezentuje historię 9. Szpitala Okręgowego w Brześciu nad Bugiem. Stanowiąc część sławnej twierdzy Brześć, był jednym z najważniejszych wojskowych szpitali w Polsce w okresie międzywojennym. Większość lekarzy w nim pracujących została zamordowana przez NKWD w 1940 roku w Katyniu i Charkowie. Historia 9. Szpitala Okręgowego pokazuje wielką ewolucję tej placówki — od małego szpitala potowego do wielkiego szpitala okręgowego.
