Opis:
The article treats of the previously unknown correspondence of the writer, stored in the Library in Kórnik, Ossolineum or in the private collections. Letters are addressed to his wife, the clergy, the blind children from Laski, to writers from the country and abroad and they provide interesting pieces of information concerning life and work of the writer. Materials sent from Jerusalem at the request of the author of the article are a valuable complement to the whole. The texts confirm the great writer's fascination with religious themes, especially his love for the Bible, which is the „book of life”.
Artykuł dotyczy nieznanej dotąd korespondencji pisarza, zgromadzonej w Bibliotece w Kórniku, Ossolineum czy zbiorach prywatnych. Listy kierowane do żony, osób duchownych, niewidomych dzieci z Lasek, literatów z kraju i zza granicy dostarczają interesujących wiadomości dotyczących życia i twórczości pisarza. Materiały nadesłane z Jerozolimy na prośbę autorki artykułu stanowią cenne uzupełnienie całości. Teksty potwierdzają ogromną fascynację pisarza tematyką religijną, a zwłaszcza umiłowaniem Biblii, która jest „księgą życia”.

Opis:
Roman Brandstaetter (1906-1987) was one of the most prolific Polish contemporary playwrights. In the 1950s he wrote eight dramas. Although their subjects are allusions to the past, they were also quite current. Against the background of the socialist realist plays that were reigning supreme on Polish stages at that time, the writer defined his dramatic works as “the theatre of subtexts and oblique statements”. For Brandstaetter, history was not an illustration of propaganda slogans, but a background for discussing contemporary times and the presentation of the highest ethical values, as well as criticism of what had originated from the spirit of injustice and cosmopolitism. In the works written by the author of Wojna żaków z panami ‘The War of Schoolboys against the Lords’ both patriotic and moral tones can be heard; they also remind the reader of Renaissance Poland, the Poland of a great culture. There is a call for Polish theatre and for respect for native speech, as well as for the ideas of freedom and justice that have always been so dear to the Poles. The symbolism referring to the past is, therefore, an expression of opposition to the political oppression and ubiquitous symbolic violence of the Stalinist period. In Brandstaetter’s works, by alluding to the history of Poland and the lives of great Poles, traits such as sacrifice, struggle and transformation were especially emphasised, as was the spiritual strength of being a Pole, which was derived from Christianity.

Opis:
The article discusses the subject of conversion as a subject of poetry on the example of the work of Roman Brandstaetter. It focused on the post-war creativity of the author, who in 1946 officially abandoned Judaism, received baptism and became a Catholic. Focused on two aspects of conversion. First of all, these were the circumstances of life: the need to leave the country, problems related to the Polish-Jewish identity, death of parents, parting with the first wife. Secondly, these were issues related to the biblical experience of God, because reading the Bible had a great significance for the poet since the time of Polish studies. Confirmations of the issue are confirmed by quotes from works that are testimonies of changes taking place in the author’s life, making up a rich picture of his spiritual transformation.

Opis:
Powrót syna marnotrawnego [The Return of the Prodigal Son] focuses on three different stories: the biblical story of the lost son, an event that took place in Rembrandt van Rijn, a painter from Leida, and the transformation that had undergone in Roman Brandstaetter, the author of the drama. Although the author himself constructs in his work the life of the Flemish author, on the basis of his own experiences, the drama is not only a story about concrete people. Rather, it is the experiences of particular people trying to find an answer to the question about the sense of faith and the essence of life. The key role in this text is the quest after light, both by the artist who by means of new plastic techniques seeks to comprehend reality, and the playwright who is constantly seeking his own place in the world. On the one hand light plays an essential role in the painter's work, but on the other it is a symbol of God who should be sought and found in various experiences of our life. It is important here to compare Rembrandt's and Brandstaetter's lives to the events from the Gospel of St Luke. In the way the drama is constructed, the analysis of its concrete parts, and reflection on the time described in the text the reader is brought closer to the understanding of suffering and painful transformations. They are all necessary on the way to approach nearer the source of light itself, that is God.

Opis:
In Roman Brandstaetter's drama The Day of Wrath motifs may be found that are taken from the Books of the Prophets and the Wisdom Books of the Old Testament. They allow looking at the title day of wrath as the time, in which God's action is manifested. Like in the message by the prophet Zephaniah, in the drama destruction and salvation may be a revelation of God as the Lord of history and the Savior. Recollecting the words of prophets, psalms, the Gospel and the Apocalypse in the drama allows looking at the 20th century events as a subsequent realization of God's promises. The events in the drama are a kind of repetition and continuation of biblical scenes. Passion and salvation given by God during the banishment become present. God's action is confronted with the man's faith that has been weakened. The protagonists of the drama experience “the time of wrath, the time of mercy”, in which their conversion may at last happen. Owing to the words of the Holy Scriptures intertwined in the text of the drama the image of God's awesomeness and of the surrounding evil do not become a source of despair for the protagonists, but allow them to accept God's incomprehensible will.

Opis:
The article presents a translation experiment done by Roman Brandstaetter while translating the prologue initiating the Gospel of John. Not only did the translator change the traditional form of naming the prologue About the Word or The Eternal Word and propose a lofty genre one – Hymn to the Word – but also altered past tense form “was” for present “is” which constituted the core of his experiment. That alteration revealed and established the understanding of eternal time by the Israelis in the times of John the Evangelist. Following the innovative path of Brandstaetter the author of the article suggested another transformation – exchange of “Word” for “Ghost” – in order to create a new experimental adaptation of that work as well as to emphasize the timelessness of Hymn to the Word.
