Opis:
Arrigo Boito’s (1842–1918) relationship with poland has been studied extensively since 1963, when Walerian preisner published a monographic study of Boito and his connections to poland. In subsequent years, additional publications focusing on this artist with polish roots have appeared. The article on polish motifs in Boito’s critical and literary work summarizes the influence of polish literature, particularly the works of Adam Mickiewicz, on the Italian’s oeuvre. This article not only builds on the research of previous scholars but also offers new insights and observations.

Opis:
The paper discusses some translation problems in the Polish version of four fantasy short stories by Italian writer and composer Arrigo Boito: ‘Iberia’ (1868), ‘L’alfier nero’ (1868), ‘Il pugno chiuso’ (1870), and ‘Il trapezio’ (1873–1874). The book with their translations by Aleksandra Cypko and Klaudia Sarafin was published by the Cracow-based publishing house Austeria in 2021. The challenges faced in translation work were manifold, starting with the reproduction of Boito’s stylistic and poetic peculiarities in contemporary Polish. In this paper, I first survey the salient features of Boito’s literary Italian and style to focus subsequently on the Polish translators’ solutions for rendering loanwords and technical words and to examine the functions of the notes and the paratextual apparatus of the translations. In the final part of the paper, I address the issue of translating the antinomies underlying Boito’s writing. In this sense, his four short stories represent an ideal expression of the dualistic conception of Scapigliatura, an important artistic movement in which the young Boito was involved. To find metaphors and similes through which to adequately reproduce this dominant feature of Boito’s writing was one of the most difficult challenges for the Polish translators.

Opis:
The author’s analysis of Arrigo Boito’s contacts with Poland and Polish culture has produced two categories of findings: one biographical, which can be reconstructed through the study of his correspondence, and the other one relating to literature and music. The first section of the present paper is devoted to the state of research on Polish inspirations in this Italian writer and composer’s works. The focus of the second section, dedicated to the analysis of Polish references in the artist’s published and unpublished letters, is the organizational role played by Arrigo Boito in the 1895 delivery of an urn containing Tadeusz Kosciuszko’s heart to the Polish museum of Rapperswil.

Opis:
Basing on example of a small de Fontaines church at Neuchâtel, Switzerland the author deals With an essential problem of adaptative restoration works being undertaken in architectural objects of historical character. Though the building in question, when considered from the viewpoint of history of art, cannot be classified as one belonging to the top category the restoration works carried out gave rise to a great deal of interesting discussion. The problems involved in restoration of th a t church were presented in the summer of 1971 at the International Centre for the Study of Preservation and the Restoration of Cultural Property, Rome, th a t has been established under the auspices of UNESCO, as a specific fea ture in certain modern tendencies present in the conservator’s work. During th e course of restoration in 1969 from the church interior were removed its neo-Gothic fittings made of wood, except for pulpit, whose place took a number of wood furnishings extremely simple in their shapes. In this strive to achieve an intended simplicity and the most functional character of the church’s interior the conservators have, however, advanced too far, as the new fittings are quite drastically modern as to their forms and worse still in sharp contrast to architecture. In this connection the fact th a t from among elements of the former fittings the pulpit has been left as the only element seems to be a misunderstanding or even failure. The author emphasizes th a t it is not the change of fittings alone with which he is dealing in his article but the so-called spirit of the monument meant as the character and climate of authenticity. The excessively modernized interior of de Fontaines church has become one sterile and deprived of colour thus loosing its intrinsic climate and character.
