Opis:
Studies on men’s body image are becoming increasingly popular. They show that body dissatisfaction may lead to certain health disorders (depressive mood, bigorexia, anxiety). This study focuses on the differences in body dissatisfaction among young men who work out to reach different aims (to increase, strengthen or to shape muscle mass). Body dissatisfaction was measured using the Bodybuilder Image Grid Scale. The results of this study show that there are no significant differences between men who exercise in gyms using different types of work-out. However, there is a significant difference between men who exercise to gain muscle mass and those who do not work out at all; the first group is less satisfied with their bodies as far as fat mass is concerned. Moreover, the evaluation of health and body attractiveness was measured using the questionnaire ‘Your values’ and asking men about the hypothetical possibility of giving up their longevity for a perfect body. The results indicate that men who exercise tend to treat health more instrumentally than those who do not train. Finally, those who train regularly find attractiveness of the body much more important than those who do not exercise at all.

The social scientists focus on the negative stereotypes of the people with the excess of weight and the problems of the quality of life. Especially in the United States and Europe the stereotype of the obese person as an unattractive, lazy and less intelligent one is very common. That is why the obese people have to endure discrimination process in many fields of social life. The obese explain their problems through their own image. Today, the problem with the excess of weight touch children and the youth more and more frequently. The peers play important role in the process of creation of the children and youth body image. They can influence positive perception, yet they can make the children and youth attach negative habits to their own body perception, too. This research reveal some differences in the perception of social support and criticism from of the peers’ image by the youth with differentiated BMI index.

Today's media have an important impact on young peoples’ social life - transforming many social and developmental aspects. Online activity of young adults not only increases the availability to positive and educational experiences, but also arises the exposure to online threats. The main scope of this article is exploring the role of appearance and social practices concerning its creation in the process of peer cyberbullying among Polish young adults (N=329). Online body autopresentation has been found an important factor moderating the process of online aggression. The dissemination of beliefs was also examined – assessment of own attractiveness, the apprehension of the appearance assessment by others and the scale of activities focused on editing and improving the appearance depicted in the pictures posted on social websites. The differences in these areas were examined between people with disabilities or those who have injuries or specific health conditions that affect their appearance and other young people. The results have revealed that particular research and intervention focus should be put on young people having a condition or injury affecting appearance and/or having a disability or serious health problems as this group has been found more prone to be victimized (regarding traditional bullying as well as cyberbullying).

Opis:
Introduction: Pregnancy is the time of the most dynamic and visible changes in a woman's body. Some researchers have shown that woman's ability to adapt to changes in her body may affect the attitude towards her baby. Purpose: To study the relation between body image in pregnant women and the attachment to the unborn child. Materials and methods: 100 women in II trimester completed Maternal Fetal Attachment Scale (MFAS) and Body Image Questionnaire. Results: The analysis showed a significant relation between the attitudes towards the own body during pregnancy and the quality of the mother-child attachment. According to the research, the mothers who were strongly attached to the child were concurrently dissatisfied with bodily changes. Socio demographic variables (age, education, marital status, place of living), pregnancy-related variables (pregnancy planning, familiarity with child's gender, the level of preparation to maternity) and the variables related to the woman's body (BMI before pregnancy, severity of pregnancy complaints) had no impact on maternal-fetal attachment. Also, the attitude towards the own body was formed regardless of socio demographic variables and pregnancy-related variables. Significant relations between the attitudes towards own body and the variables associated with woman's body (BMI, pregnancy complaints) were observed. Conclusions: Woman's attitude towards the body and changes during pregnancy is a complex issue. According to the results of this study, it is possible to develop a positive bond with the child despite experiencing dissatisfaction with own body.

The aim of this paper is to present how those individuals whose body has been changed due to disease process (anorexia or oncological pathologies) experience their bodyliness. Authors’ own qualitative research among 10 women with anorexia and 10 who undergone mastectomy is going to be shown. Also potential mechanisms which can cause disordered body image and the phenomenon of self-stigma and self-exclusion in these groups will be consider. In the lights of obtained results, sample women feel embarrassed because of the “imperfect” body they have. The aspect of stigma which women after mastectomy internalized the most is the esthetic value, whereas those with anorexia have much difficulties in interpersonal relationships which leads to self-isolation.

Changes in body perception and evaluation among women from adolescence to adulthoodThe inspiration for the discussion presented in the article were differences in body self-perception in women from adolescence to adulthood. The results of research conducted among a group of 476 women at the age between 13 and 50 revealed regularities and tendencies for developmental changes in female body perception. There were distinguished three age groups connected with the appearance of signifi cant changes in body perception ensuing from various social roles and developmental tasks that the fair sex representatives need to face during subsequent life stages. The first stage was observed in participants aged around 18, which sets the transition between adolescence and adulthood and at the same time begins the period with the most experienced satisfaction with one’s own appearance. Entering the next stage of body perception development at the age of 25, there appears the so-called middle life crisis which is another turning point not only in the area of gathering experiences, reflections, and competencies of the gentle sex, but also in area of own body perception and evaluation.

Opis:
The impact of obesity on health, social care and the economy has long been established. Being obese or overweight increases the risk of developing a range of serious diseases including psychological disturbance, diabetes, heart disease, musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis and cancers that lead to premature disability and mortality. The good news is that overweight and obesity are largely prevent and /or control-able through losing weight strategies and fitting room can be an option for whom are observant about their surroundings. The fitting room is usually where the consumer makes their final evaluation about the products while assessing personal appearance, and finally deciding whether or not to purchase the garment. For some people, fitting room it is something to get through without visible or psychic damage and for some others is a horrifying place as they may suddenly realize how overweight or obese they are that could be a challenging start to maintain a healthy body image in a life-changing journey. In fact, the changing room is inspired to provide some people with personal choices toward a desirable weight therapy through engaging in exercise and diet. Hence, fitting room while in shopping even for entertainment purposes is advised as a beneficial life - time decision in weight control and obesity may take place by individual in this way.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the associations between comfort in the physical proximity of others and interpersonal trauma and body ego. Comfort in the physical proximity of others was measured using a self-report method, as well as by means of a procedure where the experimenter initiated interpersonal touch. The results show that comfort in the physical proximity of others (based on self-report) was associated with four types of trauma (emotional, physical or sexual abuse and emotional neglect) as well as with all aspects of dysfunctional body ego (e.g. disrupted perception, problems with interpreting and regulating physical states). Defying expectations, the types of trauma studied did not differentiate individuals experiencing comfort from those experiencing discomfort, in an experimental setting of being touched. As predicted, both groups differed in all aspects of body ego. Moreover body ego proved to be a mediator between trauma and comfort in the physical proximity of others (self-report measure).

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki analizy dwóch wybranych roczników czasopisma „Super Linia”: z 1995 i 2015 roku.
The article presents the results of the contents analysis of a magazine addressed to people potentially interested in reduction of their body weight. The subject of the analysis were two annual editions of “Super Linia” magazine, issued in 1995 and 2015. The methods of quantitative and qualitative content analyses were used. The main focus of the analyses were the kinds of issues raised in the two chosen annual editions as well as the meanings assigned to obesity in three chosen contexts: social, aesthetic and medical. The comparison of the two annual editions has shown, that the range of issues raised in the magazine has not changed significantly in 2015 in comparison to 1995. The meanings assigned to obesity have changed to the greatest extent when presenting obesity in the social context.

Opis:
In the conditions of late modernity, the body is a project realized in both the public and private spheres. The aim of this article is to review theories and empirical studies concerning socio-cultural issues and the subjective determinants of perceptions of physicality. The body has become the main instrument of experiencing the world and oneself, a significant area, a key element of an individual’s identification strategy. The modern human speaks with and through the body, the person’s identity is reduced to self-presentation, by projecting their physicality, they project themselves. The presentation and reception of body is dominated by an aesthetic perspective, organically bound with the tendency to aestheticize daily life in general. The text is based on empirical data, analysis of 403 qualitative interviews conducted between 2012-2014 in Polish cities: Warsaw, Kielce, Chelmno, and Przemysl. The research shows that the emotional aspect of experiencing body, as well as the cognitive aspect within consciousness, the mental image of one’s own body, differ according to the respondents’ age and gender.

The concept of body image can be considered on many levels, but constant is the fact that it is a mental image: of the size, shape, and form of one’s own body, influencing one’s overall self-image. Previous multifaceted research shows that perceptions of body image can be influenced among other things by physical activity or personality. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between body image perception and personality, considering individuals who regularly practice physical activity (N= 104). The following research tools were used: IPIP-BFM-20, Body Esteem Scale and a questionnaire consisting of questions allowing for the respondents’ characterization. Analysis of the collected data revealed that almost half of the respondents are currently dissatisfied with their body image. It was also noted that those who were satisfied with their body image scored statistically significantly higher on two of the five personality traits measured: Extraversion and Emotional Stability. The results obtained showing the relationship between personality and body image perception are consistent with previous studies in which the type of physical activity and its frequency were not examined.

Psychological distress associated with body image disorders in patients with breast cancer is well described in the literature. Given the known insults to body image caused by both disease and oncological treatment, body image distress is commonplace within this patient population. Stress is also a frequent sequela of a diagnosis of and treatment for cancer and may manifest various forms. This study undertook to investigate the nature of stress and body image distress within a cohort of 80 female breast cancer patients drawn from three outpatient cancer treatment facilities in the Durban, South Africa region and to examine its correlation with psychological and behavioural indices reported by these patients as compared to a group of 80 female patients undergoing treatment for other types of cancer. The results indicated that although there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of depressive symptomatology and measures of self-esteem, where scores largely fell within normal ranges, the breast cancer patients experienced higher levels of body image dissatisfaction as compared to the other group and that stress tended to be expressed in psychological and behavioural indices as opposed to physiological expression.

The purpose was to determine symptoms of anorexia readiness syndrome and examine the relationship between our groups of variables in young women (without eating disorders). Method: 24 women with anorexia readiness syndrome and 55 healthy female students were participated in the present study. We used the Contour Drawing Rating Scale, the Body Dissatisfaction Scale, the Eating Attitudes Test and the Sociocultural Attitudes Appearance Questionnaire. Results: Within female anorexia readiness syndrome, the strongest correlation was observed between actual–ideal self-discrepancy and actual–ought discrepancy (r=0,970; p<0,001) as well as between actual self and ought self (r=0,909; p<0,001). A high degree of correlation between actual self and actual–ideal self-discrepancy (r=0,821; p<0,001) and between actual self and actual–ought discrepancy (r=0,832; p<0,001) was also noticed. Body dissatisfaction, internalisation of the thinness ideal, diet, social pressure to be thin, oral control and actual-ought discrepancy predict anorexia readiness syndrome in women without eating disorders. Conclusion: Anorexia readiness syndrome is strongly related to body-oriented response and self-discrepancies.

The aim of the study was to establish whether any relation exists between depression symptoms and the extent to which adolescents accept the changes their bodies undergo (the physical changes they experience at different stages of growing up), and if the connection does exist – is it gender-related. Method: Data were collected from four sub-groups: younger girls (aged 12–13), older girls (aged 17–18), younger boys (aged 12–13), and older boys (aged 17–18). The participants were asked to complete questionnaires that allow to measure the subjective intensity of depression symptoms (BDI), the current stage of biological changes (the Tanner scale) and whether these changes are accepted by the individual who experiences them (the original Feelings Towards the Body questionnaire). Results: The less adolescents accept the changes in their bodies, the higher depression symptoms they demonstrate. For younger girls, older girls and older boys, no links were established between levels of accepting bodily changes and early/late maturation (in comparison with the population of their peers). For younger boys, the later the stage of their development, the less likely they are to accept the changes in their bodies. Girls report more intense depression symptoms than boys do, but their levels of accepting changes that occur around puberty are significantly lower only when compared to those of older boys. Conclusions: Whether biological changes during puberty (mainly feelings of anxiety and shame related to the body) are accepted or not, was proven to be a significant predictor of more intense depression symptoms.
