Cultural bioethics is a response to the dominance of the Western approach in bioethics and medical ethics, whereby Western bioethics is identified mainly with principalism and less often with utilitarianism. Moreover, Western bioethics is perceived as a part of the postcolonial Western supremacy. As a result of this cultural turn, Confucian, Japanese, Latin and African bioethics emerged. The article is a comparative review of the main concepts, issues and branches of African bioethics. It focuses on Bantu and Igbo bioethics. Despite the differences between the authors, a common element shared by most representatives of African bioethics is criticism of individualism and of other Western cultural patterns that are incompatible with African medical challenges and cultural practices.

Artykuł podejmuje problem zasadności podziału na bioetykę katolicką i bioetykę laicką, opisując ich wzajemne zależności, różnice i charakter sporu w różniących ich kwestiach. Spory bioetyczne są jedną z wielu kategorii sporów, które wpisują się w życie pluralistycznych społeczeństw. Na tle jednak innych debat spory bioetyczne angażują bardzo mocno uczestników debaty, rozgrzewają emocje. W artykule przeprowadzona jest analiza metodologiczna, która pozwala usytuować bioetykę jako odrębną dyscyplinę naukową, charakteryzującą się interdyscyplinarnością, posiadającą własną metodę badawczą. W świetle poczynionych analiz metodologicznych podejmuje się temat zasadności podziału na bioetykę katolicką i bioetykę laicką, wskazując na kryteria takiego podziału. Świadomość różnic, jakie występują w obszarze bioetyki motywuje do astanowienia się, jaki kształt powinna przybrać debata w kwestiach bioetycznych? Czy jest możliwy dialog, spór, czy może jesteśmy skazani na konfrontację? W których obszarach powinno prowadzić się dialog, spierać się na argumenty? Czy jest możliwy kompromis w kwestiach moralnych?
The article raises the issue of relevance of the division into catholic and secular bioethics, describing their respective relationships, differences and the nature of dispute where two approaches differ. Bioethical disputes are one of many categories of disputes that have become part of life of pluralist societies. Compared with other debates, bioethical disputes heavily involve their participants, stirring up emotions. The methodological analysis carried out in the article helps to place bioethics as a separate scientific discipline, characterized by interdisciplinarity and having its own research method. With regard to methodological analyses carried out, the issue of relevance of the division into catholic and secular bioethics is raised, specifying the criteria for such distinction. Awareness of differences existing in the field of bioethics brings the question of the appropriate form of disputes in bioethical issues. Is it possible to have a dialogue or a dispute, or are we doomed to confrontation? In which areas should we try to engage in a dialogue, exchange arguments? Can a compromise be reached on moral issues?

W latach 90. XX wieku J. L. A. Garcia wystąpił z propozycją specyficznej afroamerykańskiej perspektywy w bioetyce. Tekst opisuje specyfikę tegoż podejścia w bioetyce, w szczególności zaś koncentruje się na wykorzystywanym w nim pojęciu rasy, w kontekście przemian pojmowania tej idei w wieku XX. Bioetyka afroamerykańska przewartościowuje samo pojęcie rasy, jednak nie opowiada się za „rasową ślepotą” (ang. color blindness), która paradoksalnie nie sprzyja procesom emancypacji.
In the 90s, J. L. A. Garcia came up with a specific proposal for the African American perspective on bioethics. The text describes the specificity of that approach in bioethics; in particular, it focuses on the concept of race used by Garcia in the context of historical changes of this idea in the 20th century. African American bioethics revaluates the notion of race, but do not totally rejects it. On the contrary, African American bioethics does not favor of “color blindness”, which is not conducive to the emancipation (eg. in the context of medicine).

Recently, in our Slovakian companies, a lively debate on the protection of human life and the need to seek a proper relation to the handling of human embryos.Many media controversy dealt with the issue, since the man in their embryonicdevelopment deserve protection, and since (if at all) we can talk about some earlyhuman life. Many times we can not find a satisfactory answer that would satisfyboth opinions, but in practice we should be looking to ensure that all biomedicalpractices that are currently in use were in accordance with the ethics and (moral)natural law. But today, despite the belief that each person's life should be protected under that law, which protects the life and honor, and also echo the view that in certainspecial cases that can break the law. Eg. induced abortion, artificial insemination,cloning, euthanasia, and the like. If one were to judge when a human life worth more or less, as their time Peter Singer has argued, we would admit that life itselfand therefore man is not always the same price. The consequence would be that a person can be deprived of life at any time, without us ever broke the law. It is therefore necessary to think more deeply about it and stressed that human life is always the same value from the beginning until its end. And therefore, certainly notonly such, as it has for decades advocated druhizmu Singer theory.

Refleksja bioetyczna stara się zrozumieć naturę biomedycznych praktyk oraz dokonać ich oceny etycznej. Ostatecznym celem tej refleksji jest dobro człowieka i społeczności ludzkiej. W analizach aksjologicznych można się spotkać z różnymi założeniami filozoficznymi i modelami ocen bioetycznych. W bioetyce dążącej do uwolnienia się od niezmiennych zasad najczęściej można się spotkać z pragmatyczno-utylitarystyczną kazuistyką lub z modelem kontraktualistycznym, a w kręgu znaczonym wpływami T. L. Beauchampa i J. F. Childressa z bioetyką czterech zasad (autonomii, nieszkodzenia, dobroczynności i sprawiedliwości). Bioetyka inspiracji katolickiej odwołuje się do historycznie zweryfikowanych wartości uniwersalnych, dla którym filarem jest świętość życia ludzkiego i godność osobowa każdego człowieka. Konsekwentnie niniejsze opracowanie omawia mądrościowe inspiracje refleksji nad praktykami medycznymi oraz kontekst filozoficzny, etyczny i teologiczny refleksji bioetycznej eklezjalnej.
The bioethical reflection is an attempt to understand the very nature of biomedical practice in order to achieve the fair ethical judgement. The ultimate aim of that reflection is the goodness of a person and the human society. In the axiological analyses one can come across various philosophical assumptions and bioethical models. In bioethics thriving towards releasing itself from invariable principles often we could see the pragmatic, utilitarian, casuistic approach while with the contractualistic model and among the circle of influence of T. L. Beauchamp and J. F. Childress we see the bioethics of four principles: autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice.

Every cultural era is specified by diverse questions and various problems which it ́s destined to face and cope with. In last decades there are beginig to appear questions which portray the developement of scientific disciplines, concerning life and man himself. In 20-th century we have witnessed several revolutions. Besides the revolution in electronics and computer technique, the terapeutical and biological revolution has particularly influenced our lives. The discoveries of biology came before we could prepare our minds for it. We are necessariled to reflect a new arosed problems, revalued and interest in a new opportunities. It must to be opened philosophic – ethical dialogue because on the one side the medicine and biology and another relationship labour are fascinating with their discouveries, but on the second side they draw dilem and fear about their impact onthe future of the human race. Whether bioetics can handle moral problems, which was brought to us biology time will tell.

Human dreams of a long and healthy life are becoming increasingly real. The advancement of medical technology allows to modify the genome or personalised therapy in order to avoid troublesome side effects. This process also leads to the blurring of boundaries between humans and animals. Rats with induced human diseases are used for testing drugs for incurable illness; humanised pigs can donate organs that are compatible with the genome and immune system of the recipient. A brave new human is approaching, and new “human” animals are making this possible. The main objective of the article is to show the differences between the refinement of people and other animals and to analyse this phenomenon from an ethical point of view.

The article looks at attempts to use the legal and moral concepts of Zygmunt Ziembiński in bioethical considerations. Assuming that law is determined by morality, the an example of an unborn child is used to examine how these combined factors can be applied in bioethics. According to the author, the most interesting aspects are the proposals formulated by Ziembiński. In his opinion, the liberal theory of Ziembiński’s law, which expands on the views of Maria Ossowska and Czeslaw Znamierowski, deserves special attention. In summing up, the author comes to the conclusion that the concept of Ziembiński’s law can find universal application in bioethics, thanks to its more than subjective practical applicability.

Eugenics is a science that aims to promote and develop the innate qualities of the human species using the laws of genetic inheritance, making artificial selections of physical and mental traits, maintaining positive traits or removing those considered negative. In this paper we will illustrate the history of eugenics by touching on several points, from Plato’s early ideas to Galton’s founding of modern eu- genics, to the ideas of American proogressivism at the beginning of the 20th century, to the euge- nic programme implemented by Nazi Germany (AktionT4) during the Second World War, up to the present day with the development of genetic engineering technologies. The new eugenics, although based on science, continues to pursue the same goal as the old eugenics, the development of a superior individual and the elimination of those considered inferior.
