Opis:
Isidore of Seville (560-636) is rightly considered to be one of the most important teachers of the medieval Europe. He wrote numerous didactic works on catholic doctrine, biblical exegesis, history, grammar, natural sciences etc. Isidore was neither a scientist nor an independent thinker, but indeed he was a genius of compilation. He spent his youth in the famous library of the bishops of Seville, where he stored knowledge by studying Holy Scriptures and works of classic and Christian authors. This library was destroyed, but we could strive to recreate its catalogue reading the books written by Isidore. In his Versus in bibliotheca Isidore tells us about authors he knew. We find among them Christian poets – Prudentius, Iuvencus, Sedulius, Avitus Viennensis. In Etymologiae Isidore presents to the reader Dracontius, and in De viris illustribus he admires talents of the centonist Proba. Isidore’s knowledge of Christian epics and the high regard he had for them tell us a lot not only about literary tastes of the well-educated bishop, but about the culture of reading of inhabitants of Visigothic Spain in the seventh century as well.

Opis:
The topic of the paper is Gnostic, and therefore total, experience of the world as a bad place in the context of the postulate (resulting from the postmodern critical attitude) to replace the total programs of the world’s transformation with partial transformations. A novel by Veselin Stoyanov (1957−2014) constitutes the subject matter of the analyses. The interpretative perspective is given by the utopian/ dystopian discourse, especially by the category of ‘dystopia’ as interpreted by M. Keith Booker. The reflection is focused on the consequences of the author’s attempt at reinterpreting and even unmasking a total thought, as well as on the diagnosis of world’s corruption in relation to the social criticism. Therefore, a crucial meaning is given to the question of the writer’s involvement, and finally − to the status of evil in literature. The paper raises the question of the functioning of the dystopia in the conditions of postmodernity.

Opis:
The article analyzes Wincenty Pol’s penitential psalms. The paraphrases have been considered in the context of stylistic features of the Psalter biblical style. In result of the analysis it has been concluded that W. Pol, the Bible’s translator, accurately renders systemic features of the Psalter style (syntactic and lexical-idiomatic). It is still characterized by “traditionalism and absolute lack of innovation” mentioned by the critics (Łoboz 2004: 7). Nevertheless, with regard to religious texts, this objection may be perceived as peculiar praise.

Opis:
The article is devoted to characteristics of the method of paraphrasing biblical text found in the anonymous Historia o Heliaszu proroku from the Third Book of Kings (1572). I discuss the composition of the text, its elements of cultural adaptation and to what extent the religious romance is faithful to the canonical pattern. The comparison of paraphrases with the relevant passages of the Bible makes it clear that the poet was focused on an interesting story with fast-changing action. Therefore, he shortened or skipped those Bible episodes loosely related to the history of Elijah, as well as descriptive and information-reporting fragments. He made cultural adaptations, but he was inconsistent in these. The author worked hard to maintain a similarity with The Scriptures. He expanded the meaning of the Bible verse by inserting various functions (prosodic, commenting, explaining, characterizing, evaluating), without fundamentally changing the meaning of the original text. He did not allude to his contemporary times, events nor characters. He did not interpret the Old Testament in a New Testament context. He did not add prayers and did not supplement the text with marginal remarks. The poetic beauty of the paraphrases was of secondary value; the didactic and moralizing tone of the work was the most important for the author.

Opis:
The author discussed the matter of metre of the Psalm Paraphrase of Caspar Cunradus (1571-1633) from Vratislavia, who belongs to the most popular and highly regarded exponents of Silesian humanist at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Cunradus’ Psalter is a good example of the metrical variety of poetry, which is characterized by using many different metrical measures in the one work. Cunradus used in his Psalter 48 kinds of verses composed in 149 various metrically strophes. His metrical fancies we direct at variety of iambic metres, most frequent are: iambic dimeter catalectic, acatalectic and hipercatalectic. Iambic trimeter also is used by him very often, in a version catalectic, acatalectic and even hipercatalectic. From trochaic measures very frequent are trochaic dimeter catalectic and acatalectic, rare is trochaic trimeter catalectic. From dactylic measures he chooses eagerly Adonian verse, dactylic tripody catalectic (hemiepes) and acatalectic, dimeter catalectic and acatalectic, pentapody (or Greek pantameter), hexameter, rarely elegiac pentameter. Very popular are also Aeolic measures like Sapphic, Alcaic and Phalaecean hendecasyllable. The most often used are pure choriambs, especially glyconic, pherecratean, minor and greater Asclepiad verse. Cunradus also applies mixed dactylic and trochaic metres, named logaedic metres, for example an Aristophan metre, dactylic logaedic pentameter and heptameter, named Archilochian verse and greater Archilochian verse, rarely uses anapests and measures from a minore ionics and galliambic hexameter. Even bigger variety was created thanks to huge number and kinds of metrical orders, which were created from connecting different kinds of mentioned verses and composing them into strophes. He divided strophes according to number of lines in the stanza: two-line strophes (or distichs), three-line strophes (tristichs), four-line strophes (tetrastichs), five-line strophes (pentastichs) and six-line strophes (sexastichs). Each of them come under further distinction according to number of used measures in the strophe: the strophe consisted of one kind of metre (monocolos), the strophe consisted of two kind of metre (dicolos), the strophe consisted of three kind of metre (tricolos), the strophe consisted of four kind of metre (tetracolos). Silesian poet created in this way many new metrical combinations. Only several times on a hundred and fifty Psalms he repeated the same metrical system. Undoubtedly the size of this literary enterprise and his scale must be admired. His Psalm Paraphrase was geared towards a display of erudite skills and a great knowledge of a Latin metrics and a prosody.
