Opis:
The forest complex area of the Bialowieza Forest is a great monument of history and culture, and also a place of many important historical events. The motive of arrival to the Bialowieza Forest is mainly the attractiveness of the area, geographic location, international events and historical conditions. The purpose of the study is to analyze and evaluate tourist traffic in the area of Białowieża Forest on the basis of surveys conducted in the month of June 2016. Frequently opinions are expressed that tourists come to Białowieża for a longer holiday or they are engaged exclusively in a kind of scientific research. Therefore the author decided to investigate such a supposition, trying to find out, by survey research, from which places and towns and for how long tourists come, as well as what is their main purpose of arrival. The author of the study has conducted a study using the questionnaire technique among the owners of accommodation facilities and eating places, as well as visitors to the municipality Białowieża and the Forest. Studies have shown that there is currently no unified vision of creating attractions for the Bialowieza Forest, and above all systemic solutions at the level of commune and the region.

Opis:
The Białowieża Primeval Forest is a compact forest complex in Poland and Belarus, which divides the border of these countries. The last fragments of primeval forests in the European Lowlands have been preserved; the general area is about 145 thousand hectares. The Belarusian part is entirely a national park, while the Polish part has a different status. The Białowieża National Park covers about 10 thousand hectares. The remaining area is divided between three forest districts of the State Forests: Białowieża, Browsk, and Hajnówka. The richness of the fauna and flora of the Forest is a jewel in the crown of the nature of Poland. Its areas have been under protection at least from the beginning of the 15th century. The Białowieża National Park, which was created, was entered on the World Heritage List in 1979, while in 1992, this area was extended to the Belarusian part of the Forest. The protection and management of the Forest require close and practical cooperation not only between Poland and Belarus but also between institutions managing the area. The article presents the history of the eastern border formation after the end of World War II and the impact of these changes on the division of the Białowieża Forest. The Authors also discuss the forms of forest protection in Poland and Belarus, who administers the areas, and what problems occur on both sides of the Forest.

In the territory of NP the Białowieża Forest no special research on specific structure of lichens of the Cetrelia has been carried out, and there are only single instructions in publications (Golubkov 1986, 1987 and others) whose definitions are based on morphological characteristics and results of colour chemical reactions which are not always reliable. Three taxa of Cetrelia (C. cetrarioides, C. monachorum, C. olivetorum) have been identified in a study of the genus in Belarussian part of the Białowieża Forest. Cetrelia monachorum is the commonest member of the genus in the Białowieża Forest (46 records), whereas C. olivetorum is known from 35 localities. Cetrelia cetrarioides appears to be the rarest species of the genus in the Białowieża Forest (2 records). The distribution and status of three species in the Białowieża Forest are reviewed, distribution maps are provided, and the merits of the segregates for conservation measures are discussed.

The author of the article considers such concepts as the site of illumination, timber (also in its molecular sense), landmark, symbol, locator – cosmic tree, autonomous tree, storage medium, necrobiont – biocentric tree, forest as a holobiont – family (multispecies family), biotic foundation and condition of life. The article also demonstrates Książek’s evolving interest from environmental humanities and nature writing towards the literary politics of nature.

Opis:
The paper concerns the structure of natural regeneration in ash−alder riparian forests (Fraxino−Alnetum) colonized by beavers (Castor fiber) taking into account the substrate, on which it appears (soil and deadwood). Study was conducted in 2016 on twelve sampling plots located in the Orłówka valley in the Białowieża National Park (eastern Poland), where beavers settled around 2005. We counted natural regeneration occurring on the ground and on deadwood on each plot. Also we identified volume of deadwood, decay status and water cover. A decade after the occurrence of beaver ponds, the density of natural regeneration is 5575 saplings per hectare and the regeneration on deadwood is 28% of the total. Black alder is the dominant species. The regeneration occurring on the soil is richer in species and has a larger share of shrub species. In the case of regeneration on the deadwood, seedlings appear first on trees fallen before the flood. Over the time, the role of deadwood as a substrate for the development of regeneration increases and the role of fallen trees is the greater, the greater is the fraction (coverage) of the flooded areas. Studies show that the continuous occurrence of the deadwood accelerates habitat regeneration after a disturbance such as the occurrence of a beaver pond.

Tourist traffic is a socio-economic phenomenon and it has its specific features. The increase in the pace of life has its consequences mainly in the ways of organizing free time, and it has to do with a good rest. Many definitions and classifications of tourist traffic can be found in the subject literature. The intensity of tourist traffic varies in different seasons of the year. It should be noted that in addition to the proximity of the place of residence, qualities of the natural environment have been the main motive to come to the Białowieża Forest. This has been due to such factors as the attractiveness of the area, geographic location, international events and historical conditions. Therefore, the stay in the area of the Białowieża Forest focuses mainly on its exploration, experiences, leisure and entertainment. Studies have shown that there is a clear trend towards shortening the length of stay, and a few weeks’ holiday trips to one place have a tendency virtually to disappear. At the same time, weekend trips in summer and winter are growing in popularity.

Traditional conceptualizations presume that landscape and nature in general are characterized by a striving for balance. In consequence, environmental protection chiefly consists in conservation of the existing state, without making allowances for the dynamic changes caused by vital processes taking place in those landscapes, human and non-human alike. The current dispute concerning the protection of the Białowieża Forest is nothing but an upshot of the differences between the involved with respect to what should be protected on top of how it should be done. This study outlines the problems deriving from conceptualizations of nature and landscape as static entities and comes forward with a proposal of conceiving landscape not as an “image of the land”1 but a corporeal experience of being in a space, on which climate change, civilizational and social transformation, political decisions, and bark beetles all have their impact.

The article presents a hypothetical history of a stand and the occurring changes resulting from the on−going regeneration processes in the Tilio−Carpinetum hornbeam community following the past forms of forest utilisation. The anthropogenic destruction of stands took place most probably at the end of the 18th century. The regeneration process started at the beginning of the 19th century had led to the appearance of a spruce stand which disappeared in the middle of the 20th century. A lime−spruce−hornbeam stand was formed in its place. Since over 70 years, the regeneration process has been continuing under strict protection regime.

The aim of this study is to find the most common species of lichens in the Reserve “Lipiny” in the Białowieża Forest. Occurrence of 33 species of lichens, especially epiphytic has been confirmed. Air pollution can be determined by bio-indicators species of lichens. The main feature of lichens as bio-indicators is the ability to absorb water and minerals from rain water and water vapor directly from surface of the thallus. These organisms are extremely sensitive to pollution of the atmosphere, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

Opis:
The study concerned changing status of water retention within an unique nature complex of the Białowieża Primeval Forest. The retention was evaluated based on an analysis of research results on water outflow from the lowland catchment of the river Łutownia – representative for physiographic conditions as well as those of habitats and tree stands in Poland’s part of the Forest. The catchment in the lowland hydrometric dissection at the Pogorzelce village – Old Białowieża Wilderness, covers the area of 120.1 km2 with natural flow conditions preserved. A unified sequence of measurements carried out since 1966 using unchanged methodology with respect to precipitation, air temperature and forest management status allowed to separate different phases of changes occurring in water resources of this protected forest complex. There were appraised periodical runoff changes and cycles including a decrease in water resources which occurred at the turn of the century. The retention capacity of the catchment was determined based on periodical changes in rainfall-runoff relations and the ongoing process of deteriorating water conditions of forest ecosystem was interpreted.

Celem pracy było określenie zmian w występowaniu pierwiastków biogennych w wodzie rzeki Łutownia, przepływającej przez tereny chronione Puszczy Białowieskiej. Zakres analiz obejmował określenie temperatury i odczynu wody (pH), przewodnictwa elektrolitycznego, zawartość pierwiastków biogennych (azotu amonowego, azotanów III i V, fosforanów) oraz tlenu rozpuszczonego.
The main purpose of this work was defining seasonal changes of biogenic elements in Lutownia river flowing through the protected areas of Bialowieza Forest. The range of analyses included measurements of temperature, water reaction, electrolytic conductivity, biogenic elements level (ammonium nitrogen, nitrates III i V, phosphates) and dissolved oxygen. On study area analyzed water corresponded to II class of water purity; level of dissolved oxygen was low and content of biogenic elements indicates an average pollution. The Lutownia river brings many urban pollution form near Teremiski village. This fact influences on water purity level and eutrophication of surrounding forest areas. The water of Lutownia river flowing through protected areas Bialowieza Forest does not meet the requirements of water purity. The main problem of last years is sudden reduction water level until the complete disappearance in several summer months, what cause the negative changes in habitats.

Natural variability of pseudogley forest soils in the Białowieża National Park was characterised on the basis of five soil exposures. Two of them were located in a water-logged site, one in a mound one in a patch with dominance of deciduous trees, and one in a spruce biogrup. It was found that pseudogley soils of a natural moist deciduous forest show additional differentiation in the form of characteristic micromosaics. There is a pronounced impact of the species structure in a treestand, uprooted trees and hoofed mammals on the properties of the soil cover. Changes resulting from the above biotic factory were observed in all the analysed physical, physico-chemical and chemical soil parameters.

The structure of timber sales in forest districts of the Białowieża Forest in the years 2008−2015 is presented. The Białowieża Forest is one of the most valuable natural areas in Europe. The data from the reports generated by the State Forests Information System of the Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts were used for the research. The information contained in the forest management plans and nature conservation programs of the surveyed forest districts was also used. The volume of the sold merchantable timber in the Białowieża Forest amounted to 669,072 m3, of which 63.43% was softwood and 36.57% hardwood. Among the softwood assortment, sales of the large−sized timber amounted to 44.42%, while of the medium−sized timber to 55.58%. For the large−sized hardwood, the share of sales amounted to 30.66%, while for the medium−sized hardwood to 69.34%. The small−sized timber was sold at 22,389 m3, with the share of hardwood assortments being 82%, and of softwood 18%. A small share in the sales of small−sized timber is caused by the lack of FSC certification by forest districts, which excludes large industrial companies that buy predominantly the medium−sized coniferous timber assortments. The average price obtained from the sale of timber in the the Białowieża Forest in the analysed period was 134.7 PLN/m3. At a price higher than the average, wood was sold in the Białowieża and Hajnówka forest districts, while in the Browsk Forest District the timber was sold at a price lower than the average. The total volume of merchantable timber harvested in the forest districts of the Białowieża Forest in the analysed years, including the small−sized timber, amounted to 686,684 m3, with 691,461 m3 of timber being sold. The volume of the merchantable timber sold at that time was 669,072 m3, which constituted only 0.24% of the total timber sold at the State Forests in Poland.

Opis:
The article presents results of excavations carried out at an alleged barrow cemetery located in the western part of the Białowieża Primeval Forest, Poland. The site, discovered in 1996 and verified in 2016, consists of 10 mounds. In 2017, the first excavations were carried out when the mound no. 3, with a diameter of c. 9 m and a relative height of c. 0.7 m, located on the northern edge of the site, was chosen for research. In the mound 39 potsherds were found. The scarcity of ceramic material and the high degree of its fragmentation make the stylistic analysis difficult. The technological and stylistic features of the discussed pottery are typical for ceramics from a wide timespan, ranging from the Pre-Roman Period to the Late Roman Period. Their precise dating and cultural affiliation are difficult to determine due not only to the small size of the collection but also to the lack of well-dated comparative materials from the Białowieża Forest and its surroundings. A 14C analysis of charcoal obtained from the embankment of the mound yielded an approximation which fits between the second half of the 3rd century and the early 6th century. The cul- tural situation of north-eastern Poland in the Pre-Roman and Roman periods remains insufficiently recognised. Excavations carried out over the past dozen years have revealed many settlements related to the local culture group of the Hatched Pottery Culture and the Wielbark Culture, with some influences flowing from the postZarubintsy circle. In the course of the excavations, no human bones were found which would unambiguously confirm the sepulchral function of the mound. The Sacharewo mound is a part of a wider category of objects known from throughout the Białowieża Forest in which no bones were discovered but only fragments of clay vessels or charcoal layers.
