The article presents the late authorship of Miron Białoszewski, especially his poems collected in the book Odczepić się (1978) and a diary Chamowo (2009) that are a document of the poet’s life in the block of flats after his removal to the flat in a tower block at the Lizbońska Street in Warsaw in 1975. In these texts we may notice the new way of writing that was formed by new accommodation and living arrangement that influenced the poets’ life. On the other hand the room on the ninth floor occurs the place that was marked with sacrum and it puts an impact on the poets’ metaphysical and supernatural experience. The flat in the tower block has also influenced the author’s perspective and the way of writing, so that Białoszewski has experienced terminal situation – being between the two forms of living, balancing between the earth and heaven, profanum and sacrum. The removal starts to resemble a ferry across Styx, and the ninth floor becomes an unwanted porch of eternity. The titled word odczepianie się (disconnecting, separating) from the past and being at the top of the tower block means the new beginning for the poet, and writing becomes an imitation of the God’s act of creation that helps Białoszewski to accommodate in the world after heart attack and removal.

This article discusses the presence of railway epiphanies in the works of Miron Białoszewski, in particular their reference to queer events, understood as the presence of non-heteronormative meaning or desire. I examine the presence of trams, subways and railways in Białoszewski’s trips to Paris, Budapest and New York. Travelling by train can induce transgressive impulses and is often an occasion for expressing hidden tendencies, for instance homosexual behaviours. The experience of the train journey, which builds up weariness and drowsiness, can contribute to people experiencing a lack of boundaries and limits around them, with the consequence of everything becoming more confusing, obscure, and fluid. The movement of the train can cause a trance state, and due to the walking between the world of the conscious and subconscious mind, passengers evolve into “transpersons”, that is to say people “in the transition”, “on the way”, and “between”. Their gender becomes fluid, mobile, and “in motion”. This paper also analyses the figure of “derailed person” used by Artur Sandauer when comparing Białoszewski to Genet as a means of encoding homosexuality, here understood as a figure of the queer “derailment” of heteronormativity.

Jadwiga Stańczakowa was a blind writer, who was more known as a friend of Miron Białoszewski than for her own literary work. Meanwhile, she is the author of several books of poetry, autobiographical prose and a diary. Miron Białoszewski was certainly master for her, thanks to him she began to write about his own blindness. Although that all her work was connected with Białoszewski, it is worth to hear her own voice, especially in the context of disability studies. In this article the author is trying to bring out the poetess of the Białoszewski’s shadows. First of all, the author pointed out that blindness was a magical experience treated as a basis of lirycs. But the dysfunction of sight has also been a cause of recurring depressions. The writing during this ‘double disease’ was particularly difficult and made sense of self-therapy.

This paper aims to reconstruct the history, characterised by several attempts, of the publication of an Italian translation of the book Pamiętnik z powstania warszawskiego (1970) by Miron Białoszewski. I shall present, for the first time, unpublished communication material (1995) produced by the publishing house Voland (Rome), which provides evidence that Barbara Adamska Verdiani, who is curiously one of the book’s main characters, tried to translate the work. This article discusses several translation and editing issues concerning the Italian edition of Białoszewski’s text, such as the challenge of transposing the writer’s register, defined by Barańczak’s (1976) as “childish” and “colloquial”, and which came to be somehow obscured by editing conventions. Also, this research contrasts the choices made in the Italian translation to several relevant textual sources that range from George Orwell’s (1946) quest for non-verbal formulation of ideas, Roland Barthes’ (1973) concept of a “text de jouissance” and Lawrence Venuti’s (1995) theory of “foreignising translation” as opposed to a “fluent” one.

This text is an attempt at reading the relation between Miron Białoszewski’s prose and the urban space with the use of the category of urban practices and speech genres. In this perspective also literature becomes a type of urban practice, practicing the autobiographic space by Białoszewski The article demonstrates its meanings and functions. A particular emphasis was put upon the specificity of urban space and a “transmitter” of these practices, which is always “a transmission”, an active and meaning producing element of literary communication.

While presenting a wide range of cultural, historical and political factors which have influen- ced the Polish and the American reception of Miron Białoszewski’s A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising, this article tries to assess the role played in its reception abroad by the fact that the original text existed in several versions (censored and uncensored) and, on its way to print, got fitted out with multiple paratexts (introductions, prefaces and afterwords). Interestingly, there seems to be a connection between these fringe texts, the shaping of the translation as shown by choices made by the translators and editors, the evolving model of what is believed to be the right and proper handling of historical traumas, and the politics of remembrance in diverse historical settings and cultural imaginaries. An in-depth analysis of the details of translation and editorship opens up a series of broader questions about the status of a literary text functioning as evidence of traumatic historic events and the mechanisms of its reception by those directly affected (the family circle) and the people outside (with special attention being paid to the tension between the private and the public, and the normative versus the non-normative).

The article “To Live in Repetition: Performance, Memory and Trauma” offers a reflection on the psychoanalytical concept of repetition and its role in the understanding of the functions of traumatic memory and performance. The author offers the concept that performance can be understood not so much as a separate medium but as a very way of living through history and experiencing historical events towards the end of modernism. Thus performance seems to be most of all the means and not the aim of the artistic operation, while what is being produced (and remains), the material work itself, is not considered mere documentation. In such a context, performance emerges as a threshold genre, where the past becomes present in order to soon become past, this time however, necessarily shifted and dislocated by the very gesture of repetition and remaking. The author analyses the work of Miron Białoszewski in his war-time memories as a performance of sorts which is based on the dynamics of repetition and reenactment: the subject of the interpretation is not only the written aspect of the memoir, but also gestures towards the process preceding the writing, such as the author’s oral performances, his “talking” as well as recording and last but not least, the oral reenactment of the book in the Polish Radio studio.

Artykuł referuje stan badań nad przestrzenią w literaturze, poczynając od ustaleń strukturalistów, przez semiotykę, po antropologię i spatial turn. Stawia tezę, że współczesny powrót przestrzeni w badaniach literaturoznawczych jest spowodowany popularnością teorii postkolonialnej. Autorka do dotychczasowych reinterpretacji postkolonialnych w badaniach nad literaturą środkowoeuropejską dołącza grupę tekstów powstałych w lub w odniesieniu do czasów socjalistycznych. Omówione teksty autorstwa Bohumila Hrabala, Mirona Białoszewskiego i Wolfganga Hilbiga przy użyciu stylistyki karnawału kreują różne przestrzenie kontestacji oficjalnego dyskursu o subwersywnym potencjale: knajpę, dworce i bazary oraz świat podziemnego Berlina.
The article reports the state of research on the space in literature, starting with the findings of the structuralists, through semiotics, to anthropology and the spatial turn. It argues that the modern return of the space took place due to the popularity of the post-colonial theory in literary studies. The author adds a group of texts created in or in relation to the socialist’ times to the existing post-colonial interpretations of the Central European culture. The texts by Bohumil Hrabal, Miron Białoszewski and Wolfgang Hilbig, discussed using the carnival stylistics, create different spaces of contestation of the official discourse, which posses a subversive potential: a pub, railway stations and bazaars and the underground world of Berlin.

The essay calls for filling a gap in the studies on Warsaw Uprising concerning the place of queer people. A recent play, Snakepit by Joanna Oparek is considered, and the “scandal” surrounding Elżbieta Janicka’s academic work Festung Warschau is analysed, but the main source of understanding non-normative masculinities and sexualities is Miron Białoszewski’s Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising. The author offers a “paranoid” reading of traces, suggestions, allusions, and “illogical” fragments to build a working metaphor of queer acquaintances as an alternative “map” without the map. Finally he invokes the role of the picaresque narrative convention in representing such paranoid queer relationships.

Artykuł został zainspirowany esejami Georga Simmla, niemieckiego filozofa (Most i drzwi) oraz książką Douwego Draaismy, holenderskiego teoretyka pamięci, Fabryka nostalgii. O fenomenie pamięci wieku dojrzałego (2010). Omawiam zjawisko osobistych wspomnień poety, czyli reminiscencje. Reprezentacja pamięci w poezji Białoszewskiego została przedstawiona na przykładach: anamnezy, upamiętnienia, zapomnienia. Botaniczne motywy pełnią tu funkcję medium pamięci.
The article was inspired by the essays of George Simmel, the German philosopher who wrote " Bridge and door" and the book by Douwe Draaisma, the Dutch theoretician of memory, "The Fabric of nostalgia. About the phenomenon of mature memory" (2010). I discuss the phenomenon of the autobiographical memory of the poet, or reminiscence. Representation of this memory in the poetry of Białoszewski has been featured in examples: anamnesis, commemoration, oblivion. Botanical themes fulfil the features of the medium for memory.

The article builds on Zbigniew Mikołejko’s claim that “the trash mountains” are a convenient metaphor. According to the philosopher, the colloquial phrase allows you to talk about almost everything, but it distances you from empiricism, from authentic rubbish dumps. The author tests the usefulness of this metaphor by analysing the interactions between its parts. They show two symbolic processes: the desacralisation of the mountains and the ennoblement of rubbish. The article focuses on the first one and asks about the images of the hills of the Anthropocene epoch. By interpreting two literary pictures of the trash mountains, an author examines the functioning of that metaphor. In Miron Białoszewski’s Chamowo, the Warsaw landfill is terrifying and a sign of loss. However, in Zbigniew Rokita’s reportage, entitled Kajś. Opowieść o Górnym Śląsku, an industrial heap that is a mountain made by people, is a deformation of nature that has become a permanent part of the region’s landscape. The metaphor of “trash mountains” opens access to ecological issues and becomes a form of involvement in the analysed works.

In his piece, the author of the article ponders on the experience of loss in human life. It is this particular experience, as well as the accompanying longing, that form the basic components of an elegiac attitude. However, in its broader sense, loss becomes one of the most universal experiences in literature and the arts of the twentieth century. After all, they shared the conviction that reality, no matter how looked upon, was never fully accessible to us and that man always played a losing game with it. Contrary to outward appearances, the above also applies to the creators of avant-garde movements. An analysis of the poem Do NN***, written by Miron Białoszewski, carried out first within the context of elegy and then with reference to the techniques and the program of cubism, makes us aware that Białoszewski somehow evades both elegiac mood and the avant-garde principles such as they are underlined in its program. The driving force for his writing is then curiosity. And it is curiosity, and just curiosity, independent and one that cannot be reduced to just the desire to know, that forms the only real alternative that, in a way, always remains metaphysical.

Artykuł stanowi analizę porównawczą i interpretację dwóch tekstów poetyckich: wiersza Przegięcie autorstwa Piotra Sommera, pochodzącego z tomu Dni i noce (2009), oraz utworu Mirona Białoszewskiego z 1961 roku, rozpoczynającego się od słów „kochać taka sztuka”. W obu z nich kluczową rolę odgrywa metafora cykania-tykania, przywołująca antyczny metaliteracki topos poety-cykady, ale i problematyzująca fakt ciągłego pomiaru czasu w nowoczesności. Odwołując się do używanego przez Wolfganga Ernsta pojęcia chronopoetyki oraz do postsekularnej analizy sestyny zaproponowanej przez Giorgia Agambena, autor artykułu stawia pytanie o związek mechanicznego odmierzania czasu i temporalnej struktury współczesnego wiersza wolnego. Porównanie chronopoetyk obu analizowanych tekstów koncentruje się na funkcji zabiegów rytmicznych, powtórzeń i, licznych zwłaszcza u Białoszewskiego, chwytów udziwnienia. Próba opisu ich specyficznych czasowości zreinterpretować pozwala obecne w treści tropy egzystencji: bezsenności u Sommera i ciemnej nocy ducha Jana od Krzyża u Białoszewskiego.
The paper is a comparative analysis and interpretation of two poetic texts: the poem Przegięcie by Piotr Sommer, from the volume Dni i noce (2009), and Miron Białoszewski’s poem from 1961, starting with the words kochać taka sztuka. In both of them, the key role is played by the metaphor of chirping-ticking, evoking the ancient metaliterary topos of the poet-cicada, but also problematizing the fact of the continuous measurement of time in modernity. Referring to the notion of chronopoetics used by Wolfgang Ernst and to the post-secular analysis of the sestina proposed by Giorgio Agamben, the paper raises a question about the relationship between the mechanical measurement of time and the temporal structure of modern free verse. The comparison of the chronopoetics in both analyzed texts focuses on the function of rhythmic devices, repetitions and, especially in Białoszewski, effects of defamiliarization. An attempt to describe their specific temporalities allows us to reinterpret the traces of existence present in the content: insomnia in Sommer and John of the Cross’ dark night of the soul in Białoszewski.

Opis:
The text concerns the expansion of non-artistic forms of language in Polish literature after the “Polish thaw”. They are separated from real context, processed in an experimental, radical and original way and (re)used in the literary work as linguistic, ready-made objects or as a part of artistic recycling. I point out three strategies of language processing: contrasting, deforming and dismantling, which are present in works by three post avant-garde writers: Leopold Buczkowski, Tadeusz Różewicz and Miron Białoszewski. Striving for innovation and experiment, thinking of language with growing suspicion, focusing on its tendency to petrification allows their work to be seen as the continuation of modernist tendencies.

Opis:
Miron Bialoszewski is known for his untypical and idiosyncratic language of his poetry, as well as prose and drama that he has created. However, it is possible to find many connections between those linguistic experiments and the strategies used by polish avant-garde poets during the interwar years. It makes the works of Bialoszewski both innovative and dependent on the history of literature. Through the analysis of his specif-ic language and the content of his poetry, as well as the comparison to the works and statements of the polish avant-garde representatives, author of this paper tries to recre-ate the philosophical backgroud of Bialoszewski's poems and explain how is the concept of music present in them. The article is divided into two main parts. The first main prob-lem is a question about the philosophical condition of the language that we can encoun-ter in this poetry — are we free in using our language or maybe we are limited by the word? The negative response to the first question leads to the necessity of possible solu-tions. Here music appears. It seems to be for Bialoszewski as the possibility of escaping from the limitations of the language. At the same time, music in his poetry is a new way of describing the world and a form of expressing ones thoughts.
