    25 czerwca 2015 roku minęło 900 lat od założenia przez św. Bernarda klasztoru w Clairvaux. W tym też kontekście warto przypomnieć tę wybitną postać, która bardzo silnie odcisnęła się na dziejach XII-wiecznej Europy. Ponadto 800 lat temu obradował jeden z ważniejszych soborów średniowiecza – Laterański IV. Miał on uporządkować relacje między Kościołem i władzą świecką, ogłosić kolejną krucjatę oraz rozprawić się z sektą katarów. Wspomnieć należy nadto 600-lecie urodzin Jana Długosza. Jego Annales stanowią niezastąpione źródło do poznania dziejów Polski średniowiecznej. Połączenie tych rocznic ze światem cystersów stanowi przedmiot niniejszego artykułu.
    The 900th anniversary of the establishment of the Monastery in Clairvaux by St. Bernard passed on the 25th of June. In this context it is worth recalling this distinguished person who strongly imprinted in the history of the twelfth-century Europe. Moreover, 800 years ago there was one of the most important councils of the Middle Ages – the Fourth Lateran. He had to sort out relationships between the Church and the secular power, announce the next crusade and deal with the sect of the Cathars. What is more, it should be mentioned that it is the 600th anniversary of the birth of Jan Długosz. His Annales are an irreplaceable source of knowledge of the history of the Polish medieval. The recalled anniversaries lead us from Cîteaux, through Clairvaux to Kraków and Jędrzejów. They connect St. Bernard with Wincenty Kadłubek and Jan Długosz. The combination of these anniversaries with the Cistercian world is the subject of this article.

    W 1147 r. Bernard z Clairvaux napisał list w sprawie krucjaty przeciwko pogańskim Słowianom zamieszkałym na wschód od Łaby. Wyraził w nim pogląd, że naród Słowian należy albo całkowicie unicestwić, albo nawrócić. W artykule została postawiona hipoteza, że to słynne sformułowanie Bernarda powinno być interpretowane w kontekście jego poglądów dotyczących walki z herezją. Podstawą analizy są, oprócz przedmiotowego listu, także niektóre inne pisma Bernarda.
    In 1147, Bernard of Clairvaux wrote a letter regarding a crusade against the pagan Slavs residing on the east side of the Elbe. In his opinion, the nation of Slavs should be either totally exterminated, or converted. The author of the article puts forward a hypothesis that this famous statement of Bernard’s statement ought to be interpreted in the context of his views and opinions on the fight against heresy. The analysis is based on, besides the mentioned letter, some other of Bernard’s writings.

Autor artykułu stara sięwyjaśnić tę niespójność – mógłby sądzić współczesny czytelnik – w jego nauce,która wynika z krytyki poglądu o niepokalanym poczęciu i jednoczesnej akceptacjiposiadania przez Maryję pełnego uświęcenia. Wyjaśnienie tej kwestii jestkonieczne, by zobaczyć, iż oryginalna myśl mariologiczna św. Bernarda z Clairvauxjest mocno osadzona w pewnym kluczu teologicznym, a jego wizja miała wpływna późniejszą mariologię.

    Alexander of Malonne – persona mixta: militant bishop at the edges of the Christian world and his historiographical portraitThe narration of the Master Vincentius dedicated to Alexander of Malonne (Chronica Polonorum, bk. III, chaps. 8–9), the bishop of Płock (1129–1156) is undoubtedly the most intriguing evidence addressing the commitment of the Polish medieval bishop in military action. Although such information goes well with other evidence indicating the aristocratic style of this bishop’s ministry resembling those of “courtier” Reichsbischof, Michał Tomaszek has already pointed out that motives as well as the entire construction of Vincentius’s story are the evidence of the chronicler’s reference to some early medieval literary patterns. This analysis makes it even clearer, highlighting however, that the chronicler while creating the portrait of Alexander of Malonne entered the more contemporary discourse on the admissibility limits of bishop’s military activity.The analysis shows that the starting point for the chronicler’s writing were the views of Bernard of Clairvaux stigmatizing all the possibilities of combining the attitudes appropriate for a warrior and a cleric. Vincentius, however, benefited from the “loophole” left by Clairvaux abbot and some canonists, which granted the permission to combine these two responsibilities with the restriction that actions taken by bishop would not cause the destruction of his spiritual perfection or pastoral function, and hence they would not change him into a chimera-monster. Being influenced by the idea of bishop as a persona mixta or gemina persona, the theory assuming the possibility of using two kinds of weapon (two swords) by the Church or even some views of St Bernard stated in his Liber ad Milites Templi de laude novae militiae, Vincentius advocated clearly for the possibility of getting the diocesan involved in the military sphere. The applied strategy aiming at the legitimization of Alexander’s actions, reveals Vincentius’s broad knowledge of arguments defending military prerogatives attributed to episcopacy, and says a lot about the chronicler itself, who did not have to be so ardent supporter of the Church reform as it is quite commonly believed.

    Artykuł pt. Bernard z Clairvaux, Tomasz z Akwinu i uświęcenie Najświętszej Maryi Panny jest poświęcony kontrowersji wokół Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, którą ujawnił List 174 do kanoników lyońskich napisany przez Cysterskiego Opata. Sformułowane w nim argumenty zostały przyjęte przez św. Tomasza z Akwinu i wykorzystane w debacie teologicznej, wpływając w ten sposób na kształtowanie się stanowiska odnośnie do uświęcenia Maryi u początków Jej ziemskiego życia. Niniejszy przyczynek zwraca uwagę na wpływ Bernarda z Clairvaux na stanowisko Akwinaty w kwestii uświęcenia Dziewicy Maryi, która do tej pory zdawała się być niedostrzegana w literaturze przedmiotu.
    Der Artikel mit dem Titel Bernhard von Clairvaux, Thomas von Aquin und die Heiligung der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria widmen sich der Kontroverse um die Unbefleckte Empfängnis der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria, die im Brief 174 des Zisterzienserabtes an die Canones von Lyon offenbart wurde. Die darin formulierten Argumente wurden von St. Thomas von Aquin und in der theologischen Debatte verwendet und damit die Haltung zur Heiligung Mariens zu Beginn ihres irdischen Lebens beeinflusst. Dieser Beitrag hebt den Einfluss Bernhards von Clairvaux auf die Position von Thomas von Aquin zur Heiligung der Jungfrau Maria hervor, der in der Literatur zu diesem Thema bisher scheinbar übersehen wurde.
    The article entitled Bernard of Clairvaux, Thomas Aquinas and the sanctification of the Blessed Virgin Mary is devoted to the controversy surrounding the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was revealed in Letter 174 written to the Canons of Lyon by the Cistercian Abbot. The arguments formulated in it were adopted by St. Thomas Aquinas and used in the theological debate, thus influencing the shaping of the position regarding the sanctification of Mary at the beginning of her earthly life. This contribution highlights the influence of Bernard of Clairvaux on Aquinas’ position on the sanctification of the Virgin Mary, which until now has seemed to be overlooked in the literature.

    The collections in Croatian churches and monasteries keep treasure of outstanding cultural and historical value, which is still waiting to be studied, properly evaluated and published. Among just such precious items is a composite, acephalic and lacunose manuscript codex from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, which is kept in the treasury of Split Cathedral (626 C). Although it is handsome, rich in various data and very interesting, in the last hundred or so years since it was rediscovered, it has not attracted any great attention from the cultural or the scholarly public. Here is set out a codicological description listing all the anomalies and damages, established the contents and authorship of the texts; at the end some assumptions and arguments backing them up will be put forward as well as some indications of its subsequent fortune.
