Целю статьи является анализ романа Виктора Пелевина Generation „П” в контексте теории «текучей современности» польского философа и социолога Зигмунта Баумана. Как российский писатель, так и польский ученый указывают на отрицательные результаты влияния современной - необыкновенно гибкой, текучей, свободной от границ и условий - коммерческой цивилизации на повседневную жизнь человека, его менталитет, систему ценностей, самоидентификацию и чувство собственного достоинства. Философии повседневности, основанной на апофеозе «маленьких действий» и заботе о личных идеалах угрожает философия «текучей современности», провозглашающая подражание таким идолам, как реклама и масс-медия.  
The purpose of the article is to analyze the novel by Victor Pelevin Generation “P” in the context of the theory of “fluid modernity” by the Polish philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. Both the Russian writer and the Polish scientist point out the negative effects of the modern - unusually flexible, fluid, free from borders and conditions - commercial civilization on a person’s daily life, his mentality, value system, self-identification and selfesteem.
Celem artykułu jest analiza powieści Generation P Wiktora Pielewina w kontekście teorii płynnej nowoczesności polskiego filozofa i socjologa Zygmunta Baumana. Zarówno rosyjski pisarz, jak i polski uczony wskazują na negatywne skutki wpływu nowoczesnej – niezwykle elastycznej, płynnej, wolnej od granic i warunków – cywilizacji komercyjnej na codzienne życie człowieka, jego mentalność, system wartości, samoidentyfikację i poczucie własnej wartości. Filozofia życia codziennego, oparta na apoteozie "drobnych działań" i dbałości o osobiste ideały jest zagrożona przez filozofię płynnej nowoczesności, głoszącą naśladownictwo idoli takich jak reklama i środki masowego przekazu.

Artykuł analizuje książkę Wygnaniec. 21 scen z życia Zygmunta Baumana Artura Domosławskiego przez pryzmat narracji historycznej (faktograficznej) oraz perspektyw problemowych, zaproponowanych przez Domosławskiego. W tym pierwszym aspekcie punktem odniesienia stały się przede wszystkim dwie inne wydane niedawno biografie Baumana autorstwa Dariusza Rosiaka i Izabeli Wagner. W tym drugim podjęty został głównie trop ofiary jako klucz do odczytania życia Baumana. Autor artykułu proponuje również rozważenie problemu intelektualnej oryginalności polskiego socjologa.
The article analyses the book Wygnaniec. 21 scen z życia Zygmunta Baumana (An Exile. 21 Scenes from the Life of Zygmunt Bauman) by Artur Domosławski through the prism of historical (factual) narration and problem perspectives proposed by Domosławski. In this first aspect, the main point of reference is made by two other recently published biographies of Zygmunt Bauman – by Dariusz Rosiak and Izabela Wagner. The latter deals primarily with the metaphor of sacrifice as a key to reading Bauman’s life. The author of the review article also proposes reflecting on the problem of the intellectual originality of the Polish sociologist.

W artykule autorka zastanawia się nad motywem ogrodu obecnym w książkach napisanych z perspektywy dziecka przez ocalonych z Shoah przedstawicieli zamożnych spolonizowanych rodzin żydowskich. Jako materiał do analizy posłużyły powstałe pod koniec XX wieku: powieść Romy Ligockiej Dziewczynka w czerwonym płaszczyku oraz wspomnienia – Janiny Bauman Zima o poranku i Utracone dzieciństwo Yehudy Nira.Występujący w wybranych książkach ogród to miejsce silnie oddziałujące na bohaterów, miejsce rzeczywiste lub obecne w opowieściach i poznawane w procesie lektury (np. Tajemniczy ogród Frances Hodges Burnett). Kształt tej przestrzeni określają ludzie, założyciele i spadkobiercy, zawodowi ogrodnicy, ale także przypadkowi użytkownicy czy nawet barbarzyńcy i wandale. W analizowanych książkach występują: miejski park, ogród botaniczny, ogrody rodzinne, ogródki działkowe, wreszcie ogródek warzywny. Niektóre z nich istnieją wyłącznie jako nazwy, inne są opisane bardziej szczegółowo, a nawet zdają się współuczestniczyć w losach bohaterów. To przestrzenie ważne dla topografii miasta, historii rodziny albo jednostki. Wyznaczają miejsca akcji, determinują, ale i projektują zachowania bohaterów, wreszcie stają się świadectwem tego, co minione. Przywoływane we wspomnieniach i opowieściach o czasach zagłady potwierdzają swoje znaczenie w wojennym życiu dzieci i młodocianych.
In the article, the author reflects on the theme of a garden present in books written from the perspective of a child by Shoah survivors, representatives of wealthy, Polonised Jewish families. The materials for analysis were texts written at the end of the 20th century: a novel by Roma Ligocka The Girl in a Red Coat, and memoirs by Janina Bauman (Winter in the Morning) and Yehuda Nir (The Lost Childhood).The garden present in selected books is a place that has a strong influence on the characters, a place that is real or present in stories, and a place the reader gets to know in the process of reading (e.g. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodges Burnett). The shape of this space is determined by people: founders and heirs, professional gardeners, but also casual users or even barbarians and vandals. The analysed books present the following gardens: a city park, a botanical garden, family gardens, allotment gardens, and finally a vegetable garden. Some of them exist only as names, others are described in more detail, and even seem to participate in the fate of protagonists. These spaces are important to the city’s topography, family history, or the history of an individual. They provide settings and determine – but also project – the behaviour of the characters; finally, they become a testimony to what is gone. Invoked in memoirs and stories about the times of the Holocaust, they confirm their importance in the wartime lives of children and adolescents.

Niniejszy tekst odnosi się do sytuacji, w której problemem nie tyle jest brak danych, ile ich nadmiar, a także liczne legendy, jakie narosły wokół głównej postaci rekonstrukcji historii życia – Zygmunta Baumana. Artykuł wskazuje na wagę kontekstu i znaczeń towarzyszących odtworzonej biografii, co umożliwia lepsze zrozumienie głównej postaci.
The article focuses on extracting from the shadows certain events that, for strategic or accidental reasons, did not leave any traces in the archives, testimonies and various documents of people who were the subject of research (most often in the case of the reconstruction of their biographies). This text refers to a situation in which the problem is not so much the lack of data as their excess, as well as numerous legends that have grown up around the main figure of the reconstruction of life history – Zygmunt Bauman. The article emphasizes the importance of context and meanings accompanying the recreated biography, which enables a better understanding of the main character.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie metafor, które ujmują człowieka jako wędrowca, a świat jako miejsce jego wędrówki. Punktem wyjścia jest tu porównanie dwóch postaw pielgrzyma: charakterystycznej dla społeczeństwa tradycyjnego, której symbolem jest Abraham, i właściwej epoce nowoczesności – purytańskiego przedsiębiorcy. W tym kontekście ukazane zostają przemiany, jakie zaszły w owej „wędrówce” w późnej nowoczesności. Przedmiotem analizy są postacie „turysty” i „włóczęgi” opisane przez Zygmunta Baumana.
This article is devoted to the analysis of metaphors of a person as a wanderer and the world as a place for wandering. The starting-point is the comparison of the two figures of a pilgrim: the one in traditional society (Abraham) and the other in modernity (a Puritan). At this background the main issue of the transformation of “wandering” in the postmodern times is tackled. The figures of “a tourist” and “a vagabond” described by Zygmunt Bauman are the subject of analysis.

This article examines the works of two social critics – Paulo Freire and Zygmunt Bauman – with regard to the idea of education as a cause of dehumanization and/or humanization. The key terms and ideas the authors use in their critique of dehumanization within social relations are compared: Freire’s concept of banking model of pedagogy is analysed in contrast to Bauman’s philosopheme of adiaphorization. With both similar and very different understandings of what it means to be human, the two authors search for alternatives to the status quo and to power relations of human subjects being treated as objects – be it, in Freire’s case, the oppressed in the 20th century Brazil or, in Bauman’s case, the Holocaust victims in the 20th century and persons in the contemporary 21st century consumer society. The article aims at founding the thesis that both authors promote humanization, although in different ways, and that Bauman’s humanization through metaphors is in times of liquid modernity a contemporary form of Freire’s modern critical pedagogy. The article also aims to generally present Bauman’s conception of education as the author so far has been much less introduced in educational sciences than Freire is, and a comparison of their education philosophies reveals how modern and postmodern principles of the two theories and their practical implications complement one another and engage in a possibility for a creative dialogue.

The influence on sociologists of texts by others is widely accepted and a standard line of investigation. However if books can be an influence it is not unreasonable to assume that other cultural products might be significant too in the formation of a sociologist. This Note addresses the possibility by exploring some of the possible meanings of a passing comment once made by Zygmunt Bauman. In conversation with the present author Bauman once said that Ingmar Bergman’s film Winter Light is important to him. This short Note attempts to work out why, and it focuses on the theme of vocation. It is crucial to stress that this Note was inspired by Bauman’s comment but works entirely at the level of publicly available texts. It is not to be assumed that Bauman would personally agree with this explanation.

For the last few months the financial crisis is being widely discussed. However, it was foreseen some time ago by at least two people who named its deep causes. A philosopher of culture, Zygmunt Bauman, claims that a postmodern utopia of “morality without ethical code” makes it impossible to solve problems created by our era of “liquid modernity”. George Soros, an American currency speculator, stock investor, businessman, philanthropist, political activist, and a pupil of Karl Popper, maintains that the crisis is a result of a victory of “transaction morality” over “morality of the open society”. The two diagnosis of the present crisis show that the process of deregulation of the economy should not lead to the point where ethics loses its normative functions. This is the lesson of the crisis. Capitalism must be ethical or none.

While writing this article, the author was inspired by “Między chwilą a pięknem. O sztuce w rozpędzonym świecie” by Zygmunt Bauman. Following Baumanian diagnosis of the contemporary art we are faced with the condition of our contemporary world. The main feature we can observe in both areas seems to be their ‘liquidity’. In this liquid context the author of the article focuses on contemporary architecture, which was omitted by Zygmunt Bauman. It appears that the most fixed, palpable and sturdy type of art also may assume a kind of liquid form – as in the case of so called ‘folding’, ‘downy’, or ‘pleated’ architecture proposed by Bernard Tschumi or Peter Eisenman who are strongly inspired by philosophical thoughts of Friedrich Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze, or Jacques Derrida.

The article discusses the main theses of Zygmunt Bauman’s book Modernity and the Holocaust, the contexts of its writing and its early critical reception in the 1990s. As an introduction to the issue’s theme, it focuses on the proposals for a contemporary interpretation of Bauman’s work put forward by the authors of the articles published in this issue of Studia Litteraria et Historica. In the final section, the author proposes a reading of Modernity and the Holocaust in relation to educational issues raised in the 1960s by Theodor W. Adorno.
Artykuł omawia główne tezy książki Zygmunta Baumana Nowoczesność i Zagłada, konteksty jej powstania oraz wczesną krytyczną recepcję w latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku. Jako wprowadzenie do tematu numeru koncentruje się na propozycjach współczesnej interpretacji dzieła Baumana, przedstawionych przez autorów i autorkę artykułów opublikowanych w niniejszym numerze „Studia Litteraria et Historica”. W końcowej części autor proponuje odczytanie Nowoczesności i Zagłady w odniesieniu do zagadnień edukacyjnych, podnoszonych w latach sześćdziesiątych przez Theodora W. Adorno.

The subject of this research is Internet folklore. In the present paper, Internet comments were interpreted as narratives unveiling a collective, axio-normative worldview. The main function of the analysed stories is to confirm the dualistic vision of the world that is based on the opposition of us vs. them. The research field was a Polish conservative web portal “wPolityce”. The subject of discussions of Internet users was prof. Zygmunt Bauman and the protest of the right-wing circles during one of his lectures at the University of Wroclaw in 2013.
