Terravecchia Formation in the Scillato Basin is a good example of development of a post-tectonic basin. Practically continuous exposures across that basin give the rare possibility to observe the lateral distribution of lithofacies and gradual changes of sedimentary succession from an alluvial fan, fluvial plan to lacustrine and, eventually, to marine setting. The alluvial fan deposits are generally represented by polymictic, disorganised or crudely organised conglomerates representing mainly flow and debris flow deposits. The fluvial plain association is characterized generally by cross-bedded sandstones with streaks of conglomerates laid down within a channel bar system. Flood-plain deposits are subordinate. Sedimentary structures suggest deposition in a braided river. The fluvial plain association pass laterally to lacustrine/fluvial plain deposits represented by grey to pinkish mudstones with channelised sandstones. As an effect of subsidence the Scillato Basin was invaded by marine/brackish environment, and marly mudstones and siltstones with subordinate sandstones were deposited. That variability of sedimentary facies can be explained by vertical tectonic movements.
Późnomioceńska formacja Terravecchia zachowana w basenie Scillato, stanowi dobry przykład rozwoju basenu posttektonicznego. Ciąg bardzo dobrych odsłonięć w poprzek basenu pozwolił na szczegółowe obserwacje rozkładu litofacji, struktur sedymentacyjnych oraz asocjacji facjalnych i ich wzajemnych związków. Wyróżnionych zostało kilka środowisk sedymentacyjnych, od stożka aluwialnego, przez rzekę roztokową po środowisko jeziorne i morskie. Osady stożka aluwialnego reprezentowane są przez czerwone i żółte, polimiktyczne zepieńce, o strukturach zarówno bezładnych jak i uporządkowanych, powstałe w wyniku działania prądów i spływów rumoszowych. Osady rzeki roztokowej to głównie przekątnie warstwowane piaskowce związane z różnego rodzaju łachami piaszczystymi. Mułowcowe osady równi zalewowych zachowały się tylko sporadycznie. Osady rzeczne przechodzą lateralnie w mułowcowe osady jeziorne z licznymi osadami kanałowymi w ich dolnej części. Pod koniec rozwoju basenu, w rezultacie subsydencji tektonicznej, nastąpiła ingresja morska i powyżej osadów rzeczno-jeziornych rozpoczęła się sedymentacja osadów brakiczno-morskich z poziomami fauny.

Opis:
Predicting flood discharges in the rivers of an ungauged basin is tedious because essential hydrological data is lacking. In mountainous countries like Nepal, the design of hydraulic structures in these steeply sloped rivers is of prime importance for flood control, as well as for electricity generation where hydraulic head is gained over short, steep reaches. This study illustrates a variety of approaches that can be used to perform flood frequency analysis of typical ungauged mountainous rivers, where discharge data are available from hydrologically similar catchments. The various methods are evaluated by comparing the goodness of fit of an array of hydrologic distribution functions. From each probability density function or regional empirical method, we predict the multi-year return periods for floods, information that is generally required to design the hydraulic structures. The analysis was done based on the annual maxima, peaks above threshold, and widely used regional empirical methods. This analysis was accomplished using the discharge data of Nayapul station near Jhapre Bagar collected from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Government of Nepal, Kathmandu. The analysis and results of this study paved the way for the hydraulic design of water systems in the ungauged study region and demonstrated how the information acquired can be used for water resource management in catchments with similar hydrologic features.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki studiów archeometalurgicznych dotyczących płaskiej siekiery, odkrytej przypadkowo w 2016 r. na gruntach miejscowości Łady, gm. Iłów, pow. sochaczewski. Zabytek jest pierwszym okazem eneolitycznej siekiery miedzianej z Mazowsza. Przeprowadzono badanie składu surowcowego siekiery (EDXRF) i analizę jej powierzchni (OM). Określono przynależność typologiczną zabytku i poddano pod dyskusję kulturowo- społeczny kontekst siekier płaskich na obszarze ziem polskich. Ustalono, że siekiera została odlana z miedzi arsenowej i nie była najprawdopodobniej użytkowana w pradziejach. Kontekst odkrycia oraz stan zachowania zabytku wskazują, że został on zdeponowany w środowisku mokrym. Na podstawie analizy typologicznej siekierę z Ład zaklasyfikowano do typu Bytyń w wariancie A. Powinno się zatem traktować ją jako pojedynczy skarb akwatyczny, zdeponowany przez wspólnoty kultury pucharów lejkowatych z Kotliny Warszawskiej między 3600/3500–3200/3100 cal.BC.
This work presents the archaeometallurgical studies performed on the flat axe discovered accidentally in 2016 near the village Łady, Iłów commune, Sochaczew district. The axe is the first find of such an object reported from Mazovia. The axe is described in terms of raw-material profile (EDXRF) as well as its macrostucture (OM). This has been juxtaposed throughout this work with the results of typological and contextual (sociocultural) analysis of the Bytyń axes, which have also been found on Polish territory. It has been established that the axe was cast from arsenical copper. It is likely that the find from Łady did not serve as a functional tool in the past. The discovery context and the state of preservation indicate that the axe was deposited in an aquatic environment. By means of a typological analysis the find from Łady was classified as a flat axe of Bytyń A type and therefore it should be considered as the single hoard deposited by the Funnel Beaker culture communities from the Warsaw Basin between 3600/3500 and 3200/3100 cal. BC.

Subject of the research were coal samples from the seams of Orzesze and Ruda beds from “Pniówek” coal mine. All samples represent methabituminous coal B, which present high vitrinite content (V mmf > 60%). Optical character of vitrinite from all analyzed coal samples is biaxial negative and it is characterized by low differentiation of bireflectance. The experiments have shown that the coal rank of investigated samples is generally decreasing with increasing both depth of coal seams and the distance between sampling point and the Carboniferous roof. It may suggests inversion of coalification. Specific types of macerals, typical for thermally metamorphosed coals have been found for all analysed coal samples. It was found, presence of such components like: fluorescing bituminous substance (FBS) filling of cellular spaces in semifusinite, fusinite, and funginite; pseudomorphs after megaspores exhibiting strong bireflectance, and anisotropic semifusinite. Petrographic components with a structure similar to structure of coke and pyrolytic carbon were observed rarely. Presence of colotelinite grains which are visible darker, impregnated with bituminous substance and exhibiting weak fluorescence may be related with influence of temperature on coal. Carbonates occur as filling of cellular spaces in semifusinite, in examined coal samples and there are the effect of thermal alteration of coal.
Przedmiotem badań były próbki węgla z pokładów warstw orzeskich i rudzkich KWK Pniówek. Badane próbki reprezentują węgiel średniouwęglony typu B (metabitumiczny), wysokowitrynitowy. Stwierdzono, że witrynit z badanych próbek ma dwuosiowy ujemny charakter optyczny i wykazuje małe zróżnicowanie w wartościach dwójodbicia. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że stopień uwęglenia badanych próbek generalnie maleje wraz ze wzrostem głębokości występowania pokładów węgla oraz ze wzrostem odległości miejsca opróbowania od stropu karbonu co może wskazywać na inwersję uwęglenia. We wszystkich analizowanych próbkach węgla stwierdzono występowanie specyficznych odmian macerałów typowych dla węgli zmetamorfizowanych termicznie. W próbkach stwierdzono obecność takich składników jak: fluoryzująca substancja bitumiczna (FBS) wypełniająca przestrzenie komórkowe w semifuzynicie, fuzynicie i funginicie; pseudomorfozy po makrosporach wykazujące silne dwójodbicie oraz anizotropowy semifuzynit. Rzadziej obserwowano składniki petrograficzne o strukturze wykazującej podobieństwo do struktury koksu i węgiel pirolityczny. Z oddziaływaniem temperatury na badany węgiel można wiązać także obecność w analizowanych próbkach wyraźnie ciemniejszych, przesyconych substancją bitumiczną, wykazujących słabą fluorescencję ziaren kolotelinitu. Przejawem przemian termicznych obserwowanych w badanych próbkach węgla może być także obecność węglanów najczęściej wypełniających przestrzenie komórkowe w semifuzynicie.

The Neogene basaltoid intrusions found in the S-7 borehole in the Sumina area (USCB) caused transformations of the adjacent Carboniferous rocks. The mineral and chemical compositions of the basaltoides are similar to those of the Lower Silesian basaltoides. The transformations that took place in the vicinity of the intrusion were manifested in the formation of natural coke, the secondary mineralization of these rocks (calcite, chlorite, zeolites and barite) and in the specific distribution of rare earths (REY). Among REY, the light elements (LREY) had the highest share, while the heavy elements (HREY) had the lowest share. Regardless of the lithological type of the analyzed rock, with increasing distance from the intrusion, the percentage of MREY and HREY elements increases at the expense of the light elements LREY. All analyzed distribution patterns of the REYs are characterized by the occurrence of anomalies, which often show a significant correlation with the distance of sampling points from the basaltoid intrusion. The specific distribution of REYs in the vicinity of the intrusion of igneous rocks is an indication of the impact of hydrothermal solutions associated with the presence of basaltoides on the rocks closest to them located at a temperature of over 200°C

The paper examined water resources insecurity arising from climatic change and variability, coupled with increased population and economic development in in Yewa basin, with a view to understanding the relationship between climatic variables and hydrological parameters operating within the basin. Thus, the study entails assessment of the effects of climate change and variability on water resources and its implication on both the physical environment and the hydrological regime, using the water evaluation and planning (WEAP) system model. Data employed included water supply and demand for Domestic, Commercial, Industrial and Agriculture, as well as climatic data (rainfall and Temperature) and runoff. As revealed by the Scenario fabrication, 45.24% of the annual water requirement within Yewa Basin is not met, with water potentials of Annual mean discharge of 3682.46 m3/s (±830.1) and Annual mean rainfall of 1106.26m (±475.25), and with coefficients of variation of 40.88 and 73.73, respectively. This deficit calls for an appropriate water resources management mechanism to be put into use in Yewa Basin.

The Lamongan Regency is an area in East Java, Indonesia, which often experiences drought, especially in the south. The Corong River basin is located in the southern part of Lamongan, which supplies the irrigation area of the Gondang Reservoir. Drought monitoring in the Corong River basin is very important to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural regions. This study aims to analyse the causal relationship between meteorological and agricultural drought indices represented by standardised precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and standard normalisation difference vegetation index (NDVI), using time series regression. The correlation between NDVI and SPEI lag 4 has the largest correlation test results between NDVI and SPEI lag, which is 0.41. This suggests that the previous four months of meteorological drought impacted the current agricultural drought. A time series regression model strengthens the results, which show a causal relationship between NDVI and SPEI lag. According to the NDVI-SPEI-1 lag 4 time series model, NDVI was influenced by NDVI in the previous 12 periods, and SPEI-1 in the last four periods had a determinant coefficient value of 0.4. This shows that the causal model between SPEI-1 and NDVI shows a fairly strong relationship for drought management in agricultural areas (irrigated areas) and is considered a reliable and effective tool in determining the severity and duration of drought in the study area.

The catchment area of Oued Larbaâ is located in the eastern prerif at the very eastern end of the large Innaouene basin, a stream of Oued Sebou [Lahrach. A et al., 1994]. The objective of the study was to establish a quality comparison of the watershed during the dry and wet seasons. Eight water and sediment samples were taken during the two seasons, all along the main channel of the Larbaa river, taking into account anthropogenic activities and the areas of confluence with its tributaries: Tarmasst, Taza, Larouireg, Defali and Jaouna. The physicochemical parameters (pH, EC, TDS, nitrates, sulfates, chlorides), as well as metal contamination (Al, Zn, Ni, Pb, Ag, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mg, Mn) were studied in summer. The results revealed the alkaline pH higher than 7, a significant electrical conductivity in several stations, but still conforming to the Moroccan standards. Laboratory analyses reflect that the waters of the basin have generally good quality, except for a few peaks that indicate metallic contamination in Fe and Al. In order to better assess whether there is an anthropogenic effect influencing these results, and to remove the relationships between the different parameters studied, a statistical analysis was carried out with the PCA tool. This analysis made it possible to indicate Cr, Ni and Al as indices of pollution in certain areas. Although the results obtained have been tolerant until now, it is necessary to put in place an action plan to control the areas at risk of contamination during the years.

This paper examines the depositional environment and diagenetic aspects of the exposed Patcham and Chari formation within the Habo Dome. The Patcham Formation is represented by the Black Limestone Member. The Chari Formation is represented by two distinct sedimentary successions: (i) shale and carbonates, and (ii) coarse clastics. The paper describes eleven lithofacies from these successions. The depositional framework constituents of these facies have been greatly modified by diagenetic evolution through time. Two main depositional environments, i.e. foreshore intertidal and shoreface (subtidal), have dominated during their deposition. The diagenetic signatures observed within these sediments suggest early or syndepositional changes in marine phreatic and burial environments. Two phases of early mechanical compaction have largely governed porosity evolution within the limestone facies. Micritization of the allochems was caused by endolithic algae prevalent within the restricted lagoon environments with stagnant marine phreatic zone conditions. Random dissolution of microcrystalline grains has created vugs with patchy distribution reflecting neomorphism within the meteoric vadose zone. The types of cements within the sandstone facies include silica, calcite, and its replacement by Fe-calcite cement. The sandstones were deposited in a relatively low energy environment below storm wave base. The depositional conditions have controlled the early diagenesis of the sandstones which in turn have influenced their burial diagenesis.

The area which transcends the Precambrian basement complex onto the Sokoto sector of the Iullemmeden basin in northwestern Nigeria presents a unique prospect for geothermal exploration research in the absence of regional heat production data, despite its tectonic history and depositional characteristics. In this study, geophysical exploration employing radiometric technique was adopted to classify the petrologic units within the fringes of the Iullemmeden basin and the adjoining crystalline basement complex so as to estimate the radiogenic heat potential within the terrain that may support geothermal considerations. Airborne radiometric measurements acquired over the area were digitized and processed to obtain radioelement concentration maps and the K/Th/U ternary map. Results show that the ranges of measured concentrations of 40K, 238U and 232Th are 4.6 to 18.9%, 0.7 to 4.9 ppm and 4.6 to 18.9 ppm respectively. Radiogenic heat estimation derived from radioelement data within eight petrologic units comprising quaternary sediments, schist, carbonates, shale/clay, younger granites, older granites, gneissic rock and migmatite showed that the lowest radiogenic heat production estimates ranging from 0.27–0.66 µW∙m−3 were recorded in the sedimentary terrain within the quaternary sediments while the highest radiogenic heat production values of between 2.04 to 2.34 µW∙m−3 were recorded in the basement complex within gneissic rocks. The spatial distribution of radiogenic heat in the area showed an increased heat gradient within the basement complex and a diminishing heat gradient over the Iullemmeded basin.

Opis:
When designing dam spillway structures, the most significant consideration is the energy dissipation arrangements. Different varieties of baffle blocks and stilling basins have been used in this context. However, the hydraulic jump form of stilling basin is considered to be the most suitable. The main objective of this research was to introduce four different baffle block shapes (models arranged from A to D, installed at slopes 0.00, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08 in the stilling basins). To illustrate the consequences for the qualities of pressure-driven bounce, each model was attempted in the bowl. The trials applied Froude numbers between 6.5 and 9.2. The puzzle square model D provided the best outcomes compared to the models A, B, C and smooth. Model D with different models at inclines 0.00, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08 was used to consider the impacts of perplex hinders on water driven-bounce when bed slants were changed. When the model D baffle used instead of a smooth bed at 0.08 slope, the reduction in y2 / y1 reached 12.8%, and Lj / y1 was 18.9%. Among the different bed slopes, a normal decrease in y2 / y1 ranged from approximately 10.3%, whereas the normal decrease in Lj / y1 was about 13.8% when the model D baffle was used instead of the model A baffle with a horizontal slope bed of 0.00. The results show that the new shapes led to a decrease in sequent profundity proportion and length of jump proportion; however, the energy dissipation proportion increased.

Opis:
Late Holocene deposits containing abundant and well-preserved malacofauna were exposed within the Spa Park in Busko-Zdrój. Molluscan shells were found in sand, dark muds and calcareous muds. Dark and calcareous muds are intercalated by fine-grained sand and peat devoid of malacofauna. Ali these deposits were accumulated on swampy, flat bottom of wide river valley. The result of radiocarbon dating has shown that the formation of the deposits started in the upper part of the Subboreal Phase. Numerous Late Medieval portery shards were found in several topmost profile sections. The identified malacofauna suggests that similar climatic and habitat conditions prevailed throughout the entire sedimentation period. Snails typical of open habitats, accompanied by hygrophilous taxa, play a dominant role. Mesophilous and aquatic taxa occur in accessory proportions, while shadow-loving forms are virtually absent.

The lithological and malacological studies covered sediments forming the low terrace of the Rogoźnik Stream in the northwest part of the Podhale Basin. This terrace is characterised by a uniform structure within a significant part of the valley. Three layers of gravel and four layers of sandy and silty muds were found there. A rich and diversified malacofauna was discovered in fine-grained sediments. Its analysis allowed us to characterise environmental conditions during sediment deposition. The age of the individual components of the sedimentary sequence was determined by radiocarbon dating. A distinct change was found in the upper intervals of the sequence, corresponding to the warm phase of the Medieval Climate Optimum. This period is associated with the robust development of agriculture, and processes related to human activities became the main factor shaping the environment, influencing the course of geological processes, and changing the taxonomical and ecological structure of the fauna and flora assemblages found in this area.

A detailed malacological analysis was made of sediments associated with a small landslide which had developed on the north-eastern slope of Majerz Hill near Niedzica (Inner Carpathians, Southern Poland). The age of the development and environmental changes associated with particular phases of the landslide was determined by means of radiocarbon dating. The analyses made it possible to distinguish two periods of landslide activation falling on the turn of the Early/Middle Holocene and on the Late Holocene (probably on the Iron Age Cold Period). These phases are closely related to periods of increased mass movements, both of landslides and debris flows in other European mountains, stages of glacial advance in the Alps, periods of increased fluvial activity in rivers and elevated water levels in European lakes. The molluscan assemblages also enabled the reconstruction of environmental conditions before the landslide formation, during periods of dormancy, and after the end of its activity.
