Opis:
Suppose that P is a finite 2-polyhedron. We prove that there exists a PL surjective map f:Q → P from a fake surface Q with preimages of f either points or arcs or 2-disks. This yields a reduction of the Whitehead asphericity conjecture (which asserts that every subpolyhedron of an aspherical 2-polyhedron is also aspherical) to the case of fake surfaces. Moreover, if the set of points of P having a neighbourhood homeomorphic to the 2-disk is a disjoint union of open 2-disks, and every point of P has an arbitrarily small 2-dimensional neighbourhood, then we may additionally conclude that Q is a special 2-polyhedron.

Opis:
W pracy podjęto próbę wykorzystania owoców banana o daleko posuniętej dojrzałości konsumpcyjnej do otrzymywania mrożonych deserów. Spośród 6. różnych prób poddanych moczeniu tylko próba, w której do syropu dodawano 0,8% kwasu cytrynowego, 0,2% kwasu L-askorbinowego i 1% chlorku wapnia gwarantowała otrzymanie mrożonek o jakości sensorycznej zbliżonej do oceny dobrej.
It was attempted to utilize banana fruit of far-advanced consumption ripeness for the preparation of frozen desserts. Bananas cut in slices were subjected to the preliminary treatment of blanching in 30% sugar syrup acidified with citric acid or soaking during 24 h in 50% acidified sugar syrup with different additives such as L-ascorbic acid, sodium bisulphite and calcium chloride. The aim of the treatment was to stabilize colour, remove gaseous substances, and if possible harden the fruit. The level of dry matter, sugars, acids, protopectins, pectins, polyphenols, vitamin C, calcium, SO2, and the activity of peroxidase were determined in the raw material, prepared slices, and in the product after 6 months of frozen storage. Sensorial analysis of the products showed that the blanching did not ensure a good quality of frozen desserts. Of 6 different samples subjected to soaking only that in syrup enriched with 0.8% citric acid, 0.2% L-ascorbic acid, and 1% calcium chloride ensured the preparation of frozen products whose sensorial quality approximated to a good grade.

Pathogenicity of Musicillium theobromae (Turconi) Zare & W. Gams (syn. Stachylidium theobromae Turconi, Verticillium theobromae E.W. Mason & S. Hughes) causing Banana cigar end rot disease has fulfilled Koch’s Postulates for the first time. To assess and prove the pathogenicity, M. theobromae mycelial discs and conidia were inoculated in triplicate to surface-disinfested green banana fruits. The bananas were infected both through artificial wounds as well as through intact unwounded fruits. After inoculation, the bananas were covered with moist cotton and incubated for 30 days at 23°C. Plain moist cotton was used on the controls. Those inoculated treatments kept under high relative humidity exhibited symptoms of banana cigar end rot disease. The controls and those kept under low relative humidity did not develop symptoms and remained healthy. The results indicated that both optimum temperature and high relative humidity are necessary for infection onset and disease development. It was also determined that infection can occur both through wounds and intact unwounded fruit epidermis. The cultural characteristics in M. theobromae were also investigated. It was found that the best mycelial growth occurred on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and the optimum pH for mycelial growth was 8.

This article presents a quality analysis of convectively dried fruits and vegetables with preliminary osmotic dehydration. Tests were carried out on banana fruit and red beetroot samples. Hypertonic solutions of fructose for the banana and those of sucrose for the red beetroot were used, each one at three different concentrations. After osmotic dewatering treatment conducted at different time intervals and after osmotic dehydration the samples were dried convectively until an equilibrium with the surroundings was attained. Osmotic dehydration and convective drying curves were determined. The values of Solids Gain (SG), Water Loss (WL) and Weight Reduction (WR) were measured and changes in the samples’ colour and shape after convective drying with and without osmotic pretreatment were assessed.

Opis:
Flame retardancy was imparted in cellulosic cotton textile using banana pseudostem sap (BPS), an eco-friendly natural product. The extracted sap was made alkaline and applied in pre-mordanted bleached and mercerized cotton fabrics. Flame retardant properties of both the control and the treated fabrics were analysed in terms of limiting oxygen index (LOI), horizontal and vertical flammability. Fabrics treated with the non-diluted BPS were found to have good flame retardant property with LOI of 30 compared to the control fabric with LOI of 18, i.e., an increase of 1.6 times. In the vertical flammability test, the BPS treated fabric showed flame for a few seconds and then, got extinguished. In the horizontal flammability test, the treated fabric showed no flame, but was burning only with an afterglow with a propagation rate of 7.5 mm/min, which was almost 10 times lower than that noted with the control fabric. The thermal degradation and the pyrolysis of the fabric samples were studied using a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the chemical composition by FTIR, SEM and EDX, besides the pure BPS being characterized by EDX and mass spectroscopy. The fabric after the treatment was found to produce stable natural khaki colour, and there was no significant degradation in mechanical strengths. Based on the results, the mechanism of imparting flame retardancy to cellulosic textile and the formation of natural colour on it using the proposed BPS treatment have been postulated.

Opis:
The effects of climate change on agriculture may have strong impacts on the world’s food economy and are likely to threaten both the welfare of the world’s population and the economic development of the global society. Hence, the impacts of changes in important climate variables like temperature, rainfall and relative humidity on the production of a major food commodity called banana is investigated using the data obtained within 1998-2012 from Ondo State, Nigeria. The results suggest that excessive rainfall and extremely high temperature can reduce banana productivity while the production is also small when both rainfall and temperature are very low with poor humidity. On the average, the findings show that a mean temperature of about 26 °C and average rainfall of around 1891mm with relative humidity of approximately 77% will lead to good annual banana production above 61,000 tons in Ondo State. Since these climate variables will fluctuate under a future climate change condition, the coping strategies recommended for farmers in the area and in similar places might include planting of drought- and disease resistant banana types, monitoring of weather conditions, use of irrigation and chemicals. Improved storage facilities are also important while transportation of banana should be done under controlled conditions to avoid spoiling the quality.

Three novel and distinct agricultural waste materials, viz., Casuarinas fruit powder (CFP), sorghum stem powder (SSP) and banana stem powder (BSP) were used as low cost adsorbents for the removal of toxic copper(II) from aqueous solutions. Acid treated adsorbents were characterized by SEM, EDX and FTIR. Different factors effecting adsorption capacity were analyzed and the efficiency order was BSP>SSP>CFP. Based on the extent of compatibility to Freundlich/Langmuir/D-R/Temkin adsorption isotherm and different models (pseudo-first and second order, Boyd, Weber’s and Elovich), chemisorption primarily involved in the case of CFP and SSP, whereas, simultaneous occurrence of chemisorption and physisorption was proposed in the case of BSP. Based on the observations, it was proposed that three kinetic stages involve in adsorption process viz., diffusion of sorbate to sorbent, intra particle diffusion and then establishment of equilibrium. These adsorbents have promising role towards removal of Cu(II) from industrial wastewater to contribute environmental protection.

This article is devoted to analysing and interpretating various images of postmodern philistine. Author focuses on two different types of townspeople. First presents careerists who live in big cities; they dream about fullfilling their American Dream, sometimes forgetting about moral rules which are important in postmodern reality. They not only cheat, but also betray their fiancées. Careerists easily lose their money, spending on parties, alcohol and other different addictions. They are interested in taking part in modern reality contrary to bigots, who criticise contemporary world. Bigots do not understand modern society; they associate different patterns of life with evil that destroy not only country, but also the whole patriarchal world. These two images of postmodern philistine are similar to those which appeared in the end of the 19th century.

Opis:
This study was executed to investigate the potential of agar-agar, a nontoxic and non-degradable gelling agent, as a promising coating agent to improve and protect banana fruit against fungal postharvest diseases i.e., crown, finger, neck and flower end rots which are caused by fungal isolates of Colletotrichum musae and Fusarium moniliforme. Coated-banana fruit samples with different concentrations of agar-agar suspension particularly at 2.0 g · l−1 exhibited a significant reduction in incidence and severity of postharvest diseases compared to untreated fruit. Banana fruits dipped in agar suspension at 2.0 g · l−1 for 5, 10 and 15 min showed significant reduction in disease incidence and severity. Moreover, application of agar suspension as a coating agent at 2.0 g · l−1 significantly decreased weight loss (%), firmness loss (%), and soluble solid concentration of banana fruit for 15 days at 25 ± 2°C. Scanning electron microscopy observation confirmed that the fruit coated with agar colloid at 2.0 g · l−1 had significantly fewer cracks and showed smoother surfaces than untreated fruit. This explains the quality improvement in agar-coated fruit compared to uncoated fruit. Overall, agar colloid, a safe coating agent, could be used to protect banana fruit against postharvest rot diseases and extend fruit storage life during ripening and storage.

Opis:
The natsukashisa (nostalgia) is a common key to interpretation of novels written by the Japanese author Yoshimoto Banana. Considered as the desire for a replay of life, nostalgia is evaluated as a solution for the sensation of emptiness and solitude attributed to modern life; a gap that can be bridged by memory, recollection and flash-backs of the protagonists in Yoshimoto’s novels. As a representation for something gone, the objects of this nostalgic feeling assume different forms in Yoshimoto’s works: a faraway house, a lost person, a feeling perceived and then missed; dreams, hallucinations, images and paintings: everything is transformed by the author in a vehicle to allow the reader to sympathize with the protagonists and share the same nostalgic feeling. Author’s attempt is to encourage the young readers to keep on seeking the lost self in the past in order to not betray one’s identity. This is the main topic one can also recognise in her novel called Sweet Hereafter, a publication in which nostalgia for a self lost in a car accident is compared to the one felt by the hisaisha of Tōhoku region who lost everything after the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on 11th March 2011. Here Yoshimoto suggests natsukashisa as the possible way to overcome the traumatic experience of witnessing Japanese Daishinsai. This brief investigation proposes a literary case study that highlights the relation between trauma and memory, with a particular focus on nostalgia considered as a positive means for overcoming traumatic experience.

Opis:
Natural fibrous materials have been studied to address noise and high heat indices, but many of the existing studies about natural fibers do not sufficiently support their claims of better acoustical and heat insulating materials. Thus, this study investigated the surface morphology of easily available agricultural materials such as coconut husks, banana pseudostem and sugarcane husk for their potential as sound absorbers and thermal insulators. Fiber pads from the materials were constructed and analyzed for noise reduction coefficients, thermal insulating performance, water absorbing capacity and flame tolerance - using the methods specified in the American Society for Testing Materials. Herein, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied for analytical imaging of the agricultural materials. Noise reduction coefficients (0.80 dB and 0.92 dB), (0.75d B and 0.78 dB) and (0.50 dB and 0.35 dB) each at 800 Hz and 440 Hz, and heat reductions of 2.56 °C, 1.71 °C, and 1.24 °C were obtained from coconut husk, sugarcane husk and banana pseudostem, respectively. The coconut husk also gave the highest water absorbing capacity and high flame tolerance of 56%, compared to that of sugarcane husk (49%) and banana pseudostem (32.67%). The morphology of the coconut husk, after SEM application revealed more diverse microporous cells with varying shapes and sizes compared to that of sugarcane husk and banana pseudostem. Thus, results indicate that porosity affects the noise and heat reduction indices of the fibers. The more porous the material is, the better its potential as sound absorber and thermal insulator.

The purpose of this study was to use statistical techniques to characterise bio-composites made from sisal fibres and bio-resin from raw banana peel. The fibres were treated with sodium hydroxide, combined with a bio-resin made from banana peel, and then a bio-composite material was developed. The effect of the fibre volume fraction, glycerine and bio-resin mass on the bio-composite’s tensile and compressive properties was investigated using universal rotatable design and multiple regression. The paired T-test conducted exhibited a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the treated fibres. Sisal bio-composite showed a tensile strength of 5.2 MPa with an adjusted R2 value of 0.91, Young’s modulus of 11.99 MPa (adjusted R2 of 0.92), percentage elongation of 1.77% (adjusted R2 of 0.95), and compressive strength of 2.94 MPa (adjusted R2 of 0.90). The bio-composite could becompared to a commercial composite and solid wood boards, and hence it is an alternative to non-renewable, non-biodegradable petroleum and solid wood products for partition, ceiling and notice board applications.
Celem pracy było wykorzystanie technik statystycznych do charakteryzowania biokompozytów wykonanych z włókien sizalowych i biożywicy z surowej skórki banana. Zbadano wpływ frakcji objętościowej włókna, gliceryny i masy biożywicy na właściwości rozciągające i ściskające biokompozytów, wykorzystując uniwersalną konstrukcję obrotową i wielokrotną regresję.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of substituting sugar in crust pastry with natural substitutes, such as stevia, xylitol, coconut sugar as well as dried banana. Furthermore, a comparison of physicochemical properties was carried out. The crust pastry obtained was analyzed in terms of color by CIEL*a*b*, textures, water activity, bake loss, semi-consumer assessments and the nutritional value was calculated. There was a clear impact caused by the sugar substitute on the physicochemical properties and their sensory assessment. The cakes with xylitol had the closest color, smell and taste to the control sample (with sucrose). The cakes with dried banana had a significantly reduced hardness compared to the control sample. The lowest bake loss was observed in the case of pastry with dried banana, while the highest was in the case of xylitol. In sensory analysis, the “Just-about-right” method was used, and pastries with a sweeter taste were more desirable (xylitol) and pastry with the stevia substitute showed the lowest desirability. The lowest energy value per 100 g was obtained for stevia (392 kcal/ 100g), while for xylitol energy, the value was reduced by 6%.

This paper presents the stress-strain behaviour of Natural Banana microfibre reinforced Lightweight Concrete (LWC) prisms under axial compression. The compressive strength of masonry is obtained by testing stack bonded prisms under compression normal to its bed joint. LWC blocks of cross-sectional dimensions 200 mm x 150 mm were used to construct the prism with an overall height of 630 mm. Three series of specimens were cast; (a) prism without Banana fibre (control), (b) prism with Banana microfibres, (c) prism with Banana microfibres sandwiched with Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets. Natural Banana fibres were used as structural fibre reinforcement at different volume fractions (VF). The results indicate that the presence of fibres helps to improve the strength, stiffness, and ductility of LWC stack bonded prisms under compression. The test results also indicate that banana fibre reinforcement provides an improved crack bridging mechanism at both micro and macro levels. The GFRP sandwiched prism specimens exhibited excellent ductility and load-carrying capacity resulting from improved plastic deformation tolerance under compression and bonding between the LWC block and GFRP sheet.
