Opis:
A review of morphological and morphodynamic studies of the coast of the Kaliningrad oblast has been carried out for half a century. The studies include monitoring measurements by the Atlantic Branch of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (AB IO RAS) with the participation of the state institute Baltberegozashchita (BBZ), as well as pre-war studies and cartographic analyses of long-term coastline migration carried out by the private company Baltic Aerogeodetic Enterprise (BaltAGE). It shows the spatial alternation of abrasive and accumulative areas, as well as frequent changes in beach width and height within the same morphological coast type. A change in the development trend of particular coast sections from year to year was noted. The significant influence of anthropogenic factors on the coastal development was emphasized, including changes in the direction of coastal retreat/advance along an extensive coastal stretch. Comparison of the interannual and nearly century-old dynamics of the coast revealed noticeable differences between them, with opposite trends in several large-scale coast sections.

Opis:
The main aim of the paper is to present general information about hydro-meteorological conditions in the catchment of the Łebsko Lake. In the first part of the article a short description of the most important hydrographic elements of the investigated area (the Łebsko Lake, the Łeba River and its tributaries) was provided. The climatic analysis of local conditions, besides the characteristics of the air temperature and precipitation, contains the distribution of other principal meteorological elements (pressure, wind, cloud cover or relative humidity). The paper is a part of broader studies aimed at finding the key factors determining seasonal and annual changes of water relations in the catchment of the Łebsko Lake.
Opracowanie stanowi część projektu, którego celem jest analiza zmian stosunków wodnych w zlewni jeziora Łebsko. W artykule przedstawiono ogólną charakterystykę warunków klimatycznych i hydrograficznych zlewni jeziora Łebsko. Charakterystyka hydrologiczna obejmuje opis najważniejszych elementów sieci wodnej analizowanego obszaru: jeziora Łebsko wraz z zasilającymi je ciekami oraz rzeki Łeby jako głównego źródła zasilania jeziora. Opis warunków klimatycznych oprócz podstawowych charakterystyk termicznych i opadowych zawiera również analizę rozkładu wielu innych elementów meteorologicznych: wiatru, ciśnienia, zachmurzenia oraz wilgotności względnej. Bardziej szczegółowych pomiarów wymaga natomiast analiza bezpośrednich i pośrednich skutków hydrologicznych w czasie gwałtownych zmian wybranych elementów meteorologicznych (np. spiętrzenia wody przy silnych wiatrach z jednego kierunku). Wnikliwej analizie poddane zostały warunki pogodowe sprzyjające występowaniu skrajnie niskich i wysokich stanów wody w obrębie zlewni jeziora Łebsko.

Opis:
This study is an attempt to provide a comprehensive and synthetic characterisation of Słupsk climate based on a homogeneous series of daily measurements covering the longest possible period. Apart from the temperature and precipitation profiles derived from a 58-year examination record (1950-2007), the climate analysis also presents the distribution of other key weather components (atmospheric pressure, wind, relative humidity and cloud cover) in a shorter (1991-2007) time-span. The paper, which is a summary of the existing research into Słupsk climate, is directed not only at geographers (for whom it may be a significant reference in research concerning weather conditions in other Polish towns), but also at local residents and tourists, who choose Słupsk as their holiday destination.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify the potential for the use of probability density functions (PDF) in modeling of near-surface wind speed. The approaches of Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are used in combination with 2-parametric Weibull distribution. The downscaling model was built using a diagnosed relationship between sea level pressure (SLP) patterns over Europe and the Northern Atlantic and estimated monthly values of Weibull parameters at 9 stations along the Polish Baltic Coast. The obtained scale (A) and shape (k) parameters make it possible to describe temporal variations of wind fields and their theoretical probability values. This may have further application in the modeling of extreme wind speeds for seasonal forecasting, climate prediction or in historical reconstructions. The model evaluation was done separately for the calibration (1971-2000) and validation periods (2001-2010). The scale parameter was reconstructed reasonably, while there were some problematic issues with the shape parameter, especially in the validation period. The quality of the developed models is generally higher for the winter season, due to larger SLP gradients, whereas the results for the spring and summer seasons were less satisfactory. Despite this, the 99th percentile of theoretical wind speeds are in most cases satisfactory, due to the lesser importance of the shape parameter for typical distributions in the analyzed region.

Opis:
Monitoring of cliff cross profile changes in the Ustka area have been carried out by the authors for more than 8 years. The aim of the project has been to verify the validity of the model suggested by different authors before, who described patterns of cliff development in the area. For example, certain observations on the South Baltic cliffs have led to the preliminary conclusion that the role played by geological conditions and related hydrogeological features in differentiating rates of cliff evolution is more important than assumed so far. The measurements in the controlled cliff profiles have yielded the following results: – beaches are the most dynamic areas in the onshore part. They undergo periodical changes, accreting from spring to summer and being eroded in autumn and winter; – upper sections of the cliffs, typically built of aeolian sand, are least resistant. Hence, they are subject to mass movement, particularly in summer, under impact of vacationers. As a consequence, sandy taluses and aprons form in the depositional area near the cliff base; – toes of landslide tongues in Poddąbie and Dębina are now being progressively abraded. The slide in Dębina was reactivated during winter seasons 2005/2006 and 2006/2007, causing further enlargement of the landslide niche; – after extreme storms beach accretion takes place in coastal sections located eastward from the most abraded cliffs, e.g. between Rowy and Czołpino, east from the landslide-affected areas at Poddąbie and Dębina. In the 2005–2007 period a significant increase in beach width has been observed. Nevertheless, it is difficult to offer serious conclusions at this stage, particularly because a series of big storms has not occurred recently. Detailed measurements described in this paper will be supplemented by detailed analysis of the geological structure of cliffs and of geomorphology and geology in offshore area.

Opis:
Morphology of sea bottom of the Władysławowo area, from Karwia to Chałupy, has been studied based on the detailed digital bathymetric map prepared in a scale of 1:25 000 with isobaths every 0.25 m. A significant differentiation of the bottom relief has been observed, with the level changes up to 1-3 metres, mostly connected with the occurrence of specific systems of ridges and runnels. They are probably partly relict forms (fluvial and/or coastal?), changed to certain degree during the rapid stage of the Litorina transgression, and in partly forms created by the recent waves. Several types of the sea bottom surface, differing in pattern of morphological forms, have been recognised within inshore, near shore, and open sea (above 16 m depths) areas. The full knowledge of the origin and development of these relief forms requires further specialised research, currently carried out. Nonetheless, the already obtained picture of the sea bottom relief indicates an intensified abrasion of the offshore sea bottom, and an intensive, irreversible sweeping out of the sediments from the shore to the open sea, most probably by rip currents, at a distance up to several kilometres from the shore. It is in accordance with the results of a former large-scale (1:500) study of the sea bottom at the test field at Chłapowo, performed with the use of an integrated system of non-invasive and direct methods.

Opis:
During the construction of mathematical models for mapping hydrogeological conditions it is necessary to apply simplifications, both in the geological structure and in hydrogeological parameters used. The present note discusses problems surrounding the mapping of glaciotectonic disturbances that occur in the northern part of Wolin Island (northwest Poland). For this part of the island, a direct outflow of groundwater towards the Baltic Sea basin has been determined on the basis of geophysical survey results. An important feature in the hydrogeological conditions here is the isolation of groundwater from both the Baltic Sea and Szczecin Lagoon by clay with a Cretaceous xenolith. Such a geological structure explains the presence of perched water at considerable heights in zones close to the cliffs, without any significant hydraulic connection with surrounding reservoirs. Hydrogeological conditions of Wolin Island have been modelled using the Visual MODFLOW package v.4.2. In the vertical section, these conditions can be simplified to one aquifer (Pleistocene-Holocene), in which two aquifers can be distinguished. In a large part of the island, these remain in mutual hydraulic contact: layer I – upper, with an unconfined aquifer, and layer II – lower, with a confined aquifer, locally an unconfined one. The schematisation of hydrogeological conditions adopted here has allowed to reproduce present groundwater dynamics in the study area.

Pudagla lowland is a Holocene barrier spit on the SW Baltic coast. Framed and underlain by Pleistocene deposits, the depression is filled up with up to 20 m of Late Glacial to Holocene sediments. 63 cores were collected using a vibrocore technique. Samples were analysed in terms of granulometry, species associations (molluscs, ostracods). Organic sediments (peat) were used for radiocarbon dating. In total 6 new 14C-data are presented. The sediment sequence starts with a Late Glacial till, overlain by glaciofluvial sand. A lake developed during the Late Preboreal/Early Boreal with a water level of -8 m mean sea level (m.s.l.) with sand the predominant sediment. Minor lakes existed during the Boreal. At around 6500 BP the Littorina transgression reached the study area. Mud and fine to medium sand were deposited forming a barrier spit. At around 1000 BP, the entire Pudagla lowland became terrestrial with peat as the most common surface sediment. Palaeogeographical development is demonstrated by nine evolutionary stages. The assumption of Kliewe, Janke (1982) that the transgression onset varies regionally at the coast of the southern Baltic Sea can be proven by comparison with other areas which have been subject to prior investigations.

Opis:
The purpose of the presented article is to indicate to what an extent and how the most opinion-forming dailies and weeklies in Germany reported events taking place on the Polish coast in December 1970. The workers’ revolt, which ended with a bloody suppression by the army and militia, took place only a week after the agreement between the People’s Republic of Poland and West Germany had been concluded. Analyzing this issue, research questions can be asked, both about the number and size of articles as well as their nature. Were they predominantly accounts of the course of events or were commentaries also popular? Was, and if so, to what an extent social unrest in the People’s Republic of Poland and the removal of Władysław Gomułka from power perceived as a threat to the just initiated process of rapprochement on the Warsaw–Bonn line? To what an extent did the publications in dailies and weeklies differ from each other? Finally, the question is whether the press appearing in the Federal Republic of Germany published information on reactions of the public of this country, acts of solidarity, or voices of condemnation addressed to the authorities in Warsaw? The study undertook a critical analysis of texts describing the events of December 1970, establishing the chronology of these events. This analysis was also comparative in nature, as the content of the articles was compared with the former researchers’ findings on the course of individual days of the December tragedy. No less important for this text was the linguistic analysis, aimed at indicating to what an extent reports and columns regarding the situation in Poland were emotionally loaded, and to what an extent they constituted substantive, emotionless political analyzes. The next research method used in the presented research was the quantitative method. Its application made it possible to determine the number of articles referring to events in Poland and to indicate specific days when they had appeared in individual dailies and weeklies. The results of the query and analysis of press articles indicate that, despite the information blockade, journalists managed to map, with a high degree of vagueness, the real course of workers’ protests, especially their causes and the actions of the authorities leading to the brutal suppression. From the point of view of the West German editors, reports obtained from journalists from Scandinavia who had managed to get to Szczecin and Słupsk played a significant role here. In this way, the descriptions of events from both cities quickly obscured the dramatic situation in Gdańsk and Gdynia, including the symbol of December 1970 – an episode related to the death of Zbyszek Godlewski (“Janek Wiśniewski”), which hardly appeared in the media in Germany. A separate research problem to which special attention should be paid are the numerous social and economic analyzes of the situation in Poland published in West German press in December 1970. They pointed to the economic premises as the main reasons for the outbreak of protests, while criticizing the policy of Gomułka, which had led Poland to the economic stagnation. A similar position was taken by the government of Chancellor Willy Brandt, who at first took an expectant attitude, and then, through the words of the government’s spokesman Conrad Ahlers, drew attention to the chronic economic problems of the so-called Eastern Bloc. Despite some anxiety, journalists calmly accepted events in Poland, especially the removal of Gomułka from power and him being replaced by Edward Gierek. It was anticipated that the new Polish leader would continue the policy of rapprochement with Germany, and more broadly with the West.
