energy security of Baltic states
Opis:
The following paper treats about the initiatives of Baltic Ring and the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP). Their main purpose is to integrate the electric grid in the states located at the Baltic coast and to eliminate barriers in transmission of electricity between them. This goal is notably difficult to achieve because of three different systems of grid functioning in the Baltic region - the Nordel system connecting Norway, Sweden and Finland, the IPS/UPS system common for all the post-soviet countries including Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and the European system used by most countries of European Union. While the Baltic Ring at the moment of its creation was meant to be a plane for cooperation around the coastline of Baltic Sea, its noble objectives did not survive in the XXI century. The new incarnation of Baltic Ring, called Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan, does not even declare any will to cooperate with Russia nor Belarus. Its far-reaching goal is to desynchronize the electric grid of Baltic states with the IPS/UPS system and to connect tchem with the continental Europe. This plan is strongly supported by European Union and criticized by Russia. The main purpose of the following paper is to define the role of the European Union’s energy policy in relations between Russia and the Baltic states. The European strategy for limiting Russia’s influence is clearly visible in the area of electricity transmission. The Baltic states remain the most sensitive EU countries affected by that kind of influence, so that the BEMIP plan is focused mainly on enhancing their energy security.

Opis:
Baltic integration studies, though dispersed and involving researchers of various disciplines, generally fit well in the field of economic geography research. This article attempts to review the study results of research conducted in Poland in the last four decades. It identifies eleven leading issues, including: the Baltic wide cooperation (conditions and factors, progress and collaboration perspectives), the development of the maritime economy, international legislation, environmental protection, spatial planning and cross-border cooperation. The research focus evolved reflecting the major milestones in geopolitical transformations. In Baltic Europe we can identify three evolutionary phases: identification of cooperation paths and conditions in the competitive environment of two political and military blocks, a recast of options in the period of political transformation and European integration, studies of EU enlargement consequences.

Atlas of the Baltic Languages
Opis:
Atlas of the Baltic Languages: Plant Names of Slavonic OriginThe article investigates Slavonic-derived plant names in dialects of the two surviving Baltic languages – Latvian and Lithuanian. Historically, these Slavonisms were originally adopted by small-scale regional dialects, which are now disappearing. In 2009, a pilot study for the Atlas of the Baltic Languages was published. It comprised 12 geo-linguistic maps with Latvian, Lithuanian and English commentaries. 2012 saw the publication, in CD format, of the Atlas’s first volume: Lexis 1: Flora. The material analysed concerns names for: (1) wild plants, e.g., cornflower, nettle, waybread, milfoil, dandelion, plantain; (2) cultivated plants, e.g., onion, potatoe, garlic, cucumber, Swedish turnip, [winter] wheat; (3) trees (juniper, hazel-tree, pear-tree, plum-tree, cherry-tree, etc.) and words related to a tree (top of the tree, cone, etc.).Borrowed plant names can generally be grouped as follows: 1. Common borrowings located in a wide area in Lithuania and used all over Eastern part of Latvia – the region of Latgale. These usually denote fruits and vegetables, e.g. the potatoe (Solanum tuberosum) – Latv. buļve and its variants, buļba and variants, uļbiks / Lith. bulvė and variants, bulbė and variants; or garlic – casnags, casnāgs and variants / Lith. česnākas, šešnākas and variants. 2. Common borrowings located in wide area in Lithuania and used in some subdialects in Latgale, e.g. Lith. vosilka / Lat. Vasilka ‘cornflower (Centaurea cyanus)’; Lith. kriváunykas and variants / Lat. kravavņiks and variants ‘yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.)’. 3. Slavonisms whose origin differs in Latvian and in Lithuanian, e.g. Lat. klevers (< Russ. клевер, Bel. dialectal клéвер, клевiр / Lith. kaniušina < Bel. канюшына, Pol. koniczyna for ‘clover (Trifolium)’.The Atlas of the Baltic Languages, reflecting the language contacts, could be an important source for further investigation not only in Baltistics but also in Slavistics and Indo-European comparative linguistics.

Latvian is the only Baltic language that presents a suppletive variation between a positive and a comparative: adverb daudz ‘much’ / vairs or vairak ‘more’. The question arises whether this composite paradigm is an innovative feature of the Latvian language or could be traced back to Proto-Baltic, and any answer to this question is strongly dependent on how we explain the origin of the Latvian comparative vairs, vairak. The aim of this paper is to propose a new etymology for vairs and to shed some light on the prehistory of this suppletive variation that appears to be unique in the Baltic languages.

Opis:
This study discusses the occurrence of neoplasia in the Baltic clam Macoma balthica from the Gulf of Gdańsk in recent years and investigates potential relationships between toxic compounds in the environment and the presence of the cancer. The disease was identified at four sampling stations during 1999–2002. Comparison with previous results highlighted the substantial prevalence of the tumour between 1998 and 2002. The prevalence of the cancer was strongly dependent on the sampling location (p < 0.001): it was highest at sampling point H45 (the deepest part of the gulf) and lowest at station PB30 (central part of the gulf). Monthly studies showed a trend towards an increasing prevalence of neoplasia during the warm months. However, over several sampling months no strong statistical correlation between the prevalence of the disease and the sampling time was found. The results of the study suggest that several environmental factors may promote the progress of the cancer in M. balthica from the Gulf of Gdańsk: it is most probably an indirect effect of pollution, although causality cannot be proven at this stage. Seriously polluted and exhibiting a considerable asymmetry of contamination, the ecosystem of the gulf provides an ideal environment for testing potential cause-effect relationships between pollutants and their biological effects.

It is generally agreed that fine structure and microstructure are usually beyond the resolution of numerical models. Nevertheless, corresponding processes have a considerable influence on water dynamics and exchanges in the Baltic Sea. Measurements of fine structure were carried out with the scanning CTD probe. Microstructure measurements were performed by towing a system with fast-response velocity, conductivity, and temperature sensors. Bottom turbulence was investigated with the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Domains of high mixing and stining activity were revealed by means of high-resolution profiling on temperature and salinity transects. These domains were found near inhomogeneities of bottom relief such as the Słupsk Sill, the bottom elevation on eastern boundary of the Słupsk Furrow and in areas of ray concentration of quasi-inertial internal waves. Data on transects with manifestations of convection provide an evidence of the non-uniform distribution of turbulence in the upper layer. A bottom turbulence patch with duration of about 2 hours was registered over the slope of the Gotland Deep. The rate of turbulent energy dissipation is about ]105cm2/s3. In the area of Hamrarne and Słupsk Sill, horizontal scales of turbulent patches are between O(10m) and 0(100 m). All obtained data testify the high level of turbulent intermittency, so probability of detecting turbulent patches is high.

Opis:
“Zapiski Historyczne” is one of the most important historical journals in Poland, and its distinguishing feature is the focus on the history of the Baltic Region, as well as an insight into the achievements of international historiography with respect to this area. The internationalisation of the journal through the publication of articles by foreign authors is associated with the period when Marian Biskup (1922–2012) was the journal’s editor-in-chief (1958 to 2003). The first articles by foreign authors were published in 1962–1963, and in 1968 “Zapiski Historyczne” became officially a journal of international acclaim. This phenomenon has been present in the existing literature on the subject, notably in articles published in connection with successive anniversaries of the journal. On the one hand, the article presents a compilation of articles by foreign authors during M. Biskup’s tenure in the journal, complete with the analysis of these articles in each period, and on the other hand, based on the scientific enquiries in archival materials (written by M. Biskup, the files of Toruń Society of Arts and Sciences), an attempt was made to capture the main aspects of the internationalisation of the journal: the extent to which it was a conscious and consistently implemented concept, the mechanisms of obtaining texts (based on M. Biskup’s international contacts), as well as editorial, organizational and communication problems that were encountered in the translation and processing of texts by foreign authors.

Financial literacy as a prerequisite of citizens’ financial well-being and, as a consequence, economic security is a hot topic not only in the academic envi-ronment, but also among the representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations. One of the most important activities realized by the government in order to enhance citizens’ financial literacy level is the implementation of the National strategy. The first step of this process is an evaluation of a current situation, which, in turn, requires a proper measurement instrument. The current research was aimed at specifying the content and the structure of the instrument, as well as to reveal the differences in perception of financial matters by students from different countries. A set of 12 financial questions was developed to detect perceived importance and complexity of financial literacy components, as well as to get financial literacy self-assessment scores. The questions were disseminated among the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian students. The obtained results assisted to specify the content and wording of questions to be included into the financial literacy measurement instrument. Besides, revealed differences between students’ perception of financial questions allowed making conclusions about students’ self-confidence that has a great impact on financial literacy level.

The Baltic winter navigation depended always very much on the ice conditions in the sea. The sea ice occurs different in form and amount, depending on the sea area and the winter season. As the maritime traffic on the Baltic Sea constitutes a substantial amount in the whole of the Baltic countries transport, Sea Ice Services (SISs) have come into being. They constituted the Baltic Sea Ice Meeting (BSIM) – a body, which assembles the parties, which are interested in warnings against bad ice conditions, and in protection of navigation in ice in the Baltic Sea. An indispensable co-operator to this body was always the company “Baltic Icebreakers”. To-day within the BSIM operate by the SISs of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany, Netherlands, Norway and the Baltic Icebreakers. The main statutory duties of the SISs is the acquisition, processing and dissemination of actual information on sea ice conditions and on obstructions to navigation due to sea ice. This is done by maintaining observing posts along the coast of those countries, in their ports and approaches to them, by gathering information from ships, from ice beakers, if possible – from reconnaissance flights or satellite images. Routine products of SISs are the ice reports, ice bulletins, ice charts, forecasts and warnings and other information broadcast by mass media, e.g. radio, internet, Navtex and on the national and Baltic SISs’ web sites etc.

Opis:
Using the results of the Rossby Centre Ocean model (RCO) the Baltic inflows in summer/autumn 2002 and January 2003 have been studied. The model results were extracted from a long simulation with observed atmospheric forcing starting in May 1980. In RCO a bottom boundary layer model was embedded. Both the smaller inflows and the major inflow in January 2003 are simulated in good agreement with observations. We found that a total of 222 km3 water entered the Baltic in January; the salinity of 94 km3 was greater than 17 PSU. In August/September 2002 the outflow through the Sound and inflow across the Darss Sill were simulated. The net inflow volume amounted to about 50 km3.

Opis:
Hydrographic and current measurements are analysed for stagnant deep-water conditions over the south-eastern topographic flank of the Eastern Gotland Basin (EGB) in April 2000. Results suggest a prevailing barotropic motion mode on a synoptic scale of several days. Deep along-slope volume transports derived from subsurface current meter moorings are compared with those of the baroclinic fraction of geostrophic motions crossing the plane of a hydrographic section. This was aligned perpendicular to deep isobaths and was repeated 40 times with a time step of six hours. Changes in regional winds produced a quasi-ten day cycle in the filling level of the Baltic Proper. Associated wave-like fluctuations of the mass field propagated cyclonically with a velocity of about 0.04 m s−1 around the deep basin’s rim. It is concluded that associated changes in deep volume transports result mainly from barotropically governed advection processes and that those of the baroclinic component of geostrophic currents provide a qualitatively and quantitatively quite inaccurate description of related transport fluctuations on a daily scale.

Background. Macoma balthica is the major zoobenthic species in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Material. Two (4.2%) of the 48 M. balthica specimens collected in 2002 from the depth of 40 m were found to harbour metacercariae−containing sporocysts of Parvatrema affinis (Jameson et Nicoll, 1913) James, 1964. Results. The paper reports morphoanatomical dimensions of 30 sporocysts and metacercariae. Due to the common occurrence of the intermediate (Macoma balthica) and definitive (anseriform and charadriiform birds) hosts of P. affinis in the Gulf of Gdańsk, the trematodes are regarded as a constant component of the local biocoenose.

Opis:
This paper presents results of the investigation carried out in frame of research project of Institute of Meteorology and Water Management Maritime Branch in Gdynia (IWM-MB) in the y ear 2000. The goal of the project was to determine the conformity of the sea current forecasts for the layer 8 - I 2 meters of the open sea part of the Southern Baltic Sea, as produced by the hydrodynamic model of the Baltic Sea- HIROMB [5}, with the measurements. Contrary to the results of previous experiments as in the case of the POLRODEX ones [7, 8, 9}, during present study it was expected to detect behaviour of the model far from the influence of the boundary like coastline as well as bottom friction in the shallow water areas. The analysed data were collected during five routine cruises of r/v Baltica organized by IWMMBsince February until September I999 [10], when cruise track started/rom the Gdansk Deep, next along the northern border of the Polish EEZ, ending in the Bomholm Deep area usually. On the basis of the current vectors recorded by means of the ship mounted ADCP as the 250 m average values in the layer 7.5 to 12.5 meters, mean values related to the model grid have been calculated and statistically assessed. These mean vectors have been used for compan·son of forecasted values. Consequently, the sets of values of the differences between measured and predicted currents were statistically evaluated both regarding the direction and the module of the currents as well as the current vector components (Vx, Vy) separately.

Opis:
Successful preliminary archival research in Russian Naval National Archives in St. Petersburg (RGAVMF) was conducted by the author in 201. It concerned the period between the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, was a result of making archive materials available, however, only up to 1917. Based on the available sources, one can state that the general situation concerning navigational security of shipping in the regions of the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia in the times of Russian Empire, up to 1918, was complicated because Finnish land, between 1809–1917, formed Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous part of the Russian Empire. Due to this situation, the safety navigational regulations in the region were based on Russian law. Lightships and lighthouses of the described regions had Russian names. It was not until Finland was separated from Russia when the original, Finnish, names of navigational signs, written in Latin alphabet were introduced. The lightships shown in the monograph have both Russian and Finnish names written in Cyrillic alphabet. Some of the vessels are also present among Finnish lighthouses but have different names. A similar situation occurs when describing Estonian and Latvian lightships, which belonged to those countries between 1920–1939 but, apart from that period, belonged to Russian and Soviet governments.

The objective of this paper is to present an automatic monitoring system for the 3D CEMBS model in the operational version. This predictive, eco hydrodynamic model is used as a tool to control the conditions and bio productivity of the Baltic sea environment and to forecast physical and ecological changes in the studied basin. Satellite-measured data assimilation is used to constrain the model and achieve higher accuracy of its results. 3D CEMBS is a version of the Community Earth System Model, adapted for the Baltic Sea. It consists of coupled ocean and ice models, working in active mode together with the ecosystem module. Atmospheric forecast from the UM model (Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling of the Warsaw University) are used as a forcing fields feed through atmospheric data model. In addition, river inflow of freshwater and nutrient deposition from 71 main rivers is processed by land model. At present, satellite data from AQUA MODIS, processed by the SatBałtyk project Operational System are used for the assimilation of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll a concentration. In the operational mode, 48-hour forecasts are produced at six-hour intervals, providing a wide range of hydrodynamic and biochemical parameters.

Opis:
Based on structural maps, the bedrock structure on the southern slope of the Baltic Shield is analysed. Gently southerly dipping (0.1–0.2°) Paleozoic layers from Estonia to the Swedish east coast form the Baltic Homocline (BH). Numerous monoclinal folds, forced by basement faulting, induce slight variations in bedrock attitude across the BH. Studies on faults exposed in Southern Finland suggest that many monoclinal folds inducing basement faults within the BH are of Precambrian origin and have been active in pulses. The present monoclines were shaped by the Caledonian Orogeny. Submeridional tectonic hinge-lines induce minor regional-scale changes in the structural setting and control trends/styles of the forced folds. From the west, the BH bounds with the Baltic–Bothnian mobile zone that has been intermittently active since Mesoproterozoic times. The evolving Baltic Syneclise in the Silurian rearranged the structural setting typical for the Ordovician Baltic Basin. The Cenozoic uplift of Scandinavia created a SE-to-E-dipping bedrock sequence around the Gotland–Öland area. As the latter area had a different attitude than the BH, two Cenozoic cuesta-sets started to evolve around the northern Baltic Proper. They both had an outlet to the N–S-flowing Eridanos River around the Gotska Sandön area, creating thus two independent sections of the Baltic Klint.

The unusual sequence of inflow events into the Baltic Sea that occurred in 2002 and 2003 includes the first ever important baroclinic inflow to be described (August 2002), the Major Baltic Inflow (January 2003), which gave rise to the highest oxygen levels in the Gotland Deep since the 1930s, and the baroclinic inflow (August 2003) that elevated the Gotland Basin deep water salinity to values last observed in 1977, and caused the surface salinity to rise again. From these trend changes, salt residence times were estimated at about 20 years in the deep waters and 30 years above the pycnocline. Ventilation of the remote Karlsö Deep took until 2005, two years after the inflow event responsible, at a time when the Bornholm and Eastern Gotland Basins were already returning to stagnation.

Baltic States
Opis:
The history of the nations living in today’s Baltic States is marked by fighting against stronger neighbours: Russia, Poland, Sweden, Denmark and the German settlers in their territories. Unlike Lithuanians, Estonians and Latvians failed to create their own statehood before the 20 th century. The Lithuanians created their own state, a powerful one, which then became a part of an even wider state organism – the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. As a result, the security policy of Lithuania was identical to that of the First Republic of Poland. Although there were tribes living within the area of current Estonia and Latvia for many centuries up to the outbreak of World War I, the lands of Latvia and Estonia had been changing owners and had been under the rule of almost all neighbouring countries. As a result of the positive outcome of the First World War, but also thanks to their efforts, the Baltic States regained independence in order to lose it after only 20 years, as a consequence of another war. After restoring independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Baltic States realised that even acting together they were unable to defend themselves against a potential aggressor. As a result, they decided to follow in the footsteps of other countries of the former Eastern Bloc (e.g. Poland and Slovakia) and to integrate with Western European structures such as NATO and the EU. Following NATO inclusion, the security strategies of the Baltic States have been revised in line with the changes in their surrounding geopolitical environment.

Opis:
The use of hydracoustical techniques to classify benthic fauna and flora is one of the important challenges in present marine research. It is crucial to understand the microphytobenthos photosynthesis impact on the backscattering properties of the sea floor in the Baltic Sea, where the techniques are actively developed now. This motivated our study. The data used in the analysis was collected in the multiday laboratory experiment conducted in the frame of the grant of the National Science Centre, Poland (No. N306 773940). In this experiment, during changing light conditions (light/dark photocycles), the hydroacoustical backscattering data was acquired in the aquarium with a sandy bottom. The constant temperature and salinity conditions, typical for the Southern Baltic, were kept, and oxygen content was monitored. In this paper data collected at 280 kHz, was processed. It was studied how the energy of echo and power spectral density of the echo signal, are sensitive to the microphytobenthos photosynthesis.

Opis:
Quartz cementation is a major parameter controlling the reservoir properties of the Middle Cambrian quartz arenites of the central and western parts of the Baltic Basin. Marked local variations in the porosity and permeability severely complicate oil exploration and exploitation inWest Lithuania. Commonly, the porosity of the oil reservoirs is 6–8%. Therefore even minor changes in the porosity have a considerable impact on the potential of oil fields. A predictive model of the quartz cementation is proposed, based on kinetic modelling results. The precipitation rate-limiting model effectively explains sharp variations in quartz cementation controlled by grain-size changes. The model was further improved by incorporating the sorting factor. Even so, the amount of quartz cementation is overpredicted by 4–7% in some intervals, implying that the precipitation rate-limiting model is too simplified. A good correlation was obtained between stylolite spacing and quartz cementation, the overpredicted quartz amount increasing with an increase in stylolite spacing. The modelling results argue against any discernable impact of the oil on the reservoir quality of the sandstones. The successful prediction of reservoir quality mainly depends on correct reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the Middle Cambrian deposits. The evolutionary model of the quartz cementation suggests a good reservoir quality of the Cambrian sandstones during the later part of Late Palaeozoic, when most of oil was generated in the basin.

Atlas of the Baltic languages: from idea to pilot projectDialectologists from Latvian Language Institute of the University of Latvia and the Department of Language History and Dialectology of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, have developed a proposal for a joint project entitled, The Atlas of the Baltic Languages, which is intended to demonstrate the close kinship of these two Baltic languages. A pilot project, supported by a grant from the University of Latvia and Directorate for the Millenium of Lithuania has been carried out between 2006 and 2008 to determine what the form and eventual content of such an atlas might be.In 2009 a summary of work carried out on the pilot project on Atlas of the Baltic Languages, Prospect has been published which includes 12 geolinguistic maps, with commentary in Latvian, Lithuanian and English. The publication also contains in the introduction homage paid to the living and extinct Baltic languages, as well as an overview of the history of the study of dialects in both countries and the characteristics and regional distribution of the dialects of Latvian and Lithuanian. The publication also describes the principles followed in creating these geolinguistic maps and associated commentary. This article describes recent progress made in research on the regional distribution of dialects of both Baltic languages. For more than a century research on the dialects of the Latvian and Lithuanian languages has taken place in parallel, separately gathering data on the various dialects of each respective language. It is, therefore, necessary first to examine, briefly, the histories of the respective geolinguistic research endeavours. The first records of differences between the territorial extents and diversity of Latvian and Lithuanian are to be found in surviving grammars and dictionaries of these languages compiled in the 17th century. The first map showing the geographical reach of the Lithuanian language is to be found in the grammar compiled in 1876 by Friedrich Kurschat. The first geolinguistic map of the Latvian language was published in 1892 by August Bielenstein. The systematic efforts at gathering Latvian and Lithuanian non-material cultural assets date from the second half of the 19th century. A new chapter in the study of Lithuanian and Latvian dialects began in the 1950s after a decision was taken to produce atlases of the two languages. At the end of the 20th century the atlases of the Lithuanian and Latvian language were published. This was the main basis for joint project – The Atlas of the Baltic LanguagesThe maps created in the framework of the pilot project, The Atlas of the Baltic Languages, show the principal grouping of most terms used by the speakers of these two living Baltic languages. An in-depth geolinguistic study of the Latvian and Lithuanian languages could produce important findings in the field of the history of the Baltic peoples.

The paper discusses the scattering of radiation by a Baltic crude oil –sea water emulsion. The scattering spectrum calculated using the Mie solution in the spectral range from 380 nm to 730 nm is compared with the measured spectrum of light scattered through a right angle. Spectra in the wavelength range from 210 nm to 730 nm were measured using a spectrofluorimeter for fresh and stored samples of the Baltic crude oil emulsion. Scattering increases with wavelength in the UV range and then decreases slightly with the wavelength of visible light. The result of the calculation is similar to the measured spectra. Both the calculated and measured spectra display numerous relative extremes throughout the spectral area. Light scattering in the emulsion decreases during storage as the oil concentration in the medium diminishes. The results also demonstrate that the single scattering model describes the phenomenon correctly.

Opis:
This article analyses the Polish maritime programme after the Second World War, as expressed in scholarship of two main Polish research institutions: the Baltic Institute and the Western Institute. Given the considerable border changes at the end of the war, which incorporated a long coastline and three major ports on the Baltic Sea (Danzig/Gdańsk, Stettin/Szczecin and Gdynia) into post-war Poland, the maritime programmes gained a new basis for operations in comparison to the interwar period, and thus had to be adapted accordingly. They contained both continuities and modifications: in ideological terms they were based on the prewar premises of Poland’s origins as a Baltic Sea country, and had a strong anti-German dimension. On the other hand, they were more pragmatic and concentrated on the organization of the maritime economy and education. Similarly as in the interwar period, they were also seen as a modernizing project: the maritime economy and education were supposed to connect the Polish nation with the whole world, and thus assure its equal status as part of the Western world.

In summer 2017 numerous dead round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus) and individuals covered with white coating were observed in the Puck Bay. The aim of our research was to determine the microbiological composition of the round goby from the Puck Bay, focusing on the presence of pathogens. Bacteria were identified by biochemical methods and, by sequencing of 16S rRNA. The dominant bacterial species were Shewanella baltica, Pseudomonas spp. and Aeromonas spp. - opportunistic pathogens, commonly present in many fish species, which may become harmful for the organism in unfavorable conditions. It was the first trial to determine the composition of the bacterial flora of N. melanostomus from that area.

This publication aims at presenting the significance of the regionalization or rather integration process taking place in post-communist Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) in the light of globalisation, with particular attention on political and economic aspects. This article also aims at presenting this problem in a very concise way, both substantially and quantitatively. The Europe of the XXI century is an integrating Europe, and by means of regional integration it moves towards a higher range of integration – globalisation. Thus, each European country, including post-communist Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) while adapting to quality changes of contemporariness, realizes both the regionalization or integration processes, as well as globalisation one.

Opis:
The coastal area and archipelago of the Gulf of Finland mostly comprises bedrock terrain with a generally thin soil cover and represents a distinct hydrogeological regime. The bulk of the bedrock area consists of relatively unbroken blocks with small, hydraulically uniform systems. The direct groundwater flow from the blocks to the sea is restricted to the blocks bordering the sea. The blocks are crossed by faults and fractures, which locally form long broken zones inside the rock mass. A single fault can catch water from several blocks and also from the soil cover. Most groundwater in the coastal strip flows to the sea through the bedrock fault zones, which are thought to represent the most favourable flow conditions. The dimensions of hydraulically uniform horizons, hydraulic conductivities and hydraulic gradients of the fault zones are poorly known. The estimated groundwater flow distance from the land to the sea in the faults reaches 8–10 km, thought the average distance may only be around 2 km. In the block areas the flow distance is even shorter, down to about one kilometre. On the whole, the amount of groundwater discharging directly to the sea from this regime (excluding overlying sand and gravel deposits), which has a surface area of around 2100 km2, is approximately 4 m3 s–1. This is a third of the total direct discharge to the sea in the coastal areas of Finland.

Opis:
The Polish part of the Baltic region is located within the contact zone between two large geological units: the Precambrian platform and the Paleozoic platform. It comprises the Polish sector of the southern Baltic Sea and the adjacent onshore part of Northern Poland (Western and Eastern Pomerania). The fundamental geological pattern is defined by the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, separating the East European Craton from the Paleozoic platform. As a result of exploration activity in the onshore Pomerania region, four oil fields in Cambrian sandstones, seven gas fields in Carboniferous sandstones, six gas fields in Rotliegend sandstones, and eleven oil fields within the Zechstein Main Dolomite horizon have been discovered. The petroleum play of the southern Baltic Sea region and adjacent areas must be considered separately for Eastern and Western Pomerania. In the Peribaltic Syneclise we can only take into consideration organic matter appearing in lower Paleozoic rocks but their geothermal history refers to the period from the Vendian up to the recent. The present extent of the "oil window" in the Upper Cambrian rocks is mainly restricted to the offshore area. Reservoir properties of the "gas window" Cambrian rocks are rather low due to intensive diagenetic processes. Acquisition of gas should be possible by processes of hydraulic stimulation (tight gas). Lower Paleozoic rocks rich in organic matter (Ordovician and Silurian), especially in the border zone of the EEC (Ro >>gt; 1.3%), could be an area of unconventional gas fields (shale gas). The Western Pomerania petroleum play shows two separate source rocks units. The older one embraces Carboniferous deposits with organic matter of terrestrial origin and generated gases accumulated in the Rotliegend and Carboniferous traps. The second petroleum system is located within the carbonates of the Zechstein Main Dolomite (Ca2). This is a closed system, meaning that the source rocks are at the same time the reservoirs sealed by Zechstein evaporates. Hitherto discovered hydrocarbon deposits in the Polish part of the Baltic region have confirmed good perspectives regarding oil and gas hydrocarbon zones. New, conventional and unconventional discoveries remain possible.

Recently developed system for assessment of radiation budget for the Baltic Sea has been presented and verified. The system utilizes data from various sources: satellite, model and in situ measurements. It has been developed within the SatBałtyk project (Satellite Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Environment - www.satbaltyk.eu) where the energy radiation budget is one of the key element. The SatBałtyk system generates daily maps of the all components of radiation budget on every day basis. We show the scheme of making daily maps, applied algorithms and empirical data collection within the system. An empirical verification of the system has been carried out based on empirical data collected on the oil rig placed on the Baltic Sea. This verification concerned all the components of the surface radiation budget. The average daily NET products are estimated with statistical error ca. 13 Wm-2. The biggest absolute statistical error is for LWd component and equals 14 Wm-2. The relative error in relation to the average annual values for whole Baltic is the biggest for SWu and reaches 25%. All estimated components have correlation coefficient above 0.91.
