Opis:
Diatoms Bacillariophyceae are a specialized, systematic group of algae, living in different types of ecosystems, and they are very good indicators of water quality. Recently, detailed studies have been carried out in the territory of the Podkarpacie Province on the diversity of diatoms in running waters. The area of study covers mostly the catchment of the biggest rivers of the province (mainly the Wisłok River) and cultivated soils. Running waters in the Podkarpacie Province are characterized by a huge species richness of diatoms, 738 different taxa have been found so far. The highest number of taxa was noted in the Wisłok River (400), while the Żołynianka and Różanka streams and the Mleczka were also characterized by huge diversity (from 200 to over 350 taxa). In the majority of studied sites diatoms of alkaline (pH>7) and nutrient rich (eutrophic) waters dominated: Navicula lanceolata, N. gregaria, N. capitatoradiata, Nitzschia palea, N. dissipata ssp. dissipata, Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, A. pyrenaicum, Amphora pediculus, Diatoma vulgaris, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Planothidium lanceolatum, Cocconeis pediculus and C. placentula var. lineata. About 150 taxa were indentified on cultivated soils, among which the largest populations were formed by Hantzschia amphioxys, Mayamaea atomus, Nitzschia palea, N. pusilla, Pinnularia obscura and Stauroneis thermicola.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a floristic study focusing on taxa representing the genus Gomphonema in Kobylanka stream, situated ca 30 km NW of Kraków. Species belonging to the genus Gomphonema Ehr. were very frequently observed diatom taxa in the material studied. Amongst 272 diatom taxa recorded in the studied material, 13 belong to this genus. Some of them are widespread and often found in Poland; others such as Gomphonema micropus Kutz. and G. sarcophagus Greg. are rarely or for the first time reported from the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. G. brebissonii Reichardt, G. lagerheimii A. Cl. and G. parallelistriatum Lange-Bert. and Reichardt are new to the Polish flora. Identification of the diatom flora was based on light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphological characters and dimensions of frustules were measured for all taxa reported. Ecological requirements, remarks on distribution, and photographic documentation are also given.

The studies on bentic diatoms were conducted in 2009–2011 at eight samplings sites over the Żołynianka stream and its tributary, the Jagielnia. 427 diatom taxa were recorded in total. Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, Aulacoseira ambigua, Fragilaria capucina var. capucina, Gomphonema parvlum, Navicula gregaria, Nitzschia palea and Planothidium lanceolatum were dominant taxa in both watercourses. Chemical analysis of water showed high chemical status of water at most of sampling sites. The results of diatomaceous analysis conducted with OMNIDIA software revealed moderate and poor condition of water. The best water quality was recorded in the Jagielnia stream (good or moderate status). The values of the analyzed indices showed the worst water quality on the Żołynianka at site four, showing bad ecological status. TDI index deviated the most from the other two indices (IPS and GDI), always indicating poorer water quality.

Detailed phycological analysis aimed at the assessment of water quality in the Sołacki Park ponds in Poznań was performed during the vegetative season of 2012. Qualitative analysis revealed the presence of a total of 294 phytoplankton taxa (244 in the Mały Pond and 246 in the Duży Pond), most of which were green algae (total 32%) and diatoms (33%). However, quantitative evaluation showed that in the summer both ponds were dominated by green algae and in the fall by fi lamentous cyanobacteria. The highest phytoplankton abundance occurred in the fall (13 291 ind./ml in the Mały Pond and 20 288 ind./ml in the Duży Pond), when the proportion of blue-green algae was the greatest. The dominant species were: Ulnaria acus, Crucigenia tetrapedia, Tetraedron minimum, Planktothrix agardhii and Pseudanabaena limnetica. Signifi cant share of green algae of the order Chlorococcales, cyanobacteria and diatoms, indicator algae for eutrophy and meso- or polysaproby, suggested high fertility and signifi cant pollution of the investigated ponds. This study confi rms the need for continuous monitoring of the Sołackie Ponds, as well as periodic reclamation treatments in order to reduce eutrophication and improve water quality.

Opis:
The Baryczka stream is a small (about 20 km long), left bank tributary of the River San (Podkarpackie Voivodeship). Studies on diversity of diatom communities using OMNIDIA software were conducted in 2010 and 2011. Diatomaceous indices IPS, GDI and TDI and Van Dam et al. classification system were used for water quality assessment. Planothidium lanceolatum, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata, Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, Nitzschia linearis, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Navicula lanceolata and Naicula gregaria were the most numerous. Values of the IPS index indicate good water quality (II–III class). Based on the GDI index, waters of the Baryczka stream were classified to III class water quality. The TDI index indicated poor and bad ecological state on the most sampling sites. On all sampling sites alaliphilous (pH>7) diatoms taxa predominated. The most common were eutraphentic and hypereutraphentic diatoms. With respect to trophy, it was shown that α- and β-mesosaprobous diatoms were the most common (III and II class water quality).

Opis:
Research on soil diatoms has been conducted in Podkarpacie voivodeship in Dąbrowa village ( 50°03'31 N 21°48'35 E) in the Subcarpathian Province in SE Poland. On the same soil type, i.e. silty clay loam (sand 0-23%, silt >40, clay 36-50%), two tillage systems were applied under maize (Zea mays): traditional and reduced. The major aim of the research was to analyse diatom diversity depending on the applied tillage system under maize (Zea mays). In the soil samples it was identified 62 taxa of diatoms, including 38 under traditional tillage, and 50 under reduced tillage. Under traditional tillage the most frequent species were Stauroneis thermicola, Mayamaea cf. atomus var. permitis, Nitzschia palea, and Pinnularia obscura. Under reduced tillage, Amphora montana was the most abundant. The dominant diatoms are characteristic of water reservoirs but are regulary found also on wet or moist sites.

Opis:
This paper describes the first study of algae assemblages in 20 caves in the Krakowsko-Częstochowska Upland (Southern Poland), in the period between 2005-2006. The investigations showed mostly on epilithic algae and their subaeric habitats (rock faces within caves and walls at cave entrances). The morphological and cytological variability of algae were studied in fresh samples, in cultures grown on agar plates and in SPURR preparations. A total of 43 algae species was identified, mostly epilithic species and tolerant of low light intensities. The largest group was formed by representatives of the division Chlorophyta (24 species), and then the division Chrysophyta (Heterokontophyta) - 17 species, with 9 species belonging to the class Bacillariophyceae, 7 species - Xanthophyceae and 1 species representing the class Eustigmatophyceae. Dinophyta (2 species) constituted the last and the smallest group. Among the collected algae, the following species deserve special attention: Thelesphaera alpina, Bracteacoccus minor, Trachychloron simplex, Tetracystis intermedia and T. cf. isobilateralis. The last species was not earlier found in Europe. Identification of species was greatly aided by examination of cell ultrastructure, which provided an array of further features, increasing chances of correct species identification. Furthermore, the studies focused that algae, although usually remaining under dominance of cyanobacteria, excellently differentiate this special area and even enrich it.
